10.6.4 update issues - fixed, sharing the steps

With a sprinkling of kernel messages nearby:
+6/20/10 8:27:56 PM kernel file: table is full+
Problem is pretty straightforward--too many files open. Google suggests it's a soft limit set by the kernel. Default looks to be 2,000 files.
I ran the following in Terminal to temporarily set the soft limit to 10,000 files:
*sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=10000*
*sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfilesperproc=10000*
(Note: These changes revert after a reboot.)
Reran the update and it installed without issue.
Hope this helps.

It looks like nicboman found the smoking gun, at least for those with the SMART product drivers:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11712221#11712221
For anyone else with a similar "installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance" message but without this software installed, it might be worth entering the following simple Terminal command & pressing return to see if something else has set the kern.maxfiles parameter to too small a value:
sysctl kern.maxfiles
This is informational only; it does not set anything or require sudo to execute. I believe the normal response should be:
kern.maxfiles: 12288
If it is anything less, especially if it is a much smaller number, this is almost certainly the cause of the failure.

Has there been an update or fix to the digital signature time zone off set being one hour off? I have seen that in the forum that this was identified as a bug back in June 2012. Any updates on this as it is still occurring in my version of Acrobat X with all updates applied. Thanks.

  • On an iPhone 4s version 5.1.1 it is full with music and I cannot take an update.  what are the steps to get rid of the music which is backed up to the cloud.

My phone is full of music and I do not have enough space to take the update.  I have the photos and music on the cloud. What steps do i need to take to free up space on my phone so I can take the update?

You can use iTunes to sync all the music off your phone by unchecking "Sync Music" on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings, then clicking Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.  After updating, sync your music back to your phone.

  • Is Wifi issue fixed with the 3.1 update for 1st Gen Touch?

I have a 1G Touch and I have been reluctant to upgrade to 3.0 because of the issues people seem to be having with wifi once they upgrade.
My wifi on 2.2.1 is fine, and I don't want to mess it up...but more and more apps require 3.0.
I'd like to know whether people are finding that the wifi issues are finally resolved with the 3.1 update...or not.
    Opinions?

I upgraded to 3.0 as soon as I got my iPod Touch, so have always had the wifi problems. My home wifi works fine, though slowish. My broadband is a pretty consistent 5.9Mb/s. With 3.0 I was getting under 2.0Mb/s. With 3.1.1 I get between 2.0Mb/s and 3Mb/s (once I got 3.9Mb/s, but only once). I notice from the tests that the meter surges quickly up to about 5Mb/s before dropping like a stone to 2.4Mb/s or 2.8Mb/s. I would be happy for this to be improved but it doesn't really bother me.
But with Public wifi, it's a different story. I get everything from logging on immediately and working perfectly to not working at all. When I can log on to Public wifi, I notice two things. First, it's pretty well certain to fail with secure pages. Second, if it fails to connect the first time, stopping and restarting it will often produce a result. These are classic signs of DNS problems, as I recall from previous Mac upgrades.
I love the iPod, but I would love it even more if the wifi worked the way it's supposed to.

  • So this wonderful update to fix all the problems

seems to have completly killed the very weak connection i had to o2's 3G network
while using 2.0.2 i had 1 bar at the most, now i just get "no service" when i switch 3G on
    anyone else have this problem???

I was afraid of that. It will probably be best to remove a lot of older apps that are frequently used and fix the others. I think I'll leave the more frequently used on to see whether they'll work under Yosemite.
    Thanks

  • Is there an update forthcoming to 4.0 to fix all the problems? Since it's installation, my PC operation has slowed to a crawl and I'm experiencing numerous "unresponsive script" and "low virtual memory" messages.

My PC was running fine before 4.0, and since then it is as described above. Almost thought this was a virus masquerading as a legit update (has happened to me before). Will there be an update to fix all the problems that have been reported, or do I have to bring in the Geek Squad to replace Firefox with Explorer?

  • Issue with sharing icon not in Finder (1st gen MB & newest MBP)

I've searched the forums and am not sure what to look for.
Problem: unable to find my friend's late model MBP (Leopard) in my finder. i own a first gen MB with the Snow Leopard upgrade.
    1. i've checked the file sharing access on both computers and we have it checked to be able to access (read & write) to both our drop boxes.
    2. i have no issues connecting to the network, we are the only 2 computers sharing a network through the Airport Express. (i had no problems with OS 10.4 Tiger)
    3. i use to open the finder window to connect to his MBP to put files into his dropbox but am now unable to find his computer in my shared section of my finder window. i went to "networks" to look also but found 0 items also.
i tried going to the terminal window in utilities and did the CMD + SHIFT + K but didn't see anything here either.
He is able to see me in his shared section of his finder and was able to access my drop box with no problems.
What am i doing wrong? how can i access his MBP computer or any other computer (PC based) if i am unable to connect or see anything in my finder side tab?
i read i can manually do it but am unsure how to obtain the other person's IP. or is there a simpler method to do this?
    Thanks for everyone's help.

How would i find the other computer's IP address? Sorry I'm not familiar with how to look for that. thanks for the info i appreciate the help.
Hopefully Apple comes through with an update that fixes all the bugs in Snow Leopard.

I have tried other things but i cant remember exactly there were.
When the install process for itunes is running it changes with the error message shows up during install.
    Thanks.

I should have posted this earlier, but anyway. I restored my laptop to factory version after backing up any useful data, and the first thing I the laptop was restored was connect to the internet, download and install the latest version of iTunes. And Bingo! It worked.

  • 10.4.7 Update Issues

I'm seeing quite a few issues with the latest update. Since updating my system it has been so unstable I actually copied all my data over and did a fresh install to make sure it was not a conflict with any software.
Since the install I'm still having to restart the machine using the power button to shut it off, I have nothing but the spinning wheel and cannot even bring up Quit dialog. Is there a way to do a fresh install and only update till the previous PowerPC update, obviously something is not right with this update.
This is the first time since purchasing the machine new that I have ever had any problems, I'm hoping these issues are not related to anything to do with Intel based Macs to make sure they function correctly. Feels like being on my PC now. Not a happy camper at the moment.

    Hi, Darryl.
Downgrade installs can be very dodgy. Apple does not recommend them, as they note in the "About 'Downgrade' installations" section at the end of "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates." Additional information about why downgrade installs are problematic can be found in "Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X."
If you want to try a downgrade install to 10.4.6 from 10.4.7, you can see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. In step (4b), install the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update, then follow the rest of the steps. Note that:• Downgrade installs are performed at your own risk. While the downgrade method outlined above has worked for many, Apple does not recommend downgrade installations and one cannot account for how variances between individual users' systems may affect the outcome. Again, use at your own risk: you break it, you fix it.
    • I would only test third-party applications in Step 5 as Apple apps are likely to run into the issues with the Previous Systems folder noted in "Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X."
    • Apple apps should be safe to test after Step 6, but you may still run into problems due to 10.4.7-related changes in preferences files in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. Discarding the preferences files for Apple applications that are problematic after a downgrade install may solve the problem with those applications. Finally, before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises. More than likely, your system had problems before you installed the 10.4.7 Update that were revealed or exacerbated by installing the update.
    Good luck!

    Hi Friends,
I have SCCM 2007 infra with multiple sites having a central site server (Windows server 2003 SP2 standered). Earlier it was working fine till May 2014 but now it is not syncing with Microsoft updates.  Below are the steps i took-
    1. Checked the events logs and found the error with event ID 6703. " Cannot sync with WSUS server. WSUS server not configured" like this.
    2. After that I found WSUS server not configured on the box.
    3. In installed WSUS SP2 on the box and successfully synchronized with Microsoft updates (Proxy settings and port settings 8530 and 8531 configured).
    4. Active Software update point role reconfigured after WSUS.
    5. Now still these updates not synchronizing in SCCM console.

  • Cloud Service roles update issues

    Hi Team,
we deployed a cloud service in EMEA windows azure (North Ireland).
There are worker roles and web roles in the cloud service , it's strange that when we update the web role the worker roles are rebooted at the same time.
we thought that the worker role update should not affect other roles , please advice,
    thanks in advance.

    Thanks Nagamalar for
    the reply,
    add some comments here.
These roles, are they hosted from Azure Management portal or Visual Studio?
[comment] The roles are all hosted  from Azure Management portal.
What is the update you are performing, is it a Configuration file or a Package file?
[comment] We are performing to update package.
Or when you apply the updates do you choose all instances or a particular instance for the update? (In case
of an instance created in Azure Management Portal)
[comment]We are choosing a particular role to update. we have both web role and worker role in a cloud service. but we just update the web role at that moment.
    one more question:
when we update a specific role, the step are the following:
    1. download the configuration file
    2. choose the specific roles to update and upload package and the configuration file
    3. check the two options under roles
    4. click OK button to update the cloud service.
in this case, will the configuration files will be treated as a new one or old one.
    Thanks in advance.
