15 inch Retina Macbook Pro making an annoying whining sound

My 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro suddenly began making a loud whining sound. I have been working her hard recently, but even when I let her rest the sound continues. It seems to be coming from the upper left conner of the machine near the W key. Any suggestions how, or if, I can fix this?

SMC reset should fix it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Can I wirelessly display (like via bluetooth) the screen of my 15 inch, late 2013, Retina Macbook Pro, to a thunderbolt display ?

They can fix it, but not for free. Macbook repairs supposedly are classified into 3 tiers by an Apple Rep, I for least amount of damage and III for most. I have a dent in the corner of my MBP and it would require new housing to get it fixed. $450 (tier I) or ~half the cost of a Macbook Air on education discount... HA.
If it doesn't affect your everyday computing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's awful, but welcome to the club

  • 15 inch Retina macbook pro running hot/overheating.. what to do?

    Hello,
I just got my new retina macbook pro. FIrst impressing- the thing is awesome. However, In the process of putting all the stuff from my old PC onto this new machine, I was importing photos into iPhoto. I noticed the computer getting very hot after importing about 1000/5000 photos, so cancelled the import. I downloaded temperature guage from the app store, as well as iStat Pro. Below is a screenshot taken with both monitoring apps open while attempting the import. (these were the only three programs running at the time).
This is a little unsettling.. a 3800$ computer that 'overheats' while attemping to import photos...? Is this normal? I called apple and they said to bring it into a store and the tecs will have a look. I asked if i could simply return the computer (as it hasnt been 14 days yet), but i was told i would be charged a 10% (or roughly 380$) restocking fee...

I note that the CPU temperature shown by iStat pro and Temperature gauge vary significantly.  What the former reports is satisfactory but not the latter.  Both cannot be right.  I have used iStat pro and Temperature Monitor and they are always very close to each others data.  You might download same and see how it compares with the other two temperature monitors:
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
For a little peace of mind a trip to the Apple store genius bar would be a good idea.  At least it will tell you if the 'Temperature Guage application is accurate or not.
    Ciao.

  • I want to buy a 15 inch retina MacBook Pro what configruation do I need?

I would like to buy a 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display but can't decide on a confiruation to get. Here are the things I do on my computer
Use all of the pre-loaded apps Mail, Safari, etc.
Download more from the Mac App Store
Import pictures from my iPhone 5 and iPad 4 and edit them in Aperture
    Use iLife and iWork
    My budget is around $2600
I will either customize it so it cost less than $2600 or just buy the standard $2199 model.
Please let me know what you all think as to what configuration I should buy!
This will be to replace my 17 inch MacBook Pro from April 2010 whitch has a 2.53GHz Intel Dual-Core i5 processor, 4GB 1067MHz RAM, 500GB Hard Drive

If I were configuring a Retina model, I would make sure that I ordered the maximum 16GB of RAM and the 512GB solid state storage. If that's $2,600, then go for it.
Through MacMall, that configuration is $3,183.99. But I think that it would be worth it.
    Good luck,

  • Should I get a £999 13 Inch Macbook Air with 128 GB SSD or a £1249 13 Inch Retina Macbook Pro with 128GB SSD

I am a twelve year old boy ready to get my first Mac computer. I already have an iPad 3 and I really like it. Now I'm going to start saving up for a Mac and I am down to two choices, as listed above. I'm going to be using it for web browsing, games, drawing, word documents, presentations, movies, video calling, messages, Windows 8 and I will be using quite a few apps from the Mac App Store.
Also could you tell me how long Apple support the MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X and how long they support the MacBook Pro with the latest OS.
I also want to know if it is worth paying £200 to upgrade a 128GB SSD to a 256GB one.

If past history serves, Apple will support the 2013 models for 5-7 years with new OS upgrades but there's no guarantee. However that doesn't mean the computer will be worthless. I have a 10-11 year old Mac serving as a guest computer running an OS two versions old. It still does everything our guests would want to do while they are visiting.
The 128GB drive is the smallest I'd recommend and for a teen (who is likely to collect media and lots of software) I'd call the 256GB a very good idea - especially ince you indicate you want to run Win8 too.
The retina MacBook has a gorgeous display and has a faster processor but all those extra pixels push the GPU to the max. Until faster GPUs come along I'm avoiding the retina computers.

  • I am unable to open up pdf files on safari on my 15 inch retina macbook pro

I just purchased a macbook pro with retina display. When I was attempting to open up a pdf file on my safari, it did not pop up and a blank page showed up. I was wondering the pdf file could not open? What can i do?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro making a constant whirring sound?

I've reset the SMC, run all the diagnostics possible, made sure there are no runaway apps, and restarted my computer. Nothing has helped. I've had it for less than six months. This hasn't happened before. It isn't over heated. It started whirring before I even started using any apps. I've been troubleshooting for over an hour and nothing is helping. What's going on?

spotlight still indexing the drive, the armature bar is swinging back and forth and the HD is clicking
macbook Pro uses (current ones) use Toshiba 2.5" 5400RPM drives, even on Toshibas own documentation, these drives are about 15% nosier than most HD are.
I have several of these drives, they are nosier than many.

  • Does the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro 2.6-GHz version have the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M discrete graphics or is it just the 2.3-GHz version?

Topic title pretty much says it all. I want the 15-inch 2.6-GHz version with the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M discrete graphics or is it just the 2.3-GHz version?

Yes, I have. The hardware specs are shown for this model, but when you dig further into purchasing it, it doesn't list the graphics cards under "hardware".
My main concern came from reading somewhere (maybe on this forum) that some guy said he chose the 2.3 version so he could get the discrete graphics. I thought all 15inch 2.3 and above had both:
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

  • 15 inch retina macbook pro graphical issue

I noticed yesterday that i started getting a pixelated "flicked" across my screen. typically it's the lower half and it tends to go across the screen in a rectangular bar shape mainly. . it does happen when im not using video, but it does appear more often when im using a video. it's very very worrysome to me, but happens so fast it's really hard to describe. I'm most afraid that it could be a hardware glitch, since it started yesterday out of the blue. is there any other people reporting this problem? if so is it covered under warruenty?

no it appears for a very short time and goes away without any particular ryme or reason. it does NOT show up near the eages or when im scrolling (safari in particular can look glitchy when scrolling). it appears right across my screen from one side to the other. it appears so fast that the pixels might have color, but i can't tell because then it's gone. as i said its shape tends to be a rectantgular pattern going across the entire screen, and i have not noticed it before. quiet odd to say the least.

  • Need advice for external display for my retina Macbook Pro.

I got my 15-inch retina Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) two months ago. It’s a fantastic machine but I am having some regrets concerning screen size. I want to be able to enjoy movies on my computer but 15-inch is just too small. So I am considering purchasing an external display for my Macbook Pro. I am thinking about a 25’’+ monitor (or TV) which can offer me closest experience to the retina one on my Macbook. I don’t want 4K monitors though, as most of the contents I consume are full HD 1080P. But I do care about PPI a lot (for browsing).
What kind of display can help me obtain this similar experience I get on my Mac? Any recommendations? Thanks.

I have the 15" MacBook Pro, Retina, Mid 2012 also, same exact model.  Kind of the same thing is happening with me.  I will intermitentyl get a flickering on the bottom 1/3 of the screen, all the way across.  It flickers/flashes on and off on the bottom half or third of the screen, when I am typing or when I am perfectly stil, doen't really matterl.  Only happens for a split second, but can do it multiple times, or sometimes not at all.  I can go tens of minutes without i hapenning, but I can also go tens of seconds with it happening multiple times.
It never goes black or grey or "out" at all, just randomly flickers throughout the day.
I do get burned-in images all the time, but they disappear within seconds.  But this flickering is definitely worrysome.  I did get the the Apple Care, so I am not too worried as Apple is usually good about this kind of thing, but I do have a similar problem to you and wanted to document this.  I didnt find many other people oiut there with this problem, so let me know what has gone on since your post on the New Year.  Any solution?  Did you call Apple?
    Thanks webrian.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Issues Since Updating To Yosemite

    Hey everyone,
I have the early 2013 15 Inch Retina MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and ever since I updated to Yosemite I have had many issues which are becoming serious problems.
Problem 1) 9/10 times the laptop will not turn off when shut down is pressed. The Finder disappears, the dock stays put and then does nothing. I have to manually hold the power button to get the laptop to turn off.
Problem 2) Audio issues. I have an external Audio Interface that I use for recording and playback through my studio monitors. Randomly when I'm watching videos the audio of the video will slow down so the audio sounds lowered in pitch while the video stays the same speed. While I'm listening to music through iTunes there have been occasions where the music has actually sped up at least 10x of it's original speed.
Problem 3) Connecting to Apple TV's crashes my computer. At college we have Apple TV's that we can connect Macs and iPads to to showcase work and when I connect my MacBook to it, the Macbook crashes and has to be forced rebooted.
Problem 4) The computer is just generally slower. When browsing files in the finder and using applications such as iMovie the computer is noticeably slower than when before upgraded.
I have tried contacting Apple support but was told that I had to purchase an incident report for £25. After spending £1800 on a Laptop I'm not paying £25 just to talk to someone. Has anyone had these issues? Any fixes?
    Thanks!

Well, if your Contacts have disappeared, then under System Preferences, click on iCloud and make sure you are signed into iCloud. If you are not, sign in. If you are, sign out and then back in to see if that restores your contacts.
I take it you have already restarted your Mac? If not, do that as well.
    Best of luck,

  • New 13 Inch Retina / Premiere Pro CC performance?

    Hi all,
Been contemplating getting a new computer and really like the size and portability of the 13 inch Retina Macbook Pro.
Does anyone own a new Retina 13 inch Macbook Pro and can talk about performance with Adobe Premiere CC?  I would most likely max it out with ram, etc.
I currently edit hacked 1080p GH2 footage at work and would be doing some of that with the laptop. I also hope to upgrade to the GH4. I doubt I'll mess around much with 4k, but their highest bit-rate 1080p is something I hope to edit natively.   (aka the 200 Mbps all-intra .mov )
    Thanks for your help!

There haven't been many reports of problems with 13" Retina Display models.
How new is your computer? If you purchased it within 14 days you can exchange it or get a full refund. If it's been more than 14 days, you're still under warranty and should take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine and fix it - free of any charges.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Repairing broken Retina Macbook Pro

How to repair my broken retina macbook pro?
My 15 inch retina macbook pro fell on the floor and is damaged. The screen is completely apart and the aluminum unibody shows many signs of damage. I want to see what my repair options are here. The pro is still under Apple's one year limited hardware warranty. What does it cost? Can I have apple repair it for me for a less price or any other reliable repair specialists? I just don't want to throw the $2500 pro machine in trash when some of its parts clearly can be of use.

Doesn't cover user inflicted damage, only factory defects.

Third party companies likely don't have access to the sources of the Retina Displays or parts to switch yours as it's a rather new machine.
So to fix it would have to go to Apple for repairs and no warranty/AppleCare as the original damage could have further issues later.
I just don't want to throw the $2500 pro machine in trash when some of its parts clearly can be of use.
Well if you decide the repair bill is too much or too involved or can't be done reasonably (like just the display replaced), then sell the machine for parts to a online Mac repair shop, they will certainly welcome the spare parts to use in others machines.
Your likely better off with a cheap $400-$600 Windows PC next time around.

  • Display gone crazy on Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro

Could somebody please tell me what is wrong with my Late 2013 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro? Please check the pics here:

Looks as if you've a graphics card and/or screen problem - I would lean more towards the GPU.
You should take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them evaluate the problem. This diagnosis should be free as should an estimate for repair (if you're not still under warranty).

  • New Retina Macbook Pro - strange whining Sound

    Hi,
i just received my new Macbook Pro Retina - brilliant machine. But suddenly it starts to whine - I can hear the whining while sitting in front of the notebook, so its pretty loud. The sound does appear when I move windows or enter mission control. The sound disappears when I plug in the power supply. I made a recording: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oysfex8imnggefe/RMBP_whine.m4a
None of my Macbook's I owned before made such noises. Is my notebook faulty?
    Thanks

So I had this problem on and off with my rMBP the whining sound was coming from the top left corner of my computer. I made a recording too showed it to the genius bar - I was allowed a replacement (though the genius bar guy didnt really say much on the matter) - just got my replacement unit in today (had to go through apple.com since mine was a special order/upgrade) and it also makes the same very annoying whining sound. The 2 units I have had so far have this problem on and off (I dont remember if it was when I had the power adaptor on or not). I did notice however that if I closed the lid and opened it back up or restarted the sytem the problem would go away.
Dont really know what to do now this was acting as my primary computer. Dont really see the point of ordering another replacement as it seems this is a common problem (most people probobly havent realized it yet). In addition my replacement unit has noticeable gaps between the bottom lid and the rest of the unibody - dont know if the screws werent tightened enough or what but this too is annoying. Havind had 2 SSD macs (both Airs) previously I was hoping the build and low noise level to follow suit with the retina mac.
