1 hour clip in time-line goes gradually out of sync

Hello,
I captured a one hour mini-DV tape to a G4 Powerbook as one clip in FCP 4.5. As it plays in the timeline, it gradually goes out of sync and eventually goes way out of sync. Why would this happen? The tape itself plays fine in the camera and as it was captured it appeared to be in in sync all the way through. Thanks.
Jonathan

Mini dv does not lock the audio to the picture, so over a period of time you'll get sync drift. Check to see that your sequence settings for audio match the camera's. FCP defaults at 48k. if you shot at 32k (12 bit), than on a long capture your audio will drift out of sync. You can create a sequence that is 32k, that might help but it looks like you'll have to move the audio track possibly in sections to get it back into sync.

  • Automatically stop at end of clip on time line

    Dear All,
im using fcp ( final cut pro) as playback server. I creat run down on time line, The problem i m facing, it continues playing after the desired clip finished. I want it to be stopped on the last frame of the played clip. ( do not play next one)

You won't find an option that plays only a selected portion in the timeline without using the in/out - play in to out option. That's the way it was designed. The only other way to make sure you can do it is to make separate timelines for each clip.

  • Why CS4 freezes when drag clips to time line ?

Hi, I am using CS4 whenI grab and drop all the clips at onece on the time line most of the clips at the end freezes. The clips in the start of the time line plays ok on time line and but when it reaches blank clips, CS4 seems freezes and I have to select CTRL+ALT+DEL to getout which will distroy all data on time line. I am using Dell Precision T7500, 2.4GHz Proc, 12GB DDR3 RAM with ECC, Nvidia Qudro FX 3800 with 1Gb memory, RAID 5 sys with 3 600GB, SAS HDDs(but shows as only one big HDD, ie. 1.09 TB total in C:\ and my data and project/scratch disk data saved in USB connected external HDD. All my OS and Prgrams saved in C:\ drive. I would really appreciate for any advice I can try to get rid of long lasted problem...Ur help is much appreciated. Thx.

You have made a giant mistake in setting up your disks like that. Your currently have:
    1. A gigantic 1.09 TB raid5 for OS & program, which is very fast (around 170 MB/s transfer rate) of which you use about 40 GB.
    2. A very slow USB drive that is only suitable for backups (around 20 MB/s transfer rate).
    What you should do is:
    1. Get a new Samsung F4 320 GB disk for OS & proagrams ( around € 30) or better. The F4 gives the best bang-for-the-buck.
    2. Use the raid5 for all your other requirements, projects, media, media cache, etc.
    3. Use the USB disk for backups and possibly for exports,
    You will likely get transfer rates around 120 MB/s for 1, 170 MB/s for 2 and 20 MB/s for 3.
This € 30 investment will increase your performance significantly.
To paraphrase Armstrong: "A small step for man, a giant step for mankind", would tramslate into: "A small investment for you, a giant step in your performance".

  • Clips on Time Line Moving forward

I have video on V1 and photos on V2. When I delete V2 photos from the beginning of the time line all of the photos from the right of the time line move to the left. I cannot find a way to stop the other photos from moving. Also If I delete a clip from V1 there's no problem. All other clips stay in place. Only V2 moves.

Sounds like you performed a 'ripple' delete instead of a 'lift' delete.
If you have a full sized keyboard, the smaller DELETE key above the left arrow performs a 'ripple' delete, moving all clips further down the Timeline to the left to fill the gap.
The larger DELETE key above the \ key, performs a 'lift' delete. The selected clip will be deleted but leave a gap.

  • Problems with movie clips in time line-program keeps quiting

Not sure if I love this new iMovie version. I have imported many clips with my Sony Digital Hi 8. No problem with past versions. Everything went good until trying to put the clips into the time line. Everytime I try working with the time line and the imported movie clips the program quits...every time. Is this normal. Its getting pretty frusterating.
    Thanks for any help.
    Shane

I feel your pain in that the same things are happening to us. My wife is trying to edit many video clips imported from a Panasonic PV - GS39. iMovie crashes constantly when trying to work with this particular project. I have successfully edited a project that consisted of mainly still pics with only a few short video clips thrown in. I've tried many of the suggestions from this discussion group (QT plugs, trashing prefs, etc...) with no success. I'll keep trying for a solution though.

  • How do I move a compound clip from time line to an event in event library

How do I move a compound clip made in the time line into the event library to store it for latter use?

With *no other* clips selected, you can create a New Compound Clip (right click and select from popup) in the Event browser; Copy the compound clip in the storyline; double click new empty compound clip to open it in its own timeline and paste the copied compound clip. When you go back to the storyline, the compound clip in the Event browser is updated with the newly pasted compound clip item. If you want to uncompound the stored clips, when in the New compound's timeline, right click on the pasted compound and select Break Apart Clip Items...  The only problem you run into if you break items apart is if you have Effects applied to the storyline compound clip, you will lose those effects because the "new" compound in the Event browser will not have those effects and you can't copy/paste effects back into the Event browser, only items in a timeline.

  • NO Option/Drag to make a copy of a clip in time line

Sorry for what may be a very basic question but in several other programs that I use, pressing Option while dragging a selection will make a copy of the selection and place it where the mouse is released.  Does Premiere have something like this for dragging and copying a clip in the time line?
    Cris is Bliss

Alas, Premiere has no such drag-'n'-copy option. The closest you can get is using Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy your clip instance in the timeline, and then positioning the CTI where you want the copy to appear and pressing Ctrl/Cmd+V to paste. Be sure your tracks are targeted properly before pasting.
I, for one, would like to see this option in CS5... do what the cool kids do and make a feature request

I am setting up my new iphone4 and am trying to transfer all of the contacts etc from my old iphone 3GS.After linking it with itunes the screen has shown 'restore in progress' for almost 24 hours with time remaining going backwards. Is this normal? Should I let it continue?

No, that is not normal. I guess you are trying to restore from the latest backup created by your old 3GS?

  • Sound goes slowly out of sync

    Hello!
I am editing material from Nikon d7000 in Final Cut Pro Academic.
I converted the files in Mpeg Streamclip to Apple Pro Res 422. I recorded the sound separately as .wav file. When I put those files to the timeline I sync the sound and movie files and they look fine. They are in sync for the first minutes and then slowly goes out of sync.
Has anyone experienced this and knows why this happens?
    Karl

Unless your audio recorder is driven by a proper timecode clock, there is no way you are going to keep your recordings in sync.  You might get lucky a few times, but that's mostly luck.  Even weak batteries in the audio recorder can slow your audio.
This is only going to result in a tiny drift at worst, even over a long duration. If the recorders are both digital, you're more likely than not to "get lucky." Sample accurate? No. Frame accurate? probably, or at least close enough that nobody will notice. ****, there was no timecode clock on my 16mm camera, just a crystal to govern the motor speed. it never had a problem staying in dead-on sync with either a nagra or a DAT recorder, neither of which had timecode.
If someone is noticing drift, it's probably pretty bad, and it's most likely because of sample or frame rate mismatches.
My question is - How long is the clip, and how far out of sync is it? Karl, If you can give a ballpark number, it should be possible to guess at which kind of problem you have.
One that's bit us repeatedly is having the wrong Easy Setup selected when importing audio into FCP. If the Easy Setup is PAL, for example, but you're working on an NTSC project most things just work fine, but the audio import happens at the PAL frame rate and causes pretty severe drift over time.

  • Bloated clip on time line

In the picture above, I have imported  a series of clips shot on two Canon cameras. (1) XF305 and (2) XF105
Problem - clips in timeline for XF305 = 2hrs 45mins in Video track No1 but on Video track 3, the clips from XF105 = 12 hours +. The latter plays back in real time. The timelinefor Video 3 in my view should be approx 2hs 45 mins
Any suggestions how ro fix? I am seeking to undertake a multicamera edit.
    The clips shot in 35Mbps 1920 x 1080
    Thanks

I beleive there is repeated clips on Video track 3 ...seems to be the problem...

  • Clips on time line are not playing at right time.

I dragged my movie clips and photos onto my timeline, but when I play the movie back the clips and photos are not playing at the time they are placed on the timeline. What do I do? Thanks.

    Hi
TimeLine in iMovie - any version - doesn't behave as in other video editors as FCE/P or Premiere.
Here each new video-clip or photo snapps to the one to it's left. One can't fix them in Time else putting in "Dummy" clips in between.
If they still don't playback in a continous way - there can be several problems
    • free space on Start-up hard disk low - I never go under 25Gb free space
(free space on other second/external hard disks - doesn't matter)
    • iMovie pref file might have been corrupted - close iMovie, trash it and re-start iMovie
    • Use of strange video and photo and audio file format might also do this - iMovie HD6 wants
video - streamingDV as from miniDV tape Camera via FireWire
    photos - .jpg and .png
audio - .aiff 48kHz 16-bit (or from Audio-CD) - NO .mp3 or direct from iTunes

  • Jumpy Video over imported audio clips on time line.

I have faltering or jumpy video occurring only where I have imported music. this has never happened before. It happens on all music even aiff.
I need help, cant finish last DVD in a sequence of five.

    Hi Lowstone and welcome!
Are any of those audio files imported from iTunes?
That would produce the symptoms you mention if the tracks were copy protected (Get Info in the file menu will tell you).
The workaround is to burn those tracks to a CD, re-import them from that CD into iTunes, save them as AIFF files, and import them into iMovie when they should work fine.

  • Heartbeat time outs some times caused by clocks-out-of-sync?

Heartbeat timeouts are usually caused by the java socket communication between the master and its slaves being slow (or dead).
This slowness in turn can be caused by a system being overloaded, something than can easily happen when we're running out of memory.
Memory problems can be caused by running against file system cache, which in turns eats up all memory, etc.
Some times the java socket connection between the master and remote hosts just is slow, also causing heartbeat timeouts.
Today I had a case where, in a multi-host situation, one of the remote hosts had his clock set five minutes early.
On the master this resulted in lots of 'slow getmessage' warnings telling you that it took longer than five seconds between the time the message was sent and that it was received. These timings use both the master and the remote host's current clock values.
In above case that always meant that every message was considered five minutes late.
Then, further on during the test the remote system's clock was reset and increased by five minutes.
That was it for the heartbeat timer, because it also uses the system's clock values.
So, if you run into heartbeat problems again, check your clocks.
In your 'xxxx-0.stdout.html' file you can verify, within reason, the clock settings, for instance:
    11:52:19.013 11:47:17.605 task_run_all(): 395 tasks
    11:57:39.004 11:57:39.000 Slow getMessage: hd2-0 1957 301404 REQUEST_SLAVE_STATISTICS
The first time value is the timestamp from the master at the time the message was received, the second is from the slave at the time that the message was sent, and as you can see, there is a five minute difference. The next message shows the now changed clock values.
The important message of this: make sure your clocks are synchronized in a multi-host environment.
    Henk.

  • Rendering causes a clip to go out of sync

I can't figure this one out. I'm working with DVCPro HD 720p b-roll in an HDV 1080i60 sequence. The main interview is HDV, hence the sequence matches that. Most of the b-roll is fine, but there is one clip that, when rendered, goes way out of sync. Before it's rendered, it plays fine and it's perfectly in sync. I fixed it this time by just exporting the clip in question as Mjpeg A and re-importing it, but I'd like to know why this is happening in the first place.
    Any ideas?

Aaron I have a similar problem. In my case the footage from one tape when played in FCP appears out of sync with the audo. the original file played in QT is absolutely fine.
When this footage is used in a sequence however, whatever you add into the timeline (audio is not used so I am only using the video track) looks okay in the sequence, but as soon as you render it or even review in the canvas the video is moved. it is not the same footage as scene in the sequence.
i am on mini-dv tapes PAL. FC 6.01
I tried exporting using qt to some different formats. An mp4 remains in sync however only if i convert it to a lesser quality.
the only difference that i can see between fcp footage that works and doesnt is the data rate of the 3.5mb/sec vs 3.6mb/sec besides that i can see no difference.
did you ever find out the cause of your problem?
    thanks

  • PP CS4 - 12 bit audio out of sync - bane of my existence

I've searched this forum and across the web but have not found a solution for my specific problem...
I'm running a Mac Pro OS 10.6.3 with PP CS4.2.1 The audio on these tapes is 12 bit, so my sequences are set to 32000 sample rate (I have not been able to find a "12 bit audio" setting anywhere...only a choice between 8 bit and 16 bit audio...and all my research has led me to conclude that 32000 vs 48000 sample rate is the only setting I can adjust to capture 12 bit audio. If there is a better solution, please tell me.
When I capture 1 hour tapes (as Quicktime files) from my miniDV cam, everything appears fine with audio and video sync as I watch the footage in the capture window. Once the tape is successfully captured (without any dropped frames), the audio files "conform", and when I play the 60 minute clip back in the preview window or drag it into the timeline (32000 sample rate sequence for 12 bit audio) the audio goes gradually out of sync with the video.
To be more specific, the audio is in sync at the beginning of the clip, but by the end of the 60 minute clip the audio is well out of sync (perhaps as much as a second).  Does anyone have experience solving this issue? It seems to me that the problem arises from the audio being 12 bit, although I'm happy to be proven wrong.
Thank you in advance for any insight or help.

Thanks for the help, Gonzchi. Unfortunately, I have already been capturing the audio from my tapes at the correct sample rate (32000 khz) and at 16 bit depth (I've been unable to find any settings allowing me to specifically select 12 bit audio so I've been using 16 bit capture settings), and I am having these sync issues.
Because I'm using the same sample rate as the tape for capture (32000) and all the audio appears totally in sync with video as I preview during capture, I figure that somehow the problem occurs when the audio files are processed after capture from the original 12 bit source to the 16 bit output.
Does anyone have suggestions for settings or procedures I can try? Perhaps some way to adjust the audio files as they are converted?
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
