2 Qs: stripping the word "the"; how to label 540 tracks "holiday" (genre)

I have so many tracks that have "a" or "the" as the first word, and this makes it extraordinarily difficult to find them with the scroll-wheel on my iPod (easier on iTunes, of course, but still annoying). The other problem is - how do you mass label tracks? If I want to grab all my holiday music and put "holiday" in the "genre" column, how do I do this?

You can select more than one file at a time in the iTunes library... on a Mac, I believe you can do a shift click for consecutive files and an option click for random files. Then, click File > Get Info. This enables you to edit information for all songs that you currently have selected. You can now change the genre on all of them.
As for the "a" and "the" I can't really think of any tips or tricks, other than removing that word from the file name. Which, doesn't sound like the best option.

Hi,
The quickest way to do this (tested with OS 10.8.2, MS Word 2011) is in one line:
tell application "Microsoft Word" to close every document whose name begins with "book"
The reason why your script doesn't work is that you aren't specifying to Word which document you want it to close.
So, changing one line ought to do it:
close document incrementvalue -- instead of "close document"
But... when you close a document, you change the document count. Document 2 becomes document 1, document 3 becomes document 2 etc. So eventually you'd get a message saying "The object you are trying to access doesn't exist".
Because of this, if you want to do it in a repeat loop, you have to work backwards:
tell application "Microsoft Word"
set doc_count to count documents
repeat with x from doc_count to 1 by -1
if name of document x begins with "book" then close document x
end repeat
end tell

Launch Mail.
Start "New Message".
Click "View" in the menu bar and then "Customize Tool Bar".
Customize Toolbar sheet should drop down.
At bottom left there is "Show" pop up box, click it and select "Icon and Text".
Click "Done".

What's Up With The Word "The"

I installed iTunes 7.1 on my new computer and successfully transferred all my music - what a feat! Anyway, when I went to look for some songs that start with the word "The", they are not where "The" should be, for example, the song, The Best Is Yet To Come, is under B not T, anyone know of anyway to change this? It is interesting to note also that I made 2 playlists and in one playlist "The" is where it should be in one playlist but not another, and my sister has the same version of iTunes and hers does not do this, suggestions anyone?

iTunes ignores "The" at the beginning of the Artist and Album.
It used to be this way only on the Artist name but at some point (7.0?) it was changed to include the Album name.
This is so you do not have 8,000 songs/artist under T.
Besides, Beatles and The Beatles will both be (and should be) in the same place.

According to Mail, in five years I have never used the word "the"

I wish apple would concentrate on making applications that work, like Mail. I'm trying to find a message in which a client gives me Pantone numbers for a brochure. Thank you Mail and Apple for making me waste my time. It can't even find the word 'the'. I know I'm using the stupid find procedure correctly and I've rebuilt, changed file permissions, run Onyx, run Disc Warrior, read the manual and everything else. Apple just makes lousy programs. Eudora worked better.

Here's my problem:
I'm looking at a mailbox I devote to all replies from a particular printer. One of the 100-odd messages in the mailbox says something with the word "the" in it. But if I write the word "the" in the search box top left, select the mailbox name along the top to limit the search to that mailbox and press return, I get no results. Zero. Nada. South of Zot. Zilch. Same for other words in other mailboxes. I can copy a word from a message, and paste it into the find box at top right, and the results are equivalent to the esteem in which I currently hold Apple.

Ive just bought my new mac, updated to the new iTunes version and transfered all of my songs to the iTunes library, but a problem appeared: iTunes is no longer ignoring the word "the" that comes before every band starting with the.
What can i do to put it back the way it was before?

That shouln't be happening. If should start an automatic restore process. You aren't holding down any keys when you click the restore button are you? You shouldn't be.

Check to see if you main hard drive is getting full. Do a repair permissions on your hard drive with the Disk Utility. Check to make sure your username and password are correct for your Youtube account. If those don't work, a $3 solution is to use Veescope Video Converter to convert your Quicktime movie to Youtube. You'll need to share your video to a Quicktime file from iMovie and them drag it into Veescope Video Converter to upload it to Youtube.

Zen Micro frozen with the word the "Creative" stuck on the scr

Yesterday, whil listening to music, my Zen froze up (understand, I just bought this a week ago). So. I tried to shut it off. Nothing. So. I took the battery out. When I put it back in, the word "Creative" stays stuck on my screen. I've tried taking the battery back out, putting it back in. Still the same thing. So. I tried hocking it back up to my computer. It doesn't even acknowledge the device. Nothing is working. What should I do?

Can you try getting the player into Recovery Mode? If it can't do that either, it's possible there is a hardware problem with the player (contact Customer Support for assistance). If you can get into Recovery Mode, try the Clean Up first.

How to label itunes tracks?

I have imported a CD in Itunes
but it did not automatically place any label on it.
How do I place labels for author, genre and track names so that I can then easily find this CD in the library?
Since it did not do it automatically and now I can only find
the CD by looking into the recently added folder.

For Mac read Option-click when you see someone mention right-click.
Select all the songs to start with, use Option-I to "Get info" on the album, enter the album title, artist (if one or two tracks have guests put the album artist here & amend later) album artist, genre, year, no. of tracks etc. then click OK.
Now select the first track, use Option-I to "Get Info", enter the track name & amend the artist details if required. Use the Next & Previous buttons to move between tracks until you've entered all the information.

Why does text on certain portions of websites, usually when adjacent text contains special characters, become jumbled into seemingly random sets of characters that are not in any way jumbled when viewing the source of the webpage? How can I fix this?

When viewing most text on most websites, it displays properly. However, there are two instances where text will either tend to, or consistently, become jumbled into a mess of seemingly random characters. Oddly enough, these seemingly random characters are not, in fact, random. The same weird character will be used to replace the same regular English text character consistently across the entire area that has been jumbled.
The two instances where this tends to occur most often, or consistently in some cases, are, first, when a paragraph or particular section of formatted text contains special characters, such as Chinese or Japanese characters, or accented letters. When this happens, usually the paragraph that contains the special characters is completely jumbled, while the rest of the text on the page will have intermittent jumbling on a word or two. Most often, the word "the" is jumbled in this case.
The second instance where this happens is when a website uses specially formatted text in some form or another. I, not being an expert at web development, am not sure what kind of formatting causes it, but I can provide consistent examples in lieu of my experience:
- Example 1:

Example 1 shows a portion of a screen-shot of the website "Joystiq.com". Every single article title on the front page of this blog is consistently jumbled, while the text of the article itself remains untouched. Please note that when this jumbled text is highlighted, it is visible un-jumbled in the right-click menu as well as in the source code of the page. Other consistent instances can be found within many search fields on various websites. For instance, the search bar located at the top right of "Kotaku.com" consistently displays jumbled characters both on its default text of "Search" and on any text that is typed into the search box itself.
- Example 2:

Example 2 shows both the jumbling of the paragraph containing the character "☆" as well as the subsequent peppering of the rest of the article's text with small jumbled words. Below this is the DOM Source of the selected text which shows how the text itself is being rendered properly within the site's source. Additionally, for convenience, I have edited on to the bottom of the image a small snippet of what the search bar on the same page looks like. Notice how the grayed-out text that normally would read "Search" is instead jumbled.
This issue has been plaguing my browser for the past year or so, and I had hoped that it would go away with subsequent Firefox updates. It has not gone away.

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):

You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page. 
Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

Dear All, please help!
Somehow Escape button started bringing me an autocomplete list in Keynote which is monstrously inconvenient.
I am NOT using tables, I am working with a mere text box. Usually Escape would make me exit the text box, now it offers to insert all the words the Dictionary knows.
It doesn't work this way for Pages, but in the TextEdit it's all the same.

What you are describing is a feature called "word completion", provided by the Cocoa text engine, and hence used by apps which rely on it, including iWork, TextEdit, and others. When you are typing, or the insertion point is in a suitable position, pressing ⎋, or ⌥⎋, or F5 brings up the word completion list. Of course, it only works if there are suitable words in the list. For instance, if you type "Schad", intending to write "Schadenfreude", you can press ⎋ as much as you wish and nothing will come up. But type "Zeit" and then ⎋, and you'll get "Zeitgeist" sure enough.
What is surprising is that you describe it as if you had just came across it, whereas it has been available for years (although I believe that originally it was activated only by ⌥⎋). iWork (including Keynote) is a little different, because, in addition to ⎋, ⌥⎋, and F5, word completion is also activated by ⌘⎋.
I don't know how to turn off this feature, if indeed it can be turned off.

Is there any chance you mis-remember? The Keynote shortcut for exiting text editing and selecting the text box is ⌘↩ (command-return).

Is the newer (the one that comes standard with bb bold 9790) operating system available to all BB bold 9700?

I've had a replacement BB Bold 9700 for a while now and only just found this forum, anyway at the moment it has the standard 9700 software (the one where it is just the five icons at the bottom of the home screen, and then you can press the bb logo and you get a dark screen with all the icons accessable on) but loads of my friends who have the BB 9700 have the newer software (I think that's the word, the one where it has the icons at the bottom but you can scroll through them sideways with things like frequent, media, etc and then you can expand each one of them upwards) but I haven't been able to figure out anyway for me to get mine to update to that. I have searched everything I can, I have the desktop software and everything but it says there are no updates available for my phone, adn when I go on the internet on my bb looking for updates to the system it still finds nothing... any ideas/is it just not possible to update on some BB 9700s? Ok, I did the thing where you can then choose your service provider and then it gives you a lit of the software, I chose to download the 6 one and it saves ine adn then does its instally thing (but not ure what exactly it is trying to install and to what) and then it's like restart your computer now for changes to take effect, so I restarted and thought then when I loaded the desktop software it mght finally update it but no, made absolutely no change, what am I doing wrong/how do I make it work? I know now for sure it's definitely available!!!

My 160gb iPod Classic has started placing "The" in the "T" section.

Just recently my iPod Classic started organizing all my albums beginning with the word "The" into the "T" section. This is something new. Not sure how this changed, but is there a setting I can change to fix this? It's quite annoying.

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod classic is only playing sound in mono when using multiple headphones.
Since you've likely isolated this behavior to the iPod by trying multiple headphones, see this advice from the "The headphones don't work" section of the iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ:
If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try resetting it. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.

How can I get Tracker to find a shared review PDF initiated in another domain?

I initiated a shared review for a PDF and stored it on a network server in domain X. Subseqauently, the server was moved into a different domain, call it Y.
Now, Acrobat Tracker can't find the PDF ... and reviewers can no longer access the PDF.
How can I get Tracker to find the PDF in the new domain Y?

No, this is not possible. You need to initiate the review again. This is because the review server information is embedded inside the PDF and when you change the review server, the JavaScript embedded in PDF still refers to the old server. So Tracker is unable to locate the review PDF.
If the old review has comments by other reviewers, you can save it as an archive and initiate review on new server on this new PDF. This way all the review comments can be retained in the PDF but they will be published "on behalf of" the initiator now.
