2008 R2 Terminal Server large Local User Profile Folder; C:\ drive size fluctuation

Hey Guys,
Have an interesting issue I'm currently working with and starting to scratch my head.  I inherited this server so many things I'm still discovering.
This is TS 2008 R2 SP1, with very basic setup; Microsoft, Firefox, IE, and Adobe. I currently have many users, but only these two user profiles that have large folders. (all the space is taking out by C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Local\Microsoft). Each folder orbiting
around 23.6GB taking 89% of the C:\ drive. Once I discovered it, I applied folder redirection policy to move all the content of the user folder's to the large drive; P:\TSProfiles\ottc01
However, the actual C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder still there and looks like it cannot be moved. It's almost like every instance of windows OS and Microsoft Office duplicated and resides on each user's local profile. Plus, the C:\ drive
space fluctuates and goes up and down, every time user logs on and off.
So, I'm curious is to how to correct this issue and why only these two users have such a large profiles? I can provide more info if needed, just let me know.
Thanks everyone for their time.

Hi,
On current situation, please refer to following articles and check if can help you.

In addition, this issue seems to be more related to terminal service. I also suggest that you would post this question in
Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) Forum. I believe we will get a better assistance there.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server and Outlook 2013 Profile

Really hoping someone can offer some advice on this one as I have wasted far to many cycles trying to figure this out.
Company I work for recent purchased another company and we are in the process of bringing them into our network.  They currently run a a 2008 R2 terminal server where all users connect to for there day to day work.  A number of applications
    are installed including Office 2013.
All users have Outlook 2013 configured to access their exchange server for email and this works fine.
The first step in bringing them into our fold is to add an email account for Our Exchange  server without removing their existing exchange configuration or Outlook Profile.  So the one profile will have both exchange accounts listed and they can
continue to get email from their server but as well email from our domain.
I created a MSP file and tested pushing this out using PDQ Deploy to a few workstations here in our office and it works fine.  I then started to work on deploying in their environment.  PDQ Deploy will not work as they are all terminal Services
Clients.  So I tried to push out via GPO.  I created the GPO Initially wanting to use a package and apply that GPO to an AD group.  However it will not let me deploy a MST as a package.  So I then tried moving it to a script that would
run at logon.  That too is not working.
I know I could enter install mode then run the MSIEXEC.EXE \config.MSP but that takes away the ability to control the role out.
Any other ideas on how to get this done.

    Hi,
Your issue seems to be out of the scope of this forum. We only focus on issue about RDS/VDI deployment, management and operations. For Oultook related issue you can ask to our MS Office Forum:

  • Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server.

    Hi,
I was wondering about running Adobe Acrobat Std X (10) on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server for two users. Anyone else that have any experience with this? Best solution?
    Best regards
    Vegard

Although Server 2008 R2 is a supported install platform, you'll have to be extremely careful about licensing - Acrobat is not a server product, so the only person who would be legally permitted to connect to it would be the one who owns the copy of Acrobat in question. Sharing a copy between multiple users is not an option; for that there are dedicated server-based solutions such as LiveCycle.

  • Time Zone Redirect Doesn't work on Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server

    Hello All,
A client has two Windows 2003 and two Win 2008 R2 Terminal servers.
When users from a different time zone login to the Win 2003 server, the time zone of the server changes to reflect their own time zone. However when they login to the Win 2008 R2 servers, the time zone on the server doesn’t change.
I already enabled the "Allow time zone redirection" on both Win 2008 R2 Terminal Servers in :
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Device and Resource Redirection
Yet when the clients login to the 2008 server and checks the time on the server, it still shows local/server time and not their own time zone.
    Any input will be appreciated.

  • Word 2010 - "Connecting to printer" message when opening documents at Server 2008 R2 Terminal server

Our users experience sometimes the message "connecting to printer" while they open a document in Word 2010 (32-bit) on our Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server. This is behavior
isn't consequent but random. The default printer in this environment is a Net2Printer-printerdriver (1.16) which redirects the print jobs (in PDF-format) to the local client's default printer. This feature works well. We don't want to change the default printer
because this is the right one to use by our users.
After a long seeking trip on the internet I've found the Microsoft hotfix KB974991 which can fix this issue for Word 2007. My question is, is this also usable for Word
2010 (32-bit) and if not, is there maybe another fix for the 2010 version available?
Any other suggestions or workarounds are welcome!

    Hi,
Please change following options test if it works:
    Ÿ
    Print proofs quickly
Enable the Draft output option. When you use this option, the document prints with minimal formatting. Therefore, the document
may print faster. This option is ideal for printing proofs.
To enable the Draft output option, follow these steps.
Note Some printers may not support this option.
    Start Word.
    Click File, and then click
    Word Options.
In the Word Options dialog box, click Advanced, and then scroll down to the Printing
    section.
Click to select the Use draft quality check box, and then click OK.
    Ÿ
Use the background printing option that best fits your requirements
When background printing is enabled, you can continue to work in Word while your document prints in the background. Background printing uses additional
memory, and your document may print more slowly.
When background printing is disabled, your document prints faster. However you cannot work in Word until the print job is completed. If you do not have
to continue to work in Word while your document prints, disable background printing to speed up printing.
To do this, follow these steps:
    Start Word.
    Click File, and then click
    Word Options.
In the Word Options dialog box, click Advanced, and then scroll down to the Printing
    section.
Click to clear the Print in background check box, and then click OK.
    Best regards

  • Deleting local user profile on RDS without reboot

I need to delete the local profile for a user on our RDS server, because of a problem with this user.
Since the user was using RDS a few days ago, and RDS wasn’t rebooted since, I can’t delete the local profile. When I go to advanced system settings—user
profiles. The ‘delete’ option is greyed out.
I know that I can reboot the server then will be able to delete it, but since this server is serving many users, it means they all have to stop using it.
Is there a way to delete this user’s profile without rebooting the server?
    I use sever 2008 R2.
    Thanks

    Hi,
A local user profile is created the first time a user logs on to a computer. The profile is stored on the computer's local hard disk. Changes made to the local user
profile are specific to the user and to the computer on which the changes are made.
Windows security requires a user profile for each user account on a computer. The system automatically creates a local user profile for each user when the user logs
on to the computer for the first time. The system automatically maintains the settings for each user's work environment in a user profile on the local computer.
Windows Vista and later: User profiles are managed through the
User Accounts control (UAC) panel item.
    You can open the
Control Panel and click User Accounts, then click the Change User Account Control setting, dropped to the lowest turn off UAC. Press OK.
Then you can use administrator account try again to see whether you can delete the local user profile or not.

  • Windows Search Service failing to install on Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server

    Hi,
I am unable to install the Windows Search Service on a Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server. I want to install this to enable indexing options within Outlook 2013 for all users.
Server Manager > Add Roles > File Services > Select only Windows Search Service > Install.
The error I receive: "Attempt to configure Windows Search Service failed with error code 0x80070057. The parameter is incorrect."
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I did the test and could install the Windows Search Service without problem.
Which role did you installed on the terminal server?
Did you try to install it on another windows server?

  • No Default Mail Client Error with Outlook 2010, Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server, and TAM

We are running a software package on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server called TAM (The Agency Manager) along with Outlook 2010.  The application uses a MAPI connection to retrieve mail data from Outlook to be able to send and receive messages inside
the application.  On our individual PC's this works just fine, but on the Terminal Server users we get the message "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.  Please run Microsoft Outlook
and set it as the default mail client."
I've tried the steps listed in KB 813745 which tells you to delete the registry keys and run a repair in Office, but that didn't resolve the issue.  I've searched on this issue, but haven't found anything useful.  Any suggestions would be much
    appreciated.

Try to set DEP and add outlook.exe. I had outlook 2007 same problem. With DEP enabled and outlook, word en excel also added to the list it worked again.
You can find it under this computer, properties, then change settings. Click advanced tab and then select the first "settings" option. The click the "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP) and select the last option and add the office programs
    there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks

    Hello,
    I'm implementing Server 2012 RDS session-based.
Can I increase the limit of User Profile Disk after it is initially set?
Is it ok that my Admin user has a User Profile Disk i.e. no local profile on the server as they did previously.
Are PSTs supported on User Profile Disks - previously PSTs were unsupported on network share - User Profile Disks are on network share.
I had an issue where a UPD was created for a user - I then delete the UPD. I then logged in as the user (a domain admin) and expected a local profile to be created - this didn't happen. A temporary profile was created instead. This was unexpected.

    Hi Gary,
You can try to change the size of User Profile Disk by mounting .Vhdx file. Please refer below thread for information.
    Resize User Profile Disks
As per my research, i can suggest you to use admin local user profile on server. You can get more information for UPD on below listed article.
    1.  Easier User Data Management with User Profile Disks in Windows Server 2012
    2.  Using User Profile Disks (UPD) in combination with predefining the Modern UI Start Screen on RDS 2012 (appsfolder.itemdata-ms)
    Hope it helps!

  • How to add Windows 2012 R2 RDS to Existing Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server

I currently have a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server running and I am looking to add a Windows Server 2012 R2 server to it. All I see when I google the setup is only for Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS, cant find anything to integrate with a current 2008 R2 Terminal
    Server.
Can anyone help with this or point me to a blog I possibly missed?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment.
Yeah, agree with diramoh; as already commented. If you want user session from RDS Server 2012 R2 then you need to  install RDS License role on server 2012 R2, purchase and install RDS CAL (per user or per device) according your requirement and then you
can use user session for server 2012 R2 and also for lower version.
But as you already have Server 2008 R2 RDS CAL, then with that you can simply access lower version but can’t manage Server 2012\R2.
For more information, you can refer following document.

  • Deletion of Local User Profiles

    Hi,
I need to delete Windows 7 local user profiles and have the following requirements:
    1. Only to perform the deletion once
    2. Leave system (defautl, administrator and public) profiles in place
    3. Not to attempt the deletion when a user is logged on
I initially thought of a script linked to a computer start up gpo, but was wondering whether SCCM 2012 could do this and if so, whether someone could give me a few pointers?
    Thx
    IT Support/Everything

you should be able to delete user profiles provided that the local system account (the account that executes the script) do have the required permission.

    Hi,
You have to check group polices if browsing is enabled.

  • Instant Search not working on local mailbox in Outlook 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server

Sometime last week Instant Search stopped working on a Terminal Server we have deployed. I don't use Outlook on the server so I didn't notice it myself but users started complaining several days ago. When I checked instant search settings everything was
grayed out. I noticed that the feature for Windows Search was disabled so I enabled that feature rebooted the server and now instant search is looking for email in archive folders and sharepoint lists. Local Mailbox mail however is not being indexed by instant
search. When I check data files it says that there is no file for the local mailbox. I checked and Cached Exchange Mode is disabled so no OST is being created and apparently there is no PST for it either.
Do I need an OST/PST to search the local mailbox?
Also I have added the Office GPO Templates and enabled the GPO for allowing Cached Exchange Mode but that doesn't seem to be helping either. Please help.

Have you had any luck with this?
One of our clients has reported that 5 different users, when RDP'd into 3 different RDS Servers, cannot use the Instant Search.
I haven't been able to find anything about this in my online searches.
Like you, the mailboxes aren't even appearing under Instant Search > Search Options.  Also, it would appear that there are no locally-hosted .ost/.pst's for any of the users on this server; can the instant search function work on a .pst that's saved
    somewhere else on the network?

  • 2008 SR2 Terminal Server

We are currently converting from Quark 8.5 to In-Design CS5.5 volume license,. We have terminal servers a farm of 10. I installed In-Design CS5.5 on one of our terminal servers as a testing base. Had about 4 users remote into the terminal server, and launch In-Design CS5.5, they all started to compliant after a ten minute delay on startup that the application was taking extremely slow, in looking at the CPU it was at 100%, this is running 8GB of RAM, once In-Design CS5.5 was launched the CPU was at a normal rate, then had two additional user launch In-Design CS5.5 and again the CPU got to 100% to the point where all other 4 users went to a craw for about 8-10min till the 2 other users got In-Design CS5.5 up and running.
I have read that giving full privileges to:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe   2. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
    Gave users local admin privilages
and that did not help, I have spent countless hours trying to figure out why In-Design CS5.5 goes to a craw at start up, no matter how may plug ins I remove it sticks to 100%. I also did a registry key to disable to CSLive and no help.
I was hoping that someone out there has a similar environment as we do and could shed some advice:
    Terminal server specs are:
    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
    Processor 2.40Ghz (2 processors)
    Ram-8gb
    Systems Type 64bit OS

Creating an user account on the computer doesn't create a profile for that user. The profile is created the first time the user interactively logs on at the computer. After the user logs onto the computer for the first time, the user's local profile
will be created in a folder with the name of the user under the systemroot/Users folder.
