10.6.2 Breaks Remote Login and Ping

Hi,
I've just upgraded my MacBook to 10.6.2. The upgrade went successfully but now I can't ping my laptop. Also, I can't log into it via SSH. I've tried disabling the Firewall but this has no effect. I've also seen exactly the same problem with a Mac Mini...
Has anyone else seen this and found a way around it...?
J

I came on here to post the exact problem.
I had reformatted my computer to reinstall 10.6. (It's a long story, but basically my installation was bad.) Anyway, I had logged into my computer via SSH to install system updates and iLife '09 from work. I did the first round of updates, restarted, and did the second round along with iLife '09. After I rebooted, I couldn't reconnect. I thought my computer had died. I came home expecting a failed hard drive or something, but everything was fine.
I've tried turning SSH on and off, firewall on and off. My router and settings are fine -- clearly it was either the second round of system updates or iLife '09. Any ideas?

  • HT1461 Remote Login and sharing

    We are trying to remote login and shareing with network computers and have not been successful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Lots of people have been successful, so it does work.
    Can you explain where you want to share from and to (local, across the Internet, via VPN, etc...)
    Can you tell us what you tried.
    Sharing within the same network is a easy as enabling System Preferences -> Sharing
    Remote Login for ssh
    Screen Sharing for, well screen sharing
    File Sharing
    Sharing across the Internet is best done using iCloud and Back-to-my-Mac, assuming you are running Lion 10.7.2 (or newer).
    If you do not have that version with all Macs involved, or you are using mixed systems, then we need to know what.
    The least troublesome across the Internet screen sharing and file transfer would be TeamViewer.com, and it is cross platform..
    Once you give us more details, we can tailor the advise to your needs.

    No coincidence as you'll see from many many of posts here a

  • Is there a way to access remote login and screen sharing logs?

    I have a very high suspicion that my macbook air has been accessed through remote login. Here's what happened. I closed my macbook air, letting it sleep, and left my house. After coming back I found it logged into the Guest account (which I didn't know was enabled). Remote login, Remote sharing and file sharing were enabled but I disabled them. I can't remember enabling them but maybe I did.
    I am also on a local network with about 8 other devices connected. I looked through /private/var/log/system.log but couldn't find anything concrete. I have yet to log out of the guest account and have connected to another internet connection just to be on the safe side.
    My other user account is passworded and I could switch back to it from guest.
    So if my macbook was accessed through remote login, is there a way to tell from what IP address it came from?
    Please help me get to the bottom of this.

    Hello,
    I want to do a remote function call on another SAP System. But I don't want to insert the other login data (user, password) manually. Is there a possibility to do this. Thanks.
    Regards, Lars.

    Hi Lars,
    You need to create RFC detsination in the other SAP System. And you need to set up RFC Trusted/Trusting Systems using transaction code SMT1.

  • Remote Login and Apple Remote Desktop

    I have two macs: Macbook at home and iMac for the road. I know that it is possible to control my iMac while I'm on the road. I know I have to forward Ports 22, 5900, 3283 to do so. I also have Chicken of the VNC. I have an Actiontec Modem as well as an Airport Extreme Basestation (AEBS). Both the Macbook and iMac connect to the internet via Airport at home. Here are my questions: do I need a static IP on the Actiontec modem or on the AEBS? And on which device do I need to forward the ports; the modem of the AEBS? Lastly how do I do this? I've read many sections on www.portforwarding.com and I'm still not making any progress. At this point I don't want to make changes cuz I don't wanna screw anything up. What am I doing wrong?

    My post here may help. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4504396#4504396
    No need to forward port 22 with Chicken of the VNC you really don't need to port forward at all if your only trying to control 1 machine. "Enable default host" in your NAT setting (the IP of the Mac your wanting to control)

  • Can't Set Remote Login OFF via Send Unix Command systemsetup

    Trying to use the System Setup->Remote Login template in ARD to turn off Remote Login (SSH) in Sharing panel of System Preferences on Mac that is administered through Apple Remote Desktop.
    In Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), I select the client machine, then choose "Send Unix Command..." from the "Manage" menu. In resultant window, I pick "System Setup->Remote Login (SSH) from the "Template" drop down box in the upper right. That populates the upper window with Unix commands. I edit/change the "on" to "off" and tell the dialog to Run command as User: root, then click on "Send" button.
    Progress bar goes forever with no change.
    I can turn off Remote Login via ARD by controlling each client machine via an ARD WINDOW, then navigating to the Sharing Preference pane, but that process is tedious when performing for multiple client Macs.
    Strange, but I CAN use the "Send Unix Command..." outlined above to turn ON Remote Login, and get the status of Remote Login ("systemsetup -getremotelogin"). Just can't turn OFF Remote Login (quickly/efficiently).
    man systemsetup suggests I need to write the command as "setremotelogin -f off" but that failed with an improper command syntax error.
    Thoughts?

    It’s waiting for you to type a confirmation. If you run this command on the command line normally, you’ll see the message:
    Do you really want to turn remote login off? If you do, you will lose this connection and can only turn it back on locally at the server (yes/no)?
    Use this command instead:
    systemsetup -f -setremotelogin off

  • Hi SAP Remote Login

    Hi all,
    I am getting training in SAP ABAP and in the training institute there is SAP software, is it possible for me to login to the SAP software by Remote Login.. What are the steps I need to follow?.  I asked my instructor about the Remote Login facility and he said he dont know how to connect to the SAP software.  Let me know how I can connect the SAP software which is in my institute to have a Remote Login and study from home.  Also, the training institute is not very big organisation, its a small place giving training to about 10 students at any given time..So how can I achieve Remote Login in this case??
    What are the steps that I need to follow in order to access the software.
    Please reply me as soon as possible.

    Hi Ashok,
    <b>Please reward and close your previous post with the title 'Hi SAP Installation ??????'.</b>
    I am assuming this is the same question as that one. you need to install SAPGUI on your laptop/computer-at-home. You then need the 'saplogon.ini' file from your company's windows directory and put that in your windows directory.
    Above all, you need network access to your company from your home. Ask your network administrator about how you can achieve that.

  • Screen Sharing and Remote Login suddenly stopped working

    I have had Screen Sharing and Remote Login turned on on my iMac for several weeks and they have been working fine up until now. I have been accessing the computer via VNC programs and command-line ssh logins from other computers on the same local network. When I tried to connect today, i was given the following error message.
    ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: No route to host
    I have all of the required settings turned on in System preferences and there are no firewalls or router settings blocking it. I connected the two computers together via ethernet cable and the error message still occurred.
    I can ssh from the machine to 127.0.0.1, so the ssh server is running. I can ssh to other locations from the laptop i am attempting to connect with, so that's not the problem either. I just spent an hour on the phone with the apple tech support line and they couldn't figure anything out either. Can anybody figure something out?

    have you tried the obvious - restarting the computers involved and the router?

  • Remote App and Desktop Login Does NOT work

    Hello there,
    I have an easy one for you all.  I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter off a server at a university.  This server is only intended to be shared with ~10 people doing various tasks like using programs installed and storing data.  As
    of now, I only have been able to do RDP from home with it.  Having tried to setup remote app and desktop, it only works on the server itself and not on other computers, both on the same subnet and a completely different IP address altogether.  Let
    me break down my questions:
    1.  Though the security certificate is  installed in Trusted Root Authorities, but the site is only trusted on the server and not on any of the other computers.  How do I get the others to trust it?
    2. Number 1 except this occurs in the Remote Desktop and App window as well.
    3. Adding users would be under active directory administrative center-->[my server]-->Users-->Add  right?  I guess I cannot play with 'User Accounts' in control panel anymore.
    Any help would be appreciated.  Also, if anyone thinks I am better off doing other things like virtual desktop, then I am all ears.  I just want to keep things as simple as possible.
    Regards,
    Ben

    Hi,
    Firstly, how to you reach the server from Internet, via host name, public IP address or VPN?
    If you need to remote to the server via host name, can you nslookup the host name and get the correct public IP address of it?
    Do you install the AD DS role on the server? Please let us know if you need the active directory environment.
    Thanks.

  • Copy Paste doesn't work during and after a remote login session

    Hi
    I am using a Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 laptop to login into Linux. I am using Putty and Xming to SSH and view the desktop. Whenever I start a session the copy paste functionality gets disabled in my laptop,i.e., I cannot copy text from one text
    file to another or within the same text file. The copy paste doesn't work even upon closing the connection.
    From what I have gathered it is not possible to copy from one computer(host) to another(guest) during a remote login session but I am not able to copy within my windows laptop.
    Is there some setting that I need to change to prevent it from happening? What are the possible solutions?
    Thank You
    Rishabh

    Hi,
    Are you able to copy and paste in the putty session, with mouse or keyboard?
    Using PuTTY
    http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.52/htmldoc/Chapter3.html
    Please restart your PC to check whether you can get back the copy and paste function. It can be caused by some compatibility issue.
    Please also run "sfc /scannow", check if it find and fix any errors.

  • Remote login via ssh and public keys

    I'm not exactly a UNIX expert, but I need to be able to remote login to my PowerBook. The problem with enabling ssh is that as soon as I'm on campus, all kinds of nefarious hosts try brute force attempts to crack my password. I've heard that public/private key logins are the answer, and I've managed to get the public key in the right place on my PowerBook (the private key resides on my iPhone, from which I'll be logging in). But I have two questions:
    1) How do I disable logins via user/password?
    2) When I use my private key, I'm asked to enter the password for the key -- ssh isn't properly storing that password. I've checked permissions, but how can I get ssh to store that password, as it should?

    1) In Sharing > Remote Login, do I still need an account listed to be able to use ssh logins with a public key? I ask because currently (i.e. password authentication enabled), when no accounts are listed, login via public key doesn't work. In other words, an account has to be listed for public key logins to work.
    Yes you still need an account name to login to that computer. However you don't need to specify an account in the sharing preferences. You can lock down the security further by limiting which user accounts can login via ssh.
    by default if you don't specify a username when you login it will use the username of the device your logging in from. So to use an alternative login name you would use
    ssh [email protected]
    whereas john can be anyname or your choosing.
    Put another way: if turn off password authentication for ssh in sshd_config, how should Sharing > Remote Login be configured?
    If you turn off password authentication you still need to allow your user account to login via ssh in the sharing preferences or you can allow all.
    2) According to that MacOS X Hints article:
    "Leopard has now a built-in support for SSH authentication with public keys.
    OSX has been able to use ssh public key authentication since day 1 of the beta release of osx. It is not new to leopared it has been around for years.
    Just open Terminal and ssh to your public-key-enabled server. A Keychain window appears, proposing you to enter the pass phrase, and then remembering it in your keychain. "
    I have not used this functionality as I don't use any passwords for ssh logins.
    They're talking about the password associated with the key. But on second thought, that password is being saved on the client, not the server, right?
    I am sure this is the case.

  • Remote login in SM51 Fails / ECC 6.0 / HP-UX / Oracle 10

    Hi All,
    We had a cluster, 4 physical servers / 14 SAP Instances / HP-UX - Oracle 10G /  ECC 6 EHP 3.
    Basically we have a general RFC problem in the system. You can reproduce it simply in transaction sm51: In most of the instances whenever you try to change to an instance that has the same instance number than the one you are logged on at this moment, you will come back to this instance, e.g.:
    you are logged on at host1_SID_01, start sm51 and try to change to the instances:
    host2_SID_01,
    host3_SID_01 or
    host4_SID_01
    (or you try to display the system log or other). You will see (System - Status) that you don't change to these instances but will stay on host1_SID_01.
    We found the SAP Note 662895 - Remote login using SM51 Fails. In this note they refer to the error: "Transaction termination 14 025".
    Now we have this error (we upgraded from SAP 46C with another error in sm21).
    The problem is that we really donu2019t understand exactly what they want to do in the SAP Note 662895:
    Summary
    Symptom
    Remote login in SM51 by double-clicking R/3 instances fails
    Solution
    You can use transaction SM51 to log in to another application server using RFC, without entering a password. Server "A"
    Server "A"                                          Server "B"
            <--Remote logon via RFC   <--
    GUI
          sm51
    Double-click on the server B entry --->
    If host name "B" was entered on server "A" as the gw/alternative_hostnames profile parameter, the local SAP gateway from server "A" is used when you log on to server "B". This results in the syslog message "Transaction termination 14 025".
    The same error occurs if you try to open a new external mode on server "A".
    Who is the origin server? Host A? Host B? In fact sometimes you can go from A to B and vice versa. So changing the gw/alternative_hostnames parameter doesn't appear to be a solution.
    I would appreciate some tips about this Note / Problem.
    Best Regards,
    Erick Ilarraza

    Hello, thanks a lot for your replyes.
    Abhijeet Siras, the command /etc/ping <host> works prefectly.
    Sergo,
    Exactly we have 3 host each one with 4 dialog instances. 1 host with 2 dialog instances and one host with the central instance.
    Not all  instances have this problem, only the following combination:
         Origin                     Destination
    host4_SID_01    - >     host1_SID_01
    host2_SID_03    - >      host3_SID_03
    host1_SID_01    -->  host3_SID_01
    host1_SID_02   -->     host3_SID_02
    host1_SID_03   -->     host3_SID_03
    host1_SID_04   -->     host3_SID_04
    host2_SID_01   -->     host3_SID_01
    host2_SID_02  -->     host3_SID_02
    host2_SID_03  -->     host3_SID_03
    host2_SID_04  -->     host1_SID_04
    host2_SID_04  -->     host3_SID_04
    host3_SID_04  -->     host1_SID_04
    host4_SID_01  -->     host1_SID_01
    host4_SID_02  -->     host1_SID_02
    host4_SID_02  -->     host2_SID_02
    host4_SID_02  -->     host3_SID_02
    The problem is between *_NUMBER to *_NUMBER!
    For example from Dialog Instance 3 running on host 2 to Dialog Instance 3 running on host 3
    For example host4_SID_01 means the Dialog Instance 1 running on host 4.
    Best Regards,
    Erick Ilarraza
