10.4.6 causes BAD problems on powerBook G4's

I downloaded the 10.4.6 upgrade and now I have a serious problem when I close my computer lid and put it to sleep. It now shuts down on it's own. This NEVER happened until I downloaded this upgrade. I spoke with someone else with the same problem. We both have the latest PowerBooks 1.67 Ghz PowerPC G4 with 2 GB of memory and now running this 10.4.6. WE Never had problems before this upgrade and we both had this problem immediately after. What is also interesting is that when I press the power key to restart it since opening the lid or pressing a key does nothing. When it reboots my clock and calendar reverts back to what you would have if the battery was removed.

1. Does your PowerBook model require the Aluminum PowerBook (15-inch) Battery Update?
2. Have you reset the PMU?
3. The April issue of MacWorld suggests that users experiencing this problem delete the files, com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com.apple.AutoWake.plist, both of which are found in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/. (I would suggest that rather than deleting these files, you move them to your Desktop and then restart your machine. If the files aren't recreated by the system, then you should replace the files you moved to the Desktop.)
4. If these don't help, run Apple Hardware Test from the Install & Restore DVD that shipped with your PowerBook. If that doesn't give you any clues as to the cause of your problem, then consider taking the machine in to be looked at.
Good luck.

  • T61 nvidia driver causes font problems

after my last update a new graphics driver for the nvidia quadro 140m was installed.
the new version (7618) caused bad problems with my fonts. (they could not been displayed)
-> only squares for each letter
it took me a have day to find out, that it was the graphic driver (i didn't expected that).
After I reinstalled my fontexplorer and repared my windows installation several times,
it took me another half day to find the download to the old driver again. (7471)
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7kd165ww.exe
now it works again with the old driver and i hope there will be an update and at least a notice in the thinkpad system update.
    frustrated greets.

    Hi Puschl636,
I had a similar problem. I have 3.03a of the presentation director and the most current display driver.
If I boot with dual screens, the first time I do it, I have to open the lid to the laptop and then close it after startup and it will usually move to the dual screen profile.
It may be a temp fix, but after that, as long as I have it docked, the dual screens come up.
    Hope that helps!

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • After osx software reinstalled if I pause for 30 minutes will it cause a problem?

after osx software reinstalled if I pause for 30 minutes will it cause a problem?

For us to help you we have to understand your problem. That means you have to provide an explanation of it as though we are all Martians. I don't know to what "macro" you are referring nor the "software" you had reloaded. However, from what you did describe I would like to infer you are talking about OS X. That your computer is not starting up, hence you get a startup gray screen with a folder icon that has an "X" in it.
That means the system software is not working properly or that you may have a bad hard drive. So, what you need to do is reinstall your OS X software. You will need either the original installer discs that came with the computer or a retail full Tiger installer disc-set.
You will need to boot from the installer and do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Exporting sliced webpage to DM- Colums created causing editing problems

I sliced the buttons on the menu bar and exported the home
page to DW. However, when I add images or text in the body of the
homepage in DW the whole document gets chopped up and misalligned.
The colums cut across the body of the page causing this problem.
You can see the colums only when you click on the body of the home
page. Is there a way to make the colums that were added to the
sliced images (upon export to DW) smaller? If there is a way to get
rid of them totally, that would be even greater. Thanks for your

Bad way to create a web site. Fireworks is an image
    processing program, DW
    is a HTML editing program.
Create your web site in DW, create supporting graphics in
    Fireworks. Even
though Fireworks will create html code, it doesn;t do it well
    and the
results will be sloppy in any of the major browsers.

  • Having a graphics problem with PowerBook G4...

So I have a PowerBook G4 Aluminium 1.33 GHz and it seems to be having a problem with the computer's graphics. I haven't found any insight on this problem online. The PowerBook will start up and look fine, then as it gets warmer, the graphics start to do weird things. It's really hard to explain what it looks like at the height of the problem. It is certainly still a usable computer, but you get green dots and sometimes purple on the screen, and they move around when windows move around. It seems to react more to blues and greens, and also there's more in places like window shadows. Like I said though, only after it warms up. It takes about 5 minutes to be warm enough to start causing the problems. Are there any fixes? Help!
    CPCookieMan

As video failures are commonly heat-related, you may wish to monitor your temps and fans. Get Temperature Monitor here:
    http://bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
It's free and puts a temp readout in your menubar for easy checking.
The DashBoard widget iStatPro, also monitors temps but I like the other program better. However, the widget will monitor fan performance on some PowerBooks:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Note that is may not detect fans on older PowerBooks. I have a 1gHz 17" and iPS doesn't see any fans.
I'm not sure of the safety cut-off range for the PowerBooks. I know my fans speed up when the temps read by Temperature Monitor reach the vicinity of 140°F.
If the widget detects your fans but never shows them speeding up, that could be causing your issues.

  • Having Problems with Powerbook After installing New(non-apple) ram

I had a total of 768 mb of ram on my Powerbook G4 1.5 but I decided that I wanted to max it out to 1.25 gb. So I went out to the store and bought a used but tested 1gb Patriot ram chip to replace my 512mb . I put it in and went to system info to see if my computer detected it, and it did, it reported that I had 1.25gb just as I wanted. The next morning I was excited about using my newly upgraded computer ( I left it in sleep all night I don't know if that could have caused any problems) and when i turned it on first thing i got was that semi-transparent shut down your computer screen when OSX has experienced a problem, I had never seen this error message before, I can tell you I was pretty angry. I restarted my powerbook and then I logged in, I used Onyx and forced to run maintenance, thinking that might help, but again the comp crashed when i tried to open Onyx. and then again the next time trying to open Entourage, then AGAIN the next time trying to open Safari. What is going ON!? Now I am on my laptop again but i took out the 1gb and put back in my apple 512mb, so far so good but why did my 1gb not work?? I would like to have 1.25gb so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

Acctually yes it was returnable and I did return it. But before i saw your comment I bought a new not pre-owned chip of the same kind, it also didnt work so I will take your advice and purchase a chip that supports bus slewing, maybe i'll go for the more expensive ones just for some added security
By the way thanks for the help,
    Eric

  • 10.5.8 Install caused major problems

When I started this machine, I used Migration Assistant to move from a G4 to an Intel processor which apparently is a bad idea.
Finally, after 40+ hours of work and a half-dozen calls to Apple over months, I had to perform a clean install with 10.5.4, update to 10.5.7 and rebuild the data stores piece by piece. There were some problems, especially related to PERMISSIONS, but the new install seemed OK after spending another $100 on Disk Warrior 4 and rebuilding all the permissions.
Then (about 10 days later) I installed 10.5.8. Suddenly all my permissions were wrong -- I could not even use GET INFO. Spent four hours rebuilding what looked to be all permissions through the Disk Utility. Seemed that the major change was to "downgrade" permisions from 777 to 770, or something like that.
Seems generally OK, except now MAIL through IMAP GMAIL seems not to update properly.
Any known reason that a functioning machine suddenly needs to have all the permissions rewritten?
    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the extensive suggestions. I always try to maintain two separate, up-to-date backup, one on Time Machine, one via Super Duper, in separate sites.
    Excellent.
Thanks for the details, but what you suggest is what I finally had to do two weeks ago when I did the clean install that left me with permission problems, defined as repeated interruptions with the message "You cannot do "x" because you do not have permission."
Then there are three possibilities: 1) you didn't really do the install the way I said to and it wasn't really "clean", 2) you've got some kind of skanky third-party software installed that is causing the problem or 3) you have a very odd hardware problem. From the error messages regarding permissions, I would consider #3 to be extremely unlikely.
I got Disk Warrior because it was strongly advised by one of several telephone consultation with the Apple Expert after I was having problems with permissions. He said it was faster and more thorough in repairing permissions than Disk First Aid.
I think you must have misunderstood. DiskWarrior does not have anything to do with permissions, it rebuilds the drive's directory structure. I can't imagine someone in Apple support would have told you that it repairs permissions, though I suppose that's always a possibility.
As near as I could tell over a week or more of relatively intensive operation, after I adjusted all of the permissions, there were no further operating problems with the Mac (other than one Eudora crash)
One crash is not equal to "no further problems," and just because you haven't noticed the problems didn't mean they weren't there. The number one most common cause of problems following an update is a damaged system getting further damaged.
Your advice suggests that instead of trying to run my struggling nonprofit organization I should just quit and take up management of my MacBook.
Well now you're just getting whiny. What I told you to do will take some time, yes, but not more than a half-day's work to get back to a state that you could work from. Either do it or don't, but don't blame the advice.
I have been using Macs since the mid 1980's and this is a special problem.
If you really had been using Macs since the 1980s, you should know that there weren't permissions until *this decade*. There also weren't regular updates back then, since the internet was not commonly used and typical connection speeds were much slower. So of course it didn't happen back then. However, these days it is not a special problem, though it is not what I would call a common problem.
I should add perhaps that simultaneous with this series of problems with my Mac, the Foundation had a disk failure on a Dell laptop, still under warrantee. It took us ten days of staff effort, PLUS four more days and $800 in fees to a local Geek shop to get that fixed and all that Dell provided was a replacement hard disk.
    How is this relevant?
I have been into my Annapolis Apple store twice during the trevails with the MacBook, but both times they were too busy helping people learn how to dial their iPhones to provide any real assistance.
Did you make an appointment? If you are going to bring a machine in for help, you need to have an appointment with a Genius. If you don't, you will wait. Or go home. You can make an appointment online at your local [Apple Retail Store page|http://www.apple.com/retail>.

  • Bad Problem with Dropped Frames

I'm running FCP 6 on my 2GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook. I've got IGB 667 MHZ RAM.
I hadn't been having problems all day when all of the sudden, BAM, every 1 or two seconds I get the Dropped Frames error.
This happens when I am editing MPEG4 video. I get the dropped frames both with and without audio. There are no other sequences or programs open.
Would this problem arise from taking multiple shots from a single clip?
It's getting pretty bad guys, so any ideas are welcome.
    thanks.

OK, i think i've figured out what the problem may be. When i added an MPEG 4 clip to the sequence in question, a window popped up asking me if I would like to change my timeline settings to match the clip. I said yes. Whatever was changed by this is what is causing the problem.
What would this have changed and how can i change it back?

  • Flash player causes real problems on Youtube

Flash player causes real problems on Youtube site.
I don't really know if it's a Flash Player problem or a Youtube one but Youtube used to work fine back in like 3-4 months ago, now it doesn't anymore.
The issues I encounter with Flash player on Youtube are as follows:
First issue is the fact that after the video completely loads or it loads a big part of it then I click on the seek bar to jump at a specific time that has been already downloaded by the Flash player the video starts loading again from that point on like it didn't actually downloaded that part before. This issue causes big bandwith use since it downloads many many times the same portions of the clip that it has already loaded before dozens of time. If I play a 3 min music clip and click replay or point on the seek bar at the begining of the clip to play it again it loads/downloads the clip again and again and again. If the video clip has over 1 hour then I click play it might entirely load into the player in a few minutes then I click on the seek bar to skip at a certain point it starts loading again from that point on. This is the most anoying thing I encounter with Youtube lately.
Second issue is the fact that if I click on the seek bar of the player to skip to a specific time most of the time the playback does not start from that point on but it skips back to the last point where it was so I must click several times or keep the mouse button pressed for a long time on the same point in order to play from that place on. This one is again very anoying.
Third issue is that after the video starts playing in 360p it automatically changes to 720p after a minute or so even if I had checked this setting "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video" in Youtube Playback Settings. I cleared the cookies and chosed several times the same "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video" setting in Youtube Playback Settings but it just doesn't keep the settings on. This one is again very anoying since my computer can't handle well 720p.
I have reinstalled Win XP SP3 and even installed Win 7 SP1 tried several versions of Flash Player and several versions of Firefox, Chrome and Opera but the same issues occur everytime.
I haven't encounter any of these issues before like 3-4 months ago.

I have had problems trying to watch videos on youtube for the past couple of years. It's been almost unbearable, even if I set the resolution to 144kb! Then a few days ago, I went to youtube and couldn't watch at all. There was an error showing that my Flashplayer was out of date, and then a link to Firefox to get the right update. I did that two times to no avail. I had just installed the newest version of Flash Player as of November 2014, yet this error kept popping up. Finally, out of utter frustration, I did like you did, and uninstalled everything related to Adobe Flash. Then I went to youtube, just to see how bad the result would be, and suddenly videos started playing smoother, at higher resolution, and with faster buffering to start out.  Sure, there are some videos that I can't play, and the newest iTunes seemed to have issues without having Flash, but videos aren't frustrating me like they had been on youtube.
So, yeah, I know what you're saying. I had the same solution work for me. Cheers.

  • Yosemite causes font problem in Chrome

Does ANYBODY know how to get fonts to display correctly in Chrome since the update to Yosemite? I so regret doing the update because all my Helvetica displays as an A inside a square. I have searched in all friggin forums about this and nobody has a solution that works. Please holler if you are a superstar and have a solution.
    <3
    Angela

Would you work around this by keeping on doing the sudo every time you restart the computer
No, as you're then just patching a recurring issue every day. Something is causing the problem.
When clearing the caches initially works and then comes back, it's probably either corrupt fonts, or third party fonts you've installed that conflict with some of the newly installed system fonts.
Since you just recently installed Yosemite, it's a pretty good bet the OS X supplied fonts are not the issue. That leaves third party fonts you've installed. Create a new folder on the desktop. With Finder showing as the active app at the upper left next to the Apple logo, hold the Option key and choose Go > Library from the menu bar. This open the Library folder in your user account. Open the Fonts folder. If there are any fonts in that folder, move all of them to the new folder you created on the desktop.
Next, launch Font Book. With FB in the foreground, choose the option on the menu bar to Restore Standard Fonts. This will move any third party fonts in the root /Library/Fonts/ folder to a new folder right next to it named Fonts (Removed). The only ones remaining will be those installed by OS X. It will also perform this move to the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. All that will be left as active fonts in the three main Library folders after that (system, root library, user account) will be those installed by Yosemite.
Font Book is not a happy camper when fonts are manually removed. It will almost always corrupt its database. So the last steps are to clear Font Book's database, and once again, clear all font cache files from the system.
    1. Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
    2. Since the system font cache files are not cleared by a Safe Mode startup, repeat the steps you performed above:
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
That should stop any issues with fonts being displayed incorrectly in all apps. After that, you need to determine which of the third party fonts you have are causing the problem. Use either the Fonts folder in your user account, or create a new folder in the root /Library/Fonts/ folder. You could just name it "test". Drop about 10 fonts into your new folder, or the initially empty user account Fonts folder, at a time. Use the system for a while and see if the problem returns. Keep adding fonts a handful at a time. When the problem reappears, you'll know at least one of the fonts you just reactivated is bad. Pull those back out and once again follow the two steps above. Keep whittling down your third party fonts by means of elimination until you've clearly identified the culprit(s) and delete those fonts.

  • Problems with Powerbook G4

This is my 3rd problem within a year, i've had a complete logic board failure, replacement, and hard drive failure and now i'm backing up again because s.m.a.r.t has failed again. Would there anything common causing these problems? such as bad logic board or bad memory? I carry the laptop in a sleeve in a backpack 3 days week at max when traveling. but other then it is docked.

    Hi Kanwal,
You have an Aluminum PB and may find more help by posting in the Aluminum folder (this is the Titanium PB folder).
A LB and 2 hard drives in a year certainly is well out of the ordinary.
Normally, neither a bad LB nor bad RAM should cause HD failure. However, one thing I'm wondering about is the possibilty that something is causing your PB to wake while you're transporting it; a spinning HD being bounced around in a backpack could indeed lead to premature HD failure.
Do you transport your PB while it's sleeping?
If so, have you ever noticed your PB was awake and/or warm when you took it out of your backpack?

  • Dual Monitor Causing System Problems?

Hi, I'm new to this site, so I hope this is where I ask this question! My design group switched to G5/Cinema Display screen from old g4 setups mid 2005. I retained my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2020u monitor to use as a secondary display for pallettes, extra files, etc. It's hooked up using a dvi-vga adapter.
My new G5 had hiccups from the start, but around March 2006 I started getting Kernel Panics almost every week, serious slow-downs, Adobe app crashes, etc. It got to the point that I was troubleshooting every week, but could never put a finger on exactly what was happening. IT archive-installed 10.4.4 after we discovered the system had been updated to 10.4.6 and we thought that would solve the problem. While that solved the issues that were relevant to 10.4.6 glitches, it didn't fix everything and little, persistent problems remained, including stalls, crashes and kernel panics. After removing suspect fonts, wallpaper, icons, updating software, repairing permissions, tossing preferences, and other troubleshooting over and over, we (I.T.) finally switched my cpu to another one in the department using data migration (just my user information, not software or other files). Still the same hiccups and even new glitches appeared (InDesign crashing on spellcheck, Photoshop not granting me access to save changes to files, etc.), including two more Kernel panics (within 5 minutes of each other) in the two weeks since we switched hardware. More troubleshooting fixed the app-specific problems, but there are still the persistent annoyances occurring.
I again did all the troubleshooting mentioned above and finally someone mentioned that I'm the only designer in our group using a dual display set-up. Could there be validity to the non-cinema display monitor causing these problems and if so, what is the solution? I've disconnected the second monitor for now, but would love to have it back. Also, we work with a server (for instance, the kernel panics only happen when I try to place a file from the server into InDesign CS2 using the place command, so there's another avenue to go down if the monitor isn't the issue.)Thanks!

I only just disconnected the monitor, so it will take time to tell if that's a factor. As for the kernel panics, although it's always the same scenario (placing images from server through InDesign) they happen very randomly; it's not happening every single time I place a file. In fact, I just placed an image on the server into an ID doc I have on my desktop, no problem. So I can't say for sure that it has happened when working from my desktop or only when working on the server.

  • Firefox 5.0 is supposed to have a separaret Twitter tab, but I noticed today that that tab is missing. What is causing this problem?

Firefox version 5.0 has a separate Twitter tab built into this web browser. However, today I have been having problems with launching the Firefox browser. An error message appears, after attempting to launch the browser, which states that the Firefox browser is already running, and that the process needs to be closed or that the computer needs to be restarted. After restarting my computer and launching the Firefox browser, I noticed that the built-in Twitter tab ( near the upper left-hand corner of the browser ) was missing. What is causing these problems?

I'm pretty sure that Firefox version 5.0 has a built-in Twitter tab. Whatever the case may be, I downloaded Firefox version 5.0.1 this morning. I learned that if you right-click on a tab, that a menu box will appear on the screen. One of the options in that menu box is "Pin as App Tab." If I go to the http://twitter.com web site, and then right-click on the corresponding Twitter tab, and then select "Pin as App Tab," then a small Twitter tab will appear to the right of the orange-and-white "Firefox" tab ( in the upper left-hand corner of the Firefox web browser screen ). Then I can click on that Twitter tab and go directly to the http://twitter.com web site. However, when I exit the Firefox version 5.0.1 web browser, and then immediately re-launch it, the separate Twitter tab is gone. Is there any way, within Firefox version 5.0.1, that I can make the separate Twitter tab permanent after selecting "Pin as App Tab"? Thank you for your assistance regarding this matter.

    BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?
