24inch iMac scren appears to be transparent

I'm using a 24in iMac purchased in August 2008, and using it for photo editing...my monitor appears to be transparent..when i'm in on application, I can almost see an underlying layer of whatever other application is open, or in some cases even silhouttes of whatever image is currently being used as my desktop. My display is set at 1920 x 1200, and brightness is turned all the way up. i have it currently set to the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile.
does anyone know how I can get rid of this. it gets really distracting when looking at images in full screen.

Are you absolutely sure that the lines that you are seeing are from an active program that's running in the back, at that very same location?
It looks like 'screen burn-in' to me. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_burn-in
Have you let your computer run for a very long time without a screensaver at full brightness? Burn-in can still happen sa far as I know..
You can try Googling for burn-in solutions.. If it's really burn-in, I don't think you can fix this easily.
Hope this was helpful, eventhough it's not exactly good news.
Regards.

Hi, I have a mid 2007 24inch iMac currently running on 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade directly to 10.7 and if so, can I expect any issues?  Thanks

You need to have a copy of Snow Leopard installed to access Lion in the Mac App Store. There's no direct path to upgrade from Leopard to Lion.
I did read a piece earlier this week about Apple giving free copies of Snow Leopard to new iCloud subscribers, you might want to look into this here:

    Hope this helps.

  • Thinking of buying 24inch Imac. Got a few purchasing questions.

Hi, I am thinking of getting the 24inch Imac. 3.06Ghz processor. 4 gigs of ram. 1tb HD. And the price is $3,017.
I was wondering if I go to my nearest Apple store on Tax Free weekend (or the apple online store). Will I get Tax off the Imac?
Also my mom is a homeschool teacher. Will she be able to get the Education discount at the Apple Store (not online one)?

You'll need a lot more than tax off your imac. The question you should be asking is..."should I buy one?". You should (try and) talk to someone at Apple before you spend that much money, and ask them why the Video/Display on the 24" Intel Core Duo is so unreliable and flaky. They don't seem to want to address the SERIOUS issues. You have no idea what I'm going through (conveniently for Apple , after warranty expiration) with my lemon. I have owned dozens of Macs, and this is by far, the most unreliable, flaky, crash-prone, frustrating piece of equipment I have ever purchased. I have to place a large fan about 12 inches from the computer to prevent it from overheating. If the ambient room temperature gets over 22-23 degrees Celcius, the crashes are far more frequent... sometimes about 30 minutes apart - if I'm lucky enough to be able to work that long. I can't count how many preference and database files have been corrupted by these sudden shutdowns. Often, it takes many attempts (or a long wait) before I can reboot. I can barely see what I'm writing now, because there's a grey line through most of the text. I've emailed Apple, but received no response - no surprise there. I send many crash reports a day too. They need to concentrate on developing a reliable, stable platform before they waste so much of their time and my money on pretty, shiny boxes. I'm disgusted. I posted (just a few) examples of what I see all day, every day, at: http://gallery.me.com/jjmcharg/100009
Good luck with your search for a computer.

It will connect to a TV or monitor with either HDMI or component inputs.
It is mainly designed to be used with HDTV's.
It won't work with an iMac's monitor.
    Some monitors have HDMI inputs.

  • When I start my iMac 2008, appear something like folder with question mark inside

When I start my iMac 2008, appear something like folder with question mark inside

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Getting Vista's "Aero" feature to work on new 24inch iMac

Recently I purchased a brand new 24inch iMac. I also brought parallels for Mac and installed the Home Premium addition of Vista.
Visa is running fine, but there is one feature that is not working....which is "AERO".
My video card is the NVIDIA GE Force 7300GT. I have 2 Gigs of memory, tons of hard disc space. I think Aero has been automatically diasbled because of an incompatibility issue with my video card / driver. Has anyone had a similar experience and if so what is the solution? Thanks

Under Parallels, you don't have access to accelerated graphics (yet.. they're apparently working on it..) so as such, you can't get Aero, regardless of what the graphics card in your Mac is.

  • 2008 24inch iMac freezing - any suggestions?

    Hello,
My mac keeps shutting down and I'm hoping someone out there can help!  It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been ongoing intermittently for maybe 6 months now.  Basically what will happen is that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes blank.  I have to then hold down the power button on the back to turn it off and then on again.  Since I don’t know what’s causing this, the following may or may not be relevant:
I use it most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular problem.
I was running leopard and wondered if the problem was because I needed to upgrade, but since installing snow leopard the problem is exactly the same.
The computer seems to get hot, especially on the top left corner.
It’s showing that I have 36GB free on the hard drive.
I've been searching online for suggestions but haven't found anything directly relevant.  Could anyone give me some ideas of what  to try?  Is it just getting old or is there something I can do?  Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory:            2 GB

Hmmm, this isn't working out so well.  I tried to install after downloading from Macupdate, and it didn't work properly.  I first saved the zip file, and then unzipped it but couldn't open the file.  Now when I try to delete it, I get a message saying that I can't delete the application because it is open.  When I try to open it, I get a message saying I can't open because it's damaged or incomplete.  Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • IMac screen appears to have smudges under the glass.  They are not on the surface and it doesn't matter what wallpaper is in place.

iMac screen appears to have smudges under the glass along the top of the screen.  They are not on the surface and it doesn't matter what wallpaper is in place.  Anyone else had this happen?

The " glass" front of your iMac is really not glass, at all, but an optically clear polycarbonite (plastic) that a black border painted or possibly "printed" on the backside (to hide the strong magnets that hold this cover on) that has a metal frame glued to the back to which this frame is held in place with very strong magnets.
You use one or two small suction cups or a suction cup from a windshield mounted mobile GPS mount or purchase a small commercial glass cup, that is used to handle bare glass, to get the polycarbonite frame off.
The reason I mention the material is polycarbonite is that you should NOT be using ANY type of retail/commercial window glass cleaners on this front glass or on the LCD screen.
Polycarbonite easily scratches and clouds when using ANY conventional glass cleaning solutions.
You need to use a lint-free, microfiber style cloth dampened in warm water (completely wring the water out of the microfiber cloth to the point cloth is just warm and damp with NO water dripping at all from the cloth) and use this to get the screen and glass don't screen clean.

  • IMac only appears to respond to Cmd-Opt-P-R

I have a 24" aluminium iMac from 2008. Yesterday it swallowed a DVD which made it unhappy; there's a continual (2 second or so cycle) of the drive spinning / stopping / spinning / stopping.
I tried the various procedures for ejecting the disc, (including normal methods within OS X, the command line utility and holding the mouse button on a reboot) without luck. I then tried setting bootcamp to start up the machine as windows to see if that would offer an eject method that worked. Since then, the machine just turns on, makes a chime, and stays on the white / gray screen (with the drive spin / stop in the background).
The only thing that appears to do anything at the moment is holding down Cmd-Opt-P-R on turning on the machine. Other key combinations, such as holding down Shift, or the Opt key, do not appear to do anything.
Suggestions welcome. I'm covered by applecare, but I'm (a) currently snowed in so unable to take it anywhere for a while and (b) would like to recover my data from the harddisc.

Do this only if all else fails. Looks like he's got double stick tape on the card that faces the label side. And if you attempt this, I'd only put the tape on the inside of the card. Somebody here tried this a few weeks ago and it worked.

That's a PRAM Reset. You mean that's the only thing the computer responds to? What happens after doing that?
Try doing an SMC Reset. Shutdown, remove all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, unplug the computer, hold the power button in for five seconds, plug power back in and restart.

  • HT204406 itunes match playlists from imac not appearing on ios devices

I've finally gotten my entire iTunes library onto iTunes Match.  (Be patient folks, it only took 4 weeks for my entire library to load!)
However, the Playlists that I've created on my iMac are not appearing on any of my IOS devices (iPad, iPhone, etc.).
Can anybody help me with what needs to be done on my iPhone and iPad to import my iTunes playlists from my iMac?
    Thanks in advance!

The cause is likely to be a corruption of the iTunes library on the iPhone.  The neatest route is to reset the iPhone to factory condition.
The alternate is to remove the iPhone library files and force it to rebuild them - this is a little more complex but has the upside that you do not need to recreate content on the iPhone, the steps needed are:
    1. Connect iPhone, open iExplorer (or equivalent)
    2. Navigate to iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control\iTunes
    3. Delete these 3 files:
              MediaLibrary.sqllitedb
              MediaLibrary.sqllitedb-shm
              MediaLibrary.sqllitedb-wal
    4. Hard reboot the iPhone (home button + sleep/wake button, hold until you see the apple logo)
Hope that these will work for you - the simplest alternates is here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22457142#22457142

  • Why does the new photo app not allow all the photos on my iMac to appear on iPhone and iPad?

Imac with OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
New Photo App has over 9000 photos but only 180 or so appear on iPhone and iPad. Why. I have sufficient iCloud storage.

How did you import the photos?
Are the missing photos perhaps referenced? Then they cannot upload to iCloud.
You can check with a smart album, if you have any photos in the library, that cannot upload to iCloud.
