24-bit soundfont sp

Where can I find the specification for the new soundfont file format enabling 24-bit samples? (Assuming that's what "24-bit sampling" means.)?I've combed the Creative and EMU sites, but can't find a specification for 24-bit soundfonts. The Soundfont 2. spec (also known as 2.0, as labeled in the spec itself) is explicitly limited to 6-bit samples. As a designer of free soundfonts (jRhodes3), I'm interested in how to create a soundfont with 24-bit samples. Note that I do not use Vienna and do not plan to. Thanks,Jeff?Message Edited by learjeff on 03-02-200605:3 PM

  • X-Fi ExtremeMusic Digital In

Hi @all,?I have a little question about the Flexijack connector. I'm watching TV with my PC. Now I have an external digital cable receiver (DVB-C) used for normal TV. The video signal runs through a?coax cable to the video-in of my graphics card. The DVB-C receiver deli'vers an ac3 signal over an electrical digital out (coax). It is possible to connect a coax cable (with an adapter) to the flexijack to get the ac3 signal decoded by the x-fi and send to my 5. soundsystem (connected directly the the soundcard)?Or?can the Flexijack only be used for digital?output? If this config doesn't work I will have to save more money for the plantinum version. ...

Thanks, jutapa. Got it sorted in the meantime. First of all, the settings on the X-Fi, in Audio Creation Mode open the console and click the Settings button in the bottom left-hand corner, then set as follows::
-- "Master Sampling Rate": 44.1 kHz
    -- Check "Enable Bit-Matched Playback"
    -- Select "Digital I/O"
-- Under Decoder, select "On (External Decoder)"
Then open the the MOTU Audio Console, and on the "828mk2" tab, select "Optical Input Off", and on the "General" tab choose "SPDIF" as the clock source. This was the important bit, because the coax inputs on the 828 are only enabled when the optical input is disabled.
This setup allows me to record Soundfonts digitally along with the multiple other inputs of the 828. The only bit I don't know, is whether a 24-bit soundfont is presented with full 24-bit resolution at the X-Fi digital output.

  • Question to Forum moderators

    Dear moderators,
Is there any person at Creative (other than customer support) to whom I could discuss the Sound Font and Midi issues with the X-Fi card?
I have emailed customer support on several occasions, and was even directed to Developer Support regarding my issues with the card but haven't gotten an answer.
To be honest, I'm quite frustrated with the fact that the sound card isn't 100% compatible with Sound Fonts and MIDI the way previous models were.
If I can't contact somebody myself, would it be possible for you do send along this information to the correct people at Creative?
This problem has existed since the card came out and we're coming up on 2 years since I first contacted customer support and still no fix for these issues.
These are the problems with SF and MIDI:
1.- Effects on Sound Fonts are close to non-existent no matter if you max the levels on them.
2.- The card no longer responds to envelope controllers.
3.- Polyphony number is MUCH less than that on the Audigy series and previous models (MIDI files I made with the SoundBlaster32 and sounded great now have notes cut off).
I'm sorry if this in any way inconveniences you but I've tried the contact information on the Creative site without success.
Thank you in advance for any help.

perihelion54, I hear you. I can't help you, other than to offer my support. I have questions about the technical spec of the soundfont engine as well, and it's difficult to know where to get answers.
The only reason I have an X-Fi is for the 24-bit soundfont feature. I haven't gotten into the detail of programming the X-Fi yet, although I have created soundfonts for the Live! and Audigy range.
There's a few new features in the latest (2.4?) version of Vienna, so that might be worth a try. I have been using AWave Studio 10, which SoniVox also seem to use by times.

  • Soundfont Bank Manager and Windows Vista/Seven (64 bits)

    Hi everyone !
Well I own a SB Audigy SE, running on Windows 7/Vista in 64 bits architecture. The fact is, when I try to launch the SF Bank Manager, I do have an error message : "SoundFont bank manager initialization failure".
I tried to run it in various compatibility modes (XP, Vista, etc ), nothing works. The SB audigy SE is SoundFont .x and 2.x compatible, so I don't understand why it does not work.
Does a version of the SF Bank Manager exist for 64 bits versions of Vista/Seven
PS : the same kind of problem appears with Vienna SF Editor (latest version) : the software does not find any "SoundFont compatible" device.

Going on what Daniel has posted here,
    http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?==4440
I would take it to mean that the SBM only works on XP. Might be worth asking in that thread, and hopefully he can answer you better.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum - Midi, Soundfonts, Squeal of Death

Hi, I bought the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum to get professional Soundfont playback triggered by an external midi keyboard, Soundfont creation using Vienna, and ideally Cubasis with ASIO.
I'm having major problems: When I try and play Soundfonts from either the SoundFont Bank Manager or Vienna, after a couple of minutes I get a high-pitched tone and the computer locks up. I've heard this is the infamous "squeal of death," but am unsure of the fix on my particular machine:
    Gateway V800CSE computer
    Windows 98 SE
    Intel Celeron 800 MHz processor
    Intel Santorini motherboard
    Intel 810e chipset
    BIOS update to P05
    192 MB ram
Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver 620
    DirectX 9.0c
    2 PCI slots
Power Supply: Astec ATX90-3405 (90 watts)
The computer is generally rock-steady - I can spend hours using applications like Firefox, Wordpad, Acrobat Reader, etc. with no crashes. Audio CDs seem to play fine for hours through the Audigy 2.
I've done the equivalent of a clean sweep: wiped the drive and restored from backup to a pre-Creative state, then reinstalled the Creative stuff. No help.
The squeal/lockup happens whether I use the on-screen keyboard or an external midi keyboard, and regardless of what banks are loaded - even small banks like the default 4MB GM presets. It seems to happen at some random point during Soundfont usage, anywhere from one minute to 30 minutes into a session - but it always happens.
I'm not playing difficult passages with a lot of polyphony. In fact the squeal of death sometimes happens when playing just a simple melodic line. I tried allocating more ram in Soundfont Bank Manager, but this didn't seem to help. Creative Diagnostics shows no problems.
I've heard that turning off ACPI sometimes eliminates lockups with Creative cards. However, Windows 98SE installs ACPI by default, and my BIOS doesn't let me turn it off. I understand that by installing from a command line and using a setup switch I can install Win98SE without ACPI. But although I'm handy with computers and good at following instructions, I don't know command line syntax.
Could someone please walk me through the steps? Let's say I boot from a floppy, activate CD-ROM support, get the A-prompt, and put the Windows 98 SE CD in the drive. (Are those the initial steps?) Now what are the exact command lines I would use to run the setup switch, which is something like setup/pi ?
Please help. The card is of no use to me if I can't get professional Soundfont operation. I will have to return it.
I've tried uninstalling the WDM drivers and installing the VXD drivers using Creative's CTZAPXX. That seemed to stop the squeal of death, but greatly limits midi functionality. For example, the WDM drivers recognized that my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum has two sets of midi inputs/outputs: one on the gameport, and one on the platinum drive. It's the platinum ones you can use out of the box, because the adapters are included. Under the WDM drivers, I could choose the second midi port and my external keyboard would trigger the Soundfonts. But under the VXD drivers only one midi port appears in Control Panel or midi apps, and I guess it's the gameport, because all notes from my external keyboard hooked up to the platinum drive's midi input are now ignored. I reinstalled the VXD drivers, but same result. The platinum drive is definitely hooked up; the audio inputs and outputs are working, and my external midi keyboard is definitely sending midi notes.
Could Creative or anyone please confirm that the VXD drivers don't see the platinum drive's midi port? Is there a workaround? If the WDM drivers are unstable, and Win98SE users have to fall back to the VXD drivers to get reliable operation, then could Creative please include a gameport-to-midi adapter in the box, so platinum customers can still use midi?
Are there any other reports of the squeal of death with the 810e chipset?
I'm using DirectX 9.0c. Is this appropriate, or should I be using an earlier version?
The power supply on my machine may be a bit wimpy. Could that be a problem? The published specs are:
    Wattage 90 watt
    Input 90 - 135 V, normal 115 V
    180 - 265 V, normal 230 V
    # Output + 3.3 V (0 A min, 6.0 A max)
    # + 5 V (1.0 A min, 10 A max)
    # + 12 V (.02 A min, 1.5 A max)
    # -12 V (0 A min, 0.2 A max)
    # + 5 VSB (0 A min, 1.4 A max)
Finally, how often is the squeal of death solved by simply exchanging the card? (It's only a week old.)
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Best regards.

    - No, my BIOS doesn't have "PCI Config 32 Clock Retry."
I took some time to look back in my archives. The canonical SOD problem was seen on WinXP on certain Dell systems using Intel motherboards incorporating certain new (at the time) Intel chipsets. I have the i815 chipset referenced in my archives, though not the i810. Dell systems, such as the 8100, did not have access to said BIOS setting, and needed a BIOS update enabling the bit to resolve the SOD problem.
The main variant of the problem did not occur with the VxD drivers at the time, because those drivers were able to enable BIOS settings. WDM drivers were not permitted to change BIOS settings, so the problem did surface with them on susceptible chipsets. Unless there has been a change in this area to the VxD drivers, your reporting hangs with them implies implies a different problem.
    - My other PCI slot was occupied by a Rockwell 56K modem, but I've done a clean reinstall (WDM) without the modem card. I haven't done enough testing to fully report on results. I did get the squeal of death after an hour, but it could be related to a public domain soundfont that was not well-behaved. (Or maybe the Audigy 2 ZS is not well-behaved!)
I really don't think there's a way a soundfont can cause the PCI bus to seize up. I think it would be a good idea to try moving the soundcard to the slot the modem was in, if you haven't already.
In mentioning my computer's power supply, I was relating this to the squeal of death, not the midi port on the platinum drive failing to appear under the VXD drivers.
So was I, although I was keying on your use of an external keyboard, probably incorrectly. You are describing your system as very stable unless the soundcard is used a specific way, and I didn't get the sense that there would be much difference in power requirements involved in that.
I'm thinking that PCI systems are designed to function within certain tolerances. A 56K modem card might make lighter demands on PCI resources than an Audigy 2 card. The modem's handshaking protocols might make it oblivious to momentary timing errors, while the Audigy 2 card might be less forgiving of a wimpy power supply or a PCI subsystem that's not quite up to par. Just a theory. Anyway, I may try the card in another machine and see if it fares better. Wish it weren't so finicky!
That's not bad thinking, and trying it in another machine is a great idea, though one often not very practical for customers who may only have one machine available.
Last night I was noticing that with my external keyboard driving the platinum drive's midi input, there are random delays. The notes will be tight for a few seconds, but then a couple of notes that were played cleanly on the keyboard will spill over each other like dwarves tumbling out of a silly car. Is this a known issue with the platinum drive's midi port when playing soundfonts, or could this be a symptom of an underlying timing issue with my PCI subsystem? (I know there may not be an easy answer to questions like this.)
Has anyone compared the "tightness" of gameport midi vs. platinum drive midi? Is gameport midi any tighter? (I'm on a budget, and don't want to shell out for a gameport-to-midi adapter only to get more of the same.)
I've not heard of this particular complaint before and I have listened a lot. PCI-level problems tend to be of the nature of snap-crackle-pop symptoms (or hangs). What you describe sounds more like a problem with something like interrupt lockout. Without knowing Windows internals very well, a driver coping with lots of recoverable errors might cause that, or if a device causing lots of interrupts is sharing an IRQ with the soundcard, or sometimes multiprocessing support has weaknesses which lead to interrupt latency issues.
When loading and unloading different soundfonts, is memory fragmentation much of an issue? (either PC memory or the Audigy 2's internal memory?).
It can be an issue with being able to load very large soundfonts, but not really much otherwise. The A2 doesn't really have internal memory.
With the Audigy series you're no longer limited to 32 MB soundfont banks. You can load much larger banks into PC memory, but the PC has to send chunks of sound data to the Audigy as needed. I'm wondering if this has impacted stability. Maybe it requires some intensive bursts of data to be sent from PC memory over the PCI bus to the Audigy 2 card.
That part is done on demand, and is driven by what you are playing at the moment rather than everything in the soundfont. If the system is sufficiently memory-tight, allocating more system memory to soundfont storage might lead to excessive paging activity (which could also be behind erratic sluggishness in the system's response to MIDI keyboard events). (In fact, 192MB of system RAM doesn't sound like a lot, even for Win98, when you need to dedicate MB's of it to soundfont storage.)
Does anybody know if there are things you can do during a long session to defragment memory so that no holes develop?
Problems in that area are far more likely to be expressed as dropped notes that to be behind system hangs.
Vienna reports that the Audigy 2 ZS has 12 MB DRAM in Synth A and 12 MB DRAM in Synth B. Does that mean it has a total of 24 MB onboard RAM?
It probably means that 12MB of PC system memory has been allocated to shared use by the two virtual synths. If you have set soundfont memory larger than that and Vienna still says 12 MB, it's probably simply a bit confused in its assumptions. The soundcard doesn't have onboard RAM, although the soundcards Vienna was written for do.

I have tried adjusting the cache level (I have 2 GB of RAM BTW in my system), I keep getting an error can not load. Please HELP!!! I even tried the registry edit.. It did not help one bit.. appears its an issue with the program! What should I do?

hmmm for some reason when you call your EJB and it throws an exception, the JTA transaction is marked as rollbakc so the BPEL EM engine fails to save the instance.
Could you please provide us some additional pieces of information:

  • A minor helpful tip - Convertion of TV Tuner audio output from on-board sc to SB Live! 24 bit

    Hi guys,
Many of you might had known about it but I just would like to share my tiny knowledge here with those who might has the same problem when they upgrade their on-board sc to SB Li've! 24 bit sc.
If you have a on-borad sound card, and if you decided to but a new SB Li've! 24 bit sc and then you might find that all audio are OK after installing the SB Li've! 24 bit sc except sound/audio from your TV tuner !!! . . the TV sound is MUTED!
Firstly, there is this tiny Audio Cable connected from your TV tuner card to a 4-pin input-jumper somewhere on the motherborad (since it's a on-borad sc, you might not find it on the on-board sc or next to it). Please note that my on-board sc is refering to my On-board Realtek AC97 Audio sc as for my case. You might have a different on-borad sc, but generally the setup is more or less the same.
After installing your SB Li've! 24 bit sc, make sure you re-direct this tiny Audio Cable from TV tuner card to the 4-pin Audio input jumper of you SB Li've! 24 bit sc.
Then, go to your WindowsXp Sound control property, UN-MUTE the Auxiliary.
Then, go to your TV software program to configure the AUDIO SOURCE to Auxiliary.
Tada . . you got the sound/audio from TV. Now. . you can surf the net or do your work while enjoy your TV program at the top of the screen!!
    I hope this help!

After reinserting the ATI card, I was not able to test before driver installation due to low resolution video.
I tested after installing the latest ATI driver and still had zero SCP issues.
I then uninstalled the original driver from the SB Li've CD and reinstalled the latest driver from filename SB24_WEB64_LB__04_0055
    SCP is BACK!
This DOES seem to indicate a major change in the Creative drivers from original issue to current issue that are not in spec.

  • Soundfont Newbie Issues

So I am reasonably new to soundfonts, but I find that the vast majority of sf2 soundfonts I download don't work. Some do, which makes me think that the others are just busted, they are freebies after all, but it is literally like 4 to 1, non-working to working. Most do not show up in the EXS-24 menu at all, but a few do and just produce no sound. Is this about par for the course or am I doing something wrong?
Also, I have a lot of files in other formats floating around my soundfont folder in wav and .bk format. Is there a thread on how to get these to work in Logic.
    Cheers!

    Here is a list of all the compression types that I can choose from;
    Animation
Apple Intermediate Codec - Preset options are HDV 720p, HDV 1080i or "other"
    Apple Pixlet Video
    Apple VC H.263
    BMP
    Cinepak

    The frame rates I can choose from are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60
The sound file was originally a .wav format.
The other files in my project are animation clips exported in the same way as the clip I am having issues with.

  • SoundFonts don't seem to do anyth

    Hi,
I downloaded a few soundfonts from http://www.personalcopy.com/home.htm and installed two of them. Then I played several MIDIs and didn't notice any difference. Then, just a minute ago, I tried to play the MIDI "AceOfSpy" that comes with the SB X-Fi Fatality board (it is in the 3D MIDI folder) and the song was all screwed up. I went in and deleted the installed SoundFonts from their banks and the MIDI was good as new again.
What am I missing here? I thought those custom sound fonts would make my MIDIs sound better. They didn't help at all.

    roger,
good to see you here online too
That may be true, but "max bitrate" and "quantization
floor" cannot give you any control over the final
file size. Only the "average bitrate" can do this.
while it is frustrating when you end up with an m2v that's too big for the disc it was supposed to fit onto, my clients tend to make a bigger fuss out of blockiness and other compression artifacts
and probably the ultimate encoding is a good balance between all 3 parameters - so far however encoders seem to fall into two categories, both emphasizing a different subset of these or a different combination of these.
which works for you may then also depend on your way of looking at the problem...
Divide the file size (in bits) by the duration (in
seconds), to get the average bitrate that your
encoder generated, as opposed to what you told it to
    do;-)
that's what failed for me with compressor - resulting in 5+GB discs for 1h50m of material, using the 120 minute per disc preset....
btw audio was ac3 at 192
This is why you can trust BitVice not to generate bigger files than you ask for.
still looking forward to that version 1.7 of bitvice later this week to finally see how it will do on a quad g5

  • SB Live 24-Bit prob

I'm having the SCP issue as well, but mine only started about four weeks ago after installing MicroS*** updates that I had previously been avoiding. I've ran with the SB Li've for over a year with no problems until this point.
    My hardware/software when SCP began:
    ECS 74GX-M mobo
    PCI SB Li've 24-Bit
    AGP ATI All-In-Wonder
    52MB Ram
    Windows 2000
    Atomix MP3 (pro DJ software)
My DJ software can use multiple cards, one for main audio and one for cue.
I was using the SB Li've as my main output and the onboard Realtek AC97 for cue until the SCP started.
I tried swapping to use the SB as my cue, but then the SCP transfers to the Realtek.
If I switch to using only the Realtek for mains and no cue, the SCP vanishes.
Also, if I use the SB as the main output (and don't select the Realtek for cue), the SCP mysteriously disappears!
I've updated from the SB Li've to the SB Audigy (no change), added another 52 MB Ram (no change) and defragged all my dri'ves (no change).
Whatever is causing this isn't in the SB or mobo hardware. It's almost gotta be a MS software conflict related to using both audio outputs. The next trick is going to be tracking down exactly which POS software is causing it. If it were hardware or driver related, I should be experiencing the SCP even if I use the SB by itself.
I have a new hard dri've where I'll be loading up a fresh copy of Win2K, the MS updates and my DJ software. I'll report back on if the problem still persists after this fresh install or not and go from there.
If it still happens, my next step will be to reinstall again, start with just the basic drivers needed to function, then update one step at a time until it shows up.

  • SoundFonts and Synthesizers using SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio

Can anyone tell me if the SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio soundcard has a SoundFont (sf2) capability running under 64-bit Vista Pro? In other words, I want to be able to load and manipulate SoundBanks and SoundFonts using the SoundFont Bank Manager. Particularly, I want to be able to play Band-in-a-Box files using a Creative SoundFont Synthesizer. I also wish to be able to make my own SoundFonts using the Creative WaveStudio 7.
Some folks over on the PG Music forum for Band-in-a-Box seem to think I must move up to a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer. Is this correct?
Currently I can only get the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to run in Band-in-a-Box and it sounds diabolical.
Please note that I am using 64-bit Vista Professional!
?Message Edited by trombone23 on 08-20-2008 05:33 PM

Seeing as the desktop version of the Xtreme Audio doesn't support Game Mode or even have the X-Fi chip on it (card is basically nothing more than a renamed SB Li've 24 bit/Audigy SE), I don't see how the notebook version can be any different. That and from looking at the specs for it I don't see anywhere that it even mentions anything about Game Mode, never mind EAX.

  • Graphic EQ/Surround Mixer/Soundfont Manager for Audigy 4

When I originally got my Audigy 4 SE OEM version, I downloaded the driver and software for it from this website. The cd that came with it had only the driver, and I figured the site would have a more up-to-date version of that anyway. The package I downloaded included the driver, the soundfont bank manager, the surround mixer, the graphic equalizer, and other useful bits of software.
I recently reinstalled Windows, and when I re-downloaded the driver package, I discovered it now comes with only the driver itself and the Creative audio console. I searched the forums looking for others asking the same question, but only found people linking to ISOs of the install cds, and the only one that was for Audigy 4 wouldn't install for me. I'd like to know where I can find the full package, and also, why has all this software disappeared from the downloads section of this site?

you can try here but I don't know if it has the CD for your card.

Please, is very important to me to have this fixed, I spent some money on it and all for having my soundfonts working.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Soundfont Manager initialization fai

My problem is fully described in the title to this thread, but a little backstory might be helpful:
I used to do a lot of musical composition and work with MIDI on a computer with an Audigy soundcard. This computer had the Creative Software Suite installed, and I found the Soundfont Bank Manager an indispensable resource. But in the fullness of time, the computer gave up the ghost, and died. :-)
So now I have to do all my MIDI stuff on another computer, that I bought on eBay. This computer has a SB Li've! 24-bit card, but did not come with any CDs for the soundcard. I searched around on the web to find a place where I could get the Bank Manager, and found out, from this forum, that one could download ISOs of the Creative soundcard driver and software suite CDs. So I got the one for the Li've! 24-bit, and installed the Creative Software Suite on my computer. The Bank Manager was not installed automatically with the other programs, but again I found out from reading this forum where on the CD the installer for it could be found, and so I installed it.
And now we come to my problem: Whenever I run the Soundfont Bank Manager, a popup window appears, saying "". However, all the other programs work fine. Does anyone know what is causing the error, and how to fix it's
    Thanks,
    Mark
