17" MacBook Pro Question

I'm thinking about getting a 17"MBP to replace my 17" HP machine (running WinXP) as my main computer. I'd love an iMac, but don't have the space in my room for a desktop setup.
Anyone use the 17" MBP as a desktop replacement? If so, how do they like it?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Steven

The iMac is only about 4.5" wider than the 17" MBP. There are custom options for fitting an iMac is small places. I have mine suspended from an articulating arm. The iMac doesn't even touch the desk.

Plus, you could buy two 21.5" iMacs for the price of a 17" MBP. The iMac will feel much faster too.

  • Older MacBook Pro Questions

Im trying to sell my MacBook Pro so I have three questions.
    1. The battery died so I need to replace it, what is the best one/way to go about it? I have seen some products on eBay but they kinda worry me.
    2. What should I do before I sell it, as in clearing everything off the system?
    3. How much do you think I could get for it?
    MackBook Pro OS 10.5.8
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    250GB HDD
    Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT
    VRAM 256MB

While checking on Craigslist you may be able to find some batteries for it.  This may work because you can test them out and have the person let you test them out before you give them money for it.  As long as things work, you should be okay.  As far as the price, you are going to want to look for an average and what you think you want to get out of it.  If you aren't totally sure, put a price that you would like with an idea of what you'll actually take and put it OBO and if someone doesn't want to pay the price you have they'll give you some offers if they want it.  From that point it is all a matter of what you actually want to get for it.  If you want to take what they are offering for it, then it's up to you and you can sell it at that price.  If not then you hold onto it longer so you can get what you want to get for it.

  • General Macbook Pro questions...

I am VERY new to the Mac world and had a few questions. Any answers are greatly appreciated!
*The bottom of my macbook pro gets hot. I was told not to set it on my lap or another soft surface because it doesnt allow air in or out. My question is, I have bought a carbon fiber protective case for it. Is that ok to use or will that also prevent the flow of air?
*Is it ok to use my macbook pro while it is pluged in? Meaning will it damage the battery in any way If I use it while it is charging?
*Does any one have any tips on preventive maintence? I would just like to know is there anything I can do to keep my investment in top performance.
    Thanks for any answers!

The laptop does get hot, more so with greater activity and using the higher-performance graphics cards. Generally-speaking, a protective case will impede some heat transfer and MAY cause overheating, though presumably the manufacturer of the protective case has tested it to see if there's a problem. It's not so much a matter of air-flow (there's no vents/fans there), but radiant dissipation. The aluminum unibody is very robust, so you may not want to use the case anyway.
It's perfectly fine to use the computer when it's plugged in. It won't damage the battery in any way or reduce the battery life. However, it's good to, every once in a while, exercise the battery by using it up completely and then recharging (maybe every month or two).
There's really no preventative maintenance required. The system should perform any system maintenance periodically and independently. The only thing you really want to look out for is that it's best if you never let your hard-disk get > 90% full.
As for Time Machine, it's not "like a hard-drive". Time Machine is a versioning backup system. That is to say, it maintains a copy of your system and past versions of files on that system. If you delete a file (or e-mail message) by accident, you can recover it through Time Machine. When the user activates Time Machine, they see the current window filled with messages/icons and a bar indicating various points in time. You slide your mouse over the bar to select a particular point in time, and it restores your files to the way there were at that time. It's not a conventional backup solution (like mirroring the
disk), but it does solve a problem. You might prefer more conventional backup solutions, such as mirroring the disk to create a bootable backup disk.
You can use your old WD external 2TB drive from your Windows PC with your Mac. If you intend to use it exclusively with your Mac, I would suggest that you reformat it using the Mac filesystem (HFS+) and a GPT-type partition table (what Macs use, but also high-end PCs and servers).

  • Video died on my MacBook Pro, question on Time Machine

    Hi -
The video died on my MacBook Pro (2007 - after some research I see there was a recall on it due to a manufacturer's defect). I hadn't backed up in a few months - so would like to back it up before I take the computer into the store. I have mounted the MacBook Pro on another computer by pressing Option + Power and all seems fine on the hard drive. I did try to run Time Machine though, and the computer doesn't seem to recognize that it has backed up on this same drive previously - it wants to back up the entire computer. Is there a way for the MacBook Pro to recognize the firewire drive and run Time Machine as it did before? I am running  OS 10.6.8
    Thank you!

I had done that as well (used Carbon Copy Cloner too! ) but I was concerned in the case I had to buy a new computer with a later OS (and being unable to mount the old drive/OS on the new computer to transfer the data - I ran into that issue earlier) - but I see now there is also a Migration Assistant that can help with that if I do indeed have to buy a new machine. Thank you!

  • Two MacBook Pro Questions, Help!

Hi all, I'm currently going through two seperate problems with my currents macbook pro.  I bought it in summer 2010 and all the software is updated.
In the past 24 hours, I have gotten the "Your mac has restarted because of a problem," 3 times. And it is starting to freak me out because I have seen it could be logic board, GPU, hardware, etc.  I reset my PRAM/NVRAM, today as well. I don't have apple care and my warrenty is already expired, plus I am a college student with a budget, and I really don't live close to an apple store for the genius bar, I have been thinking maybe Geek Squad but I heard they are overpriced. I have no idea what to do.
The other issue is an odd one, my wireless connection is acting weird.  I use Google Chrome as my browser and some websites load and others do not.  For example twitter will load but facebook will not. I just get the "no data received" message. I have reset my modem (main and router) and have also tried using other browsers (Firefox and Safari) and the same problem happens on both browsers. This right now ***** because I have homework I need to submit online and my schools blackbload will not load to submit assignments.
If Anyone has any idea on any of these issues, PLEASE any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

Your model is subject to a replacement program for the logicboard due to a defective GPU. It lasts 3 years from the date of purchase. If this is already expired, Apple may or may not still replace your logicboard. It is ultimately at the discretion of the store manager. If you don't qualify, your other option would be a flat rate repair, for ~$300, which Apple will repair anything wrong with the machine for this fee. See the user tip and support article below:

  • 30" cinema display + MacBook Pro Question

Before purchasing a display, I was under the impression that to connect the 30" cinema HD to my MacBook Pro, I also required a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. However, I've since been able to connect it straight to my MacBook Pro with only the adapters that came with the monitor. Am I missing something here?
Can anyone tell me if I'm correct in thinking I didn't actually need the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter? Or am I suppose to connect the monitor display adapters to the Mini displayport, then the mini to my MacBook Pro?
    Hope that made sense.
    Kind Regards.
    Tanya.

Older MacBook Pro's have a dual-link DVI port, so the display can be used with no adapter. The new MacBook Pro has a Mini DisplayPort, so the 30" needs the Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter

  • Help Please IMac and macbook pro Question

I brought my daughters Imac home for my husband and I to use. We bought her a macbook pro for college.  Her laptop is saying something about not recognizing her informatin because she was using the imac. Does anyone know what I need to do to disconnect her from the Imac so her laptop will work better?

I think you or her will have to call Apple, should be free 90 phone support on the new one.

  • AppleCare and Refurbished MacBook Pro Questions!

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a refurbished 2011 13" Core i5 MacBook Pro. I am from Canada, but I will be using my MacBook Pro in New Zealand and Israel. So:
Is AppleCare good for international warranty?
Can AppleCare be bought for a refurbished MacBook Pro?
When can expect to see refurbished MacBook Pro's in the Canada Apple Store?
    Thanks,
    MJNBGA

    1. yes
    2. yes
    3. Speculation about Apple products is inappropriate in these forums. Why not contact the store?

  • RAM / Internal MacBook Pro Question for Media People

    Hey Everyone,
I've always been a huge fan of these forums, but seemed to find myself reading instead of posting. This time, however, I must come to you for guidance.
    I currently have a MacBook Pro 17"
    Memory:  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
Processor:  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
So I'm a multimedia guy, and use everything from Final Cut Pro/Premiere to AE to Photoshop to Indesign. Literally everything. I work at a media branding agency that creates everything media.
My laptop is slowly starting to get slower as the applications become newer and the files become larger. I'm looking for help and suggestions on the next step to help me improve my system. Unfortunately, in my many years of college I never found myself in a class that explained this.
If you were me, and used a WIDE variation of design applications, what would you do to upgrade your MacBook Pro? If you happen to have any links as well, it would be fantastic.
    You're the best,
    Brandon

Moving the discussion to Premiere Pro forum.

  • Late 2013 macbook pro question

Hi there, Im new to the mac laptop world. I received the late 2013 Macbook Retina as a gift and I do some gaming or mixing for a few hours at a time. Now the core temperatures never exceed 76 C (typically 68-72).
Are these volatile temperatures for the CPU?
As well, should I worry about the fans longevity? Or should I let apple care plan take care of that?
    8GB Ram 1600 MHz
2Ghz i7 quadcore Haswell (Iris Pro graphics)
Didnt grab the one with the Nvidia gpu.
To anyone who reads, thanks for your time! I appreciate it.

Are these volatile temperatures for the CPU?
No. These are well within normal operating temperature based on your usage. The thermal limit according to intel is 100 C (212F) for your processor. Additionally, your machine has firmware to automatically shut itself down in the event this temperature is exceeded for an extended period of time.
As well, should I worry about the fans longevity? Or should I let apple care plan take care of that?
The latter. Just use your machine normally. The fans are just serving their purpose, that being cooling your machine to keep the temperatures within stable operating parameters.

  • Just switching from a PC to MacBook Pro - question about Safari display

    Hi,
I am sorry for such a simple question, but if anyone has a moment... we have the new 15 inch laptop, but when accessing a website, the display does not fill up the whole screen. In other words, I can still see quite a bit of the background (wallpaper?) and it just seems to me that it could fill up the screen more than it is. The website doesn't matter - Yahoo, Apple, all the sites are displaying at the same size. Is there a way to adjust this? Thanks.

Grab the title bar and drag the window to the upper left, then grab the bottom right corner of the Safari window and drag it larger.
Alternatively, click the green dot at the upper left - that's a bit different than the Windows 'maximize' in that in Mac OS X, that button enlarges the window in a content-sensitive manner (i.e. makes it large enough to display the full content of the window, within the limit of your monitor). That means that, depending on the web page, the window may fill the screen vertically, horizontally, both, or neither (it will leave space for the Dock, though).
    Hope that helps...

  • Repaired MacBook Pro - Question about User Account being copied

On Wednesday, my MBP was ready to be picked up at the Apple Store. They told me it was basically everything inside that caused my display to not function and it would have cost me over 1700 dollars without AppleCare, so that made me happy. They also said they heard weird noises coming from my hard drive so they gave me a new one as well. Some applications needed to be installed but I was told that all of my documents are on this machine. They copied over my User folder. I didn't really care that I lost my Windows partition but it would have been nice to know before they just deleted it..
Anyway, I got home and turned on my machine. It said I only had about 20 gigs left of storage. Wait a minute... This had to be wrong because thats the space I had on my previous computer WITH the Windows partition. After a little researching, I saw that in my Users folder there was another folder called "DELETED USERS." When I opened it, I saw my documents and music files. I thought it was where they put my old data from my other drive but it wasn't. There was another folder in "Users" with my name and data. It seems like they copied it twice or something. I was just wondering if it's okay to delete this data.

yes, it's quite ok to delete that folder. First make sure that everything was indeed copied to your main user folder and if it is, delete "Deleted Users".

  • Macbook vs Macbook Pro compatability

Issue: Dumped a glass of red wine on my rather new MacBook Pro
Question: What can I salvage out of the Macbook Pro that will work with a new Macbook?
    Specifically:
1 Will the 4gb of ram from the MacBook Pro work in a Macbook?
2 Will the MacBook Pro Harddrive work in the Macbook?
Not sure the Macbook Pro is going to come back from the wine spill so I think I will be forced to purchase a new machine. Macbook Pro is more power than I need so I am thinking about replacing it with the Macbook.. Any suggestions??
    Thank You

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
The RAM should be compatible, however, the MB will only recognize and use 3GB of the 4GB. (There are other threads in the RAM section that talk about this. Many users install 4GB for matched RAM which improves performance a little.)
The HD is compatible. Both the MB and MB Pro use 2.5" SATA drives
    Hope this info helps...

  • Hi guys I am looking to buy a MacBook pro next week,I am wanting to know if I can just connect it straight to my Bt wi-fi network or do I need a airport eztreme as well? Any advice  Thank you

    Any advice cheers

You should be able to run all of your devices through either the BT router or the Airport Express. As Bob says, running both will complicate matters. You will have to make sure to configure them correctly to work together. When your Airport Express arrives, you may want to consider asking in the Airport forum and maybe the iTunes Home Sharing forum. It isn't a MacBook Pro question. I know nothing about AirTunes, but there are many people in those forums who do.
