3.1 seriously sluggish

Safari 3.1 is running slowly on my mac. Most any mouse action causes the beach ball to spin for 15 to 30 seconds. It happens when typing too. I have cleared the cache, and tried closing other apps. Firefox works just fine. Is it possible to "downgrade" to the previous version?

Well I'm still testing, but so far still looks crap to me.
It seems the opening animation is still horrible, but on most apps the second time you open an app (if it is already loaded) its smooth. This tells me when you first hit an app that it's loading is interfering with the animation. (never did this before 4.3)
The ipod app is still glitchy animation wise, and settings still has a second or so pause before appearing.
The camera app openeing speed seems to have improved a little though, but the double tap to reveal background tasks is totally inconsistant. (pause before doing anything, then glitchy crappy animation on screen move up).
Ultimately, I think that this is just a case of apple dumping the 3gs, and 'pushing' people to get a more powerful iphone (4 or even 5 later this year). The update doesn't even mention 3gs stability in the release notes, so Apple either basically have their head in the sand, or as I expect, just don't give a crap.
Will test some more, but this isn't looking good.

  • How to STOP Lion from reconnecting a shared Windows drive?

There's a Windows shared network drive I connect to at work on my 13.3" MacBook Pro (OS X Lion 10.7.3, Core i7, 8 GB RAM), and it appears under Finder's SHARED sidebar heading. In fact, it automatically connects any time a new Finder window is created...even if I just ejected it seconds earlier. This causes serious sluggishness or even unresponsiveness from Finder when I'm away from work (like using Wi-Fi at home), because I think Finder is trying to reconnect the drive again.
It's not under one of my user account login items, and even when I delete its password access from Keychain, its entry reappears in Keychain when I open another Finder window!
How can I stop this from happening? Any advice is appreciated. I've clicked and poked all around Finder window settings, and perhaps my eyes have glazed over to where I'm missing something obvious.

That only happens if Firefox isn't able to create or update the profiles.ini file for some reason.

  • System preferences hangs

installed ML, but system preferences hangs so can't change any preferences. It opens the icon, but the window never appears.
    I have re-installed - but same happens
moreover, I can't get it to restart without forcing a quit by turning on/off button (it hangs on the blank 'light grey' screen)
I have checked repair permissions, no problem there.

    On my MacPro:
My problem began with a nearly non-functioning Mail program after upgrade to OS M Lion, which is detailed in my post a few days ago. After trying everything I could to resolve it unsuccessfully, (rebuild directory structure, fix permissions, trash preferences for iCloud apps, zap PRAM, and several other efforts, including a reinstall of M Lion from recovery drive) I contacted Apple Support and ended up on the phone with a rep.  We set-up remote access so he could see the Mail hang-up everytime I attempted to fill in the outgoing email address field in a new message window (spinning ball) - it took up to 30 sec for each letter I typed to appear and overall about 2-3 minutes to completely populate the field with the address. All other Mail functions were working better, but seriously sluggish.  We tried disabling each email account, one by one to see if another account was causing the problem (my primary account is a .me address).  No problem with other accounts.  Then the unexpected happened.  He asked me to open Safari and log into iCloud so we could see if Mail was working via the web.  Upon login, the icons for all the iCloud applications appeared with completely corrupted text labels under each icon...  each was a mix of letters and symbols stacked on top of each other.  It appeared that my entire iCloud account might be corrupted. However, testing the same login via Firefox worked just fine, so the issue was narrowing to iCloud and interaction between the default apps between this computer and iCloud via Safari.  We then attempted to open Contacts from Launch Pad on HD - It opened, but none of my contacts were there.  Further indication of iCloud account corruption. Since I am able to access and use all iCloud features and apps on my MacBook Pro, an early assumption is that the OS upgrade to Mountain Lion on my MacPro may have been severely corrupted.  Before going so far as to do a clean install of M Lion, we installed a Data Capture program and I ran through the attempts to set-up and send a new email while it captured all system activitiy in that process.  This data and the screen captures obtained during this session have now been sent up to Apple OS engineers to dig into and figure out why, and how a corruption of the ML install could have occured. I have agreed not to do a 'clean install' of the OS until the engineers get back to me as they may need to run more remote diagnostics on this computer to narrow it down to the actual cause.... this, so that a fix can be implemented before countless other computers are effected.  I am scheduled to hear back form them today or on Monday and I will post the results here. They seem quite busy with bug fixing right now.  The toys and features of Lion and M Lion are very cool, but I am seriously beginning to miss the speed and reliability of Leapord/Snow Leopard.... even Tiger - I fired up my old G5 tower with Leopard ... it is amazing just how fast and solid it is compared to these new OS builds that feel and look more like virtual machines than a real Mac OS.   I hope all these diagnostics and interaction with senior engineers provide some solid solutions soon.

  • IPad 3 sluggish in the photos app

I'm still getting to know my new iPad, but one thing I didn't expect to experience with a fresh install on a new iPad was the photos app struggling.
Generally it feels a bit sluggish and stalling in a few views, but really oddly it just practically grinds to a halt when trying to scroll through the event view.
Oddly it only does this near the top of the list of events, after a while it starts to behave normally. I'm guessing it's down to some files involved or perhaps just a general corruption somewhere. Still the event view should be fairly simplistic, much fewer items than the normal photos, and only showing a handful of thumbnails per event, if not mostly one thumbnail as they sit on top of each other.
I've made a video of the iPad 3 and iPad 2 working on the same photo set, about 5000 photos, roughly 10gig on the iPad 3.
You can see the video here
    http://vimeo.com/38816628
Anyone else experience this, or get to the bottom of it... I will try to selectively remove items, be nice if I could force iTunes to re-shrink the files on my mac ready for syncing back on the pad in case something went wrong there.
    Cheers

    jim,
You are not alone! I'm equally dissappointed with the overall responsiveness of the iPad3. I assume it's do to the current code (additional code implemented to add dictation to the iPad3, pixel resolution, etc.) Nonetheless, several applications on the iPad3 are slow to respond. For instance, OliveTree BibleReader lags when navigating to different books and hangs for about 2 seconds when you go from Vertical to Horizontal.
The facebook application has also been extremely unresponsive. I still have my iPad 2 and I'm seriously considering the option to return the iPad3 because of the "overall" user experience. I really enjoy the crispier text, but only a few applications have been updated to make use of the resolution and the sluggishness of the iPad3 outweighs the benefits of the resolution.

  • PDF FORM RATHER SLOW and SLUGGISH

    Hey all.
I am making a PDF form in Acrobat 9 with something like 100 fields. I am running basic javascript validation routines on it. The end result is a rather sluggish PDF. My PC has an AMD Athlon in it. More then good enough I would think for a simple form. However, when clicking on the radio buttons, which is where I placed a bunch of validation and conditions to calculate values and hide/make visible some fields, make other fields required. Stuff like that, the transitions between the old view and the new view, takes up to 4 or 5 seconds. This seems like an incredibly long time. Does anyone haev any advice?
    Thanks!
    Bret

I have included a copy of the script I am running. I have changed field names to protect the innocent and such. :)
So this is a pretty simple script. I simply click on the radio button that this script is attached to on a "Mouse Down" event to run a Javascript and it seriously takes 4 seconds for the fields to show.

  • SERIOUS lag issues with Intel iMac

    Hello everyone,
I'm pretty frustrated right now. I've been having this serious lag issue with my new iMac for the past few days. I think it may have started after I ran the last security update.
    What happens:
When switching between apps, the system will hang for 1-3 seconds between doing anything. This includes typing, mouse requests, etc. It's VERY frustrating. I have activity monitor open currently, and I am seeing both Safari and SystemUIServer hogging up the CPU resources like CRAZY. I've even seen Safari recently give a CPU usage of 120%, right before I loaded this webpage. tis isn't just centralized to Safari too.... I have the following apps running:
    Adium 0.89.1
    FoireFox 1.5.0.8
    Safari
    Activity Monitor
    My Memory stats currently are:
    175MB Wired
    708MB Active
    618MB Inactive
    1.47GB Used
There should be no reason I'm getting these lags with just two web browsers and a chat client open.
Has anyone else expierenced the lags?? Any suggestions? I'm almost ready to reinstall OS X and not run the last security update. Thanks

    Hello Matthew
Are you running any maintenance scripts on a regular basis?
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
I would manually run this script from The X Lab, and my load times would improve greatly. The problem was, I would forget to run them untill I noticed web pages loading slow or iTunes and iPhoto taking for ever. It wasn't untill someone here in discussions suggested Anacron that I saw the light. WOW what a difference Anacron has been making in my overall system speed. My iMac has not been shutdown for 11days 5hrs 34mins (sleep or use only) and opening new App's, switching App's and web pages load as fast or faster than after a fresh start up. If your system is operating properly and you are having only what seems to be a slow or sluggish issue Anacron will make a difference.

  • Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) sluggish and crashes during Playback

    Issue:
Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) extremely sluggish and crashes during Playback. My video won't play at all unless I render (which is no problem). I render all my clips and attempt to play it back. It usually will allow me to watch it the first time around. After that, the program freezes up or becomes extremely sluggish. I have even had a blank green screen pop up on my playback monitor. Sometimes the program will generate the message "A Serious Error has occurred" and will shut down. Other times, the program just locks up. I am not running any other programs except email.
    Here is what I've tried:
    Cleared all my cache files
Set my Mercury Playback set to "Software only"
Restarted the program and computer after doing the above.
Made sure I had no RGB Curves as an effect (as I did see that was an issue from other threads)
    Deleted all unused footage
Deleted all render files and re-rendered everything.
I am editing footage that requires Ultra Key. I am using a Three-Way Color Corrector. My video isn't even 1 minute long, so I would think it would be easy to render and playback.
Here is what I am working on (I know I need an upgrade - was hoping to after I finished this client's project):

  • Resizing JFrame is Sluggish on 1.6.0_10 under (at least) Vista

    Hello,
My JFrame takes about 10-30 ms to repaint. Yet on Vista and u10 the resizing of the JFrame is very sluggish. The window decorations themselves are updated nice and fast, but the content doesn't keep up at all. If I continuously resize the window it can be several seconds until the content of the window is updated.
Now for something that is harder to explain, but I'll try.. If I keep resizing the window in the smaller sizes (like below 200x200 pixels) the update rate is getting better and I can resize the window at larger sizes with decent update frequencies.. For a while.. But after a few seconds with resizing in the larger sizes (like 1000x800) the update rate goes down again and the content keeps lagging as bad as it did before.
I guess there's some algo that repaints the content depending on how long time the last couple of repaints took? Well, the problem is that that algo seems to be very broken in 1.6.0_10... If I run the same test app in 1.6.0_07 everything works fine.. Same on the Mac, which is by far the platform that feels fastest, even thought the actual painting takes longer...
Now, this is NOT because of the actual painting takes time. I have tested with just a small fillRect and the result is basically the same.
The problem here is that u10 should be faster (and some of the gfx is now really fast, kudos Swing/Java2D-guys!) but the GUI now feels very sluggish due to this "bug".
So... Does anyone know how to increase or force the update rate of the content or is this a plain bug that is in serious need to get fixed?
    Cheers,
    Mikael Grev

    Sure, NP.
A test case doesn't get simpler than this I think. :)
Sluggish under 1.6.0_10 and pretty good under 1.6.0_07.
A have a two-screen setup on Vista using my Macbook Pro 2,4GHz, 4GB memory. External screen is a 30" Cinema Display.

  • Motion 4 is sluggish.  No preferences to trash

    Hello,
Probably somewhat of a beginner's question here but I need a little guidance.   Motion's been very sluggish of late.  Even straightforward operations with a few layers and no serious animation move along at a snail's pace, significantly slower than what I'm used to.  I've never trashed the preferences so I thought it might be worth a try.  But there was no com.apple.motionapp.plist file to be found.  Is that unusual?  Could it hiding out somewhere?
    Jagr

I don't have that file only motionapp.plist and motionapp.LSSharedFileList.plist. There should be no problem deleting it also, but I would not empty the trash until you confirm Motion rebuilds it after relaunch. You can download preference manager from Digital Rebellion, it's free, and use it to delete your motion prefs.

  • My Macbook Pro is Infected, Seriously! Please Help!

I paid 4000$ for my macbook and it was working fine for a year. Now my internet is incredibly slow and sluggish. To load a single web page takes literally 5 minutes wirelessly but still sluggish when plugged up with the ethernet cable. There are popups that are displayed in my browsers firefox and Safari that say "This is not a Joke you are a winner" and prompts me about a Dell notebook I had won. It then redirects me to some adserving site and mentions FreeZinger in the fineprint. Something is going on because I have downloaded and ran multiple virus and DNS changer scans, iAntivirus, securemac, and etc. At first I thought this was a minor problem but its still there. I ran sudo through the terminal and nothing came up. My internet was blazing fast but now is slow no matter where I use it, whether at school, home or work. Please help ASAP because I think my computer needs some serious debugging. Dont tell me I am one of the first to get a virus on a mac. If I need to purchase some insurance and send my mac in please let me know. Any help at all with this issue is greatly appreciated.

"I paid _*4000$*_ for my macbook"
Then you were ripped off. The latest top model cost $2,799.00
"There are popups that are displayed in my browsers firefox and Safari that say "This is not a Joke you are a winner" and prompts me about a Dell notebook I had won."
Go into your browsers preferences & select the +"Block Pop-Up Windows"+ (or something similar) setting.
"I have downloaded and ran multiple virus and DNS changer scans, iAntivirus, securemac, and etc."
Uninstall them all. Not needed for Macs. There are no known viruses for OS X.
If you want to feel safe from +trojans+ download ClamX which is a free download from their website, Versiontracker & MacUpdate.
"Dont tell me I am one of the first to get a virus on a mac."
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ and repair permissions from your software install DVD.
How much HD space do you have left?

  • Sluggish operation

    Sluggish operation
I've noticed the iPhone operation gets sluggish and the animations (sliding lock, zoom, etc) get slowed down over time.
A reboot by menu + lock button will solve this, but rebooting a phone everyday not practical and normal thing to do.
I believe it's most likely because of RAM space eaten up by running multiple applications. Blackberry has similar problem, but you can select background applications and quite them to release RAM space.
Are there any tips to prevent / release sluggishness without rebooting??

This was one of the reasons why I decided to give the iphone a serious look becuase I was tired of rebooting my windows treo 2 or 3 times a day... sometimes because it would just hang, or other times becuas it was becoming sluggish and a reboot was the best route to snapping it back to life.
I know these "smart" phones are closer to small computers, but if they are competing in the phone market they need to demonstrate competitive reliability.
Well, I guess thats not a given, otherwise Windows wouldnt have contributed to the collapse of reliable mainframes with the same thought that a reboot here and there was no biggie.
    Oh well...

  • Seriously slow 3G speeds

Hello, I'm writing to inquire about some seriously slow 3G speeds.  Have been having problems with sluggishness downloading apps on my android phone (EDIT: Original Motorola Droid) from the market so me and a friend got together to do some tests.  He is on AT&T and has a Nexus One android phone.  We tested multiple locations around the state of SC, in every situation even though I had stronger signal strength (in each test I was between -73 and -86db signal he was between -88 and -96) he always had faster download speeds.  And not just slightly faster, he obliterated my speeds.  In one locaiton, I had -73db signal, he had -94db, my download speed over 5 tests averaged 40kbs, his average 1842kbs.  Almost all the test results are like this the closest test was when I averaged 621kbs over 5 tests, and he averaged 1402kbs.  My average over all tests (50 tests in 10 different locations in sc, 5 tests per location) was 223kbs, his was 1561kbs.
Is this the norm for verizon's 3G speeds?  If so I may have to strongly consider opening an AT&T account.
EDIT: Added phone type, verizon is my service provider obviously.
Also to note, all speed testing was done using the SpeedTest.net application available in the market.  We always used the Columbia, SC server for consistency.

I didn't know what PRL was but looked it up and found it, it shows 30058, I called *228 and did the roaming update to make sure it was up to date, and it did not change so assuming that is the most rescent version for my area.
Researching on the net some it looks like this is an Alltel PRL version.  This is probably due to the fact that I was with Alltel before it merged with Verizon and have not converted to a verizon package.
I downloaded that Real Signal app, where I'm at atm my EVDO signal is -3.
    Speedtest.net down results
    Columbia, SC: 147kbps
    Sumter, SC: 168kbps
    Atlanta, GA: 236kbps
    Charlotte, NC: 223kbps
    Average: 193.5kbps
We found the issue. You have an Alltel PRL. I have one also, I think it is 40043. Until the area is combined you will have issues. My SID is now 21 which is a combined SID. So here my phone looks for a Verizon or Alltel tower as level one. With a Smartphone you should not have a 3xxxx PRL.
Once I leave this area and got to wherre there is not a combined area, my phone looks for an Alltel tower first, then a Verizon tower.

  • Dock Rather Sluggish?

    Hi There,
Is anyone else's dock acting rather sluggish? The magnification effect seems rather jerky on my mac. Not to mention I'm finding a whole lot of little bugs in Leopard, when combined, cause some serious issues. My system just crashed a bit ago because I got an IM at the exact same time Mail started checking for mail.
Also, is anyone else noticing some really high CPU usage from some strange processes in activity monitor?
    - Majicman

The dock is in fact, sluggish. I've been playing around with it since I've installed. In fact, I've installed Leopard twice already. First was an upgrade, and a second time as an erase and install, in an attempt to fix the docks poor animation. Both magnification, and the genie effect for minimizing are both rather poor; after doing much looking around on various forums, I've noticed a trend. It seems to happen mostly on machines running either nvidia chipsets, or the gma 950; although I could be wrong. But to me, it seems that these types of graphics adapters need some sort of update or tweak, because eventhough its just something cosmetic, its not excusable for this to happen. A friend, with the previous MBP to mine (CD, 128mb ati card, 2gb) seems to be running the animations without any issues whatsoever.

  • WARRANTY null and void? Seriously??

Hi all, new to this so please forgive me if I have posted in the wrong forum.
I dropped my phone and cracked the screen - is it true that I now have no warranty at all because of this?? Seriously I now have a phone for a further 21 months of my contract and am not covered for anything going wrong??

Yes - the warranty covers the potential for manufacturing defects that come to light within the warranty period. Accidental damage is not covered by any warranty on any product. Your household insurance may cover this type of loss, or your contract with your phone provider might include insurance, otherwise you'll need to fund the repair/replacement from your own pocket.

  • Acrobat XI very sluggish on Yoga 3 Pro

I have noticed that Adobe Acrobat XI is very sluggish on the Yoga 3 Pro. Specifically laggy when zooming in and out, panning, scrolling, and full screen. This is especially apparent with full screen and quite annoying in tablet mode. However, using the Microsoft Reader app with the same PDF files does NOT experience this lag.
What I then discovered is that this has something to do with the Core M processor and it getting its power limited. If you change the power plan in OneKey Optimizer to High Performance (from Balanced, for example), Acrobat all of a sudden becomes quite snappy.
When in tablet mode, if you simply want to read a PDF file (and use Acrobat), you do not need "high performance", so to extend the unfortunately bad battery life of the Yoga 3 Pro, you would want to put it in Balanced or Power Saver -- this should still be sufficient to read PDF files, but it is not the case with Acrobat XI unfortunately.
I'm not sure which specific CPU limiting feature of the power plan is causing this issue in Acrobat, but I thought I would post this because I couldn't find anything on the internet on this issue.
