10GB of disk space mysteriously used overnight.

Hi all,
I left my MacBook on today when I went out, and it reported 27.99GB of space free, and I came home to find I have 17.34GB of space remaining. I've not installed anything or done more than open Safari and iTunes. Given I'd just been on a data purge to free up some space, I'm not terribly happy about losing 10GBs of space. Anyone know what might have happened to use up disk space so quickly?
Dave
Update: Using JDiskReport, I can see that 9.8GB of files were modified yesterday, yet they don't turn up in Spotlight searches.

Hi,
Download the free Grand Perspective and see whether it can help narrow down the location of the excess files.

  • How to restrict disk space when using time machine for client backup on server?

We have 10 OS X SL Clients backing up on xserve SL with TM. Now 1 TB disk space is used and disk is full. The clients get the massage that the latest backup could not be finished due to target disk full. Clients run just OS X Standard Software plus Parallels with windows (max. 50 GB per client)
Why does TM not delete oldest backups like with external USB HD?
How can we restrict disk space on server to eg. 750 GB for total backup space for all clients?

johndave, did anyone ever respond to your post?

  • GPO Disk space to use (8-1024 MB) for Temporary Internet Files and History Settings

I am trying to create a GPO that will allow me to specify 1024 (MB) for Disk space to use to go to IE, the General Tab, Settings,
In the box below there is a box fo Disk space to use.  There is a GPO for this under...
User configuration, windows settings, Internet Explorer Maintenance, (use preferred mode) Corporate Settings, Temporary Internet Files, (I select for the settings) Every visit to the page
Set amount of disk space to use (in MB)
It maxes out at 256 MB  - I tried to manually adjust this but it does not work....
I tried to adjust some equivalent registry entries for under content, cachelimit (decimal) 102400 but it did not work.
Any ideas how to adjust it so that it will allow to use 1024 MB?  I tried just about everything....

    Hi,
    Sorry for the late response.
Before going further, what’s the operating systems of our server and client?
As far as I know, we have to use customized .adm or .admx file to reset the maximum size of IE cache size.
If our server is Window Server 2003 and client is Windows XP, we can refer to the following thread for the customized .adm file.

  • Disk space (mysteriously) disappearing

i've been running low on hard disk space so i tried deleting big files, but no matter how much i delete my new recovered space shrinks.  i even deleted 40GB of music and movies and then my space over a few days ended up ar only 500MB.  i continue to delete large amounts of photos like 20GB and the same thing happened — warnign low on space only 750MB.
i delete some more — like 15GB and now i only have 10GB free..  it's a bizarre situation.  feels like some virus.
    so today i discovered this:
there's a 60GB difference from what the User level folder info says and the Hard Drive level info says.  what's happening to my space!!!
    —Caleb

A tool like OmniDiskSweeper cannot be used to compare to the numbers the Finder will give you, for a variety of reasons. You can do better by using a tool that can authenticate to "root" permissions, which allows it to look everywhere. The WhatSize app can do that:
    http://whatsizemac.com/
However, even then, there are certain things that the Finder won't report, since they will be deleted automatically when necessary. So you'll never get perfect one-to-one correlation with these kinds of comparisons.

  • In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?

I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library.  I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space.  I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?

For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
This paragraph made me think!  I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way.  Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?!
This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help.

  • "Not enough disk space" error using Burn

I'm using a brand new Macbook Pro and trying to burn a 60-minute CD (.wav files) using the Burn app. but it keeps telling me there's not enough disk space when i have over 220 GB. can anyone help fix this or point me to a Burn guide? i couldn't seem to find one. thank you for your time!
    -Mike

    Hi PGVPGV,
It is not altogether clear to me which process you are following here.
To duplicate a CD using Disk Utility's "Burn" process:
    1) Open Disk Utility, insert the CD or DVD disc in the optical drive, and select it in the list at the left.
    2) Choose File > New > “Disk Image from {disc name}.”
    3) Type a name for the disk image.
    4) Choose “compressed” or “read-only” from the Image Format pop-up menu.
    5) Choose “compressed” to create a smaller disk image. Choose “read-only” to create a disk image that’s quicker to create and open.
    6)Click Save.
    7) After Disk Utility creates the disk image, eject the original CD or DVD.
    8) Select the disk image in the list at the left, and choose Images > Burn.
    9) When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and then click Burn.
(The above is pretty much straight from the Disk Utility Help files)
It sounds to me as if you may be using an incorrect disk image format at the image creation stage.
Just to be clear, too, is this an audio CD that you are trying to copy , or a data CD full of Wav files?
    Cheers

  • Disk space already used on my iPod, but i haven't put anything on it

    Hey,
I recently noticed that my 2GB iPod nano will only let me put about 150 songs on it before it is full. So I took all the songs I had put on it off and then restored the iPod and it still says that I have used 1.7GB of space even before I put anything back on it. Any idea how I can free up the disk space?

Yes, I did both of those and it still says that I only have 663MB of available space, but I havent' put any files, songs, of photos on it yet.

  • Weird situation, disappearing disk space while using only few applications

    Hello
I got a weird warning when I had about 20gb of disk space available that my start up disk was empty and that I had to force quit Firefox, Finder and itunes.
I restarted the computer and once again there was approximately 20 gb left of disk space again, but looking at it, it started disappearing quickly all the way until I got the same warning. This time the applications I was using were Firefox, Ical, Mail and my widgets.
I restarted the computer once again and the 20gb were there again.
Anyone help me or have a clue what's going on?
    Thanks!!!

Hey Chris. that is happening to me too! I was using iTunes last night to update my iPad. First when I booted up, it gave me a "no camera detected" error (never happened before), then it says I had no free disk space as it tried to backup my iPad. I checked the hard disk and it said I had zero KB's available. So I deleted or moved a bunch of videos, pics, and files off of the computer and got it to have 13 GB's free on the hard drive. Then I rebooted and tried again. Same errors, showing 13 GB free at first but during iPad syncing, it fails saying that I have not enough free disk space and then I check it and its says I have zero space left. Shut down and restart, and I have 13 GB's free again. Its maddening and I dont know whats going on! I was afraid my hard drive is gonna fail! If anyone else can help us, or Chris if you found out what was happening, please let me know! I have an older model MacBook Pro from about 2005. it has been slow lately but otherwise working fine! Please help! Thanks! Tom

  • Disk space mystery

Hello! Any ideas why my disk space randomly fluctuates, up to 2GB? I have about 2GB free space, then all of the sudden the last couple of weeks, it'll go down by itself to around 250MB or less. Then, it just goes back up. But, it seems to last a few days each time. I have not added any files or software, and I am at a loss as to what the deal is...
    Thanks!

    HI,
Might be a good time to check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% free disk space.

  • After Archive and Install 10Gb of disk space has disappeared!

I was having various minor problems which I have mentioned elsewhere and out of shear frustration I decided to stop wasting any more time and do an Archive and Install - preserving accounts etc.
After the subsequent Software Updates I was horrified to see that my main disk was 10Gb down on what it had been just prior to doing the installation. It was moreso because unlike the original installation I had not installed all the Languages, Fonts and Printers which I would not be using, so I hoped to gain some space - not lose it.
Anybody any ideas where this drive space has gone?
And please nobody suggest the Previous Systems folder - I dealt with that.

    Alf Megson wrote:
Do you really want me to answer that question?
yes. I had to ask. I don't know you and I've seen way too many posts by people with similar problems who don't know that one has to empty trash to actually reclaim the missing space.
Boot from the leopard install DVd and repair the startup drive (not permissions). reboot and see if that makes a differences. if not try to find out what's taking all the space. see this post for tools for that.

10GB should not be hard to find.

  • No files appear but disk space is used.  Disk repair?

Hey all, I've seen one or two people with similar problems but couldn't find a resolution. The iPod seems to be nearly full but the songs I placed on it appear not to be there. New songs that I transfer show up all right though.
Can you run disk repair programs on iPods? I tried to run Disk utility but I got some error message about the drive not unmounting. I just want to know if there is some mechanical problem that I should get repaired or if I restore the iPod will the problem go away permanently? Thanks.

That happened once when I had a nano that I was updating to 1.2 firmware. My computer stopped working halfway through, so there was an nano with music on it that wasn't visible. I got rid of it by switching the nano to disk mode, and wiping it clean before running the cd that came with the nano. But a restore works better.

  • New mac mini, why so much hard disk space used

    Hi All
Just bought a new Mac Mini, 1.4 with the 80gb disk,
After powering up and setting up etc, i noticed that over 10gb of the 80gb hard disk was already used out of the box!!!
How come all that disk space is used, im sure the OS doesnt need that amount of room? I have found a folder of about 1.2gb with a load of garage band samples and loops in, but where is the rest hiding???? Seems a whole waste of space to me??
    Thanks
    Rich
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Belkin USB and Firewire Hub, Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse

You have heard correctly, most Mac software, including GarageBand, can be deleted by moving the application (or whole folder if it's in one) to the Trash & emptying the Trash. Some programs may install some support files, but usually not until they are run for the first time. Those few programs that do scatter bits around (can you say Microsoft?) should come with an uninstaller.
There are freeware/shareware programs to remove unneeded language files. DeLocalizer & Monolingual come to mind.
But, since you are setting this Mac mini up from scratch, you might want to do what I do with a new Mac. I erase & reinstall the OS & bundled software from the CD/DVDs that come with it, doing a custom install of both so that I get only what I want. For me, this was important because I don't need any additional printer drivers & I already had full versions of Office & iWork to install.

  • Allocating Disk Space using capture now.

FCE seems to freeze up with a messege that says "Allocating Disk Space" when using capture now.

If you have an anti-virus app running disable it.
Check FCE>System Settings>Scratch Discs. Make sure the Limit Capture Now has a value entered and the box is ticked. Default is 30 mins, it can be changed to suit the capture.
If you find a huge file with nothing in it this a probably a result of not having a value set. Delete it and start over.
When no value is set, FCE does not know how much drive space to allocate, so it grabs everything it can get it's hands on. That's why you can get that huge useless file.

  • Losing disk space after upgrade of Mavericks

The download and installation was successful. However, after restarting and before upgrading all free iWork apps including iTunes and iPhoto. I noticed that after recovering about 10gb of disk space, it started reducing it again.  I continued with the upgrade of the said apps, but after leaving my mbp for a few hours it started losing disk space again. this time its agresssive, i've lost around 40gb overnight, without using any apps or activating any updates.  Please help!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.
