10.5.5 & 8800GT renders 1/2 as fast in Motion?
Anyone thinking of moving to 10.5.5 with an 8800GT might think again.
http://www.barefeats.com/harper20.html
Boy am I glad I bought what Apple said was the fastest card for motion graphics - NOT!
Absolutely. I'll agree that this is lame that updates break perfectly working items. The fact that a "simple" software upgrade for QuickTime, for example, can break things about your FCSuite is scary and frustrating to me.
However, it's only fair to explore the other side of the coin:
(And due to the frustrated tone of your comments, I know this won't be a very popular sentiment with you. So I apologize in advance...)
But I've got to wonder: what about 10.5.5 was so compelling? Were there specific fixes you were hoping to achieve? (I'm aware that the update claimed it "includes extensive graphics enhancements.") But even if so, why not let other guinea pigs have a go before taking the chance of crippling a production machine? If there's potential for problems you can put your ear to the ground and hear a lot of grumbling within 72 hours of an update's release.
Either way, can't you restore the system to 10.5.4 from your clone?

Hi all,
My first question here is, how can we load images into our application much faster...?
I have changed look and feel of our application, its taking sometime to load the images in IE only not in Netscape or Firefox.
And second is:
So when we view the application in IE, every time its taking time to load all the images whenever its goes to a different tab or a page which is consuming time. And again all these images sizes are very very small. 320bytes, 120bytes, 60bytes.
Is it anything do with HTMLDB rendering engine or we have any workaround for this..?
Thanks in advance!
thx,
r@vi.

Adobe After Effects CS6 takes FOREVER to lock existing frames before rendering
My After Effects CS6 locks up for 3 minutes "Locking Existing Frames" before it even begins to start rendering, every time I need to preview anything - even at the lowest possible quality.
The render goes perfectly normal - it is not the rendering that is the problem - it is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE rendering that freezes up my computer for 3 minutes, and ruining my life.
I am using Adobe After Effects CS6 on a Mac Book Pro with a 2.9 GHz Core i7 processor (2 cores) and 8 GB of RAM.
Please help me understand what is happening when it is "Locking Existing Frames," and what some solutions could be to reduce the amount of time it takes to do this.
ALSO: I have scoured the Web for hours looking for the answer to this problem, and to this point it has never been solved. If you can solve this issue, Adobe should give you a promotion and $1 million.Hi Rick and Greg,
Thanks for the quick responses. Below are all the details to all your questions. Also - just to emphasize again - my rendering goes super awesomely fast. It is not the rendering. It is the "Locking Existing Frames" process before the rendering that is ruining my life.
FREE MEMORY:
This is brand new Mac Book Pro with hardly anything stored on it.
The 8 GB of RAM is split into 2 memory slots, each with 4GB of RAM
3RD-PARTY CODECS:
I am not aware of any third-party codecs in this system. I imported some fonts (ITC Franklin Gothic) and some video files (see below), but I am not aware of any third-party codec installed on this system.
DISC CACHE:
My Disc Cache is enabled
My maximum disc cache size is 69 GB
I do not have a seperate "fast hard drive" or "SSD" seperate from my main hard drive, where I store my footage.
MPEG SOURCE FILES:
If by source files, you're asking about the video files I imported:
2 MP4s (5 sec. each)
3 QuickTime .mov (3 sec. each)
1 Audio-only FLV. (2 minute background music throughout video; used to be a Premiere working file)
MULTIPROCESSING
Turned off, but still locks up forever before rendering.
ADDITIONAL FUN FACTS:
Here are some additional observations that might help:
It doesn't just take a long time to start rendering; it freezes my entire computer for the duration of the "Locking Existing Frames" process - putting my entire life on hold for 3 minutes, every time I need to preview a minor detail... It's a nightmare.
The video is 1 min. 45 sec. long so far, and has 15 sec. to go.
The video is comprised of 99 percent motion graphics, and 1 percent actual footage (Occupy Wall Street hates my footage)
The complexity in this video is that there are a lot of compositions inside of compositions inside of compositions, but even when I go to the very beginning of the first comp - where the only animation is a line being drawn with the "Stroke" effect - it still takes 3 minutes to "Lock Existing Frames."
Again... The rendering goes super fast after the "Locking Existing Frames" process. The problem is NOT with the rendering. The problem is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE the rendering starts.
This is my job and I can't do efficiently until I solve this problem, so I will be very responsive until we can identify the issue.
Thanks again for all your helpful responses! -
Less rendering with DV vs HDV?
how much more processor intensive is HDV? i am thinking of shooting HDV then downconverting it from the camera to my macbook pro for editing. should i edit in native HDV or will DV be much faster (less rendering, and better for use in Motion also)
Yes ... but .. time code capture capture of HDV isn't always frame accurate with DV timecode capture, so you may need to muck about with the sequence, not just for resolution changes (titles may not end up in the same place, once you convert the sequence from DV to HDV)
For a more archival project, like a wedding (if they don't divorce over getting the 70" plasma TV, they will want the happy day on it in the end, even if that's 5 years from now) I would work in HD, create a HD master (on tape, or disk) and then, as a separate project, using the mastered footage, make a SD DVD from that.
I've been promoting this HDV to DV workflow with this tutorial:
http://www3.telus.net/bonsai
Other have differnt methods of achieving the same thing, not least, going out to HDV tape, then re-ingesting as DV - which is much faster than my method.
However, I made that walk through for FCP 5.0.3 (i.e. before the Intel compatible 5.1 version) so, it may be out of date. In particlar, compressor may now 'just work' when creating DVD encoding from HDV timelines.
I plan to revisit the subject in a week or so, when I have my new machine up and running with 5.1.2 -
Color is weird with DirectX rendering in acrobat 3D
Hi all,
I am trying to use 3D capture tool to get the model from another program into acrobat pro extended.
Importantly, I would like the color to transfer to acrobat too. The 3D capture tool does transfer the geometry
well but the color looks very different (with DirectX 8 or 9 rendering). The PDF generated is attached (colorcompare.pdf).
I compared the colors with DirectX and Software rendering (see attachments: directx9.png and software.png).
The software rendering (yet slow) produces much closer color
to what I get from the original program.
I am wondering if someone can help me on this. I would like to keep DirectX based rendering since it is faster.
If this is a bug, I'd happy to report it.
Thanks,
MengdaHello Mengda,
Actually this is not a bug, software and Direct X rendering modes are two distincts modes, therefore the resulting display of a 3D capture is a little bit different.
Colors are correct, only the lighting is different.
Note that you can modify the lighting, see screenshot in attachement, guess The "CAD optmized lights" settings would give you a better result.
BTW, did you try to directly import you sample CAD file within Acroabt 3D ?
Simply drag & drop you sample file, select approriated conversion settings and press ok...
Hote it helps

Scaled down, rendered clips have weird motion blur
I have a project I'm doing in FCP 4.5 on a G5. I have several clips that I have scaled down to 55% and have positioned at even X,Y coordinates. The project is rendered, but I get a weird motion blur happening - like when you're watching a low grade QT movie. I have copied and pasted the sequence into a new project/sequence timeline and re-rendered. I have motion blur selected in my main user preferences (render options) and in the sequence settings (render options).
Any ideas why I'd be having this problem? I don't want to have to go to the length of recapturing the source footage, but I'm almost at that point.
Any thoughts?

Powermac G5 Dual 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.3.9)Are you monitoring this on an external NTSC monitor or TV? You cannot judge the quality of your images as viewed on the computer screen.

Shane's Stock Answer #2:
1. Disable overlays on the canvas
2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

AME rendered files are bigger than in Premiere CS6
Hi!
I have a big project - 6 hours prepared for rendering in 4 sequences (each sequence is about 1h 30 minutes - 1h 45 minutes) I try to export them with H.264 - Blu ray default settings. Estimated file size for each sequence is about 17 - 20 GB, but when I export them into AME I got files 52 - 55 GB ! When I export same sequences one by one directly from Premiere CS6 I got 17 - 20 GB files. What's wrong with AME? Same input, same settings but files are more than duble sized?!
Thx!Here are the screenshots of all export settings related to one of these projects. As you can see estimated file size is 16321 MB and when I click on "export", rendering is about 15% faster and file is about 17 GB. But when I click on "queue" rendering is slower and files are about 52 GB

Crash on long renders solution
hi,
i've asked some questions about crashes on long renders before, and i've seen that others have done the same. the answer seems to be to render more often in shorter segments as you're working, but sometimes that's not really possible, if the last step of your workflow involves a nest for example. for feature length work with some filters applied that often means 30 hours of rendering even on a fast machine. if you start that when you go home and return to work 30 hours later only to find all the work lost that's no fun (or if you're anal/stupid like me and ssh in before you go to bed and find out, not a good night's sleep).
so i thought i'd share my current solution, an apple script that interrupts the render every hour, saves the project, and restarts the render. works well, and if the crash results in an error dialog rather than a crash it can bring you through the whole render. if you get a real crash all that's lost is up to one hour of rendering since the last save. start the script, i just run it in script editor, switch to fcp with the timeline to be rendered open, then wait. have fun and good luck.
repeat
delay 30
tell application "System Events"
keystroke "r" using option down
end tell
delay 3600
tell application "System Events"
keystroke (key code 53) --escape
end tell
delay 30
tell application "System Events"
keystroke "s" using command down
end tell
end repeat
/mattiasbtw don't keep any other software running in the background to which escape, opt-r and cmd-s mean anything that can break something, since i'm not checking to see if fcp is really running or even is in the foreground.

FCP has Motion file rendering problems
I am using FCP Studio 2 on a Dual-core 2.66GHz Intel Xeon Mac Pro.
I am importing Motion projects into my FCP timeline and have been getting problems.
When I first imported motion projects into my 720p24fps timeline they rendered clean. Now occassionally they either need to be re-rendered, not all of them, or they render and then when played FCP gives me the Unrendered screen when it is rendered in the timeline.
This is the most current problem. I have chosen within my FCP timeline to send a video file to motion to process the green screen. After processing the GS in Motion I save the project and return to FCP. In FCP I rendered the video files, including the motion file, in my timeline and some of them worked great. My recent render however has produced hits in my motion graphics background layer while retaining clarity in my Motion GS video.
Does anyone have any idea as to what I might be experiencing?
I have screen shots.
Thanks,
-Tim
Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac OS X (10.4.1)Okay, so here is what I did to fix the hits that are occuring in my Motion files within my FCP timeline.
I had to cut out the underlying Motion project background from behind my green screen Motion treated foreground. Then I reapplied the Motion project background layer and re-rendered. Now, it's working.
So Motion and FCP dev teams, is this common or is it something I'm doing wrong? If you have time of course.
Thanks,
-Tim

Rendering/Exporting Glitches in 3D Projects
Quite a few problems from MOTION 3 have been solved thanks to the 3.0.1 update, but unfortunately, many remain.
When trying to export 3D projects, the render engine produces glitches throughout the sequence that appear as "jagged black and or white diagonal lines". These "glitches" randomly appear when objects overlap on screen, and not neccesarily just when interacting with each other in 3D space, but simply moving in front of each other. I have tried every render/export setting I can think of, but they occur every time, just in different places depending on the settings. They really destroy an otherwise beautiful sequence, and I can not figure out how to get rid of them. Apple needs to overhaul the rendering engine, as it is faulty.
The other problem I am still having is crashing while exporting. I constructed a 3D project with many layers of overlapping 3D box-shaped objects, replicators, and lights, all swirling about in 3D space. It took me about 3 weeks of working on the project to get it exaclty the way I wanted it, and it never crashed while working on it. When I finally finished it, I rendered the entire 30 second sequence in RAM just to make sure everything looked right. It rendered fine and played back fine. I was ready to do a final high quality export. It began exporting in BEST quality and 16 bit float, to a DV NTSC quicktime movie. It was slow to export, but it was working...until it came to the 3/4 mark. CRASH! Motion quit, and 3 hours of exporting lost. I split the sequence into 3 smaller sections, and began exporting them. The first two exported fine. I started the exporting process on the third, and no picture preview of the frame appeared, and it was stuck on "exporting 1 of 854", where it should have jumped to frame 676 of 854. It stayed that way for about an hour, and then crashed. I tried numerous times with mostly the same results, although I was able to export even smaller sections until I had most of it complete. It took two days to finally get it to export to completion.
I noticed that often when the exporting process crashed, the actual program did not, and the 3D object it had stopped rendering on was now made up of ORANGE SHAPES...which was the problem that was supposed to have been fixed in the 3.0.1 update. I had to quit Motion and re-open it to get the object back to normal.
Ha anyone else had any of these problems, and are there ANY workarounds when exporting DOES NOT WORK? Trying to bring the project into Final Cut was a bust cause it made it crash faster than Motion did. It would freeze and crash on the same part of the sequence that made it crash in Motion.Hi,
Don't know if this will help you but...
I had a rendering problem in that a line of text would not appear in a piece exported via Compressor.
to get around it, I opened the motion project file directly in a Quicktime player, exported as a regular .mov and then put that into compressor to give the settings I wanted. worked like a treat

Rendered motion effect looks very soft.
I am hoping someone can explain what is happening. I have a shot that looks great, and when I apply a reverse motion effect, it looks fine, but when I render the entire timeline, the shot looks really soft.
I can lay off to tape without rendering this, but if I export my timelines using compressor, the resulting compression has the same soft shot problem. I am rendering in high precision YUV and motion rendering is set to best.
The quality is not acceptable on that shot, it's night and day from its rendered and non-rendered state, almost like it's being de-interlaced and softened.
SD timeline, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.I'll give you a head's start. Select clip in FCP. Right-click and choose Send/To Motion Project.
In Motion, click on the Properties tab in the inspector for your clip. Twirl open the Timing parameter. There you'll see everything you need for a speed effect. Click the "reverse" button to have the clip go in reverse. Under Frame Blending choose Optical Flow. I don't find it necessary unless you're slo-moing the clip though.
Piece of cake.
When you use Optical Flow, Motion has to analyze the entire captured media (I'm sure you know this from Shake). Just a caveat.

Orange blocks and rendering glitches
Hi,
I've put together a small animation in Motion for inclusion in Final Cut. Nothing very complicated and certainly no more ambitious than anything I used to do in After Effects on my old P4 PC.
However I keep on getting glitches when rendering in Final Cut or even Motion itself. Orange boxes appear and graphics occasionally glitch. Each time I render it happens in different places.
The problem first cropped up on my Macbook Pro (early 2008) over the weekend and I attributed it to the graphics card being abit weedy, but my Mac Pro (8 core with the GEForce) does the same thing.
Is this a known issue? I spent the weekend Googling and I couldn't find much that pointed to a solution. The only thing I can see is that effects such as Light Rays or Glow make it worse (but I need these).
Thanks.

Hello,
We are in the process of upgrading iPlanet 4.1 to 6.1Sp2. We have made enhancements to our code to support this effort, ie making our session bean serializable, adding the context dir in jsp to jsp calls.
Right now we are noticing slow rendering speed for jsp pages compared to iPlanet 4.1. It seems the page loads to a certain point, there is about 2-4 second delay before the page completes loading.
I've activated the monitor for performance statistics.

How come my ps CS6 runs extremely slow?
After testing photoshop cs6, seeing how fast it worked on 3D on my pc I bought the web design and premium version. Time in between was several weeks. To my huge disappointement, the bought version runs extremely slow, mostly on 3D when I want to paint on target texture. Secondly I experiance a bug when I open my file and want to paint on targeted texture....brush shows inaccesible when wanting to paint. I do not mean greyed out, but the moment I hover over my 3d object it shows I cant paint (yes I have my layer selected;-). I have to fix this each time by changing targeted texture to some other and again switching back to the one I actually want to edit. As last thing, my OpenCL is greyed out.....maybe that causes the speed problems.....did not check with trial if it worked so not sure this is the issue=/....
When it comes to the speed I tried several things and now even reinstalled my whole pc hoping that would solve the problem.....it did not. Both CS6 photoshop 32-and 64-bit run slow on 3D.
I closed my trendmicro virusscanner to see if that would help....it speeded up only the start-up process but not the 3D. 3D works so slow that I have to wait 10 minutes after each move..just crazy....evenmore as it worked awesome with the trial version.
Also changed amount of memory assigned to ps by increasing to 80% and even 100%...nothing.
changed in graphic processors settings advanced into basic...nothing again.
No idea what to do next besides buying a new computer....I know I do not have a super strong one but as it worked perfectly I just don't get it. My pc runs this system:
Intel(R) Core (TM) 2CPU
[email protected] 2.66 Ghz
Ram 4GB
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
GeForce8800GTX
I have the feeling it is some conflict between an update of windows or graphic driver (I have the newest so my info tells me) and photoshop...any ideas what to do as this is extremely frustrating?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP
In case it helps this is the copied system info from photoshop:

Installed newer graphic driver as its seemed Microsoft update had an older one installed on my pc. This one is straight from Nvidia site with 3D support. Nevertheless ps runs slow and especially 3D. 32 Bit runs tiny bit faster than 64-bit. Now my photoshop even crashes with 3D: 32 bit holds out longer then 64...last one freezes almost immediately and I can close it through task manager. After installing newer driver at least the 64 bit shows OPenCL , where 32-bit not....maybe thats normal...
I hope anyone can help me as I even checked the system requirements on adobe and mine should be more than fine.
Message was edited by: NethergirlWell, it must be a system-specific bug of some sort that's been introduced, because I was able to create a 4200 x 3500 image made by mapping an image of similar size to a cylinder, and the cylinder would move/rotate in real time. Of course, I have a completely different video card and system than you do, but I'm just verifying that it's not broken everywhere.
Rendering isn't hugely fast, but that's not unexpected with a larger image.
Maybe being more specific would help. Is your mesh complex?
Is it something you'd be willing to share online or describe how to create? I would be happy to try to match what you're doing more thoroughly to see whether I can reproduce the slowdowns.
Beyond that, I'm not sure what to suggest... You don't have a lot of RAM to be working on 15 megapixel images, but as you say the thing to concentrate on is that you're seeing quite different performance from the Ps CS6 beta version.
