2011 13 in MBP i5 & i7 overheating, feedback welcomed!

So I recently purchased a 13 in i5. I can't believe how hot this thing gets. Fans take off instantly when I run PLEX, with no movies running. Mail, Calendar and Safari open, the temps run about 80C. Is this normal? What can I do?
Others having this issue. I would love to hear feedback or similar situations with possible solutions.

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13' as well, and I haven't experienced any problems until today.
I've never experienced the computer getting surprisingly hot, but it did turn of twice without no reason. I was working in Pages both of the times, and it just turned itself off and wouldn't turn on in a minute or so. It's working perfectly fine when until it suddenly turned off.
I've read about heat-problems and I am currently downloading 10.6.7, is this gonna be fixed by software or should I turn my computer in?

  • How much memory can use my early 2011 15 inch MBP ?

I'm looking to buy new memory for my early 2011 15 inch MBP because it's running way to slow ( i have 4GB memory). I want to put 16 GB on it. Will it support it?

I too want to add memory to my 15" MacBook Pro, early 2011.
It has: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7. Currently I have 8GB installed. I saw this post and thought yahoo! HOWEVER, when I look on Apple's site it says no. That the memory is tapped at 8GB. I really hope to go to 16 GB.
Here is the link I found:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270
So, since this post says the laptop will support 16 GB and the above says only 8 GB. Please help.
    Thanks,

My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on. Sometimes goes down after it gets in the sleep mode but another times it goes down when i'm working on it. The battery lights and the magsafe light still work but the screen doesn't respond, i have to shut down the computer and only after a couple of tries to turn it on i the screen wakes up. Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?

Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?

    install iStat menus:

When the MBP gets hot, post images of both for inspection.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 - Migrated from MBP that had Flash but now it won't work

Does anyone else have a solution to this issue that does not involve doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard? There was another thread in this forum where the OP indicated that they did a fresh install of SL and that solved the issue. However, that solution is not acceptable to me.
I did a system migration from a Time Machine backup (from my old MBP which was also running 10.6.6) when I purchased my new 2011 MacBook Pro last week. All my applications seemed to be working normally until I attempted to watch a YouTube video in either Safari or Chrome. In both browsers, all I get is a black screen where the video should be playing.
I downloaded and installed the latest version of the Flash Player for Safari and I am not able to manually update the Flash Player for Chrome since that browser keeps the Flash Player up-to-date automatically. The black screen persists when attempting to watch a video on YouTube. I cleared the site cache for the Flash Player just in case something was buggy there, but the problems remains.
The last thing I tried was to remove Flash Player for Safari entirely by running the Adobe Flash Player Install Manager and choosing "Uninstall." I then re-installed Flash Player but the problem persists.
Finally, I am not running any third-party firewall software. When I right-click on a YouTube video, the menu says "Movie not loaded..."
Any assistance would be much appreciated!

Created a new user account on the machine and the problem remained when logged in as the new user.
For giggles, I decided to try to pull up a YouTube video on my wife's 2010 MBP. She hasn't been complaining that she was unable to load content. I was astonished to find that Safari on her laptop is exhibiting the same issues that mine is when going to YouTube in Chrome or Safari. . .black screen where the video should be.
I know I haven't changed any configurations on our router, so I doubted that was the culprit. I can't imagine that an ISP would block YouTube, of all things. To rule these things out, I went back to my laptop and tethered it to my 3G smartphone. Still, even using the cell network, YouTube videos are "blacked out."
Also, I run several VMs, so I tried loading YouTube in Chrome and IE in Windows 7 and they both exhibit the same problem. At this point, I'm dumbfounded that both mine and my wife's MacBook Pros have the same problem when connecting to different networks and the problems persist across OS'es.
Any other suggestions you can think of aside from making a trip to the Apple Store?

  • Replacing 2011 17" i7 MBP 128gb SSD with 13" MBA with 256gb SSD?

    Hi Guys,
    Looking for your input.
I'm now using the 2011 17" MBP i7 with 128gb SSD as my only machine.
I'm using it mainly for my Adobe CS5, Streaming HD content to my PS3,
Parrarel, Torrent, Surfing and iphoto/itunes. With occasional steam games.
I've just put the order for 13" MBA, with i7 and 256gb SSD.
Will be fast enough to replace my MBP and do the tasks above?
Will it be much slower? I don't do video renders.
The reason I'm getting the air is that I'm travelling regularly.
Also I will hook it up to the new 27" thunderbolt Display.
    Thanks for your input.

CS5 is a pretty intensive application, and so is Parallels. I still think you'll be okay with CS5, but Parallels runs sort of slowly on my 11 inch Air. So, I installed my Windows in Bootcamp where it runs a lot smoother, and is a better overall experience. I'm not saying you can't used parallels with the Air, it probably just won't run quite as smoothly as it does on your 17. However, it will be able to handle the remaining tasks you listed with ease, I really do think you'll like it a lot more than your 17 inch pro. The new Airs are just so likeable- there's nothing I can find wrong with mine. I have a 15 inch Pro (2011, Thunderbolt, 2.2 GHZ) and ever since I got my Air last week I've used the Air 80% of the time and my Pro 20% of the time. It's just more enjoyable to use, and even though I'd never let go of my Pro because of how powerful it is, I know I'm going to continue to use my Air more.

  • 2011 2.2 MBP is it good for AV production?

Are the new 2011 MBP's good for AV production?  I've heard that some producers are having problems and having to return them. Any comments?

Make sure you get the15"/17" 2.3 i7 quad core. You may need all of your processing distributed over the 4 cores and the graphics processor with 1GB if you are doing cpu/gpu intensive work.....in order to avoid the high temperatures seen on the 13 inch 2.7 and to a degree on the 15 inch 2.0GHZ.
The 13 inch has a 2.7 i7 with two physical and four virtual cores and no dedicated gpu....it gets hot video rendering and h.264 conversions. The 15 inch 2.0Ghz with dedicated gpu with 256MB is better but not ideal. The 2.0 Ghz has a smaller cache than the 2.2 and 2.3.

  • 15" MBP (late 2011) vs 13" MBP (late 2013) - graphics

I have an older i7 15" macbook pro 2011, which was custom upgraded with 8GB RAM and a 240GB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD. Sadly this has just suddenly suffered from a logic board crash. So im looking to upgrade to a newer models, but trying to detemrine which model is best.
5-6 days a week this is being carried around on my shoulders for work, for 3-6 hours of transit each day. Ouch.
50% of the time this will be used for emails
40% of the time this will be used for photoshop, lightroom, and illustrator. Nothing too intensive, but large library of all RAW photos.
10% of the time this will be used for viewing 3D files via Meshlap or eDrawings. No editing, just simple open, view, spin around, etc.
    Option 1 - Macbook AIR
Ideally, I would love to get an air, as it is super light. But it is also sadly super weak from what I have seen. So it is out of the question.
    Option 2 - 15" Macbook Pro
I could go with the new 15" maxed out, but it costs a fortune and I think it is overkill for what i need. Plus, while it is 1 pound lighter than my previous 15", it is still heavy to lug around everywhere.
    Option 3 - 13" Macbook Pro
Alternatively I think a 13" Macbook Pro maxed out would be pretty good too. It is smaller, and much lighter (2 pounds) than my previous 15". My biggest concern is the graphics power of the "Iris".
I know the 15" has the Iris Pro, which is better than the Intel HD3000, but not sure if the Iris (non pro) is also better? But im guessing for the standard emails and run of the mill 2D work, the Iris is probably ok, right? Or am i wrong on this?
And more improtantly, is the Iris capable of handling the 3D file viewing smoothly, compared to the AMD 6770M of the previous 15"? I did test open some 3D files on my wifes 13" 2011, which only has the HD3000, and it was a bit choppy. But if the Iris (non-pro) is much more powerful than the HD3000, then maybe it is sufficent?
Any thoughts on this? Appreciate it!

No one can comment on if the 13" maxed out could handle reviewing 3D files?

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 Start Up takes longer in MBP 13 2011 than in MBP 13 2010

    Hi,
I used to have a Macbook Pro 13, middle of 2010.
Now, I changed it for the i7 Macbook Pro 13, early 2011.
In both macs I've been using Windows 7 over bootcamp, and also, Parallels 6.
The problem that I have with the new one i7 2011, is that it takes a lot of time to boot in Windows. It even shows a black screen before booting windows for many seconds. The old one 13 from 2010, used to boot in Windows 7 without the black screen, so it was much more faster.
This problem does not happen when I start the windows bootcamp partition using Parallels 6 in Mac OS X 1.6.7.
In fact, since I have an SSD Drive, it boots faster the windows 7 bootcamp partition from parallels in MAC OSX, than booting window 7 bootcamp directly from the beginning.
I have Bootcamp 3.2, and Apple Software Update in Windows 7 does not show any missing new versions of bootcamp drivers.
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Thanks
    Luciano

OK, I think the solution is close to these ones:
It seems that bootcamp messes around with the windows 7 activation somehow... Even if the Windows 7 is a legal copy as mine is... And my copy of windows says "Activated" on my Control Panel -> System
    Anyway, here are the links...
    - http://viperfx07.blogspot.com/2010/01/tutorial-fixing-slow-booting-in-windows.ht ml  this last link It seems it uses a SLIC program to activate windows... Don;t understand it...
I still haven'ttested it.... And I think, since They deal with the Master Boot Record, it could break the bootcamp partition and make it not-bootable...
So, if someone of you guys don't mind to test it, I'll really thank you. (My bootcamp partition has lot of work-related files) and I don't want to mess around with it...

  • MBP 8,2 Overheating?

    I got an MBP 8,2 with 2,2 ghz, 4gb ram, 1 gb gpu, 750 gb 5200 hdd.
I am using it about a year now.
I am having freezing issues from almost the day i got it. And I tried to solve it in topics here and all over the internet. I tried almost everything. I got a fresh install for 3 OS's. And all other stuff recommended. But nothing helped until now.
I am kind a tired and thinking of selling it.
But because of my school conditions I am gonna wait until January.
I am having a question in my head nowadays. Since I am using iPhoto and Skype a lot nowadays, and both are using around %100 cpu, my MBP is incredibly heating (around 90-95 C) and fans goes up to 6200 in a minute. Is it normal? As I surf over the internet even their MB goes up to 80-90 C fans dont go that high.
Do you recommend thermal paste reapplying?
    Thanks.

No idea about your issue with the artifacts, but safe mode disables all drivers except ones needed for system operation. That does include graphics drivers.

  • Worth it to upgrade MBP 2011 to latest MBP?

Hi all, I'm running an early 2011 15" mac book pro with Mavericks of course. I haven't upgraded anything- still using the out of the box 4gb RAM, etc. although I do use an external hard drive for backing up as well as keeping my iphoto library on and running through the external drive any time I access iPhoto.
My computer has been very sluggish lately and I know I need to increase the memory to 8 or 16gb. I run Adobe Creative Suite nearly 100% of the time- I'm rarely doing something that doesn't require it. I am unable to run more than one of the programs at a time (usually illustrator + safari is the max without having impossibly slow actions)  and while I've made that work, it takes about twice as long to do the simplest tasks.
Anyways, I was seeing if Apple sold memory for my computer (they don't) and saw the financing through Barclay. I didn't expect to be approved but was, and realized there are only 10 days allowed to make a purchase and use the financing. So my question is- am I better off buying the most recent mac book pro or is the money better spent just buying the memory for about $150ish and keeping my 2011 computer? I was only approved for $2k so I'd either have to buy the basic 15" that they offer or request a higher credit limit (don't know if that's likely but will try.)
I appreciate any and all insight, I'm a bit lost as to what would make the most sense and unfortunately only have a few days to decide! Thank you!
ETA: While I would obviously love the retina display, it is not a priority to me. I am mostly looking at speed and performance.

You could send your fairly recent MB/Pro off to OWC for a new SSD and RAM
upgrade, perhaps even a more; and only pay a little real money. Or get an
more recent MB/Pro from Apple special deals refurbished and have enough
left over from the discount to afford AppleCare additional coverage.
But it isn't a saving to go into debit for an upgrade over full retail, when a
specialist or expert could retrofit the one you have, or a discounted newer
model, with high quality upgrade for significantly less than twice as much.
macsales.com upgrades are reasonable ways to gain performance...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook-ibook-macbook/
And the Apple Store has this section in special deals refurbished:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_pro
Sometimes they'll have a older non-retina model here with the DVD drive
and more easily upgraded RAM, in 15", and inventory comes & goes.
Better to not be in a rush, and find value in patience...
{Stories of buying based on 'free interest' usually have an agenda
and profit margin over the course of contractual obligation often is
    based on the chance you may miss a payment, then pay huge fines}
Like buying a new car vs paying to get new shocks, brakes, tires, &
maybe a new windshield on the old car with 50k miles. Dubious math.
Anything can happen to the new one, and its loss will cost more, too.
Don't mind me, I've been into buyer's remorse ahead of talking myself
into any 'great deals' though I do shop for antiques at thrift stores.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • UPGRADING RAM IN 2011 13 inch MBP i7

Can I use the 2x4GB RAM pieces from late 2010 13 inch MBP to upgrade my new 13 inch MBP i7
only difference I can see is that old ones are rated 133 GHz and new one is 166GHz  - please advise before I try this.

Thanks for that - would it make much difference using the older RAM anyway in the new machine - would the 200% size improvement overcome the small speed difference ?   Or is the result too drastic to make it worthwhile ?

  • Posted new Mainstage vids on Youtube...feedback welcome

    Hi,
Just in case anyone is interested in this topic, I posted a couple of vids on YT showing how to automate Mainstage via Logic Pro using the IAC driver.
I posted the "what" I did, will do the "how" next but just wondering to what level to take it to? Any feedback is appreciated. i.e. after watching the video is the "how" already obvious?

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for taking the time out to reply..greatly appreciated!
Yes, you're dead on...my point was to create interest and awareness of this method as an option and maybe spark us into using it creatively and productively. Might not work for everyone but it's food for thought.
I agree on the MIDI Pipe option, on top of what you said, I found it kinda confusing but maybe that's just me
On your item 1) about not being in control, you're right and I totally understand...I use an external controller to stop/start the sequence wherever I want. I think it depends on the implementation as well...I have multiple songs spread over different tracks and just arrange a group of tracks by song and then mute/position what I want or don't want. The other way is to spread them out horizontally and run your sequence by position. Or have separate Logic files, there are lot's of ways to do it. The interesting thing is that if you mute let's say a PC track(s) Logic just doesn't send out the MIDI data...kinda handy. Might be a bit on the manual side, but at least I have an option available to me that I never had before
On 2) I'm running 4GB (nothing crazy) on my 2.16Ghz Core 2 duo iMac...works just fine.
On 3) On the how...yeah, you're exactly right, I haven't done the "how to" video yet - will try to do over the next day or so and post. But the short answer is just create a track for an external instrument, click the Library tab in the media browser and the IAC Bus created through Audio/MIDI setup will be listed there, choose that. Then just add in the MIDI events via the Event browser/editor.
    Thanks again for your feedback!

  • ATM CLD Exam Solution: Feedback Welcome

Attached is my solution for the ATM Exam.  It took about 6 hours to complete, but I think I could get it down to 4 (I took a significant detour).
I'd love to hear from fellow test takers or graders out there on the choice of architecture and readability.
    Thanks,

Here are a few more suggestions after reviewing your code.
Clean up your wires. There are unnecessary bends all over the place as well as wires that run back on themselves (Out of position property node).
Definitely get reid of all the property nodes. You really aren't using data flow with property nodes all over the place.
As mentioned earlier, everything including the subVIs eed to be documented.
Verify your functionality. This application doesn't meet the requirements. The out of position LED is not light properly for one. As mentioned your stop is not a graceful shutdown of the application.
Use a project for your application.
Consider placing your timing control in a subVI. You effectively have multiple copies of this functionality in your code.
Don't use the Wait VI for timing control.
As mentioned this really isn't a producer/consumer architecture. Take a look at the examples for how this normally looks.
    All constants should be labeled.
Resize the front panel. Front panels should be size appropriately and shouldn't be a huge window with a few controls and indicators on it.
Resize the block diagram to fit on a single screen and avoid the need to scroll to see everything.
Make sure to align the controls and indicators are aligned on the front panel.
