=3 applets hanging Netscape with 1.3.1_01a or 1.3.1_02
The Java 2 v1.3.1_01a and 1.3.1_02 Plug-Ins completely hang Netscape 4.79 (and probably 4.x in general) and 6.2 when there are 3 or more simple applets in a single HTML page. This can be reproduced with a simple empty sub-class of java.applet.Applet and placing 3 or more instances of this in one HTML page (e.g. via jsp:plugin). [I used 16x16 applets in this case.]
Note that I could get 3 instances of an extremely heavy, slow-loading JApplet-based applet to load without hanging Netscape, so there appears to be a timing, deadlock issue here.
I have attempted to file a JDC bug on this matter, but it was not accepted as I could not reproduce the bug in Java 2 v1.4! Given that this issue spread to 1.3.1_02 (I originally found it in 1.3.1_01a), I am afraid it may leak into 1.4 at some later point, however!
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any workarounds?
[I use extremely lightweight applets in potentially large quantities (e.g. dozens) in HTML pages. 1.3.1_01a and 1.3.1_02 are thus complete non-starters in Netscape -- and I require 1.3.x functionalities in the applet. 1.3.1_01 works beautifully in Netscape and Internet Explorer for over 150 applets in one page -- though Netscape is substantially slower than Internet Explorer in this case. 1.3.1_01a and 1.3.1_02 work beautifully in Internet Explorer -- but hang Netscape completely in this case.]
I tried turning off Recycle ClassLoader.
I even tried turning off the "Default VM" stuff for Netscape (as that is new to 1.3.1_01a and higher, of course).
Neither made any significant difference. I sometimes got 3 applets to come up on a page without hanging, but visiting a couple such pages produced a nearly guaranteed hang.
I wonder if this is related to the spurious HTTP request the Plug-In makes in Netscape.
The Plug-In (1.3.1 and higher at least) appears to always makes 1 additional HTTP request in my experience when in Netscape as compared to Explorer. I never would have noticed this except that this request happens to hit a servlet which logs such things with a request with no path-info (and it requires path-info).

Java Applets in Netscape with EMBED tag
Hi,
I tried to run the examples on the:
http://192.9.48.9/products/plugin/1.3/demos/applets.html
Demo paged off of the plug page and in Netscape 4.08 it
does not know there is a plugin , in Netscape 6.0
it knows there is a plug in but won't use the one installed on the machine (1.3.1) which is the same level as the demo.
Any clues how to get applets to use the Java Plugin with Netscape? This works fine in IE
Thanks!
BTW- I'm using NT 4.0 os.Probably 1.3.1 conflicts with 1.3.1_01 or 1.3.1_02.
You need the HTML Converter from the Java PlugIn download page to make your page ready for Netscape 4.x. Go to http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html (Java Plug-in HTML Converter Download) to download your copy of the HTML Converter. Watch for the current version, it is 1.3, not 1.1.1.
Download your page, strip out the <embed/> and <object/> elements, uncomment the <applet/> element and run the HTML Converter.
Additional Information:
Netscape 6 does not use the <embed/> element anymore since it isn't a html element but was a proprietary netscape tag. Netscape 6 uses the <object/> element like Internet Explorer and Opera.
Another note on <embed/>:
Use of <embed/> is strongly discouraged, but there's no other chance. Let's hope support for Netscape 4.x won't be neccessary any more in a few months.
A note on <applet/>:
The <applet/> element is deprecated since HTML 4.01 or earlier (http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/objects.html Objects in HTML 4). One should use the <object> element instead anyway. The semantic description of html elements found in the technical report of the html 4.01 recommendation is still valid for current html versions of today (XHTML 1.1 and XHTML Basic 1.0).
There's also a funny page of Sun about HTML: http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/docs/tags.html. Don't take that page too serious since it states it is talking about HTML, but it isn't.
If you use the HTML Converter, be sure to use the Extended (Standard + All Browsers/Platforms) template to tell Netscape, Opera and Internet Explorer regardless of the used version to display the applet correctly. But watch out: the generated code is not HTML and will perhaps even crash your page in Internet Explorer 6 and browsers that rely on the HTML standard! It also won't work with Netscape 6 if there is a different version of the Java Plugin installed more recently than the requested. I have SDK 1.3, 1.3.1 and 1.4 installed, and Netscape 6 wants to download the 1.3.1 Plugin.
The best way to make your applet work in really every browser is to study what the converter is trying to do and code it by yourself in a conformant way. Be sure not to tell the browser the Plugin version to use to avoid the neccessarity of downloading outdated plugins and installing several plugins (1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.1_01, 1.3.1_02, 1.4...). -
Applet hangs during https communication
I have an application using applet to servlet communication,the https communication is established by URLConnection.However after certain time of communication the applet just hangs at getOutputStream .without any error or exception.
The environment is JRE 1.4.2_07 and Tomcat with SSL enabled.I spent lot of time tracking this bug but could not find any answer.
I want to bring to your notice that getOutputStream() hangs or blocks only for https but works fine with http,also not during start of applet but after changing the applet state.I assume it may not be the problem from URLConnection may be the applet looses the https authentication during state change and hangs in connect or getOutputStream().we are considering to move to HttpClient but not sure if its going to resolve this problem.Any ideas ar appreciated.
many thanks.As requested here is the full trace , marked in bold where the communication is hanging.The applet has loaded twice in this case. Any comments will be helpful as its very urgent.

Hello!
I'm developing an applet that communicates with a server using a DataInput/DataOutput streams.
The applet is started in a new Internet Explorer window that is created using javascript when the user clicks on a link.
Everything works great, except that when I close the applet window, the "parent" window hangs/freezes and has to be closed by killing the process from the task manager.
I'm pretty sure that all threads are terminiated correctly so that shouldn't be the problem. What makes it even more strange is that the applet actually finishes its destroy method before IE hangs.
Anyone out there who has experienced a similar problem or has any ideas what the problem could be?You bet I have. At work, our Operating System is Windows NT SP 6. We use the JRE 1.4.2_03 plugin and IE 5.5. The applet worked great until the admin personell installed security hotfixes for Windows NT. Once they installed the hotfix, IE would hang once the browser window with the applet was closed (i.e. the applet was opened in a separate window.) Not only did the applet hang the browser, but the applets no longer paint correctly. Mind you, the only thing that was changed was the Hotfixes for windows NT were loaded. We actually pinpointed the actual hotfix that was doing this. I tried everything, including making a small applet that did nothing. The only thing that seemed to temporarily fix the problem was to have the "java console" automatically show itself on each client. This was a kluge. The only recommendations I received was to update to Windows 2000 and IE 6. Which, incidently, the problem goes away when I use both of those on my laptop. Also, the problem doesn't exist in Netscape or mozilla. I think it is Operating System / Internet Explorer related. Maybe a thread deadlock or something. Tell me if you can get it to not hang by making the "java console" show itself. It is so bizarre. I'm sorry I couldn't offer much help.

Hi there,
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post my question. However, i saw some discussions reg. Applets on Netscape 6 and i guess that many of you might be familiar with the scenario.
I'm having trouble getting any applets to work on Netscape 6 when I have HTTP authentication on the webserver enabled. The applet works fine under normal circumstances.
Instead of loading the applet, I get a Java dialog box saying "Enter Network Password" and asks me to enter my username/password. This is a specific Java dialog box, complete with a picture of Duke, and it
gives my firewall, digest and realm information.
However, the dialog box doesn't accept my username/password, and doesn't
display my applet.
Here is what i captured on the Java console:

Priyaoops, i forgot to add this, can u tell me what speeddial.class is trying to do?
i belive u r making a url connection in that class and u got a null exception.
if u r indeed making a urlconnection, be sure to include the basic authentication in the headers. here is a sample
String basicAuth = Base64Coder.base64Encode("username:password");
basicAuth = "Basic " + basicAuth;
java.net.URL url = new java.net.URL(strUrl);
java.net.HttpURLConnection con = (java.net.HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();
con.setRequestProperty("Authorization", basicAuth); -
Applet in Netscape question.
Hi, Applet in Netscape question.
When an applet is run by Explorer everything is OK when trying to run with Netscape (7.1) nothing happening

Thank you in advance !Dear Experts.
Reading through previous Forum similar questions, I changed the code (down below)
Now I receive the message:
Click here to get the plugin
This is encouraging because before Netscape ignored the applet completely ...
However I already have plugin version 1.4.2_03 installed (and recognized by Explorer)
The question is still why the applet is not working with Netscape ?
Thank you in advance for your help?

Forms Applet hangs after configuration of webutil
Hi,
I have Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 with Oracle Database 10g on Windows 2000 server. Browser is IE6
Our application was working fine. But for one of the functionality, we used webutil and after configuration of webutil on AS, the application is not launching.
Applet hangs showing applet initiated and in java console it shows
Downloading http://localhost/forms/java/frmwebutil.jar to JAR cache
RegisterWebUtil - Loading WebUtil Version 1.0.6.
I have signed both frmwebutil.jar and jacob.jar.
I have followed all steps mentioned in the document for configuration.
I think still there is something missing.
Please give some pointers on resolving this issue.
Thanks
ATDo the following:
1. On client machine, exit all open browsers.
2. If you are running Developer Suite, stop OC4J.
3. Manually delete JAR cache. Delete all files in:
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Oracle Jar Cache
4. Delete the following file (your JInitiator version may be different):
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\jinitiator13129.trace
5. Open the Jinitiator Control Panel which can be found on the Windows Control Panel and add the following to the "Java Runtime Parameters" on the Basic tab:
-Djavaplugin.trace=true -Djavaplugin.trace.option=basic
Click on Apply and exit the Control Panel
6. On the server, add the following to the formsweb.cfg:
WebUtilLogging=on
WebUtilLoggingDetail=normal
WebUtilErrorMode=Alert
6. If the server is a Unix platform, recompile the form and ensure that you use the COMPILE_ALL=YES option.
7. Retest one time. Do not try more than one time as this will create too many entries in the trace file.
8. After the failure has reproduced, exit the form and the browser. Open the new jinitiator13129.trace file and carefully review. It is likey you will find the cause of the problem in this file. At minimum, a hint should be offered. -
JavaFX applets hang on Vista 64
I'm unable to run any applet that uses JavaFX on my 64-bit Vista machine (Vista Business 64-bit, SP2). The applet hangs during the Java loading animation. It consumes no CPU. For example, the Vancouver Olympics medal viewer (http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-medals/geo-view/). This happens on both Firefox (v3.6) and IE 8. On Firefox, it hangs the whole browser until I use Process Explorer to kill the Java subprocess. On IE, it does not hang the browser; the loading animation just spins forever. On Firefox, I turned on logging in the Java console (which also hangs) but saw nothing obvious. The last four lines are
Load Geographic View
reset view 2010
getEligibleCountriesForCurrentYear
network: Cache entry found [url: http://www.vancouver2010.com//api/country/list.json, version: null] prevalidated=false/0
I'm using Sun JDK 1.6.0_18, and it happens with both the 32- and the 64-bit versions. (Also, I have the JavaFX 1.2 SDK installed). Note that non-JavaFX applets work fine, for example the demo applets that ship with the JDK. One more data point: the Java EE 6 installer hangs also. The splash screen appears, then it opens a new window, then it hangs. The new window never fully paints. I don't know if this is related to my JavaFX troubles.
I'm a developer evaluating Java EE 6 and JavaFX for a possible RIA, but this has me completely stuck. Any help much appreciated.Okay, here's the stack traces, split across multiple replies to handle the 7,500 character limit:

When I open Pages from the Dock, the page comes up on the screen but immediately hangs up with the rainbow circle spinning. I finally have to force quite to make it go away. It does not ask me to choose a template. This is sporadic, sometimes working, sometimes not. What is going on?
Helo,
Did you try to delete Pages' preferences file(s) in the folder your-user-name/Library/Preferences ?
There are one or more (depends on your OS X version) file like "com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist"
You can also repair permissions with Disk Utility in the folder Applications/Utilities.
Choose the hard drive were Pages is and click the button "Repair permissions".
Or you can re-install Pages.
Hope this will help. -

Hello Bethandfive,
You may need to restore the iPhone while it is in what's called 'recovery mode.'
iOS: Unable to update or restore

Notes:
In certain situations, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will automatically go into recovery mode after an update or restore issue. If your device is already in recovery mode, you can attempt to restore using iTunes.

My second thought is that you're experiencing hard drive problems and need to run Disk Utility to check the HD and possible repair. You need to start from your original OS X install disc by inserting it and restarting while holding
the C key. Once it has started up choose your language and at the next screen go to the menu bar on top and click the Utilities menu. Select Disk Utility. Choose your hard drive and look to the bottom part of the DU window and note the SMART status, anything other than Verified indicates a problem. Next select the First Aid tab and click Repair. If DU reports that it repaired anything do it again until it reports that the drive is ok. -
