In the simplest sense, archiving a file means making a copy that you never change and never discard. You already know how to do that.
iPhoto has built-in archival features, in the sense that it saves all versions of an image that you've modified. As long as you have adequate backups, you don't necessarily have any reason to archive an iPhoto library. If you want to delete images from the working library but still have access to them in case you change your mind, then you do need to archive those images. I don't have a specific suggestion as to how you should do that. You might post a question in the iPhoto forum.

  • ASM Disk got full

    Hi,
I have a standalone database 10.2.0.1 on windows. The datafiles and the archive files are on ASM. The disk on which archive is has got full due to which i am not able to open the database (it is in mount state). Also my asmcmd is not running.
EM is showing "Archiver is unable to archive a redo log because the output device is full or unavailable".
when I'm giving command asmcmd from bin directory of database after setting the ASM SID it throws following message "asmcmd: the environment variable ORACLE_HOME is not set.".
Can anybody give me some idea what to do??
    Thanks and regards

Clear the archive log. Surely if you're running in archive log mode, you have a backup process (like rman) that backs up the archive logs and then remove them from the archive destination to make space for new archive logs?

  • How to map ASM disk path to physical disk on AIX?

    Hi Everyone,
I am working on a plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager 10gR2 on AIX 5.3 which provides monitoring of storage arrays and supports ASM databases in addition to the 'emrep' database. One of the metric of that plug-in is populated by the result from a korn shell script. The script directly runs on the AIX host (connected to the storage array by FC cables via HBA ports) and retrieves the mapping for -- Physical disk - Logical Disk - LUN - ASM Disk.
Now, I was able to get the mapping for Physical Disk – Logical Disk – LUN, but could not map ASM Disk. I googled a lot for any clue but did not find the answer to this specific problem.
Now, I have the list of physical disks used for ASM by the command—
    lspv
    hdisk0 0001c22ac8d664ca rootvg active
    hdisk1 0001c22aa51f496a Oracle active
    hdisk2 0001c22ac478263a scratch active
    hdisk3 0001c22ac472549a Oracle active
    hdisk4 0001c22ac4725d6a Oracle active
    hdisk5 none None
    hdisk6 none None
    hdisk7 none None
    hdisk8 none None
    hdisk9 none None
    hdisk10 none None
    hdisk11 none None
    hdisk12 none None
    hdisk13 none None
    hdisk14 none None
    hdisk15 none None
    hdisk16 none None
The disks hdisk5-16 are ASM disks and there are no PVID’s present.
I also have the list of ASM disks by the command—
    ls –l /dev | grep oracle
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 6 May 12 00:02 asm_rd10_1a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 10 Apr 21 07:27 asm_rd10_1b
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 7 May 09 13:53 asm_rd10_1c
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 8 May 09 13:53 asm_rd5_1a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 4 May 12 00:02 asm_rd5_1b
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 9 Apr 21 07:28 asm_rd5_1c
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 12 May 12 00:02 asm_xbb2_rd10_1a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 11 Apr 24 07:34 asm_xbb2_rd10_1b
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 13 May 09 13:53 asm_xbb2_rd10_1c
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 16 May 12 00:02 asm_xbb2_rd5_1a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 14 Apr 24 07:34 asm_xbb2_rd5_1b
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 22, 15 May 09 13:54 asm_xbb2_rd5_1c
Now I am looking for a way to map these two lists with each other, and had no luck so far.
Does oracle provide this information somewhere in the OEM installation structure or is there a command in AIX which could give some way to map the ASM disks to the physical disks?
Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance…
FYI: ASMLib driver is not present on the system.

The view you are talking about here gives the ASM DISK NAME (like DGRXBB_0001) and ASM DISK PATH (like /dev/asm_rd_10_1a) and I am already using it, but this is not what I asked in mt original post. If you read carefully, I want to establish a mapping between the ASM DISK PATH (like /dev/asm_rd_10_1a) and the AIX Physical disk (like /dev/hdisk5) and did not find any view giving this info. If you know of some views which could help establish this mapping or some AIX commands or files that could help do this using shell script, it is most welcome

  • Cleaning up ASM disk group after failed rman duplicate session?

I am using rman duplicate to create a clone of a production database. The rman duplicate failed in phase 1 (retoration of datafiles) and my datafile are being restored to an ASM diskgroup.
I read in the metalink note Manual Completion of a Failed RMAN Duplicate [ID 360962.1] the following...
Note : From 10g onwards, if duplicate failed during step 1, which is the restore of datafiles, it is probably best to restart the duplicate process. Any files that have already been restored will be skipped and the duplicate process can continue without manual intervention
So I followed the advice in the note and started the rman duplcate script over again from the beggining. I am hoping it will have the intelligence to skip any files that have already been restored but if it is not since this is 10.1.0.3 and I cannot use the asmcmd command to connect to the ASM instance to delete any files that have been created then how can I delete and of the files since the database instance never got created correctly and cannot open?
Any thought on how I can now cleanup the files in the ASM disk group? Also, has anyone started an rman duplicate again after it has previously failed and did it actually skip the files that are already there as stated in the metalink note?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately the v$asm_file does not have the entire file name or path it just gives you the follwing...
    SQL> desc v$asm_file

This really stinks I wish I didn't have to work with 10gr1 at all but the database I am trying to move to a ew server and new storage is running this version and we did not want to upgrade the existing database first before attempting the migration because it is reliant upon tape backups which I do not have alot of confidence in...

  • ASM Disk Mount Error

    1. I created the ASM disks successfully and created the appropriate ASM DiskGroups using asmca utility.

Thanks Berx for pointing that out.
I deleted the ASM disks and the diskgroups and re-created a fresh and was able to start the ASM instance and mount the DGs.
Now the mount is persistent, but the dbca fails with the following error in the alert log. Under what situations can this error be seen ?

  • Can't have ASM mark a NFS file as an ASM disk : -is not a block device

    Hello,
I’m trying to experiment with ASM for learning purpose. Because I don’t have access to a SAN, I am trying to use NFS files but I can’t manage to have ASM mark those files as ASM disks.
    [root@localhost /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASM_DISK_1 /mnt/asm_dsks/dg1/disk1
Marking disk "ASM_DISK_1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
The oracleasm log says: File "/mnt/asm_dsks/dg1/disk1" is not a block device
    OK, more context now:
I am trying to install ASM on a RHEL5 virtual machine (on vmware).
    [root@localhost /]# uname -rm
    2.6.18-8.el5 x86_64
    I followed this document:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/smiley-11gr1-install.html until I got stuck at the following command:
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ...
Now, the NFS filesystem comes from a Solaris 10 system (the only one that's available) running on a physical sun box (this one is not a virtual system).
I have tried many combinations. I tried creating the files on the linux VM, using dd. As root, as oracle. I tried creating them on the Solaris side, using mkfile... no matter what I try, I always get the same issue.
I tried to follow this document: Creating Files on a NAS Device for Use with ASM (http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10811_05/app_nas.htm#BCFHCIEC)
    But nothing seems to work.
    Any idea, recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Laurent.

    Hi buddy,
I guess the metalink note 731775.1 should help You.
    In fact the procedure is:
    - Create the disk devices on your NFS directory (using dd)
    - Adjuste the permissions over those files (in this case, oracle:dba)
    - Adjust the ASM_DISKSTRING at the ASM instance and setting the NFS directory in the discovery path
    - Verify if they are available at v$asm_disk view
    - Create the diskgroup using the the NFS disks that You have created.
    Hope it helps,
    Cerreia
