24 fps in a 29.97 sequence

Hi everyone,
I've got a frame rate problem...
I recorded my film on advanced 24 fps and inputed it into final cut pro 5 with the pulldown. Final cut recognizes that my footage is 23.98 fps in clip settings but I've accidentally edited my entire film in a 29.97 sequence! I try to copy my folder into a 24 fps sequence but all my fades and slow motion effects are gone. The film does not look how it's supposed to. Is my 29.97 sequence playing at 30 or 24 fps? Can I simply output my 29.97 sequence at 24 fps? Help! What do I do now?
Thanks,
Michael

Are you guys related? Same issue.
So you copied your sequence, made a new one with 23.98 settings, pasted it and the transtions vanish, and there are gaps? That is the oddest thing I have ever heard.
As to what Pat said...about rendering. When you edited the 29.97 timeline, did you have to render each clip as you added it to the timeline?

  • CS4; detecting correct FPS when importing an image sequence

Here's the problem: I'm rendering a sequence in a serie of targa images at 24 fps in 3dsmax. When importing into premiere pro it always sets it to 29.97 fps. I can use the interpret footage to change it back to 24 fps, but when you have multiple videos everyday it quickly becomes a time waster.
Is there a way to do it automatically?
    Thanks,

Because Premiere changed from having Project Settings in CS3 to Sequence Settings in CS4 and because there is no setting to set the default frame rate for image sequences, there is simply no way to do what you want.
Project Settings used to govern the default frame rate for Sequences and for image sequences.   In CS4, that's not the case.
It seems Adobe forgot about users who use image sequences on a regular basis.

  • Going from 23.98 fps to 25 in a sequence

    Hi,
I made a mistake when setting up one of my sequences. It apparently got set to 23.98 fps although all my footage is in 25FPS. This causes the footage to be quite jerky.
I've tried to change the FPS of the sequence but it seems I can't.
If I make a new sequence set at 25FPS and drop all the stuff in there the stuff plays at the right and smooth speed but all my cuts (a lot of them) are at the wrong places.
Do I have to manually redo every clip now or is there some solution? Please tell me there is!
    Thanks for any eventual help.

More info on the camera that took the footage would help.
    It comes up 29.97 fps
That's standard NTSC. What is the IT in it comes up?

  • About fps...and selecting Sequence Presets

I have had some old (40 yrs) 8mm film converted to a digital format (mov). Now I would like to edit and splice the good bits together. On the properties of the *.mov I find I have DV/DVC Pro -NTS; movie FPS 16; playing FPS 16; data rate 15.35mbits/sec.
My first problem is picking the "right" Sequence Presets. None of the options seem to have a 16 FPS category. I selected the DV NTSC Standard 32khz. Was this my best choice? It seemed to be the closest..
My second problem is what format would be best to export it as.. this will eventually go on Facebook and possibly as a video on a personal web site. And.... is there away to extact a single frame as a image (jpg)
    Any advice most appreciated
    Thanks for your time
    Ralph

Thanks Bill for the quick response.
I see where I can change the FPS in"desktop" > Timebase. There is no option to change it later in that same dialog box under Display Format. The desktop selection also changes the Preview File Format to Microsoft AVI.. I guess.. that is all good??
I had the 8mm film converted by some guy who has a setup in his basement, found him in the Yellow Pages and I guess he would consider himself to be a professional telecine shop.  However he did not give me an option on framerates.. the subject never came up.. and I did not know there were options. I had  a third of the reels converted and plan to have the others done now that I see there is interesting stuff on them. Speculation was they would all be blank or so dark as to render them useless. Pleasant surprise to find they were not
As to the model of the camera... I have no idea , US brand, possibly bought from the Sears Catalog I would think and it was old.. predates any option for sound or super which came out much later

  • Custom Timebase in sequence settings for 15 fps animation

I have an stop-motion project, where we are capturing images to playback at 15 frames per second. I have set up FCP to do this in the past, but I cannot find where the preference is. I thought you could just set your sequence settings to use a 15 fps timebase, but all of the options are from 24p to 60. I have an older project file that has the 15 fps timebase, so i could just copy that sequence, but am I missing the obvious preference option to make a 15 fps sequence, or did they take that option away between fcp 3 and 4.5?

I was thinking about working at 30 fps, and setting the image sequences to use a two second rather than one second duration to simulate the 15 fps playback rate of the movie, but the problem is that the cut made in fcp is only an offline edit, made using lo-quality quicktimes that have to be replaced with the original image sequences for the final export.
Its not to big of an adjustment to do this, but I don't see why I have to now, and didn't need to before, especially since I will double my file sizes.

  • PriemrePro CS6 exports at 23.7 fps instead of 23.976

I have Premiere Pro CS6 (Master Collection) on Mac Pro Desktop.
When I export my sequence 1920x1080, 23.976fps, XDCAM EX 1080p HQ to output at 1920x1080, 23.976fps, Quality 100, ProRes422, the frame rate in the mov file comes out at 23.70 fps.  Checked all the sequence and export settings are set at 23.976 fps. I did direct export as well as via Queue, no difference, it outputs at 23.7 fps.
I wonder why mov files output is at 23.70 fps? Tested the file on the theater (cinema) projector, it does not play well at all.  I have a deadline to resubmit it today.  What can I do?  Is this a bug in PremierePro CS6?  I appreciate your help, Please!

If the software reading frame rate incorrectly, then why mov file didn't play back properly on the theater projector system?  24 fps does play properly on the same system. Video edited on PremierePro submitted by others at 23.976 fps does play properly.
I just did export of short (~2GB) segment of the same sequence I was working on:
one export with 23.976 fps, the output mov reads 22.79 fps (different reading than the prior 23.7 fps)
the other with 24 fps, output reads 24 fps.
I checked my previous export (a month ago) ProRes 23.976 fps, the output mov reads 23.98 fps.
I don't think software is reading fps incorrectly.

  • The sequence totally out of sync after sending it from Color to FCP

I finished my color corrections in Color and thought I'd send it to FCP again.
When I opened it in FCP everythign was out of sync. The text I had added wasn't where it was supposed to be, the sound I hade deleted was back(!) and some clips were cut down.
    Anyone know why this happened?
    Thanks

There are a lot of known issues with 25 fps material -- bad timecode, corrupted sequences, etc.
It does appear as if there is an XML issue where a revision has been done and COLOR is using a previous version of the sequence ( "sound I had deleted was back(!)" ).
This has been discussed elsewhere. If you make a copy of a sequence -- treat the COPY as your backup and keep on working with the ORIGINAL. DO NOT carry the project forward if you are going to use COLOR/XML at some point because it will refer to the ORIGINAL, not the COPY. Color does not generate new XML, it edits the file that was "Sent". Strictly, speaking, then this is not wholly a Color issue but the way that FCP carries XML.
Hey, consider yourself lucky. Your text made the trip, mostly. Usually, I find that it has been mysteriously added to... like a blank line now shows up as a row of "00000000000" -- that was pretty funny.
And LiveType ipr's are suddenly missing fonts and "media"...
    Ah such fun.

  • How to get a 29.97 video file into a 23.98 sequence without it being jumpy

I filmed on a miniDV tape and recorded in 24PA, and when i captured it in 'Advanced Pulldown', it still gave me a file that is in 29.97 fps. because of this, i get those horizontal lines every so many frames
I wanted it to be 24PA so that i could drop it into a timeline with other videos in the same fps.
so i create a sequence with all the right compressor settings and aspect ratio and all of that, but i change fps to 23.98.
Then i drop the video in the timeline. it asks if i want to change the settings of the sequence to match the video, but i click no, because if i say 'yes', it'll change the sequence back to 29.97
so i put it in there render it, and then i get a video that is really jumpy almost like it has some kinda strobe effect on the video.
does anyone know how i could fix this problem??!

Are you sure you shot 24pA? And not just regular old 24p?
Just dropping it in the timeline will not work..that is NOT the way to get it to 23.98. Try using Cinema Tools, or even FCP in the TOOLS menu, the REVERSE TELECINE option.

  • Adobe Media Encoder: introducing stairs (edge artifacts)

Adobe Media Encoder: Is it fundamentally flawed?
When exporting Flash content to video, I noticed that Adobe Media Encoder introduces artifacts around edges that have a sharp contrast. The problem does not seem to be affected by bitrate or other settings and if I frameserve the video from Premiere out to a command line encoder, the problem does not occur, which leads me to believe that there is a big problem within Adobe Media Encoder. Most users may not notice/experience the problem if they are dealing with live action footage, but if your project contains animation (esp. Flash animation), it is a HUGE issue, if you are trying to maintain picture quality.
(Note: I've tried exporting on 3 separate hardware setups and I've even tried reverting to CS2 -> the problem exists in all of my tests)
Can someone else confirm the problem? (The problem is clearly there when exporting to MPEG2, Windows Media)
How to clearly recreate the problem
    In Adobe Flash
    Create a Flash project: 1280 x 720, 24fps, Stage Color: White
Create two symbols: - a red circle with a thin hairline black stroke
    - a larger blue circle with a thicker black stroke
Create 2 layers on the timeline, place an instance of each symbol on the timeline on separate layers and create a motion tween for each symbol so that they move both horizontally and vertically across the screen.
Make the animation last at least 3-4 seconds and make sure the circles are not moving too fast.
Set opposite easing values for each circle (one with 100, the other with -100)
Export Movie... Bitmap Sequence...24 bit color, match screen.
In Premiere, create a new project:
    Custom Settings:
    Editing Mode: Desktop
    Timebase: 24.00 frames/second
    Frame Size: 1280 x720
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square (1.0)
    Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
    Display Format 24 fps Timecode
Import the bitmap sequence. Select the first file in the sequence and check Numbered Stills.
Place the Flash footage into a sequence.
    Export...Adobe Media Encoder.
    Try the following preset settings:
    - MPEG2, HDTV 720p 24 High Quality
    - Windows Media, HDTV 720p 24 High Quality
    - Quicktime, HDTV 720p 24

Yeah, mp4 in HTML5 browsers is h.264 encoded - h.264 is a subset of MPEG-4 standard. More info here:
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For ease of use in AME, if you look at the right side of the UI in the presets, the Web Video > YouTube presets are the ones that will encode to h.264 with the mp4 extension.

  • Premiere CS5 Crashes when exporting

Yeah, sounds familiar.  I hate to add yet another discussion on this, but I have a specific question. . .   s
I have an Intel i7 965 with 6G of Ram; lots of disk space and running Win 7 64 Bit.
I have been running the CS4 version of Premiere Pro for sometime, and just downloaded, installed CS5.  This new project is the first one, and was built new, not 'converted' from a previous version.
The sequence (there's only one) has a number of clips in video track 1 and about 10 titles in video track 2. The entire length of the sequence is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
When I export to an AVI file, it begins to 'render' but crashes at about 74 percent completion.  That is about 56 minutes into the sequence.  I assumed I would find the offending title or effect (there are not many effects in use) at that point in time, but, of course, at that point, it is about 7 minutes into a clip that is about 25 minutes long.  Nothing else is at that point.  Just the video clip.
So, I removed the video clip and it exported just fine.
So, I created a new project and imported the offending video file -  which, btw, is the same as the others, an MPG file.   It gets to about 8 percent complete and crashes.   No titles, no effects, just add the asset and export.  Crash.  I shortened the clip until it finally rendered - about 6 minutes long.
    Any ideas?
The original project - with the offending clip - rendered once.  I don't recall what settings I had, but it did make it through the entire sequence.  I've not been able to do it again.

The source file was created by playing a (VHS) tape player into a Hauppauger video interface and Beyond TV software.  I simply recorded the tape (which I can do again if I have to), and Beyond TV was configured to create a MPEG2 files.
So, once created, I import the file into PP.  The 'dimensions' of the MPEG file is 720x480 and 29 fps.  Same as the sequence I loaded the clip into.
I can only assume there is something wrong with that one place in the clip.  The actual clip is about an hour and a half long -  I was only using the first 20+ minutes.  I have rendered the rest of the clip (that AFTER the problem area) with no issue.
I can do back and re-record that part of the VHS tape where the problem is, and maybe that MPEG file will be OK. . .
It's taken all day, but what seemed to be a Premiere Pro issue (it just happen to be the FIRST project I created with the new CS5 version), now seems to be data.

  • Trying to output HDCAM...

So i have several QT clips that were shot with various frame rates....ranging from 24 to 60 frames. Some were shot using DVCPRO HD 720p 60i (see below):
    1. DVCPRO HD 720p60, 960X720 23.98 fps
    2. DV 720X480 29.97 fps
    3. DVCPRO HD 720p60, 960X720 59.94 fps
I have built a sequence using the DVCPRO HD 720p 30 in FCP. Using Media Manager.....could i theoretically output this to APPLE PRO RES 422(HQ) 1920 X 1080i 30p to HDCAM? Keep in mind i am only using FCP 6.0.2 with no additional hardware. We are trying to build 1 QT to have a post house output to HDCAM. Hopefully we are doing this correctly.

NO need to transcode to anything. Just export out a self contained QT file, take that to a post facility with a Kona 3 card, and they can output your 720p 23.98 to 1080p 23.98 HDCAM, upconverting on the fly thru the card.
I have done this many a time.

  • Slow motion effect

I was wondering how to get that slow motion effect that is so commonly used i music videos. I have a canon xha1 that shoots 60i and 50i. To achieve this effect do I do it all in FCP, or is a combination of having the fps high and then the sequence at 24. I could do it in FCP, but it doesn't look clean. If any body has anysuggestions, thankyou. peace. E.

Final Cut Pro can do slow motion with or without frame blending. In both instances you are creating duplicates of frames in order to create a slow motion effect. These look okay in video but with the effects you are talking about are done with large production values where the shots are done with slow mags where the film is running at a high rate of speed to get more frames in an action. There are cameras today that allow you to over and under crank footage but mainly they are tapeless formats where you are recording to hard drives, disks or cards.
you might want to investigate After Effects version 7 or later where it does time warping where individual pixels are blended rather than an entire frame like in Final Cut.

  • Mixing Frame Rates and Creating Old Film Look?

Hello, I'm working with AVCHD footage which is 59.94 fps and have made my sequence settings at this frame rate. I've dragged in a few clips 23.98fps, 24fps, 25fps and 29.97fps, I'm attempting to give it a old film look so was going to render out at 14 fps as this is what 8mm is filmed at, I've never worked with mixed rates so any advice as to whether this is going to work? Should I have my sequence setting at my highest frame rate and the majority of the video is 59.94fps? would it work exporting at 14 or 16 fps?

I've never worked with mixed frame rates, but for the old film look, I like the Posterize Time effect set to 18 (one of the two standards for Super 8 that my camera had) and use Magic Bullet Misfire.

  • Web Export

ok I shot some footage -- 720x480 SD at 24fps anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio -- looks great but Ive been trying to export it for the web and Im getting nowhere fast!
I tried "Export Quicktime Movie" and Ive tried to use Quicktime conversion... when I try to use Quicktime the quality looks awful and the aspect ratio goes back to 4:3
so then I tried compressor.... a multitude of different settings. at least with compressor, I can maintain the aspect ratio but the image is terrible.
using H.264 codec, I tried all the different frame rates, put the pixels as "square" since end result is for computer monitor....
in the compressor preview, you can really see the difference between the original, which is a great picture and the output which is pixilated when there is lots of movement.
    suggestions?
    thanks.

First, I'm assuming you mean 24p (23.976 fps) not 24 fps.
And that your sequence settings match your clip settings.
So, here's what's gonna give you the best result (in my experience)
Export quicktime movie with current settings (self contained)
Bring this file into compressor.  Choose the apple:  other workflows:  web:  download:  quicktime 7 compatible: h264 lan.  preset and apply it to the file in the batch window.
Double click on the preset in the batch window to load it into the inspector and you'll customize it as follows.
In the geometry panel, Set the frame size to 854 by 480 square pixels.
In the frame controls panel, enable frame controls by clicking on the gear wheel to the right of the frame controls off/on and turn the frame controls on and change the resize filter to best.
If you need higher quality, you can go into the encoder panel  and click on video settings and adjust the quality slider, but generally this is not necessary with standard def material.
post back if any of this isn't clear.

  • Im having problems importing prores files at correct frame rate

im having problems importing prores files at correct frame rate. they have been converted to prores at 25fps but on importing they appear in fcp as 30fps. any help would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about Wondershare. But it seems something may have got messed up in the conversion. Or maybe there is an identifier on the converted clip that has FCP confused and it really is 25 fps.
To begin, your sequence settings don't match your clips. You want a Pro Res sequence. Let FCP set this automatically by dragging a Pro Res to an empty sequence and when gives you a message asking whether you want the sequence to match the clips, click yes. Then hit command 0 again and see whether the frame rate is set at 30 or 25.
If it really is 30, then it will need to be converted and re-imported. It can be done in Compressor or in Cinema Tools. If you have used Cinema Tools before, great. Of not, I'll defer to others because it's been a while and I don't want to mess you up.
    Good luck.
