2 times negative experience with Creative Labs mp3 play

Hey,?I wanted to share my negati've experiences with you on two different Creative Labs mp3 players that I happened to own and suffer from. Before you jump to any fast conclusions or start drawing any parallels note that I loved the sound quality of both 5Gb Zen Micro and 30Gb Zen Vision:M and that I purchased both of them in Ukraine. 5Gb Zen Micro, my first player, was fine until I accidentally dropped it'sfrom about m above the floor. The player was fine and still able to play the music but... the screen was gone. The screen would only light up a few seconds after booting and then go dark and leave you in dark to guess your way through the menu. The sensitivity of the touch pad was way too high even at the lowest level and I often made mistakes with it. But sadly enough there is no support whatsoever in Ukraine. Email support was useless as you can't really have any software solution to the corrupted screen. I had to forget it :-(. Next, I got excited about the 30Gb Zen Vision:M. I was happy to buy a good alternati've to an Ipod but my joy was premature. After very little use of my Zen Vision I once left it unused for about a month. The next thing I noticed was that my battery is dead. The battery would not charge no matter how long I tried to do it! Not even several months passed since I purchased it when the Li-Ion battery went dead. Once again there was no customer support center to go to to fix it and there was no way to return it to the shop either. I had to replace the battery somehow. I am sure many of you saw detailed step-by-step instructions on how to disassemble the Zen Vision and get access to the battery. I bought a replacement battery on Ebay and had the original one replaced only to find out the replacement battery was dead at opening!!! I next ordered another battery on Ebay with a one-year warranty but yet again the battery would not charge. At first it would not charge and then after about 5 hours of charging it would show 00% charge but the player would shut off immediately once I disconnected the AC adapter. I gave up trying to do it myself and there is no local customer service center here. I would send it to the US for repairs but Creative has hidden all service center addresses and puts you through a very long and tedious way of reporting problems with your Zen player. I am very frustrated indeed! I don't wanna buy another Creative player and face the same problems and terrible customer service. I hope someone from Creative Labs will read this and advise the company on how to improve. Creative is losing the battle to Apple believe it or not. Apple is making tons of money on its players with poorer audio quality and fewer features because their customer service is superior. Creative is losing money quarter after quarter because their battery suppliers are not producing consistent-quality batteries, customer service support is non-existent in many countries outside the US and because many popular Creative players come with a user-unfriendly built-in battery!!!

Thanks for your comments. I am in no way shying away from my responsibility in the case of dropping my first Zen. Such things do happen as you know. The point I was trying to make was that there is NO Creative service center over here, neither in Russia or any neighboring country I could go to.
Yes, Apple does have many service centers in Ukraine. So what do you do with the product that you can't repair? It wasn't completely shattered and a replacement of the screen or maybe some chip would fix it.
As for the battery I have to disagree. For a Li-Ion battery one month shouldn't be a problem. Someone asked who makes the batteries for Creative Labs. It's the company called SKC. http://www.skc.co.kr/skhp/en/prod/bat/03.jsp
Once again, maybe changing the battery yourself isn't the best idea but I simply have no other option and you simply don't want to throw away $360.
I still think that Creative should have done a better job selecting the battery supplier and especially setting up service centers locally. A lot of people over here buy Creative Zens and face similar problems. We have nowhere to go for service. I would rather send it in for repairs but Creative does superb job of hiding its technical support email forcing you to go through a web form.

I don't know how much longer they are going to stay in business. I don't like Ipods and all that hype about them but I'd prefer to have better choices and responsi'veness from Creative.

Creative Labs MP3 product reliability

Since September of 2007 I have purchased three Creative Labs MP3 players. I bought a Zen V Plus, a Zen Micro, and a Zen Mozaic.
The Zen V Plus and the Zen Micro have both stopped working.
The customer support line tells me that repair of these products will be as expensi've as buying a new MP3 player.
With this level of reliabilty, why would I want to buy another Creative Labs MP3 player? It would seem much less expensi've to simply buy another brand of MP3 player, and save my money for buying music downloads.

I do still have the Micro. I even know how to fix it. All I'd have to do is reformat the unit. Unfortunately, to reformat the unit you need to be able to see more that just random lines on the screen; you actually need to be able to read the screen so that you can scroll down to where you can reformat the unit.
So, while I realize that all electronics can have issues, I'm certainly not satisfied with having 2 out of 3 units go belly up, and know that my option is to buy another unit from the same company.
That is simply too expensi've a path to continue.
On the bright side, my daughter is willing to give me her fi've year old IPod, which still works just as advertised.

Any experience with media players to play HD content created in FCP

I have an HD video that was shot and edited in FCP, it will be projected using HD projector via HDMI.
i am looking for a media player that is able to play HD content as I am not so pleased with the low bit-rate of DVD's and cant burn blu-ray yet.
i don't want to compromise the high quality that i've worked so hard to achieve when i compress to dvd...
any experience with the various media players that are in the market ? last time i've checked "tvix" can play h264 content but cant play uncompressed...
suggestions ?

Considering Lenovo For First Time, Others Experience with K410 and K330B

Hi everyone I am shopping for a new desktop. My 7 year old Dell Dimension 4700 died and am now shopping. I am looking to spend around $300 which I know is a pretty basic machine but for my needs(web surfing,quicken, word processing,low graphic games,burning dvds,listening to cds) that should be fine.
I like the flexibility that my Dell had with both DVD burner and CD rom drives and have wanted to have a second hard drive on whatever I end up with so I can separate the OS from the data.
From my researching it seems that my best options are either a refurb Ideacenre K410 or K330B which I've seen on the Lenovo outlet website listed for $281 and $287 respectively ) I don't hink Dell is what it used to be and the Hp's at this price seem to be very basic in terms of the MB used.
Otherwise I'm considering building my own as I have a brand new 400w ps, a barely used ATA drive(which I know would need an adapter),a still functioning SATA HD,a functional DVD burner and CDROM.Would need to buy mb,cpu,case, fan and basic sound card. But with a copy of windows 7 it is easily at least at $300 so it makes wonder if one of the above Lenovos is a better option.
I have read different things about Lenovo support and reliability so I'm not sure what to think.
So my questions are what are others experiences with these 2 desktops and also how reliable has your Lenovo been.Also others experience with refurbs would be helpful.

Re the data partition you mention, Lenovo tried that with the ideaPad with somewhat mixed results on their first effort. Perhaps an improved version will be available in the future.

Computer Crashes with Creative Labs Sound Blaster 5.1 Live Card

Several weeks ago when I booted up my computer a msg apeared saying new device found(the sound blaster card mentioned in the title) even tough it had worked for months beofre then and even the night b4. Shortly after I get a beep from the mother board and the computer crashes several seconds after start up.
I thought maybe their could be some conflicting driver issues or something so I checked the BIOS and it said the onboard sound was disabled. Restarting the computer several times it kept crashing. I removed the card, booted up the computer and everything worked fine (except the sound) and it did not crash. I tried putting the card in the other PCI slots thinking that was the problem but it crashed each time.
Right now the card it ploped on the desk and I have the Creative 5. speakers running off the onboard card on my Is7-E mobo but the sound is **bleep**ty as hell and the speakers are ligned up corectly and I am having all sorts of trouble with that. I am getting basic sound though. I havnt had time to pursue the matter untill now. Do you guys think the card for some reason is damaged or Its an issue on my computer Crashing it's

Heh, srry about using the S word. Ah, I whiped all the audio drivers etc...from the guid in that link. I poped the card in, booted up the computer...alas it still crashed. So now I have to get my temp sound working again. Is their anyway to tell if a compenent is phsicly dmged? I can not be shure if this is a software issue(which I dont think it is because I followed your whipe guid) or a hardware issue. I dont understand what could of hapened to it, it simply stoped working. Im not shure why my computer crashes at start up as mentioned above and doent simply not work. Any more thoughts would be great.

Where is the driver for the Zen Creative 4GB mp3 play

When I installed everything on the CD and plugged the mp3 player into my Vista computer it said 'looking for driver' and never found it. I have not been able to find the driver for this type of player anywhere.
It worked fine on my brothers computer, which also has Vista. He got his computer after mine, and has Athlon processor as opposed to my Inter Core 2 Duo. Can't see why that would make a difference.

I think Creative should add the Sleek Photo to the player list in downloads and add the latest version there (I have version .0.0e). I ordered my player in December (for Christmas). There are a few issues that I have addressed in my "A few annoyances with Zen Sleek Photo 20GB (Request)" thread.
Sadly there has not yet been an update to fix the artist listings etc. as mentioned in my thread
I got in contact with another Creative Zen Sleek Photo user who also li'ves in Switzerland and has the same problems (tracks not been sorted correctly even with correct ID3 tags, which work in many many Windows applications).
By the way, sadly the Sleek Photo gets a load of dust under the screen too, unless you are very careful. I have been unable to remove most of the dust even using compressed air! I would rather not have to get it replaced because of this (unless Creative makes a slightly new casing model to prevent dust under screen) as I would probably end up paying rather a lot for postage (it's going indirectly through another company)
I hope there shall soon be a firmware update addressing these things,

Using a 4.5/6V Adapter with a 5V MP3 Play

I've searched for MONTHS for an combination FM transmitter/car power adapter for my Jukebox Zen Xtra, I and finally found one in the the Arkon SoundFeeder SF00.
I ordered it online, and when it arri'ved, I discovered that it only has output setting options of 4.5V or 6V. But the Zen Xtra supports only 5V. Can I use either the 4.5 or 6V without frying or harming the mp3 player, or neither? Is there any type of adapter I can buy might "lower" the voltage if I try the 6V option?
I really want to be able to power/charge the Zen Xtra as well as power the FM transmitter at the same time. I've bought regular battery-powered FM transmitters before; and while no FM transmitter works superbly, I really like the freedom they give you to listen to your own music on long car tri

While I realize that iPOds have the vast majority of the marketshare, I'm baffled why why more manufacturers don't make dual adapters/transmitters for other mp3 players and devices so that the average person doesn't go through batteries like water.

Imporant to note it's not just the voltage that's important, it's also the rated current. The Xtra needs a minimum of .5A. If the current isn't rated this high it can cause the voltage to go way off what it should be and damage the player.
Also note that there are 3rd party adapters and 3rd party adapters. Some are good, some are not so good, and have been known to seriously damage players.
If this adapter is rated to .5A or more, then try the 4.5V setting first. The voltage tolerance on some of the players at least is quite small.

Sound not working if memory above 4 GB in win 7 64b with Creative SB X-Fi?

I have a HP Pavilion D4760.SE PC with Creative Labs SoundBlaster X-Fi . I have Logitec X530/5.1 speakers connected.
To increase performance I added 4 Gb memory (up to 6 Gb) and reinstalled from 32 b win 7 to 64 b win 7. Everything has gone OK except for the sound.
I installed Creative SB driver 6.0.1.1375 from 2010-05-05. I have sound but it is heavily distorted. I also tried driver 6.0.230.4 from 2014-02-28 but with no sound at all.
I reduced the memory at start-up to 3990 (anything less than 1024 * 4) as a hint from a Microsoft support page and with that the sound is OK.
But I would like to use all memory so my questions is:
1. Is there any driver available to get SB to work with full memory?
2. Is SB X-FI not compatible with memory above 4 GB? Which sound card shall I then upgrade to (working with main memory of 6-8 GB)? I only use the speakers for Music (spotify & iTunes) and some video and TV, no games.

Windows Upgrade Advisor says Creative X-Fi is compatible with Windows 7 64b.
I have tried the Vista 64 b driver from HP from 2007 but the installation is not fullfilled (Computer does not have the requirements for this with error code 9998). Installation is terminated.
I have placed a mp3 music file on desktop and started it with Windows media Player and iTunes. If I use RAM below 4 GB it is working fine, if I use RAM over 4 GB sound is heavily scrambled/distored. If I use a later driver from 2014 no sound at all.
I include my latest conversation with Creative Support. If no solution is to find do you think the newer sound card they propose will work?

Based on the information you provided, the Sound Card that you have is an OEM product which means that support is handled by the PC manufacturer. Kindly check there support page if there is any driver available for the card.

The 2_30_004 driver you gave a link to is not working with X Fi. I tried
once more. And if I run a Creative Auto Update the recommendation is to
use it but in the comment it is written that it should not be used for X
Fi. The result is the same, no sound, and if I use Spotify I even get a
message that the sound card is not working.
My conclusion is that my sound card is not compatible with windows 7 64
b with memory above 4 GB.
Have you any proposals what I shall change to?

What's up with Creative tech support???

I sent them an email detailing my problem. I started with the problem that my Zen V plus was in recovery mode and nothing was working (reboot, reset button) went to web site and used the recovery tool located there. Did not change anything, it'sdid not work, tried it again and then got the message on my MP3 that there was a firmware problem. My PC now doesn't regognize the MP3 player. The reply I got back from Creative tech support was try the reboot option from the recovery menu.
What part of - I tried it and it didn't work and now the only thing on the screen is "firmware problem" don't they understand.
Why don't they have a li've chat for tech support. I'm wondering why I bought a Creative lab MP3 player

I did get back to them with exact details of what I did. What I tried per the suggestions on the web site for trouble shooting the problem. They responded back with the EXACT SAME LIST I told them I already tried.
I was in recovery mode
tried the reboot option - nothing
tried the clean up option - nothing
tried the recovery tool from web site - nothing
tried to reload OS and now the PC doesn't reconize the MP3 player
tried all the options suggeted for getting PC to recognize MP3 player as web site suggests and NOTHING WORKS
explained that to tech support and I get instructions for things I ALREADY TRIED.
Again, why is there no li've chat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Communication Issues with Creative Webmaster

Does anyone have an issue with trying to get a warrenty issue resolved with the Creative support staff? I bought a Creative MP3 last week and the cable was bad. I tried to bring this up to the Creative support staff and there webmaster, Galkowska Agata Ewa, keeps telling me that the warrenty has expired, even though I have proof I just bought the thing last week. I've had three generations of Creative Zen MP3s and this is my first experience with Creative customer service and I'm not impressed. I know I can buy another cable, but it seems that the Creative folks should be true to there policy.

Ok this is a straight forward RANT! In building my new computer I decided to let Creative be my folks for sound since I've always been impressed with the EAX and surround sound, the first time I played EQ in 4. 3D sound on a first gen SBLi've card I was in awe. I've bought so many speakers and sound cards since and been happy. So I decide with my new computer I will buy the XFI Fatality, Progamer headphones with mic, and the Gigaworks s750 7. speakers. Well I got the headphones and the sound card first, right off the headphones left side sounded blown out to me, so I sent them back, and the new pair worked fine. The XFI card became the issue next I had the cracking and popping noises, I made a few tweaks and was able to kill most of it, but I have 4 gigs of Ram and when I turn on the memory hole in the bios so that XP Pro 64 can see the 4 gigs brings back the popping noises. So I have to turn of 2 gigs of ram that cost me over $300 so I don't have nasty noise when I play games. Oh yea and I sent the card back as well in hopes I'd get a repaired one.... No Such Luck... So then I get to my speakers, the left rear channel is making a sound like a blown speaker so I swap the plug with another channel and its fine and the other speaker in that channel makes the noise, so I send back the sub as a RMA at a cost of $30 to me (not like giving them $800+ for broken stuff isn't bad enough... nothing like salt on the wound.) So after 2 weeks of no sound other than headphones for my gaming, I get my sub back, I hook it up and.... Now the left rear channel is totally DEAD. So now I'm PISSED, I call up and hold it together when talking to the RMA folks. They offer to send me a whole new set of speakers, so I'm thinking cool, maybe its in a cable or the box or something.... Today I get home from work and see the box, I'm like sweet new stuff and spend a good hour carefully rewiring my whole desk with the new speakers and cables. Get it all hooked up and click on the sound test for the 7. and........ The Side Left Channel is DEAD WTF!!!!!!

All I can say is it sucks there is no real competition for sound against Creative, because they know their product will be the demand and if they put out a poorly manufactured item they can get away with only so many people will even bother RMAing and will just li've with it thinking they did something wrong. I am truly disturbed by this trend and can only hope that after I actually get everything working in 6 months or so if they ever fix the noise issue with XFI and maybe a few more RMAs of my sub to get one they TEST before sending it to me... I hate to say it but I think next comp I build I'm going to have to start looking at other sound companies. Its sad to lose faith in a company you hold in such high regards for so long as pioneers. Thanks for reading, oh and CL support persons that like to pop into a message and post an idea that most anyone with an IQ over 3 would have tried in the first 5 minutes of troubleshooting only to never revist the thread because your goal is the create the illusion of support on the boards by making a certain number of posts regardless for image sake, don't bother responding since due to my past experience with your phone support I know more about your products than most of you... Oh and your database of issues/fixes doesn't count as knowledge its the results of your customers helping each other with issues and you all pool the fixes they come up with confirm them, and post them as?fixes. I wont rule out a couple of them your crack teams might stumble across like the first guy that discovered that touching electrical wires is bad and put shielding on them, well maybe the guy that found him did it.... Rant off =)

I do not see any reason for you to attack the moderators. As we have already stated (and is detailed in the announcement at the top of each board), we are here to make sure the board stays running and people do not post inappropriate content (and abide by the rules), we are not here to provide support. We may post sometimes with advice people could try, but we not trying to create any illusion that support is offered on this board, as it isn't. That is what Customer Support is for.

Recording/playing back with Creative Media Sou

I have a C00 Mp3 player which came bundled with some creative software, including a software Mp3 player and recorder for windows.
I have tried recording via the sound output of the sound card, and at 28kbps it does fine. But when I record at 40kbps (for example a radio talk show), then try to play it back, it plays back at many times the correct speed.
When I open the 40kbps file that I recorded with this Creative software, using Winamp, it plays fine. The creative software mp3 player can open and play other 40kbps files I've recorded (using Audacity) with no problems.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I haven't played it back on the C00 - I mean it plays back too fast on the windows software they include (but fine on Winamp).
Any ideas?

Unless the Digital 5500 speaker set has analog inputs it can't be used with the DDTS-100. You must connect the DDTS-100 to a speaker system through the analog outputs either from the main unit or the switchbox. I have not heard of any cables to convert analog audio into digital form so digital speakers can understand and play it.
The best speaker system? I have absolutely no idea dude. You must be the judge of that, if it is you who are going to listen to it. I like my S750 system but that is me. You have to read loads of info and reviews and preferably listen to them in a store if you can.

Time Machine "restore" experiences with Logic 8 .... anyone?

Purely ... in anticipation ....
Has anyone had an "at the coalface" experience of re-building their Logic set-up (& OSX etc)from a Time Machine back up? It hasn't actually happened to me yet but in the middle of a large project recently there was a moment when I thought I was going to find out... thankfully the crisis was averted!
I'm sure many users here are in similar boats - ie. I have VSL / PLAY / Kontakt 3 / Melodyne etc etc. So there are a long and boring list of installation & authorisation procedures to navigate if ever there were the need to start from scratch in the event of a major crash scenario.
I wonder if I am being naive in assuming that Time Machine is the reliable one stop shop back up that it's supposed to be?(ie. in my case backing up - my main HD - audio drive - sample drive - project drive) In a "crisis" (and assuming any hardware problems are fixed or replaced) does Time Machine put everything back in it's rightful functioning place with one simple "restore"?
Anyone had any real world Time Machine experience? ..... or handy hints?
Is there anything further we should be doing?

TimeMachine has saved my arse twice now.
First time I had a project that all of a sudden would not open up in Logic.
I restored the project from one that was a couple of hours old in TimeMachine and all was good.
Second time I had a catastrophic hard drive failure on my main audio drive (an external FW800 500GB maxtor). Drive was totally unrecoverable. Replaced it with a new Lacie drive and renamed it to match my old audio drive. TimeMachine saw it and automagically restored everything from my old audio drive.
However!! I still have one major gripe with TimeMachine: my backup drive (1TB Lacie) is full and TimeMachine only allows you to backup to one drive which is a serious limitation! If anyone knows of a way to span backups over multiple drives I'd very much appreciate it. Because of this I don't consider TimeMachine to be a serious backup solution for professional use.
