3G issues (full bars w/ 3G, but apps and safari won't connect)

I recently got the 3G iphone 16gb and right now it has this problem:
I would turn on 3G and get full bars and the 3G icon would appear, but when I try to open gmail and update, it would not connect and pop an error message "unable to retreive..." or take a really long time and not do anything at all. Same goes for Facebook app and Safari.
Upon the failure of the app the bars would drop to zero, the 3G icon would dissappear. I would press the home screen and exit, and while it idles in the main screen, bars would go back to full and 3G would appear again.
I would try to open Safari or apps again, and the process is repeated.
I called FIDO my provider, and they suggested a hard restart. It worked... for 5 minutes.
2nd time around I called and they suggested that since I was using a SIM card back from 2005, I needed the 3G enable SIM from the iPhone when it was delivered to me. Switched the line to the new SIM that came with it, and still no luck.
Hard resets, restarts, have no effect in solving the problem. And the funny story is, I was using the 8gb 3G before this 16gb with the old 2005 SIM and it worked perfectly.
Is it possible that something is wrong with the phone? I've made an appointment in the genius bar, but can anyone shed some light?

I started having a similar problem 3 days ago. I'm with Rogers and new SIM card (never was on Rogers previously). I usually stay on 3G. I've done a restore (without backup) on iTunes, reset network settings, hard restore....no luck.
I can make & receive phone calls just fine. Safari is either slow or times out (server stopped responding) and same with e-mail.
I seem to do better with 3G disabled.
I have had my phone for more than 4 months without a problem...until Dec 2.
Personally, I'm beginning to think it's something with the Rogers/Fido network in certain cities, but no one at Rogers/Fido will admit to it.

    Try settings/general/reset/reset network settings.  If that does not do it then contact your carrier

    I just received an email receipt from Paypal showing a $12.99 purchase from iTunes. I almost NEVER purchase anything over around five dollars in the app or music store. Since PayPal does not show what this purchase was for, I have not received the receipt from Apple yet, and I cannot find anyway to look up online what this purchase was for....I need help to find out ASAP what this purchase was. If my account has been compromised or if I have been incorrectly charged for something, I would like to get the issue handled immediately. I do not want to install iTunes on my PC (nor should I have to for Pete's sake), but I cannot see anything recent at all in my app or music history on my iPad (not that I would ever purchase anything for $12.99 anyway...I just don't).     It's not a virus. It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily.
    Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
    From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
    Close the malicious window or tab.
    Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
    If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

    HI Shelby,
    It sounds like your available free space is not reporting properly. I would start by quitting the Settings app:
    iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
    Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
    Swipe the app up to close it.
    When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
    iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting 
    If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works. 
    How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
    If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.

    Have you tried a simple reset of your iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
    Otherwise, have you tried any of the troubleshooting mentioned in this Apple support document?

    Basic troubleshooting steps might help. If you are using the iPad 1, low memory issues may be causing the app and Safari to crash.
    Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
    Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    Definitely do this - Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

    seems if I disable all security it works. Not a very good situation, tells me it's a port that is open that shouldn't be. I imagine it is fine on a mac, but on a pc it is an issue since most corporations use pc's.

  • Automatically filling in log ons in apps and safari....how?

    On my computer, I use 1Password to store all log ons. When I bring up a URL, I can click and it fills in the proper log on.
    In iPhone, I would like the same thing for apps and safari. In other words, I can log on to GMail via safari, but Google has their own very good app for accessing GMail (not via safari). Either way, you must log on.
    To be clear, I want to access some URL (app or safari) and then have the log on info filled in for me (like 1Password words, which is different than storing URL log ons in a database that you have to go look for).
    Any suggestions for accomplishing this?

    Try Roboform. You would need the buy the desktop version of it. I know they have the window version but I do not know if they make it for Mac. The iphone version of Roboform is free. The reason you need the desktop is because you would need to sync all your information from your desktop to your iphone. They said they are working on an update so you could entered the information directly onto your iphone. Check out their website for more information. www.roboform.com. I've been using Roboform on my desktop and I really love it. i am glad they made it for the iphone.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
    (Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
    In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
    If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
    Now launch your iTunes, and see if it is working now.
    If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

    I have the same problem.  Yahoo Sportacular aborts every time I try to open it.  It attempts to load and then the device goes right back to the home screen.  The problem started April 26 after I switched leagues from NHL to NBA. Closing all apps and Restarting doesn't solve solve the problem.
    All other apps on the iPad work fine.  IPad2, OS6.
    Any other suggestions?  I suppose I could delete the app from the iPad and try re-installing it
