24p and 29.97 in a 29.97 timeline?

I have an edited film that was shot in 24p non advanced. Half the clips were captured at 29.97fps and the other half were captured at 23.97fps. The edit is complete and my sound mix has been done in protools. When the film is played back some of the clips are jagged like with movement, this I am assuming is because they should have been captured at 29.97. My question is, is there any way to get those 24p clips to 29.97 without screwing up my timeline and throwing the whole sound mix out of synch? When I try recapturing anything fc says I have timecode breaks, even when i start a new project and try to capture. This is a very important project, and I have a feeling I am out of luck.

How were your 24p clips captured?
You'll need to go back into Cinema Tools and add the pulldown back if it was really taken out.
You using a DVX?

  • Compressor, 24p, and 2-pass acting really weird

I am having a heck of a time using Compressor (1.2.1) with 24p footage and 2-pass. I encode it, then DVDSP gives me a "bit rate too high" error. To make a long story short, if I go into Finder and preview the MPEG movie, at the end the last part repeats. Also if I scroll through the clip in DVDSP, it does the same thing. The lengh reflects the extra data. It doesn't happen if I do 1-pass, it seems to be tied to 24p and 2-pass encoding. Some clips work fine; it seems to be mostly consistent with reference movies (as opposed to exporting self-contained), and I have just been exporting self-contained movies but now it seems that is not giving me consistent success.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I re-installed FCP and Compressor to no avail.

I think I discovered what is happening........ yikes......
Ok, I was doing re-compression of movies that I had already done. So I thought I was overwriting the files, right? Well, I had one clip that changed dramatically, and at the end of the clip it had a hint of the end of the previous version. Then it hit me, it's not deleting the old file, it's just writing over the old file - but anything that's left stays there. That has to be what it is...

  • 24p and Final Cut

If you've shot in 24p and then want to ingest via the Canon GL2 because the original camera is not available-- is that possible as long as you adjust your settings within FCP?

It doesn't matter what sort of camera you use to
capture, as long as it is miniDV.
let's not go this far. most minidv devices i would say it is safe to capture 24p and leave all the data intact. i own a jvc vtr that was designed and made before the dvx100 was most likely even thought of. this tape machine will not transfer pulldown flag data. it does matter what sort of device one uses.

  • 24p and After Effects...

So I'm thinking about buying the hv30 for some awesome progressive 24p video. However, I use FCE4 to edit my projects and thus have run into a problem, as FCE does not support true 24p (only FCP does). I was wondering; could I import raw footage into AE, change it to true 24p and then render it out; followed by bringing the render in to FCE to edit? Or will I run into the same problems regardless?
I'm quite new to 24p and would love some extra insight as well. I've read a few wikipedia articles on it but I'm still unclear with the 'pulldown' and exactly how it converts to 60i or vice versa.

Yes, if you do a full conversion of 24p to 30i in AE, there's no reason why FCE won't read the file as such. But note that editing the converted 30i footage in FCE will require true interlaced monitoring to ensure you don't cut on a mixed-field frame, as the FCE/FCP canvas does not display true two-field images.
I recommend as often as possible that you are much better off shooting at 30i and down-converting to 24p in software (Magic Bullet, for example), rather than the other way around. Best of both worlds, more control, more temporal information captured.
And maybe off topic, but a really great article about the merits of 24p (and other stuff) here:

  • Differences between SF 300-24P and SF 300-24MP??

    Hello all,
    First post here, very excited!
On to my question as I cannot seem to find specifics on this.
Besides the MP having support for PoE+, does the 24P have a full 24-port PoE budget or only 12 ports at a time?
What other differences between the two.
I currently have 10 APs plugged into a SF 300-24P and want to add 10 more. PoE consumption is around 3500mW for each AP.
    Thanks,
    Pasquale

Hi and welcome to the forum.
According to the data sheet, all 24 ports support POE.
have a look at table-1 in this link (under power over Ethernet) section:

  • Problems when exporting to AVI, firts gave me "unknown error compiling movie" and then just exports small parts of timeline, I have to export the different parts, put it back in a timeline and then I can export it complete...it was working fine, HELP!!!

I proyect is 30 minutes long, im using only AVI files, no mpegs or anything, when I tried to used the encoder because it gave me the message "Failed to return a video frame", but i checked, started the proyect over...and there is no empty frame or anything....Please help!!!!!

The Failed to Return Video Frame error is often associated with a gap between Clips in the Timeline.
Zoom your Timeline view to max horizontal, hit Home and then PageDn repeatedly. Watch the CTI and also watch for any visible gap. The CTI should jump directly to the next Clip (be careful, as it will also include any Clip on any other Video Track, or Audio Track). If it seems to "hiccup," or "jutter," you have likely found your gap.Though it can only be as small as 1 frame, even with the Timeline zoomed in to max, they can be difficult to see.
Close the gap, and do not create another along the Timeline by doing so. Test your Export without the gaps, and see if it completes.
Good luck, and be sure to watch closely and carefully, as gaps can be tough to spot.

T4i... lousy SD video... has anyone used SD and had final edit look ok. on timeline its a disaster. cell phone does better video.. im a pro video type and at this point may return cam and wait for a more capable eos.. like a mirrorless 60d...

    Speedorms,
I would like to help determine what is causing this.
What exactly are you seeing that is poor quality in the video from your EOS Rebel T4i?
What are you using to edit your video?
What settings are you using to edit the video?
When you refer to SD, are you referring to the card in the camera or Standard Definition video?
If you prefer a mirrorless design, we do have the new EOS M.  You may want to take a look at that model to see if it has the features you are looking for.
If this is a time sensitive-matter, additional support options are available at Contact Us.

  • Everytime I copy and paste my proj on a new timeline, my soundtracks move around and blend and it takes days to fix. Happens everytime

Does anyone know how to keep sound tracks from shifting around when cutting and pasting projects onto new timelines?

Hi, and thanks. I select an entire timeline, make a copy, paste it on a new timeline so I can try a different edit and scroll between tabs. But certain tracks of sound migrate when I do this, and I am not sure what I'm doing wrong or if this is something I shouldn't be doing, if there's a better solution.

  • P2 1080i/24p and CS3

Started a DVCPRO HD 1080i/24p project. Imported P2 mxf files shot in 1080i/24p. Timeline needs rendering when mxf is placed on timeline.
Why does this happen? Every other native P2 project for DVCPRO HD does not require rendering. ex, 720/60 etc.
CS4 does not behave this way in the trial I downloaded.

    I noticed the same issue while running some tests today. I shot 6 x 30 second clips to p2. 1080i 24p, 1080i 24pa, 720p 24p, 702p 24pn, DVCPro 50 480i 24pa, DVCPro 50 480i 24p. I created 3 sequences, one for each of the resolutions.
On the 1080i sequence the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. Same thing for the DVCPro 50, the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. None of the 720 clips required rendering and neither of those were shot in 24p advance.
I am very interested to find out why this is happening.

  • Canon Vixia HF100 24p and Final Cut Pro 7

    Hello all,
Just got the HF100 and Final Cut Pro 7. New to both. My plan is to shoot everything at 1920x1080 @24p. I've heard though, that the 24p on this camera has 3/2 inserted to make it 60i. My goal is to remove the 3/2 and do all editing and fx at 24p so I can have a universal master that I can then convert to various formats (Bu-Ray, DVD, web, etc., but will not ever go to tape). What is a good workflow/settings for this? Also one possible concern is disk space (so multiple codec suggestions would be great), but may be able overcome disk space if necessary. Again, I'm completely new to final cut (I do have some post experience, but am clueless to final cut right now). A long question, I know. Thank you in advance.

    ebrunoski,
Welcome to FCP 7 and to Canon AVCHD camcorders. I was in your shoes a couple of weeks ago, as I have a Canon HF11 and FCS 3 myself.
I also try to film and edit everything in 24p with my Canon and my recommendation would be to do exactly as suggested in this Apple tutorial and using Compressor:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410
What it essentially teaches you is to (1) log and transfer your Canon 24p wrapped in 60i files, (2) make them "true" 24p in Compressor, and (3) use them back in FCP 7. Once the files have been compressed into 24p you can get rid of the ones you had logged and transferred in their 60i wrappers and use only the resulting 24p files.
Yes, it's an extra step in the process, but it's one efficient way of doing it.
    Works for me!

  • 24P and sound from Mbox

when my 24p video is digitized, the browser shows the duration in 00:03:22:12 format - meaning the : is all NON DROP FRAME. When I imported the audio (recorded on an Mbox from the shoot as back up sound) it came in the 00:03:22;12 format - is DROP FRAME. so when I marry the two together (exporting quicktime movie uncompressed) the new file's timecode is DROP FRAME - will this cause a problem when I go to output the entire movie? Is this something I should be worried about? What I do know is that the audio and the video are in sync - so I can't change the duration of something to make it seem NON DROP. I have some audio from the DV tape and now some audio from the MBox so I don't know if I can use it not that it looks like I have both drop and non drop clips.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I did the search and at the moment the forget is only in the
MIAW(s) - I have 2 and the same happens with both. As soon as I
open the MIAW the sound in main movie stops.
Is there a better place to put the play sound from than in
the startMovie script. On stopMovie I have the sound.stop() and
    should add forget MIAW
    Thank you for your help.

  • Stacked SF500-24P and routing question

I'm looking for a stackable L3 switch which can do routing and with PoE and I think the SF500-24P is just right for me but have a question.
Is a stack of 2 of these switches seen as 1 device with 1 outside ip address per VLAN by devices that have this stack as the default gateway? or is something like VRRP active between the 2 stack switches and they both have their own ip address?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jasper

That is correct.  The entire stack seen as one device.  once the switches are stacked, there is no need for VRRP, HSRP, etc.. It is all one switch with one IP for management.

  • Combining 16:9, 24p and standard NTSC in FCE

Please forgive the newbie ignorance, but I seem to have gotten myself into a severe predicament with no practical way out. Here's the situation:
In a rush of naive enthusiasm, a desire to NOT indulge my usual tendency toward perfectionistic procrastination paralysis, encouragement by others—including experienced advisors, albeit one with Windows/Avid-only experience and the other a successful, working director/screenplay writer with a minimal understanding of technical issues—and finally, getting snowed by glowing sales brochures with hidden fine print that glossed over critical compatibility issues, I borrowed a s-load of money and launched my documentary by jumping out of a plane with the following parachute:
    1) Essential outdoor footage (rushed to take advantage of good summer weather) shot at 24p in true 16:9 on a borrowed Canon XL2.
    2) Equally essential indoor footage (and pretty much all remaining future footage) shot in standard NTSC (29.97i? 4:3) on my Canon GL2.
    3) An aging dual 500 G4 that's been expensively brought up to minimal Final Cut Express standards through a series of hundred bucks here, several hundred bucks there steps. (I probably could've bought a new Mac for what I've spent on techno-duct tape for the old!)
    4) A desperate hope that I might find some way to get 1-3 to work together before I hit a rapidly enlarging terra firma!
Lest you think I'm totally nuts, let me say in my defense that I have been experimenting with post-production procedures along the way—first with iMovie until it became obvious it wouldn't do the effects I wanted and now with FCE, which will handle the minimal fancy-schmancy stuff my doc needs. But now based on my fitfully improving understanding of the technical constraints, I believe I've been misled by "false" iMovie and FCE WYSIWYG images that implied I could meld my XL2 and GL2 footage without problem.
To be more specific, I was able to successfully capture the XL2 footage in iMovie through my GL2, or at least I thought I was. I assumed the data, being digital and all, would capture correctly regardless of camera. When I could see it squished horizontally in 4:3 on my monitor, I assumed it had transferred correctly and could then be manipulated however I wanted. After I got FCE, I seemed to be able to capture the two kinds of footage and even put them together (of course, with corresponding letter- and pillar-boxing), but am now thinking I've got a mess underneath what I see on screen.
All of which is to ask, Is there any practical way to solve my problem? My piggy bank is down to its last few pennies, and short of winning the lottery, my immediate possibility of getting more cash is nil. My quixotic goal is to turn this mess into a real (24p, 16:9) movie. (If I can get them combined, I plan to use the discrepancy in quality between the two kinds of footage as an "intentional" effect).
Three other questions: After reading another discussion thread, I got JES Deinterlacer to see if it could successfully convert my NTSC to widescreen 24p. The small clip I used was glacially slow to convert, which is frustrating but could be an acceptable workaround except that it appears the result is severely degraded (which makes sense since the file size is 10% of the original). My original thought was to crop the top and bottom of the 4:3 to fit it in with the 16:9 (instead of stretch it) and have the resulting increasing contrast in resolution be part of the inside/outside "effect." Can JES, or something else, solve my conversion problem? If so, will FCE be able to handle the result?
Second thing is one of my original XL2 tapes was lost so I took my iMovie version and put it back on tape through my GL2. Has this been degraded from the original? What is happening to the 24p, 16:9 data as it goes back and forth from camera to hard drive through iMovie and FCE.
Third is I found several threads that warn specifically against capturing from a Canon camera to a firewire hard drive. I seem to have had no problem so far, but is there something corrupt underneath that I can't see?
Hoping this long post is not too annoying (maybe my mistakes can help others avoid similar ones?) and that there's a miracle out there that'll keep me from crashing and burning in a fireball
    Many thanks, Chris

"There is not quality degradation for digital content upon printing to tape or copy, even from a iMovie version. DV is a already compressed digital material, edited in the compressed format, so you can go far beyond 20 generations of copy without significant degradation.
"It's not exactly the same thing with HDV (because there is a conversion by Apple Intermediate Codec at each capture/print process)."
Thanks, Michel. I guess I'm still confused about the gist of the capture process, which seems to be what led me into this mess in the first place. I understand that the raw data is digital and that it won't degrade if it's copied, which is what I thought capturing was in essence. But if DV capture is standardized, what—if it's not some kind of codec-translation filter—makes the resulting media files different depending upon which application (and camera?) is used. (I know cameras can record differently—thus my XL2/GL2 discrepancy—but do they also behave differently in the capture process?)
The other explanation I can think of for the differences in capturing between iMovie, FCE, and FCP is that Apple has simply restricted the aspect ratios and frame rates each app handles as part of the justification for differing prices. I had thought they could each accept the same raw footage but what they did with it afterwards was increasingly sophisticated and therefore costly.
Live and spend lots of money to learn!

  • Capturing 24p, and have to render every clip.

Hi all. Thanks for your time. After reading all the 24p articles in here, I thought I had it straight: I shot 24p normal (16:9) on an xl2, and captured it on FCP 4.5 using the "DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic" setting for Capture as well as for the Sequence Preset. However, I still have to render (red line) ever time I bring a clip into the timeline! What am I doing wrong?? Please someone help, and thank you for your time.

You shooting in PAL land? You have a PAL camera????
Stating the obvious, but thought I'd get that out of the way...
Do us a favor... find the item properties window for the CAPTURED clips and read it down for us.
