10.5.1 solved all the problems

I had several problems reported:
-no sleep
-Radeon X1900 zapped by Mathematica software and crashing the computer
which have been all solved by the OS 10.5.1 update.
I can now really start to work with, rather than experiment with, OS 10.5 - which is now in better overall shape for me than the 10.4 (I still keep a disk with that one on it - one never knows...)

And no-ones mentioned the best outcome of 10.5.3...
...a radical decrease in the number of whiny Logic complainers posts about how much Logic ***** and how much DAW XX is so much better and...
Thank goodness for that!
Of course, this is the place to post issues, but whines and moans when not constructed properly just drag the place down and make it not a particularly fun place to hang out, especially for the people that come here more to help out than to post their own questions. Personally, I was just about reaching the end of my patience limit (if I saw another "Logic rant" post I was gonna rip out my internet connection
So three cheers for Apple, eh?
And nice to see some positive words from Rob - glad it's working out for you. We just need to convert Steve back from Mother Alsihad now...

  • Is there an update forthcoming to 4.0 to fix all the problems? Since it's installation, my PC operation has slowed to a crawl and I'm experiencing numerous "unresponsive script" and "low virtual memory" messages.

Will there be an update to fix all the problems that have been reported, or do I have to bring in the Geek Squad to replace Firefox with Explorer?

If you have a copy of your .muse file that has not been saved using 2014.3, you can downgrade by uninstalling Muse and then choose Previous Version in the Filters drop down in the Apps panel of the Creative Cloud desktop app. There will be a popup next to Muse where you can select a prior version to install.

kweckstrom I'm still a little confused you claim to have been building computers since computers were practically invented but you coulden't figure out how to get a new 939 board up and running reliably?? It's really not that hard.. not like the P90 (the pentium that didn't run)
    1 you check for compatability,
    2 you buy your parts,
    3 you put it together..
    4 it runs.
First of all, you should read an entire post before replying. You must not have read it, because I obviously DID figure it out.
If you look at the compatibility list for the MSI board, it's abysmal. They test VERY few modules, and they haven't tested anything newer. Newer modules (like the newer Corsair XL's or Micron Ballistix) remain untested, and aren't likely to BE tested "officially". The Corsair 3200LLPT's worked fine in my P4 rig. They worked fine on the Gigabyte 939 NF3 board. One can reasonably expect that they would have worked fine on the MSI, after all it's the same chipset.
But no, they didn't.  Not even after upgrading my power supply. Yet if I slap all this stuff together on the gigabyte board, all was fine and dandy, even on a PS that only delivered 18A on +12v.
When I tried out the ballistix, I ran into even worse problems, even after ignoring SPD and upping voltage to it's rated 2.8v. But after upgrading my Power Supply, those problems went away and the system is now rock solid and stable.
I'm an older guy with a wife and 2 kids, not to mention a full-time career as a network engineer. I don't have tons of nights and weekends to work through nagging compatibility or stability issues. That's why I say I wouldn't put myself through that mess again.
    Quote
If your buying enthousiast grade parts expect to do a little research first because it's a fact there are more untested parts and there will be some incompatabilities but it's absolutely no different than any intel platform of the same age..
Maybe you should have had someone with a little more time and skill build a system for you??
Then you may have been able to aviod these PEBCAK errors lol
Taking the high road, I see
You should actually read my post next time. I solved the problem long ago. I'm simply saying that this platform is an annoying one because there are tons of incompatibilities that lead to stability issues. That's fact, and you aren't much of an engineer if you dispute it.
What you say about intel systems of the same age is completely untrue. You'd have a hard time finding an intel board that's incompatible with DDR2 by any specific vendor. You'd also have a hard time finding any intel boards that have quirks with PCI Express cards. You'll also have a hard time finding any Power Supply compatibilities with LGA775, because a specific type of power supply is required (dual-rail with PCI-E headers). Sorry, you're wrong here.
On the Athlon64-939, out of the gate you'll have problems with certain hardware.
Take the Geforce 6800's.... The 6800's don't require 2D and 3D clock speeds to be identical on a P4 system. The bios by default doesn't normalize clock speeds for 2d and 3d, because a 425mhz 2D core value uses power needlessly and doesn't make much sense. But if you're on the Nforce3 platform, you're FORCED to set them identically or your 3d games will stutter and eventually freeze.
There's people with issues on Nforce3 using Fast Writes. Some people have to disable them. You simply don't need to do this on intel.
There's people with issues using Audigy cards (the original Audigy 1). They cause BSOD's. This doesn't happen on Intel systems. They work fine there. (Audigy 2 is unaffected).
If someone's doing research into problems regarding the Athlon64 platform, i'm not going to blow sunshine up everyone's butt. I'm going to tell it like it is. I'm not married to any specific vendor, and i'm not someone who's going to insult someone's system building or research skills because he ran into problems with his latest build.
These problems are VERY real, and if you read this board it's LOADED with people who are having issues with stability. You shouldn't be quick to blame their research or skill with a screwdriver.

  • EA4500 - bridge mode solved all my problems

For what it's worth, putting the EA4500 in bridge mode and using none of its capabilities solved all my access and stability problems.
    My setup:
    EA4500
    Firmware Ver.2.1.39.145204
    Bridge mode
    Network topology:
    comcast supplied cablemodem --- Cisco 871 -- Linksys EA4500
After nickel and diming my home networking for years, I found it's better to just spend the money and be done with it.
I went to this setup shortly before Cisco jettisoned Linksys (maybe Linksys would have been better off never having been bought in the first place, I don't know and that's a different discussion) in 2013 and I've had zero problems and 100% stability ever since.
The Cisco 871 can run for as low as under $100 and you are getting and enterprise-class router that runs Cisco IOS. It's well known, well understood and universally supported. If you ever wanted to learn about networking and Cisco IOS, this is probably one of the cheapest ways to do it. Downside is that the 871 only support 802.11b/g so I use the EA4500 with dual 2 & 5Ghz to support both my 802.11n 5Ghz laptops and newer smartphones and tablets and 2Ghz for the older stuff. Works great.

Thanks for sharing. Will try that in the future.

  • [kinda solved] All the system is down and I need my files badly!

I'm using gnome and sometimes when the screen goes blank and you need to retype your password to restore it... well, sometimes it was blank for a while (about 5 seconds) so I was just wandering with my cursor for a while as it was like 30 seconds now... my cursor changed into this "you can type here" mode so I just typed my login, clicked enter and then the password and enter again... then it all went into "no move" state so I changed my display with ctrl+alt+F2 and rebooted the system. It didn't open gdm at all, I had just a terminal (now typing from my laptop). So I typed "gdm" but it went like this:
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: Failed to aquire org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection ":1.13" is not allowed to own the service "org.gnome.DisplayManager" due to security policies in the configuration file
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: could not acquire name; bailing out
With sudo it was almost the same but shorter:
    ** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: Failed to aquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: could not acquire name; bailing out
    With "gnome-session" even shorter:
    ** (gnome-session:1256): WARNING **": Cannot open display:
So I thought I sould just reinstall all the gnome but I used -Syyu before that. Effect:
error: failed retrieving file core.db from mirrors.kernel.org : No address record
It failed to synchronize any database!
So if pacman and gnome are down in the same time... what could happen? All the configuration and home files are present on the disk (I guess).
    At boot, it goes:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.38-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
And I guess the important part of the story is that I'm ussing barriers=0 with ext4...

litemotiv wrote:It sounds like it's time to chroot and perform a full pacman update from there. If the problem persists, reinstall the kernel. If the problem still persists, reinstall grub.
Well, I did the 1st and it was impossible to do so I did the 2nd and it was still bad (other errors thought) so I did the 1st again and it worked but the system was still not booting (yet other errors thought) so I did the 3rd and it still was bad... so I turned to this proposal:
ewaller wrote:You could also try booting the system any way you can (livecd, usb), mount your root partition somewhere, mount your boot partition somewhere else (not at /boot on the root partition), and copy the files from your root partition's /boot to the boot partition.
but it didn't worked either... now I'm stuck with:
Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determinate major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxxxxx'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
while booting. It's too much for me... ^^'
Edit: 'exit' didn't solve the situation of course.

  • ***Solution to all the problems everyone has been seeing***

So I got my iPod touch yesterday and I have been having the same problems as everyone else is. I talked to an apple genuis at the apple store and figured everything out. He didnt know the answer right off the bat, but after hooking up the iPod to his mac and discovering that syncing works perfectly, I tried it on my HP PC. Again, it didnt work - I kept getting all the errors again and again like before. I would get about 17 songs transferred and it would stop. So...I figured out that the only thing that works is when the iPod is totally restored, then I had to manually drag each album from the library to the iPod icon. I know this sounds crazy and like it would take forever, but one of the problems I was having is that my artwork was getting swapped with other albums to which they didnt belong. My method made it so that when the error came up, I only had to disconnect the iPod and reconnect it in order to have the correct album artwork and everything. As far as movies, good luck. They are too big to maintain a constant stream for a period of time long enough to get the entire thing on the iPod.
Apple will come out with a patch, they have to. The iPod touch obviously takes a little more power than the USB ports can put out and that has to be fixed. As for me, I want a mac now.
Also, if anyone has tried putting a movie on their iPod touch and it stops, but when you click on the icon it still shows orange usage for something you dont know what it is, please let me know if you know why this is happening. I dont know how to get if off and I dont feel like doing all the dragging again.
I hope this has helped the TONS of people with my same problem.

I agree with the last post. Although what "anketchum" offered was a band-aid "solution" it is of course not an actual solution. The solution, like he said, has to come from Apple in the form of a patch. I have tried disconnecting all my USB ports and having ONLY the Ipod on it. Same thing. I have to keep ejecting and connecting the iPOD to get another 20 songs till it gives me the error message again. I am only writing this to be yet another voice shouting out to Apple to solve this issue. Not everyone using a PC will choose to get a MAC. Some might choose to give up on Apple products altogether (although I really don't want to!). Apple ... please please fix the issue. This is my 2nd iPOD touch (had to get my first one replaced. Instore "geniuses" didn't know anything!

  • Might it be wiser to NOT install 10.6.8 yet, given all the problems folks seem to be having who did?

I am new to "support communities" and only fair at the techy stuff. I am "blown away" at the number of problems people are having after installing 10.6.8: printers stop working, frequent crashes, overheating machines, machines running full tilt so that operations are very slow . . . . Is all of this normal with an OS X upgrade??? Sure, this Apple support area deals with problems, but all this unsettles me. Am I wrong in waiting longer for 10.6.8 improvements and being happy with my 10.6.7?

Let me offer the paranoid point of view.
    You might be paranoid because:
    1) You and your system are the only source of some 'mission critical' business information, or
    2) you travel with your system where system discs, backup devices, and support won't be easily available, or
    3) you use your system daily in your business and cannot afford any business-day computer downtime, or
    4) your system is the only source for all your important business and personal contact information, or
    5) your system is your only computer and the only means you have to access the internet and these forums for help.
IF your computer is running reliably now without any problems*,
AND you have multiple current backups,
AND there is nothing in the OS X update that you MUST HAVE TODAY in order to update some other software or hardware,
THEN it cannot possibly hurt to wait a few days.
*And if your computer is NOT running properly now, BY ALL MEANS, FIX the existing problems before attempting any upgrade!!!
Read the forums for a few days after an update is released to see the types of problems the 'early adopters' encounter. If several people are reporting immediate problems with your exact printer, or peripheral, or application, or Mac model, then don't be in a hurry to install the upgrade. Revisit the forums for a few days to see how the problems are resolved.
Download the Combo update when it becomes available, but do not install it immediately.
Make certain you have multiple backups via a backup system that you fully trust. Occasionally test your backup system to be certain that it is both backing up and restoring reliably before you try a major update.
Once you have the 10.6.8 Combo update .dmg file downloaded to your system, you will always have an opportunity to update to 10.6.8,  even after Lion is released.
In addition to multiple external backup drives, I have a spare USB external hard drive just for testing updates.
I clone my current hard drive to it, and then download and install the Combo update to the external drive first.  I boot to the external drive and test my applications and peripherals and look for symptoms/problems before eventually installing the update to my working system.

  • Should I get an iMac with all the problems about?

So, as my birthday is coming up I decided to get an iMac, however on Wednesday I read on Gizmodo about the yellow screen debacle, so after doing some research on the matter I'm not sure what to get any more.
I decided (Before I read this on Giz) to get a 21.5" iMac.
So I have a few questions about it.
1: Does the 21.5" iMac's screen flicker and blackout like the 27", it's very hard to find info about it as it seems it only affects 27", but is that because it doesn't effect 21.5" or because not many people bought the 21.5" iMac
2: Just how bad is this 'yellowing', I've looked at various photos of it and can hardly see any problem, does anyone have a really bad screen with the bottom of the screen being strongly yellow tinted?
3: Should I just skip all these problems and get a Macbook?
    Please help me decide!

You have done your research on the new iMacs so you already know the answers to your questions. It's difficult to come to a consensus though because some report problems and some report they have no problems. It's your birthday... in my honest opinion, go for it.
Post back when you have your machine as to your findings on your machine. That's the one that matters.
Sorry if I am sounding a little tired of this but many people have asked the same question and many have provided the same answers. If you are very conservative you might want to wait and see, but if you don't want to postpone your birthday, go ahead; your iMac may be fine and if not, Apple will make it right. Do buy AppleCare.

  • Does entourage 2008 solve all the new 10.6.3 ical syncing issues?

I am keeping a running list of known issues with entourage and ical after the 'upgrade' from 10.4 to 10.6.3 OS.
I have had two duplicated entourage ical calendars, time shift of events and now lastly, when i went to sync at 11pm last night, entourage calendar was wiped completely blank and will not sync.

yesterday i noted the at had a duplicate ical calendar from entourage syncs. i posted this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2433438&tstart=0
i spent all day on this matter backing up calendars, trying to reimport, sync etc. at 10:50 pm last night after taking on the task of eliminating and removing duplicates from my entourage/ical calendars i sync my work and my entourage calendar went blank. and as if this hour, 8 hours later, not data in the entourage calendar.
OS 10.6.3 upgraded the combo patch too.

duplicate ical calendar was created wheni upgraded fro OS 10.4 to 10.6.3
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2433438&tstart=0

So I run the 10.6.3 Combo updater and the problem is now gone. The password was added to the keychain correctly and I can access my Google calDav calendars.
So the big question would be why the 10.6.3 update failed?
