2nd thunderbolt port has limited resolution

Hi, I've got a late 2013 15" retina with a discrete graphics card. For some reason, when I connect external monitors to the 2nd thunderbolt port (the one closest to the USB port). I can't get resolution greater than 1920*1080 on an external monitor (Dell U2713HM). On the other port I get a full 2650x1440. Is this a known problem that I've just discovered?
It happens with both minidisplayport to displayport, and minidisplayport to DVI connectors.
I've tried to sort things out with switchResX, but at 2650x1440 it just squeezes the display with black bars at the top and bottom.
any ideas or help would be great.
Thank you

same laptop, i can get native resolution on 2 apple 27 displays so unsure why you're not able to
try both pram and smc resets and test again
also is it detecting both displays as monitors or TVs?

can i connect my sony smart TV via thunderbolt port for better resolution.

You can connect the TV via the Thunderbolt port. However if the result is "better resolution" would depend on what resolution you have now (I'm guessing you mean with the HDMI adapter?)
I'm myself connecting the Mini Mac with a Thunderbolt->VGA adapter to my TV and get full 1920x1080 resolution.
Have you checked your Display settings? Make sure mirroring is off, then check what resolutions you can get on the current connection.
Please return with some more data.

  • Forgets my display arrangement on 2nd  thunderbolt port

I have a new MBP retina and  I am getting some strange display issues.  I have 2 thunderbolt displays and also use the laptop display. When I use the second thunderbolt port my display configuration isnt the same as the other port.  I fix one and then the other is messed up.   Does anyone know how I can fix this?

  • Is the "Thunderbolt Port" the exact same thing as the "MiniDisplay Port"?

All i want to do is connect my laptop to my TV however it doesn't have an HDMI port on this macbook pro. I have a thunderbolt port has a lihghtening pic next to it and i search for cables but all i get are MINI DISPLAY PORTS??? Are these one in the same???

Thunderbolt is a port that allows you to transfer audio, video and data, and Mini DisplayPort allows you to transfer video and audio. Also, they use the same port, so Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort.
You need to buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. Image will show up on your TV after connecting your Mac to it.

Hi I have got one of the brand new iMac's with thunderbolt ports - what cable do I need to connect my Imac to a 2nd display either VGA or DVI - also is there a budget version about as well as I am sure its going to cost a lot from the apple store

Thanks I understand that I need another cable and have that from when I connected my old PC to the 2nd monitor.

I just dont want to waste more money on a cable that says its for an imac to 2nd screen and find it doesnt fit
For info my iMAC is the latest version (27" with the 2 thunderbolt connections and 1 firewire)

By the way, I have tried shutting of the display switching in the power settings.  That was basically the only real answer I found anywhere.  It didn't work.

  • Has anyone tried driving two external monitors (3 total displays) on the iMac 2011 through the thunderbolt ports on Windows 7 Bootcamp?

I would love to purchase an iMac 2011 with the Thunderbolt ports, but I need to occasionally boot to Windows 7 Bootcamp.
I imagine this will work in general... but has anyone tried driving two external monitors using the Thunderbolt ports in Windows 7 Bootcamp?
    Thanks in advance!

  • I have 2 iMacs, one has a thunderbolt port and the other has a mini display port. Would it be possible to use one as an extension of the other? If so what cable would I need.

    Hi,
As the title of the thread says. I have an older iMac with a mini display port and a newer iMac with a thunderbolt port. Would it be possible so that the older iMac is an extension of my new iMac. The reason for this is because logic x can be a abit clustered on one screen.
    Thanks

If you'll be using the 2010 iMac as the display, a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
It's not possible to use the 2011 iMac as the display through Target Display mode in that configuration.

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

  • Macbook Pro 15" with two 27"+ high res. monitor trough thunderbolt port

    Hi all,
I just looking for a solution, to make it work: With a thunderbolt port MB Pro 15" (2011-eraly, 2011 late, 2012 mid NOT RETINA version), which has only one thunderbolt port. How its possible to plug two (min. 2560x1440) high resolution NOT APPLE Display (daisy chain). I got now one Dell 3011 and I plan to plug a second one. BUT how?
It is any HUB or something like that, which create from the one thunderbolt port »» two mini or standard diplay port, or dual DVI, so two separate connector which can handle the high resolution?
I saw lot of solution up to 1920x1200 (dualhead2go, etc.), but nowhere found any idea to handle with a MB Pro 15" thunderbolt version multiple (dual) external HIGH Resolution monitor 27-30" (2560x1440, or 2560x1600).

Try Googling "macbook pro thunderbolt dual display adapter" - there are a number of hits (even a YouTube video). See if you can find what might work best for you. I'm sure that someone around here has acheived this - they're jut not chiming in at the moment. Also check with OWC and see if they have anything. You can call them at 1.800.275.4576.
    Good luck,

  • My thunderbolt port seems broken - have to re insert on startup every time

Just bought neew Mac Mini. Using Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor from Apple. But every time I start up, I am getting a 'no input' message on my monitor and only by pulling out the cable from the thunderbolt port and re inserting do I get a resoloution.
    Anyone else had simular?

Hi Skelbob, I have a similar problem whenever I restart or shut down my Mac Mini using the same adapter.  The only difference in my case is that I do get display but it has a slight vertical wavy distortion which goes away if I unplug and re plug the thunderbolt connection.  There is no problem using an HDMI connection, but the graphic resolution is not as good as the VGA.  I have a very high spec Mini and I am not pleased about this, but have founf no solution to it.  Let me know if you have any success.

  • I need three thunderbolt ports, will a hub work?

Hello and thank you for reading this!
I just received the newest MBP for work, but it only has two thunderbolt ports. We need three (2 for two external monitors using DVI to thunderbolt, 1 for hardwire ethernet). We saw a few options on amazon but aren't sure if they would work or if there was a separate solution to do this. I would assume HDMI would come into the picture but we would like to avoid using that if we can.
    Much appreciated.

I have a MBPro mid 2013 with 1 Thunderbolt port. Just bought a Mac monitor and want to daisy chain a PC monitor to it. Use a Mini DVI to VGA adapter from MBP to PC monitor. How do I daisy chain the 2 monitors?

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.
