2.1: problem with Highlights & Shadows

The 2.1 update is amazing. But there seems to be a pretty serious problem with the H&S brick: pushing the Mid Contrast slider too high now results in what looks like solarized blacks. Here's an example: http://homepage.mac.com/leary/Bug/large-1.html
Obviously this is pushed way too high, but the problem is apparent even at lower values and is new to 2.1.
This is from a RAW D40 file but the problem is the same on D80 and D300.
Anyone else seeing this?

Also, with proper use of the recovery and black point sliders, I'd think it would be pretty rare to really crank those "Advanced" values.
There's a creative side to this brick that I find goes beyond simple recovery. I admit to using it less now that we have the definition slider, but it still allows for a certain "look" that I can't get with the other controls. For that, I use the advanced settings a lot and this is a problem that is entirely new to 2.1.
The problem seems to only be dependent on the Mid slider - the amount in the Shadow slider doesn't seem to matter at all. Even at 1.0 on the Shadow slider, pushing Mid C creates this effect.
Obviously going back to Black Point Comp can alleviate the problem, but there's a limit that didn't exist before.
I just noticed that playing with Radius affects it as well. Of course all of this is tied to the black levels in the picture but again, it didn't used to be this way.

Problem with highlighting texts in Adobe Reader X

i've a problem with the highlighting tool, it can only highlight one word at a time, it isn't possible for me to drag and highlight. i've tried updating but to no avail. in addition, i can't use the snapshoot tool either. basically any function that requires a click-and-drag motion is disabled. i'd greatly appreciate it if a kind soul may help me with this issue please!! thank you very much!

PDF files have to be specially enabled for you to save the contents. It appears the old version of these files had this capability, but the new version does not. Without Acrobat you will be unable to save the files. If these are truly government files, you can try going to the government's website and see if you can download a copy that will allow you to save the form field data.

Odd problem with drop shadows

I shot some footage of a guy in front of a green screen. I got an awesome key and I put him in front of a white background. In order to add a more animated look I want to put a drop shadow behind him. The problem I am experiencing is when I add a cross dissolve in between two cuts. When I add the transition the white background flashes grey and then dips back to white. Any ideas?

I've seen this happen before. It's possible it's a "left over" render that's stuck in FCP's brain. Try highlighting the clips, Control + B on them, then Control + B again. sometimes that will delete the render file associated with that portion.
Or you can try relaunching FCP.

Pages, printing: still problem with drop shadows . Frustrated. :

I've spent most of the afternoon trying to get my Pages document to print properly.
I am experiencing the drop-shadow issue :heavy black clump instead of artfully placed& delicate. Printouts do not resemble what is onscreen or in preview etc.
Having read through the forums; the links; the (cruddy) Pages Help and manual; installed new HP offficejet all-in-one software...
I still get the same result.
Most of the threads don't quite fit my situation.
For instance: Several comments have to do with older versions of things. Because I do have Pages 2, I am on Tiger OS X10.4.7 , upgrading is not my problem.
One of the threads had fairly explicit directions to make a new filter in Coloursync which led all the way to a "change resolution" menu but didn't offer advice on what resolution
modification to make. rrrrrrrr..
I am pretty lost at this point and really just want to print out a document that looks like what I have designed.

If printing directly from Pages does not work then it must be an aspect of your printer. Some printers have a black and white setting that might not read shadows (which are more like greyscale) With the doc opened press ⌘ +p and browse through the options of the printer's pulldown menu and see if there are any settings that might be incorrect. (Check, in particular, your 'color sync' and 'print settings' options in the pull down menu.)

Having a strange problem with Drop Shadows in Ai CS5

Hi there Adobe experts!
I have tried eveything... this is my first post here, but it's my only hope. I have a project where I apply drop shadows to linked images to give a sense of depth. A few days ago, the drop shadows just stopped feathering. It doesn't matter what the blur is set to, its just one colour. Transparency still applies. Here's the kicker...I can open files with applied drop shadows to them and they look fine. But if I try to edit that existing shadow, even by 0.0001 of a pt, it will lose its feathering.
I've deleted the AiPrefs file, and played with just about every setting in document raster effects settings. I have no clue what would cause this.
Oh, and whatever the issue is, it starts in my computer, and then attaches to the files... I sent the ai file to a friend, and when he tried to add drop shadows, they screwed up on his machine too. But it isn't the file. I've attached a brand new (and CMYK, just to see if that would make a difference...) file of a sphere showing the problem. Even with the blur super high, the shadow remains flat and monochromatic.
Any geniuses seen this before or have a remote clue how to solve this one?

All my ram is tripple channel DDR3, same clock speeds, but some is 2GB and some is 4GB.
I just pulled the 2GB sticks (which I had in originally) and left in the 4GB sticks (the ones I recently purchased) and the problem goes away. It's quite odd, I've never had a problem like this before with any other application. I know it's not the best thing in the world to have different types of RAM installed, but my motherboard supports it and I've never had a problem doing it before.
I would be interested to see if this problem is reproducable in the OP's senario, or if this problem can be reproduced by others.
Conclusion: the 2GB sticks work on their own, and the 4GB sticks work on their own. I definitly would not call this a hardware problem, it's an adobe problem and they need to fix their software.

Problem with putting shadow on text over another object

I try to give a outer glow effect on text that goes over a white rectangle; in the real case it's an image with a white background. As you can see, the shadow effect does not apply on the parts going over the rectangle. I can't find out which configuration it is that influences this.

I believe the problem here is that the rectangle is filled with the [Paper] swatch. The outer glow you've applied to the text uses the Screen blending mode and will only show against a darker background or no background at all.

Problem With Highlighter

Some help here would be appreciated. Attached it a simple textArea with a highlighter. My problem is that once you add some highlighted text, the highlighter still gets applied to all plain text that follows. I wouldn't have expected this behavior.
If you switch to the commented out textArea.append line in addHighlightedTextButtonActionPerformed it works fine except of course I'm not highlighting all of the text I would like.
Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

Photoshop 3D Problems with displaying shadows and wireframe

Hi there,
I need to create some textures for 3D objects for our semester project in uni and it's quite practical to do that in Photoshop. I'd like to paint on the 2D texture (new window) and check from time to time if everything fits. But I got two problems that make it quite hard:
1. Problem occures when using my Laptop: There are almost no shadows. I tried to play around with the settings, but it doesn't affect the displayed model in any way. It always looks the same way you can see here:
My Laptop is probably not the best system, but it actually fits the minimum system requirements. Nevertheless I think my graphics chip might be not good enough, or what do you think?
Dell Vostro 3350, Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i3-2330MCPU @ 2.20GHz, 8GB RAM (2GB VRAM), Intel HD 3000, 1TB SSHD.
2. Problem: I also tried to work on my Dad's PC, which doesn't have such a good graphics card but is in total much better than my laptop of course:
Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 12 GB RAM, ATI FirePro V3800 (FireGL V) (512MB VRAM).
The Problem that occures when using my Dads PC is: It somehow cannot show me the wireframe of the object (that would work with my laptop -.-). When I go to the menu 3D most of the options are grey and always not clickable. Same for the 3d --> create painting overlay --> wireframe (I need that). I've seen it in a Youtube Tutorial that it actually SHOULD work. I created a new texture for the model, went to "Edit Texture", it opens the texture in 2D in a new window without showing the wireframe (and I also cannot use the function under 3D painting overlay). When I open the texture with my laptop, it immediately shows me the wireframe ...
Those two problems make it almost impossible for me two work on the textures. If I could at least work on one of the two systems ...
So if anyone has an idea how I could solve at least one problem, I'd be really happy. I need to hurry a bit ... those technical problems already cost me a lot of time and I don't want to miss our project's deadline. :S

HT2506 Problem with highlighting - scrambles PDF text after saving

Hi,
I've been having an issue with a PDF which becomes partly scrambled after I edit it (highlighting) and save it. I have tried to find information about this problem but haven't come across anything similar (please redirect me if I am wrong).
The 'scrambled' text is actually a bunch of numbers and symbols.
For ex, the text 'Whether the supervisor is contactable to be able to re-arrange the meeting' now shows up as this:
It seems this is only a display problem as when I select this section and copy paste it elsewhere, it then shows up normallly.
Not all the text is scrambled. It seems to be mainly headings, which all happen to be in bold.
Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

Real problem with highlights

Sorry for posting a new one but I am in real trouble here
On a simple menu with 3 buttons that i built in photoshop CS2 I have a nice simulation with the correct highlights appearing on my buttons when I roll over then if i build the DVD the buttons highlights doesn't appear at all.
My menu images and highlights are 720x480 ntsc wide screen pixels
I used a simple color mode in the menu settings

There may be somthing about your overlays that is incompatible with simple color mode, although it appears to work in simulator.
Is your overlay a simple grayscale layer? You might try the advanced color mode. It's a little more complex, but not unusably so. Remember to set both the selected and active colors.

I Too am having problems with iBooks highlighting the entire chapter if I touch the right edge of a page. It overrides my previous highlighting making my studying useles. It's terribly frustrating! iOS 8 has been a big,big problem. Apple has to fix this. There should be a way to undo it. It's a terrible mess.

The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

Does Premiere CS6 have the same flicker problem when using Shadow and Highlights as CS5?

Honestly, my recommendation would be to use another effect. There's usually more than one way to get the same result, and some ways work better than others.

Problem with Chroma/Lume Keys while using Drop Shadows

I have been using the box now for almost two years and I still am getting problems with green/blue/purples artifacts showing up after a chroma/luma key has been applied with a drop shadow. The artifacts do not show up under a preview but only when the sequence has been rendered. As soon as I take the drop shadow off, the artifacts go away. This is happening with both still graphics with or without Alphas and green/blue screen video. Please help, am I just missing something or is there a work around that I could be using.

Oh, Patrick, buddy, I am so totally torqued out of shape today. Don't get me started. Too late. FCP's insane render handler is dropping my files, seemingly at random. The nests, Motion and LiveType material are not rendering in the correct order which makes the effects all wonky.
I add drop shadows in the last stage and FCP just ain't holding it together. I get glitches. And then I keep getting these Media Offline notices because FCP cant' track the render files that are actually in use in the upstream nests.
I'll certainly admit a likely a user error. I just don't know what it could be. I've somehow told FCP to destroy its children.

Problem with Undo manager using highlighting

Hello,
I am writing a little text editor with syntax highlighting, but I have a problem with the UndoManager.
Everytime I undo an action the UndoManager removes just the attributes of the text, not the text itself.
Does anybody know a way how to make the UndoManager not recognizing the attributes.

In your UndoableEditListener, you can check the type of the edit, and ignore it if it's an attribute change:
