10.5.2 Finder does not show root volume in side bar / desktop

Hi,
I was chating on IRC with someone who could not find his hard drive on the desktop and in the side bar after using a software. After checking the settings of the Finder, repairing the file permissions, I made a few attempts to make him reset the Finder state, without success.
I made a few experiments on my side. I removed .DS_Store files and restarted the Finder. To my surprise, my drive is now missing from the side bar. I go to /usr with the Finder, the drive shows as if it was set "invisible". But I checked with GetFileInfo, and the /Volumes/Macintosh HD symlink has not the V attribute set while / has it. But as far as I can remember, it has always been the case.
Anyone in the same case ?

Folks,
Francine Schwieder already solved the issue of the missing hard disk in side bar/desktop:

  • Finder does not show all colors from selected color Labels

Since a view days finder does not show all Color Label colors. When I select either yellow or green it is selected, but it does not show in the file list with details, I can see it in icon and 3 pane view, but not in the detail list view.
does anybody know why or how? Or what plist files I might need to delete to get this reset?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your labels work in that User acct in list view? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Finder does not show new files with older creation dates

Short story: when I somehow create new files or folders with older dates, Finder does not show them.
This happens e.g. when I unrar archives created some time ago: the files or folders coming out of the archive get their original date, which is earlier than today.
I can see those files and folders without problems in a terminal (using ls). But they don't show up in Finder when I visit the same directory.
When I use terminal to go into some directory that is not yet visible in Finder, and I open a new Finder window for that directory from within terminal (using "open ."), the new directory and its contents will show up in Finder.
My best guess is that some things have changed in the way Finder and the indexing of my flle system co-operate. In any case, this is higly annoying.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem.  I create files and they do not show up in their respective Finder window.  I know the files are there because I created them and I can see them using Terminal and applications can open them.  If I refresh the window by going to the parent directory and back again, the files do not show up.  If I close all windows and open that specific  window again, the files still do not show up.  If I leave the computer overnight, the new files still do not show up.  As brdsutte stated, after rebooting the computer, the files show up in the Finder window.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Open Finder preferences, select General icon in the toolbar, check the boxes for what to display on the Desktop. Click on the Sidebar icon where you can configure what's displayed on the sidebar.

The TIme Machine volume does not have that checkbox.
I think the issue is with your Finder...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Yes, I have also tried and failed when setting up Home Sharing.  I have followed the instruction given on the Support website, but this is all I see:
Both computers are on the same local network and both allow Home Sharing and are signed in with the same user name. I am not sure what else to do.  Any suggestions?

  • Finder does not show flash drive but it is mounted.

After reformatting a drive to FAT it was automounted to the /Volumes directory. I checked and it is there with all of the content there. Disk Utility also is telling me that it was mounted. The weird part is that the Finder does not have the drive in its sidebar. What else is weird is that other drives come up in the sidebar. Reformatting the same device and changing the volumes name will make it come up.
How can I make it show up in the finder?
Is it possible that I somehow blacklisted volumes with that name?

well then turn that option on temporarily in finder preferences->general.

  • Finder does not show all files from NAS

    Hi there
I have a NAS attached to my mini where music, ... is stored. I can access it from both the mac as well as a PC.
for some reason the mac finder does not display all the files in the directory even though the files are there (i can see and open them when accessing the NAS through the PC). at the moment I only see this happen in a folder that contains video (mpg) files and some event must have triggered this strange behaviour because I could play the file sometime ago without problem.
also, some of the files are shown as a folder than a file in the finder. E.g. a clip called last_holiday.mpg would show as a folder (when you open it it is empty) rather than a video file.
I have tried to re-mount the share, but this has no effect.
Is this a bug or is there some wrong setting?
    thanks for any help,
    Chris

I have this same problem with mounted DAV server folders. I can see the files via Windows and other DAV clients -- just not via Finder. Moreover, it does not apply to all files: some of them do show up. And, it does not happen all of the time: just occasionally.

  • Finder does not show new files, does not acualize

In Mountain Lion I realize that the finder more than once does not show the actual content of folders. Even a "start new" from the stop-dialog did not change it.
A restart of the whole system did.
Pathfinder in opposite did show the new files immediatly.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Thx.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It's a while since i used v5 but I think this is true.
Whereas with early version of iPhoto there was a separate folder for each album, starting at v5 the app doesn;t do that. Instead the album information is stored as part of the main database file. At heart, it's a direction to the app to display certain pics together. The advantage being that a single pics can be many, many albums with no wasted disk space.

  • Finder does not show the content

    Late 2011 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5, 16GB RAM. OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).
When I open up Finder, it does not show me any files I got on my Mac. I can choose Movies/Music and everything, but they're all blank. After waiting 5-10 minutes some of the folders finally load but, when I click onto my user it freezes. So I have to relaunch it. Which most of the times crashes again. What can I do? All those files are accessible via terminal.

    Hi ..
Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try the Finder.

My macbook does not recognize Canon SD1000. Camera goes to transfer mode and it looks like the problem is the computer. Finder do not show the camera at all. (I am not using any programs, iphoto etc...).

Instead GarageBand recognize my keyboard and i can play normally, also, if it can help, those are the Audio and Midi Logic Preferences and the Controller Surfaces Setup with the keyboard connected :

In spite of the OS being located on the main drive on my inel macbook, finder refuses to show the icon on the desktop or in the finder side pane.
this is insanely frustrating as it makes navigating to the root library folder to add remove audio plugins, or do anything, a complete *****.

It is possible that you have become a victim of the Invisible Drive problem. Take a look at this article I wrote and see if that is the case:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
If that is indeed the problem, the Applescript should fix it.
BTW, the Discussions word filter is very picky about about language. Try to type your messages using language the way you would use it if speaking to your old grandmother....
