3 MONTHS DELAY FOR CONNECTING TO A NEW BUILD PROPE...

Hi all,
This is my first post here, not intended to be a rant, but would like to share my anger and frustration I had with BT Openreach. This is a very long story.
To begin, I am not an average user, I understand about BT Wholesale, ISP, service provider, Line provisioning team, Line Plant Team etc... Yet, everytime I called BT customer, I was treated as if I was an idiot but in fact, the "advisors" were actually those did not know whats going on!
Anyway, I think it was rather unfortunate that no matter which ISP we go for, the actual connection must be done by Openreach. This means, if Openreach decides not to work for you, then you'll be stuck... forever. well, satellite broadband or 3G,4G are still viable if you have the wallet.
So my situation began 3 months ago when I moved into my new built apartment in London. I quickly signed up to BT internet and phone because this was just a daily necessity. Typically, there is a 14days lead time for the engineers to attend your case, which is reasonable... and so I waited for it. The "big" day came which I took holiday from work to wait, and after numerous emails and txt to tell me to wait at home for the engineer, and guess what happened? No show from BT.
I phoned the customer care in India the next day, waited for 30mins on my mobile (had not discover WeQ4U yet that time), someone picked up and said that the engineer would come again the following monday, although no explanation was given why no show the first time. So, I waited and wasted another day of my 25days annual leave, NO SHOW AGAIN!
This time, I was given an explanation that there was a problem at the switch, so additional works was required. Which also meant that an even longer delay would result. I wasn't happy with BT and their so-called customer care’s attitude and so decided to cancel my order and go with a service provider that I used for the last 7 years.
So... I went to signup phone and internet package with them, as this company was truly UK BASED, I received update almost instantly. So on the day I paid for the connection, it immediately showed up as delay status from Openreach. I phone them up to find out, and they were told by Openreach that there was a substantial problem occurred at the exchange, - this seemed to match with what BT told me, so fair enough, I waited for a week as Openreach said they would update my ISP in a week time.
A week had gone, as expected, no update whatsoever. I contacted my service provider to find out, then they were told by Openreach that they were working on it and advised a "significant update" would be issued 3 WEEKS LATER! (This was probably the 5th week since I signed up to BT broadband). Openreach also advised my provider not to contact them during this time because there would not be any updates.
Ok, so I waited for three more weeks (8th week). I called my service provider to check the progress, which they raised the question to BT Wholesale team and then the team spoke to BT Openreach, the answer I got was they had not completed the works… that was it! They advised me to wait for another THREE weeks for an UPDATE. WTF, bear in mind the property was not in the middle of nowhere, it was in LONDON! waiting for 6 weeks just to receive an update? and yet they did not mention about when the works would be completed, or whether it had even started?
After a good conversation with my service provider, they had escalated the case for me. After a week of escalation, no reply from Openreach so my provider escalated again to get to their manager, now this time the manager came back and said the works were completed! So.. did that mean I could get my phone line to work? No.
Today is probably the 10th week I waited, and so far, no official word from Openreach on when they will actually connect my phone.
This is ridiculous because I am living in a new built apartment, my ISP also searched that there are 3 pairs of spare lines to the apartment block – which is referred as Gold status. At one point, Openreach said that there was a lack of supply to my development, hence causing the delay. And yet I am receiving more and more WIFI connections from my neighbours everyday, so how can this be true?
I contacted my property developer, they said they had provided all necessary infrastructure, not being able to connect phone would be BT’s problem.
I contacted Ofcom, and they said there was NO WAY to complaint about Openreach because none of us are actually in contract with them. The only way to complaint would be through my ISP. Well, in a way this was true, but shouldn’t there be warranty from Openreach to the end users? Any visiting Openreach website was more of a time waster because they do not contain any useful information about contacting them or making a complaint.
My ISP contacted BT wholesale and Openreach, the reply from them was almost a box standard reason for delay. I felt that this problem was out of their control because there wasn’t much they could do if BT Wholesale or openreach were not co-operating.
So… what should I do now? Wait? Change supplier? Or just give up and use satellite broadband? Given that no satellite dishes are allowed in apartment balconies. 3G? 4G?

Hi atsang,
Unfortunately you will need to contact and negotiate with your Communication Provider as BT Retail (an ISP who operates this forum) can't help you as you're not a BT Retail Customer.
Openreach (a BTplc Group Company) own, maintain and install the exchanges and telecommunication lines for the majority of ISPs and Communication Provider. However Openreach is a seperate line of business to the rest of the BTplc Group and have to treat all ISPs/CPs equally and BT Retail do not get any priority.
Openreach do not talk to end users like you and I, they will only talk to the ISPs/CPs.
I'm afraid you will need to take this up with your Communication Provider.
This is a BT Retail Customer to Customer help forum. The only BT presence are the moderators.
Hope that helps and you get it sorted soon,
Cheers

  • Ridiculous delay for connection of phone for elder...

    My widowed mother (in her seventies) is moving into a new build flat on Thursday of this week and despite the fact that the telephone wiring is in place within the building and others in the building are already connected, BT are saying that they cannot connect her until the 16th March 2011. What can I do to escalate this and get some action ?  I would appreciate any tips.

  • New build installation - 4 months and still waitin...

    Hi
    As with many posts on this forum, we have a major problem with phone line installation. Back in April I ordered a new phone line to be installed, together with an Infinity broadband package, ready for my move into a house on a new development. We moved in on 2nd May and was told installation would take place on 23rd May. No engr showed and when I rang to query this I was told he was working on the exchange and I would be updated. Needless to say no update was forthcoming. When I called again I was then told that the developers working on behalf of the estate had not finished their side of the work. Having spoken to them, I found out the delay was being caused by OpenReach and the cabling was not completed. This story has now been repeated every time I call, and it is now coming up to 4 months since my order was placed. I keep being given a new installation date which is then cancelled a few days beforehand. The last straw has come today; I was due an update on the 23rd which was not forthcoming, I have now been told there will be no further news until 17th August!
    The delay has cost us a fortune in mobile phone credit, along with buying and topping up 2 dongles. The phone signal here is almost non existent, and as both my son and I are disabled with chronic health conditions there is a major concern in case we can't get a signal. Back in May I collapsed at home, with no one else here. I was lapsing in and out of consiousness but managed to crawl to a door and get a signal to call an ambulance. If it happens again I may not be so lucky.
    How can BT and OpenReach justify the fact that it takes at least 4 months to carry out the necessary cabling work? People started moving into their new houses at the start of the year so why did BT decide it wasnt necessary to carry out the work in readiness for the new residents?
    One of the most frustrating things is that when we call BT, unless they speak to the OpenReach engineer there and then, they have no idea what is going on. The engineer may have updated the records two weeks before but we are never told what is still needed and why. I have called the engineer myself, but am told he cannot deal with individual queries, even though I am calling on behalf of a number of residents! BT have the monopoly on a product that they cannot supply - surely it is time to let other companies become involved in line installation, or are they scared they will lose out due to their own bad service?
    A number of residents here, including myself, are now going to escalate the matter to Ofcom, our MP and also the national media. Questions need to be asked as to why new build homes are without essential methods of communication for so long in this age of technology? We are also going to be looking at starting legal action against BT for not fulfilling contractual obligations, and claiming compensation to cover the mounting costs we are paying out. From the amount of postings here we are not alone in this matter, and surely BT can see this can't continue?
    Plese feel free to add your thoughts to this issue.

  • New Build Connection Problems

    Hi,
    Hoping someone can help me with their past experience or knowledge. I have been in my new build home for a couple of weeks now and am struggling to get a phone/fibre optic connection. Both BT and the OpenReach address checkers have absolutely no information regarding my address even though I have seen both of their vans working down our street (and I confirmed that they were working on the phone lines).
    When talking to BT I was told I would need to pay for £130 for a line installation in order for them to tell us what services we could use?!! So potentially I would be out of pocket for nothing, perhaps even unusable broadband.
    The street just down from mine is established and shows fibre optic available and taking orders, so I guess my question is who do I need to talk to in order for my new address to get registered too? I find it really weird that the process for new builds is so convoluted and people face massive delays getting connected...
    Cheers.

  • New server and/or CA certificate for connection from custom authentication

    We are running Access Manager version 72005Q4 in the Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP5 B06/23/2005 container with java build 1.5.0_07-b03. I run a custom authentication module which checks sessions against our university single sign on system which is CAS (from Yale/Jasig). The checks are essentially https calls. All this has been working well for us for the last couple of years.
    I would like to migrate the certificate used on the university CAS system from a Verisign certificate to a wildcard certificate issued by the IPS CA in spain -- these are in most browsers but are not in the standard batch of cacerts CA's -- and are free for .edu domains.
    My other java based authentication plugins (Blackboard, custom apps etc) have worked fine once I import the certificate into the cacerts for the java container, but I'm missing something (obvious probably) about importing this certificate so that my amserver custom authentication module can connect to the CAS server once the CAS server is using the new certificate.
    Could anyone provide guidance on where I need to import this server certificate (or preferably the IPS CA) in order to allow the custom authentication module to work properly? I assume this same problem has been solved by people wishing to connect from the amserver to services with self signed certificates. For some reason I'm finding the debugging unexpectedly difficult, I'll outline some of those details below.
    Relevant things I've tried so far:
    Import both the server cert and the IPS CA into the cacerts of the java container identified in the web server server.xml /usr/jdk/entsys-j2se.
    Import the IPS CA into the web server cert8 style db via the web admin server.
    The debugging has surprised me a bit, as I'm not getting an error that is explicitly SSL related error. It almost seems like the URLConnection object ends up using a HttpURLConnection rather than an HttpsURLConnection and never gives me a cert error, rather a connection refused since there is no non SSL service running on CAS. The same code pointed to the server running the verisign cert works as expected.

    The relevent bit of code from the SecureURL.retrieve looks as follows:
    URL u = new URL(url);
    if (!u.getProtocol().equals("https"))
    throw new IOException("only 'https' URLs are valid for this method");
    URLConnection uc = u.openConnection();
    uc.setRequestProperty("Connection", "close");
    r = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(uc.getInputStream()));
    String line;
    StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer();
    while ((line = r.readLine()) != null)
    buf.append(line + "\n");
    return buf.toString();
    } finally { ...
    The fact that this same code in other authentication modules running outside the amserver (in other web containers as well, tomcat and resin for example) running java 1.5 works fine with the new CA, as well as with self signed certs that I've imported into the appropriate cacerts file leads me to believe that I'm either importing the certificate into the wrong store, or that there is some additional step needed for the amserver in the Sun Web container.
    Thank you very much for any insights and help,
    Ethan

    I thought since this has had a fair number of views I would give an update.
    I have been able to confirm that the custom authentication module is using the cert8 db defined in the AMConfig property com.iplanet.am.admin.cli.certdb.dir as documented. I do seem to have a problem using the certificate to make outgoing connections, even though the certificate verifies correctly for use as a server certificate. This is likely a question for a different forum, but just to show what I'm looking at:
    root@jbc1 providers#/usr/sfw/bin/certutil -V -n "FSU Wildcard Certificate" -d /opt/SUNWwbsvr/alias -P https-jbc1.ucs.fsu.edu-jbc1- -u V
    certutil: certificate is valid
    root@jbc1 providers#/usr/sfw/bin/certutil -V -n "FSU Wildcard Certificate" -d /opt/SUNWwbsvr/alias -P https-jbc1.ucs.fsu.edu-jbc1- -u C
    certutil: certificate is invalid: Certificate type not approved for application.
    root@jbc1 providers#/usr/sfw/bin/certutil -M -n "FSU Wildcard Certificate" -d /opt/SUNWwbsvr/alias -P https-jbc1.ucs.fsu.edu-jbc1- -t uP,uP,uP
    root@jbc1 providers#/usr/sfw/bin/certutil -V -l -n "FSU Wildcard Certificate" -d /opt/SUNWwbsvr/alias -P https-jbc1.ucs.fsu.edu-jbc1- -u C
    FSU Wildcard Certificate : Certificate type not approved for application.
    So it could be that I don't understand how to use the certutiil to get the permissions I want, or it could be that using the same certificate for both server and client functions is not supported -- though you can see why this would be a common case with wildcard certificates.
    BTW for those interested, it did seem to be the case that when the certificate failure occurred that the attempt was then made by the URLConnection to bind to port 80 in cleartext even though the URL was clearly https. I'm sure this was just an attempt to help out misformed URL, but it seemed that the URLConnection implementation in the amserver would swapped traffic over cleartext if that port had been open on the server I was making the https connection to; that seems dangerous to me, I would not have wanted it to quietly work that way exposing sensitive information to the network.
    This was why I was getting back a connection refused instead of a certificate exception. The URLConnection implementation used by the amserver is defined by java.protocol.handler.pkgs=com.iplanet.services.comm argument passwd to the JVM, and I imagine this is done because the amserver pre-dates the inclusion of the sun.net.www.protocol handlers, but I don't know, there maybe reasons why the amserver wants it own handler. I only noticed that this is what was going on when I as casting the httpsURLConnection objects to other types trying to diagnose the certificate problem. I would be interested in hearing if anyone knows if there is a reason not to use sun.net.www.protocol with the amserver.
    After switching to the sun.net.www.protocol handler I was able to get my certificate errors rather than the "Connection Refused" which is what lead me to the above questions about certutil.

  • New Build for Lightroom 3

    First post so please be kind
    I currently am using an old P4 machine to edit my photos. I up until a month ago was using acdsee for editing my Canon 5D files. I've since upgraded to a 5d mark2 and downloaded the free trial of lightroom 3 and so far loving all the capabilities it offers over acdsee. However it's dog slow on my p4 with 4gb ram and running Win XP. So I'm in the market for a new build specifically for lightroom 3. My budget is small, I've done some research but still not sure on cpu/mobo and if I really need 8gb of ram or can get away with 4gb. Hard drives I've decided on are 2 WD velociraptors 300gb one for OS
    and the 2nd for Programs which mainly will only be LR 3
    2 1tb WD Black, one for my photo storage and one for back up.
    Last drive will be a 1 or 2 TB external drive for backup.
    Will the video from the mobo be enough for Lightroom 3 or do i need to upgrade that as well?
    I've seen some great deals on refurbished pc's and also I am capable of building a pc from a barebones kit.
    Any suggestions you guys have would be great!
    Thank you,

    Have a look here: Adobe Forums: What PC to build?
    Now this is for video editing. Your requirements for LR are much less, so take a specific look at the budget model. That should be more than enough for your purposes. Your suggested disk setup looks like overkill (yeah, coming from me, that is hardly possible, but I mean it). You could shave off sizable $$ by going for a single Velociraptor and using simple Samsung Spinpoint F3's instead.

    Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
    Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
    Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
    you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

    Hi,
    I've tried searching the forum but can't seem to find posts that are related to my situation.
    Basically I'm moving into a new build.  There isn't a phone line yet.  The postcode checker doesn't think BT Infinity is available, so I can't order.
    However, as advised by the FAQ at http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/BT-Infinity-Availability-FAQs/td-p/181603, I checked on the wholesale checker www.btwholesale.com/adslchecker and it says it's all available.  Any advice please?

    Select setup as "New", the next screen should prompt you to rename your phone. Just name it what you already have it named. After that, you should be able to sync and all of your data & settings will still be exactly as you've already set them up on your phone. The message is more threatening than what really happens.

    Hi
    First i really doubt that you would be able to see those transactions in message tracking logs since the default setting is 30 days.
    By default the message tracking log is set to 30 days, you can change that setting though through the Shell:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997984.aspx
    If this is the case then you can better increase the tracking logs retention for 3 months for the next delay can be recorded.
    Also try to see if you could see some information on the protocol logs as well.

    There are only two types of HDMI cables (standard and high speed - listen to all 1.2, 1.3 etc etc nonsense they will try to tell in the store) both types will work with the Apple TV.
    The cable may be faulty though, have you got another to try, what exactly is happening.

    I have bought monthly subscription for photoshop but I have changed my system so I want it to be working in my new computer. What should I have to do?

    In some cases, the Creative Cloud app for desktop does not display all the applications available in Creative Cloud. The apps you can't install on your computer are removed from the download selection screen.

  • Set a new expiry delay for entries added in the cache by a read through

    Hi,
    I have an application that uses an Oracle Coherence cache backed by a database. Each item that is added in the cache must have a custom expiry delay computed from its content.
    Is it possible to set a new expiry delay for the entries loaded in the cache from the database by a read through operation?
    I tried setting a new expiry delay in the load method of the BinaryEntryStore, but it is ignored and the default expiry of the corresponding cache is used instead. Also I tried using a MapTrigger, but the entries added in the cache by a read through operation are not intercepted by the MapTrigger.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

    What we do (not sure if it proper way, but it worked for us) is extend the LocalCache and override the put method.
    public Object put(
    Object oKey,
    Object oValue,
    long expiry)
    long newexpiry = xxxxx;
    return super.put(oKey, oValue, newexpiry);
    }
