3750 Cross-stack equal cost routes across different switches in the stack

Hello,
If I configure a cross stack ethernet channel does it support link aggregation to increase bandwidth or is it just support for link failover?

Answer is support for link failover.
The EtherChannel on multiple switches in the Cisco Catalyst 3750 stack is called cross-stack EtherChannel.
If a link within an EtherChannel fails, traffic previously carried over that failed link changes to the remaining links
within the EtherChannel. A trap is sent for a failure, which identifies the switch, the EtherChannel, and the failed link.
Inbound broadcast and multicast packets on one link in an EtherChannel are blocked, and cannot return on any other link of the EtherChannel.

  • If equal cost routes exist, OSPF uses CEF load balancing?

    Hi All,
    Can anyone explain about:

Rick is correct, but if his response, with mine, causes any confusion. . .
    To OP's original question:
If equal cost routes exist, OSPF uses CEF load balancing?
The answer is technically no, for the reason Rick describes.
But if we rephrase, such as:
Does CEF load balance across multiple equal cost routes generated by OSPF?
    The answer would be yes.
I suspect the latter question is what the OP really had in mind, but again, Rick is correct to distinguish that OSPF doesn't use CEF.

  • RIP/EIGRP maximum number of Equal cost routes

I am looking for documentation on:
If a router has 20 equal cost routing paths and only 4 show up in the routing table, what is the determining factor that chooses which four and where are the other 16 put in case the 4 routes become unusable.
Most documentation will tell you the maximum amount and how to change it but I have not found any documentation on how EIGRP or RIP chooses the routes.

You can have up to 4 by default, but you can configure the routing table to accept up to 6 on older code, and up to 8 on newer code, using the command "maximum-paths" under router eigrp. EIGRP will attempt to install all of the available paths, but the routing table will only allow it to install the first x that it installs.
The routes which are not installed by EIGRP are placed in a "backup table." If one route fails, each routing protocol running on the router is notified, and will attempt to install any routes (which match the destination, of course) back into the routing table. Again, the frst x paths would win.
Be careful with this much redundancy in eigrp--you're playing with fire if you have 15 or 20 links between a pair of routers.Russ

  • One of the four switches of the stack crashed

    Hi,
I have a question, can You help me?
Symptoms: The switch hangs - after a hard reboot and after two hours switch No. 2 flew out from the stack. After the reboot, everything returned to normal and now when a few days passed switch works without problems.
    Devices: WS-C3750X-24T-S
    Best regards,
    Marcin.

12.2(55)SE1???  You're stack is running this?
I'd agree with Paolo.  Upgrade the IOS to 12.2(55)SE4 or 15.0(1)SE2.

  • HT4914 Can I use iTunes match to share my iTunes library across different users on the same computer?

I'm a teacher and I use my MBP in school and, while I've not had any issues with students looking through my computer, I'd like to use a seperate 'school' user just in case.  I need to have access to my iTunes library and I tried moving it to a shared folder but, possibly because of the size of my library, itdoesn't seem to work.  Is there a way I can use iTunes match to enable my 'school' user to access my library in the same way I can with my iPhone?

    Hey darkmavis86,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I believe you would benefit from the following article:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
However, if you do decide to use iTunes Match the answer to your question is "Yes". iTunes Match can be used to "sync" your iTunes library across multiple devices / computers / users.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Can I change what I want synced across different devices on the same Apple ID?

    Good evening everyone,
I purchased a 13" MacBook Pro with MAC OS X Lion, set up the iCloud function and everything worked well.  I have recently purchased a 17" MacBook Pro MAC OS X Lion also and want to be able to sync my Calendars with my iPhone.  I do however want to find out if it is possible to change the settings on my 13" Laptop so that nothing else but music is stored in my cloud since I use it solely for the purpose of DJing.  I want my 17" only for scheduling and keeping track of my interpreting business information.  Is this possible without screwing up my iCloud too much?
    Thanks,
    Juan

Figured it out...thanks though ahead of time.

  • Sharing music across different accounts on the same PC

    Hi,
I've got an iPod Classic with 12G of music, all from CD's. It is on iTunes on my account on my PC. I had a 8G iTouch for Xmas. I have opened another account on my PC and downloded iTunes. How can I transfer selected music from my original account to my new one?

I also don't understand why you'd open another itunes store account. Now you are going to forever have to keep track of 2 login credentials, and deal with hassles that multiple accounts sometimes present.
You can share music between 2 windows user accounts using these directions. Just be forewarned, if you move things to a shared folder in Windows Explorer, your original itunes will lose the paths to the music. Move it to the shared folder using itunes consolidate command.

  • Nexus 7010 OSPF Equal Cost Paths

    Hello,
I currently have two physical links connecting one data center to another.  These are both 10Gb links and I have manually set the cost to the primary link to '1' and the secondary link to '10'.  My question is, if I set the secondary link to '1' they would have equal cost routes.  What is the selection process at this point?   Will equal cost load balancing automatically kick in and use both links?
    Thank you,
    Scott

    Scott
Haven't used Nexus switches but generally yes it should do depending on the routing protocol ie. statics, EIGRP, OSPF etc. will use equal cost paths if they are in the routing table.
BGP is different in that without further configuration it picks just one path so there is only one entry in the routing table.
By default it will use per destination load sharing and the default on Nexus is destination IP address and port number to choose which link to use.
    "sh ip load-sharing"
will show you the current method it is using.

  • EIGRP- Equal Cost Paths Selection

    Hello,
This might be a simple question; using EIGRP and having 2 equal cost paths to the destination; how does the router/L3 switch route select the path from those two equal cost paths? Is there a way to force one path over anthoer?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best, ~sK

To answer your question we need to be clear that there are 2 parts to the decision about which path will be used to forward traffic. The first part is the identification of paths and their insertion into the routing table. This is the part where EIGRP plays a role. If EIGRP determines that there are two equal cost viable paths then both of the paths will be put into the routing table. This ends EIGRP involvement in the process. The part of the process that takes a particular packet and determines which path to use is handled by CEF. By default CEF looks at the number of available paths toward a destination and when there are multiple paths CEF will use a process that calculates based on source and destination address to choose a particular path. For the same source address and same destination address CEF should choose the same path every time.

  • Splitting Music and Podcasts Across Different Discs

Is it possible to split Music and Podcasts in the same library across different discs? The reason is my music is too big to get on my laptop drive so I have an external disk drive that is always plugged in when I'm at home. However I want to take podcasts with me when I travel so I want them to be put onto my laptop hard drive. I know I could probably achieve this by creating 2 libraries (although I haven't tried yet) but would prefer to see if I can do it with one.

Put its internal drive into an enclosure and copy the files off.

  • 5 switches in one Stack - How

    Hi All,
I have 5 Cisco switches 4 of them are 3750 Series and 5th switch is 3750 G series, 1st 4 switches are part of stack and 5th is not.
Design for 4 stack switches is :
Switch 1 Connect to Switch 4
Switch 1 also connects to switch 2 with a 2nd cable
    Switch2 connects to switch 3
    Switch3 connects to switch4
Can I remove the cable from second port from the switch4 which is connected to switch1 and plug switch 5 to switch4 and remove cable plug to 2nd port of the switch5.
If do the above is there any specific configuration which I need to do?
What is the down time I am looking at.?
    Regards

I understand that you require instruction on how to add/ remove a cat3750 to an existing stack.
First off, if a new switch needs to be added, it must have the same IOS image version as that of the existing 3750 in the stack. This avoids the version mismatch issue. To do so, the new switch to be added must already have the image loaded to it same as the ones on the stack. This link has all necessary procedures when managing switch stacks:
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat3750/12220se/3750scg/swstack.htm
One important note though, make sure the switches that you add to or remove from the switch stack are powered off.
    This is because:
Adding powered-on switches (merging) causes the stack masters of the merging switch stacks to elect a stack master from among themselves. The re-elected stack master retains its role and configuration and so do its stack members. All remaining switches, including the former stack masters, reload and join the switch stack as stack members. They change their stack member numbers to the lowest available numbers and use the stack configuration of the re-elected stack master.
Removing powered-on stack members causes the switch stack to divide (partition) into two or more switch stacks, each with the same configuration. This can cause an IP address configuration conflict in your network. If you want the switch stacks to remain separate, change the IP address or addresses of the newly created switch stacks. If you did not intend to partition the switch stack:
    a. Power off the new switch .
    b. Reconnect them to the original switch stack through their StackWise ports.
    c. Power on the switch.
    ===============
The action you are planning to perform should not cause any downtime till the time there is one stack cable connecte from the switch to the stack or else the switch will be out of stack and wont function as a single unit.

    Varun

  • C2960S-STACK module in a 2960-X switch

Do the 2960S stacking modules work in a 2960-X?  The stacking cables are the same part #, even though the description for the 2960-X says Flexstack-Plus.
    C2960S-STACK - FlexStack hot-swappable stacking module
    C2960X-STACK - FlexStack-Plus hot-swappable stacking module
    CAB-STK-E-0.5M - FlexStack stacking cable with a 0.5 m length
    CAB-STK-E-0.5M - FlexStack-Plus stacking cable with a 0.5 m length

    No!
    1) 2960-stack moudles fit only 2960s
    2) 2960-x fit modules fit only 2960x
    3) cables are the same
    4) IOS must be the same version. (UPGRADE OR DOWNGADE AS APPROPRIAT
    5)  for a stack with both 2960s and 2960x there are two command that need to be entered on the 2960-x...1) change the port speed to 10.  2) change the smd to routing.

  • Router vs switch on the access

We're designing a network for a DR exercise and there's a question as to whether we need to have a router or a switch on the access. The network behind this device a flat network (1 vlan). Upstream from this device is an edge router that will do BGP and ipeFR. Can anybody please render an opinion on this?
    Thanks.

I'm of the opinion you meet requirements as simply as possible. With current equipment, for what you described (if I correctly understand), switches at the edge would be "simpler". However, some reasons for edge routing where you're not routing . . .
I've seen 1:1 edge routers used when using flow based hardware. The idea being that the edge router melts down before the next router upstream. Almost an external "control plane" protector.
Another reason, pseudo "distributed" processing. You expect the load imposed by edge QoS classification and marking or ACL processing could not be handled by the upstream router alone.
Some believe that such a design is easier to support with configurations on separate devices for QoS, ACLs and such.
As long as there's reason for using routers where you describe, then do so. Just be cautious of, "we don't know why, just would feel better". With the latter, analyze whether there's real reason for discomfort.

  • 2 locations, 2 core switch stacks, fibre in between, equal cost load balancing between?

    Hi,
We've recently inherited a job that another company was doing, so we've had our hand slightly forced on the kit and overall topology involved, however that's all fine and we can make it work.
This is a collapsed core topology with core and access switches, split over 3 blocks (fibre connections between), one core switch/stack is in block B and the other in block C, with access switches throughout.
They require all access switches to be connected to the Core in B and the Core in C, and then obviously cross connects between the two cores.
    They state:
"Core switches shall be linked with 2x 1Gbps links bonded into a standard compliant Etherchannel"
"Uplinks between access and core switches shall be non-blocking - for example equal cost load balancing at layer 3, or layer 2 bonded multi-chassis Etherchannel"
The specced kit for the core are 3850's, in an ideal world I'd use VSS (Virtual Switch System) to achieve the above statements beyond repute; but this is only supported on 4500/6500 and Nexus platforms.
Do we think a cross stack etherchannel (LACP between both core switch stacks) would satisfy the above statements? Or the statements may just be badly worded...
I look forward to your thoughts and views on this! Thanks!

As the others have noted, the 3850s, to stack, are restricted to the length of the longest stack cables.
As you have noted, VSS physical units would allow the "logical" unit to be far apart.
For a "small" VSS core, the 4500-X might be an idea unit.  (Other than cost, the 4500 would be a better choice for a core device.)
Something to watch for, or understand, when running VSS, Etherchannel doesn't load balance as it does on a single chassis or stack.  VSS will avoid using the VSL cross link unless it must.
As many access switches, today, support basic L3 routing, you might also determine whether a L3 edge would be a suitable alternative choice.  It would allow retention of the 3850s and can offer some advantages even over VSS.  (Where VSS is very nice [as too the Nexus] supporting servers with Etherchannels.)

  • How to control the cost center of different company canu2019t be used across

    Hi Experts,
There are 3 compamy codes in our system, and the 3 company code in one control area. Each company uses itself cost cent. When I assign cost center to an organization or a position, the cost centers of other company code can be used. We hope that cost center in different company canu2019t be used across.  Anybody could help me?
    Best Regards,
    QC

    Hi,
we can use cost centre of company A to the employee of company b.
cost centre means expense will be distributed as per cost centre. it may be a situation where an employee of company a works some time in company B as adeputaion we can assign cost centre of company B still he belongs to company A.
generaly we assign cost centre to position through A011 relation. here you assign the cost centre of original company say A( as he belongs to company A). in IT 1018 you assign different cost centre say company B.cost will be booked to company b as 1018 will supercede a011 relation ship.
