10.4.9 Printing Work-Around Fix - 10 Steps

VonB has already listed a fix in this thread.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4234084&#4234084
Unfortunately the links he provided there are for a paid site, and if you don't have a membership you're outta luck. I've taken his info, used it and written what I think are clear instructions to help you be able to print in 10.4.9 until Apple releases an update patch. Special thanks to Vonb for pointing me in the right direction.
Hope this helps...
Jim
10.4.9 Printing Work-Around Fix - 10 Steps
Problem - Many programs will not print in OSX 10.4.9.
What This Fix Does - Allows you to print in TEXT EDIT. You can then save MS Word files as Text Edit files and print them. Hopefully a fix will soon be released by Apple for OS 10.4.9 or MS for office 2004.
What This Fix Does Not Do - It won't allow you to print in MS Word if you currently can't, and it won't allow Appleworks to work if it currently doesn't.
Difficulty - easy to moderate. Can you paint by numbers or do you tend to draw outside the lines? If you follow the directions closely you'll be ok.
Disclaimer - I typed this fix out for myself and have applied it to my 5 personal macs and 4 at work. It hasn't crashed any of them, but I don't want you to get ****** off at me if it does... so if you screw your mac up by doing this don't say I didn't warn you. This fix isn't for newbies.
Time to complete - about 1/2 an hour.
Special Instructions -
A. You'll need to be logged in as the administrator of the computer you're working on. I've written this help missive in real plain language. If it seems like I'm speaking down to you I'm not, I'm just trying to make sure you don't screw it up and send me nasty emails.
B. Check to see if TEXT EDIT already prints for you, if it does then skip to #10. (TEXT EDIT can be found in your APPLICATIONS FOLDER on your Macintosh HD.)
OK... here we go, THE TEN STEPS! (cue dramatic music)
1. Delete all of your printers in the PRINT & FAX set up in SYETEM PREFERENCES by following this path - BLUE APPLE / SYSTEM PREFERENCES / PRINT & FAX. If the plus and minus button on the bottom left of the dialog window that appears is grey'd out, you need to CLICK ON THE LOCK and UNLOCK it. You'll need the administrator password to do this. Once the lock is unlocked, click on each printer listed there and then click the minus button. Repeat the process until all printers in the print & fax dialog are deleted.
2. Download two programs from the net. (REMEMBER where you download these files on your computer.)
A. Download a program called CUPS from this site. http://www.cups.org/software.php?VERSION=1.3svn-r6326&FILE=cups/1.2.8/cups-1.2.8 .dmg
CUPS is a unix program that Apple uses within Mac OSX to print. Download version 1.2.8 only. When you get to the site, you will have FTP and HTTP buttons to select where to download from. If you're already in a browser, click on one of the HTTP sites. That way you don't have to open an ftp program.
B. Download and install a program called PRINTER SETUP REPAIR (VERSION 5.0.5) from this site. http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/index.html
PRINTER SETUP REPAIR is a shareware program we'll use to fix some issues... if this works I suggest you go back to this site and be a good net citizen and purchase the software. If it doesn't then don't buy it.
3. Install CUPS by clicking on the CUPS.DMG file twice. This will open the DMG file on the desktop as a hard disk image. Open the CUPS HD image and click on the CUPS.pkg twice to install the program. Follow the instructions to the end. After installation click close button.
4. Open psr505te.dmg by clicking on it twice. (it might be called psr505TE.dmg.zip. if it is, click on the psr505TE.dmg.zip file twice to open it, then click on the psr505TE.dmg file twice to open it.) Once the psr505TE.dmg is open, open the PRINTER SETUP REPAIR HD on your desktop. Inside is a program by the same name. Open it by clicking on it twice.
5. Click the "TRY IT" button, type in your admin password, and click the CONTINUE button
6. On the left side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, click CUPS TOOLS icon. in the middle of the dialogue box, if the screen reads " cupsd is running" click the STOP button located just to the left.
7. On the lower right hand side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, under the words "replace current cupsd.conf file with", SELECT "new cupsd.conf file". Then click GO. Then click CONTINUE in the next dialog box that appears.
8. On the left side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, click on the FILE PERMISSIONS ICON. Make sure that all of the boxes in the middle of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window are checked except for OMIT LOCALIZED FILES and both of the FOR ALL USERS boxes. At the top of the screen in the middle click on the PRINTER ICON THAT HAS A QUESTION MARK on it. In the window that pops up click CONTINUE. This will run VERIFY AND REPAIR PERMISSIONS from inside the Printer's Setup Repair Program. (I know, there is a repair permissions in the Disk Utility Program already on the mac, it doesn't do something that this program does. I don't know what it does, but this works and Disk Utility doesn't.)
9. Run it AGAIN! (the second time does the trick for some reason. just once didn't do it on three out of 5 macs that I used this work around on). This should allow you to print in TEXT EDIT.
10. If you are using Microsoft Word and you want to print something, you need to SAVE AS a text only file (File menu / Save As / Format - Text Only) and print by opening the document in TEXT EDIT and printing from that application. So far this fix has worked on 1 intel iMac, 1 lamp stand iMac, an eMac, a Macbook and an iBook. (Funny enough, my G4 sawtooth Mac running 10.4.9 works fine and prints from MS word without a hitch.)
If this fix works for you, i encourage you to go back to printer's setup repair's website (http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/index.html) and purchase their software.

Use the install disk that shipped with your Mac to "Repair Disk"
Steps for using Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
Let us know.

  • Work around / fix for making a list of drop down boxes

    Dear experts,
    When lists are created, its cells act like top-level views. Because of this, everything attempting to go past the border of the list item is clipped. This is a problem when making a list of drop down boxes. Is there a known work around for this or maybe a fix?
    Regards,
    Olivier

    thank you saish, moving 'the artists are' helps visually, as for the fix, i really needed to store it in an arrayList, resultSets aren't very happy about being manipulated!
    here's the fix:
    writer.println("<select name=\"userList\" size=\"1\">");
    ArrayList a = new ArrayList();
    ResultSet r=null;
    // this is just my way of accessing the database and the correct method with the artist names in it
    r = factory.getCustomersDAO().get_Artist_Names_Only();
    while(r.next())
    // retrieve artist names as String variables
    String artist = r.getString("artist_name");
    // add to ArrayList
    a.add(artist);
    for(int i=0; i<a.size(); i++)
    Object art = a.get(i);
    art = (String)art;
    writer.println("<OPTION VALUE=\"" +art+ "\">" art "</OPTION>");
    writer.println("<tr><td colspan = \"2\"><h2>Enter Artist Name to be booked: </h2></tr></td>");
    writer.println("</SELECT></TD></TR>");
    thanks again, i've got another problem now that i'm just about to post about, how to register when one particular cell in a html table has had its link clicked!

  • How to Work-around Fixed Border Image used in the template?

    Thanks everyone for the responses to the CSS question posted.  Here's the real problem I was trying to solve, I'd appreciate your learned thoughts and suggestions.
    My son was a good visual eye and he's built a website for a part-time business he's created at college using a downloaded template.  But, he used and modifed the  PHOTOSHOP version and then saved the web sliced output.
    http://www.techcheckuva.com
    Decent looking but all jpg slices so unreadable by Google, etc.  I found the original HTML version of the site and was testing it.
    http://www.techcheckuva.com/ComputerTips/FW264/html/index.html
    But the site "breaks" when the text content is longer than the preset areas, as in:
    http://www.techcheckuva.com/ComputerTips/FW264/html/index1.html
    See -- the border images on the LEFT and RIGHT side move but do not stretch -- leaving white gaps.  Also, the center grey b
    Question: how do I FIX this design so the WHITE Center text area can STRETCH LONGER than the deafult length?
    Is this complex?
    Thanks all, so much.

    Drop shadows can be built into the #Container  background-image like so.
    Remove restrictive height values from your CSS.  Use default CSS positioning (which is no positioning at all) for the primary layout.  All those APDivs are going to drive you nuts.  Alignment can best be achieved with CSS  margins, padding and floats.  Below is a quick and dirty example.

  • Kt8 NEO bios work around erratum 93 eta??

    Hi guys,
    Dont get me wrong, you have a great mobo, the Kt8 neo is a very tidy package (your english on the "core cell" splash screen could use some work .
    However, I am wondering when you are planning to release a bios with a work around erratum #93 (stepping C athlon issue with SMM mode).
    I cannot use USB legacy support (and hence use my usb keyboard to navigate my boot loader) in 64bit linux as the kernel will crash as a result of to this erratum; naturally as this leads to the the top 32bits of the address being overwritten with zeros in SMM mode, running 32bit OS's (like x86 linux or even that crud from redmond) has no such issue with legacy mode.
    Since my bootloader requires legacy mode support for keyboards to work, I am stuck booting only my primary kernel;  I reported this to your tech support a month or so ago and have got no response, so I thought I'd ask in public.
    Specifically I have the following problem:
    When setting Legacy USB mode, which makes the BIOS run USB code in SMM code.
    RIP: 0010:[] []
    A valid 64bit kernel address would tend to look like ffffffff8010f784, but something has zeroed the upper 32bits. This is a classic example of the bug in SMM mode in C stepping Athlons; it has to be workarounded in the BIOS, when it isn't then will lead to this problem.
    Hope someone can shed some light; give me some hope...  if not my only chance will be to change to another motherboard, which is a bloody expensive thing to do if you dont have to.
    err!

    Spray. Yes it is. There is a home link at the top of the forum that takes you to all sorts of MSI info. Here is the link to the product page; http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=496
    Note that I also own one and am quite familiar with the product. There is a ton of info in this forum area for them,.
    Killawife Mixing memory rarely ever works right and I suspect that is at least a part of your problem. Mixing memory worked better back in the days of PC100-133 memory than it does now. Some times it works and moving it to another machine may now work.
    OK that said. Try entering Bios and selecting Optimized Bios Defaults on the right hand column. This will reset most of your settings back to default. However it will help straighten out issues. Reset the rest of the Bios back to normal however leave your RAM settings on Auto for now.
    Start Windows and use CPUz and give the data from the SPD tab and the memory tabs.
    Also please run a few passes with Memtest86. Both proggies are listed in the sticky posts if you don't have them already.

  • Why does Outlook 2010 become non-responsive and freeze up when printing to Acrobat XI?  What is the fix / or work around?

    I just upgraded from Acrobat Reader X to Acrobat Standard XI. Now when I attempt to print e-mails from Outlook 2010, Outlook crashes and becomes "not responding".  I have removed all Adobe software from my machine. Run a repair on Outlook 2010. Reloaded Acrobat XI, and still the MS application hangs up.  I have spent WAY TOO MANY hours screwing around with this. I work at a multi-national company....technical... blah, blah, blah,... $$$, time..., infrastructure...., blah, blah, blah. I have read some about this problem in the forums already... it seems this problem has been in the light.
    Stop holding up the show.... society has enough problems.  We're supposed to be the leaders!
    What is the fix, or at least, what is the work around.

    Not sure how to do this except to reply to myself.
    The question I asked is not "answered," but for whatever reason Acrobat XI has settled down and is working normally as before.  Don't have a clue why.  I did not make any further changes in anything.  Thanks to those who read my question and pondered.

  • Printing Problem Solved (Temporary Work-around)

    I've posted before, and others have posted here and elsewhere, about problems printing with Aperture since upgrading to Leopard. In my case, it's been with an Epson R1800.
    Well, believe it or not, with the help of Epson support on the phone, I've figured this out. First of all, there is definitely a problem with Aperture's (or Leopard's) color management. What used to work (setting a color profile in the Aperture print dialog, and selecting "no color management" in the printer dialog) definitely does not work correctly at this point.
    If you want color management, what you have to do is select "System Managed" in the Aperture print dialog, and select (for Epson) "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog. What this does is select the standard Epson profile for the paper you have selected. For example, if you've chosen Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, the printer driver will use the "SPR1800 Premium Glossy" profile (Epson's standard profile for that paper, assuming you've downloaded it). Of course, that gives you Epson's version of what you want to print. If you have created your own profiles, using a spectrophotometer for example, you need to get the printer driver to apply YOUR profile instead of Epson's.
    Here's how to apply your profile: Open Colorsync (in the Utilities folder), and select "Printers" in the Devices menu. Under the printer model, Stylus Photo R1800, in my case, select the profile for the paper you're interested in, say "SPR1800 Premium Glossy", and look on the right side of the window at "Current Profile:". Click the down arrow, and select "Other". Navigate to the profile you've created, and click "Open". This will set the profile you've created as what the printer driver will use when it thinks it's applying the SPR1800 Premium Glossy profile. Set other paper profiles (e.g., "SPR1800 Enhanced Matte") to whatever profile you've created for those papers.
    Now, when you select "System Managed" in the Aperture dialog, and "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog, it will apply your own profile.
    Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem with color management, and we'll be able to go back to color management as it was before. In the meantime, this is the only work-around I've found.

    I was/am totally a Mac guy, meaning my roots were System 7 based, and my knowledge of all things UNIX is being built slowly as needed in the OS X world. While I can make Photoshop & Aperture (and the GUI portions of OS X) stand on their heads and do backflips for treats I can't, with much conviction, speak on the roots of UNIX drivers. I think, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that Gutenprint drivers are CUPS 'compatible' drivers, but not necessarily "CUPS" drivers in that they work with other printing platforms as well. Here are some sources of info:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.cups.org/
    The Gutenprint drivers may be the CUPS drivers for the Epson printer, I don't know for sure. On the Canon site, there are two drivers available for download for the Pro9000. One labeled standard, the other labeled CUPS. By default, when adding the printer, my system uses the CUPS driver. I can actually have the Pro9000 added twice, once with the CUPS driver, once with the standard driver. I spoke with an Canon engineer the other day, and contrary to the advice you get from the standard phone support reps, he told me to definitely use the CUPS driver when printing RAW or 16-bit images from Photoshop or Aperture, as it's the only way to do 16-bit printing.

  • Portrait Printing Problem Work-Around

    One of the problems that appeared with iCal 2 (I'm using 2.0.2 for this work-around) in Tiger is the inability to print Month and Week views in Portrait mode. iCal automatically rotates the paper to landscape mode, even if you create custom paper sizes opposite to the customary sizes (ie: 11.00" wide by 8.50" tall should print sideways in Portrait mode).
    In attempting to outsmart iCal, I created a custom paper size that was "square" - 8.50" x 8.50". Unfortunately, it printed on 8.50" from left to right in Landscape mode, leaving a 2.5" white spot on the right side of the still wrongly oriented paper.
    However, on the next attempt to print, with the "square" paper selected, I found that selecting "US Letter" will give you the desired Portrait mode. This works for an size paper, and works with after selecting an custom made "square" paper size.
    Here's the step-by-step process:
    1. Open any application (other than iCal) with a "Page Setup..." option in the File Menu (Safari works just fine) and select "Page Setup...".
    2. Select the "Paper Size" pop-up and choose "Manage Custom Sizes..."
    3. Click the "+" button in the bottom left corner to create a new Custom Page Size.
    4. Name your new size by double-clicking on "Untitled" and typing. I called my page size "iCal Square".
    5. Now set the Page Size to 8.50 Width and 8.50 Height. Any two identical sizes seem to work, and you can use more familiar sizes for non-US papers.
    6. Select "OK" to close the Custom Page Sizes dialog, then select "OK" to close the Page Setup dialog.
    7. Now open iCal. (Note: If iCal is already open, Quit iCal and open it again. This seems to help the print dialog recognize your new or modified Custom Page Sizes.)
    8. Choose "Print..." from the File Menu. Select your new Custom Page Size from the "Paper" pop-up. It should appear at the bottom of the list.
    9. Press "Cancel" to close the dialog without printing.
    10. Now choose "Print..." again. Your "Paper" selection should be the Custom Page Size you selected ("iCal Square" in my case). Re-selecting US Letter (or your preferred paper size) will give you a Portrait version of the Month or Week view. (Note: If you select Day or List view, it will revert back to Landscape when you re-select Month or Week.)
    Since iCal defaults to Month View, this work-around does not work to create Landscape versions of the List and Day views.
    Until Apple adds Page Setup back into iCal, this two-step work-around should do the trick.
    Erik

    It has been pointed out at www.macosxhints.com in response to my post there that you can manually override the iCal settings by navigating to the iCal application, Ctrl/Right-Click and choose Show Package Contents, then navigate to Resources/monthview.aplmodel/Contents/Resources/model.xml/
    I would recommend backing up the file before trying anything. But it is possible with TextEdit to simply modify the 2nd line of the file:
    <model name="Month" localized-name="Name of the month model" version="0.1" description="View of a full month" source="APLMonthSource" timerange="month" orientation="landscape">
    You can change the orientation setting to "portrait" or simply delete the the orientation text and iCal will default to Portrait Mode without my previous workaround.
    Again, back-up the file first before you mess around too much.

  • URGENT - work around for Epson printer driver!

    I'm urgently looking for a work around for Epson Stylus Office TX600FW printer/scanner multifunction drivers (not currently available) for Lion OS 10.7. Any options avaiable?

    I'm not sure if this will work, in fact I have my doubts, but it's worth a try if there's no other option - I suspect you've already thought of this though...
    I wondered about trying this myself - can you re-install SL on an external, if you don't have a backup copy of it still around, and download the Epson drivers to that,  move the docs that you need to print and work from there?

  • Any work-around for non-Lion-supported HP LaserJet printer?

    I just upgraded to Lion, and while love many of the features (the new mail app is great), I just discovered that my 6-month-old HP LaserJet CP1525nw printer apparently isn't compatible with Lion. Does anyone have any work-arounds for generic drivers that might resolve this. As inexpensive as Lion is, I'd hate to have to buy a new printer just so I can take advantage of Lion funcationality and full iCloud capabilities. Thanks.

    In preparing to install the drivers for the CP1510 series, I decided to download and reinstall the package for the CP1520 series. First, I also installed the firmware update, which had been released since I purchased my printer. Then I reinstalled the drivers using System Preferences, etc.
    Lo and behold, the printer now works. For some reason, after the upgrade to Lion, the drivers for my CP1525nw stopped working, even though all of my other printers (1610, 2510, 2610, 2605dn)  performed just fine without any jiggering after the Lion upgrade.
    Curiously, my first attempt to download the software package for the CP1525nw wouldn't download, launching a dialog that says the driver isn't supported for this operating system. The HP website does not include the CP1525nw in the list of supported LaserJets, but elsewhere paradoxically claims all printers supported for Snow Leopard should also run on Lion, which appears to be true for the CP1525nw.
    Go figure. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. It got me headed in the right direction.

  • Temporary work around solution to no black print Photosmart 6515

    After exhaustive research I am passing on a work around that actually got the black back:  change your 6515 driver to a Photosmart 3300 driver. No color, but it prints black now.  If anyone has a driver that works better please let me know!

    The black ink used in the Photosmart 6515 is pigmented and not compatible with photo paper.  Do you have photo paper selected in the Photosmart 3300 driver settings?  In this case it would appear black is printing but the printer will actually use the dye based color inks to mix and make "black".
    I see from your other thread that you have gone through the standard troubleshooting steps and black is not printing properly on your test pages.  I will ask to have one of the HP Support folks step into this thread, they may have other alternatives.

  • Printing with OSX 10.5.2 and Lexmark 5470 Work around

    I just upgraded to Leopard. Like many people have had problems printing with my existing Lexmark printer. Upgraded to the latest print driver and now able to print, but, pauses. When brining up Que. am able to continue print process, but puts many pages into small space at one place on the paper. Tried removing driver and printer info and then reinstalling all. Still same problem. Have not found any solution to the direct problem and am still searching, however, I have found a WORK AROUND. If you used the print dialog box and select sending to PDF first and then print from Preview everything works just fine.
    So what gives? The doc I was trying to print was from Firefox from the internet. So maybe it has something to do with the App being used. I did not try with Safari, but I will try next. If it works from Safari correctly then I can maybe assume that it is a problem from third party app software, since it printed fine from Apple's app Preview as a PDF.
    Just a thought. Any other thoughts, please submit. I too am looking for answers.

    appleray wrote:

    The compatibility page (http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/sequentialem/home/0,6959,204816596666691854_1177082303en,00.html) says that the x5470 is bundled with the 10.5 DVD so you should reinstall using that driver.
    It's also a good idea to try with Safari. The fact that you were able to print with other apps seems to indicate that problem is with Firefox. What version are you using?

    Similar behaviour for me except slightly worse.
    Manages to print from the preview but then crashes...:-(
    Below is the output I get when started from a command prompt. I've tried different themes in case it was a murrine problem but it still seems to happen. Looking in to the dbus error now to see if it's to do with that.
