3rd Party Utility Question

I did a clean install with Leopard and my Powerbook is awesome once more. It slowed down due to downloading a lot of apps as well as other garbage over the past 18 months. Now that it is running good does anyone recommend any 3rd party programs to keep it this way? I have used Cocktail and Mac Janitor but I have a feeling they are limited in what they do. Maybe I am wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as opinions.

At the moment do not use any utilities. Most have not been upgraded to Leopard yet and using them can definitely cause damage. Keep an eye out on the web sites of the utilities you are interesting in to see when they are Leopard compatible and don't use them until it is clearly stated it is ready for Leopard.

  • Disk Doctor Fails, S.M.A.R.T , anyway to fix with a 3rd party utility?

    On my server, I get a Disk Doctor Fails, S.M.A.R.T , anyway to fix with a 3rd party utility?
    Thanks

    If you're looking for help testing the Disk Doctor diagnostic tool, then you'll need to work with those folks and with the particular details of the SMART data being returned from the disk you're working with; the former and contents of the SMART data can vary by vendor.
    But given you're using a disk diagnostic and posting here, I'll assume that you're having I/O problems, and the "fix" is to replace the drive.
    If you're working with a dual-disk Mac Mini Server with software RAID enabled, the data can be recovered from the mirror.
    If you don't have a current backup and don't have mirroring enabled and need some data off the disk that's reporting SMART errors, then you may end up working with a disk data recovery package, or a data recovery firm.  (I wouldn't spend much time attempting this, too, as performing disk verifications and related activities on a questionable or failing disk can reduce the chances of recovering the remaining disk data.)

  • Use This Thread for All 3rd Party Extension Questions (Migrating from v3-v4)

    This thread is for the 3rd Party Extension developers as they update their extensions to be compatible with the new framework in SQL Developer v4.0.
    To get started with the process, consult this post from the JDeveloper team. If you have questions, post them here.

    What is the correct way to deploy migrated extension on local installation of SQL Developer 4 for testing?
    Could such operation be automated with help of JDeveloper 12c?

  • 3rd party ram question

    First of all Happy Thanksgiving to everybody reading!
    I know there are many threads on 3rd party ram so please humor me for a minute. All my friends are PC guys and can’t offer me Mac advice.
    I own a 2.66 Mac pro with 2x512 APPLE ram and 2x512 CRUCIAL ram
    I am a design student using adobe after effects as well as all of the creative suite. I really need to get up to 3 or 4 gigs of ram on my machine. Of course I am in college and broke as a joke. I am looking at getting 3rd party ram for the next two gigs. I already have both Apple and crucial ram in my machine, here are my questions:
    1) Is it a bad idea to have a rainbow of different manufactures ram in my Mac Pro? (aka is 1 gig apple 1gig crucial and maybe 2 gig transintl ram?
    2) The two more affordable memory companies I am looking at for my Mac Pro are Transintl ($398 2x1gig) and Datamem ($378 2x1gig). I can’t really understand why these two companies can be 100 dollars cheaper then crucial and almost 300 cheaper then Apple. Are these reputable ram suppliers and equal performance or is there a compromise I would be making going with the less expensive ram?
    I am so thankful that I have this forum of Mac Geniuses to help me out as this is my first Mac purchase. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

    As long as you install RAM in pairs it doesn't make any difference whether they are from the same or different manufacturers.

    I've used DataMem for over 10 years with complete satisfaction. Although they do not usually have the cheapest prices, their prices are competitive. They have a good return policy, provide a good product, and are knowledgeable of Mac RAM. I have no qualms recommending them based on my experience.

  • 3rd party headphones question

    I just opened up my brand new shure E5c headphones and plugged them in and sitting back waiting for this spectacular sound - not - dont get mme wrong they sound ok - but i was expecting to get a lil more bass response from them - has anyone else experienced this - and - would going back into itunes and tweeking the EQ there help out any - now its alot of treble coming out.... if no fix then these $499 babies has got to go back....

    The Shure E5c canaphones, or IEM's (In-Ear Monitors) are at the top of a small heap of similar products and do sound great. I have a pair and love them, but there is also much to know about how to best use them. There is no point in my duplicating effort on this subject since it has already been exhaustively researched.
    I suggest you navigate yourself to the Head-Fi forum. It is IMO the definitive discussion place for this topic:

    You will be able to search and find reams of valuable information and, ultimately, answers to your questions there.

  • 3rd party software question

    Can anyone recommend a RELIABLE software package that will allow me to use my iPhone from my desktop? Answering calls, dialing out and the like.
    I have looked at various software that claims to do so, but they usually have horrible reviews in the App Store. I've transitioned my business from a land-line to my cell and I would like to be able to dial out and answer without fumbling around with the iPhone and speaker. And it has to be compatible with OSX Mavericks too.
    Look forward to your responses.
    Thanks!

    Java updates? a plug-in that didn't carry over? run Windows via Fusion?
    You don't even mention what browser you were using and trying to use now... Firefox 3.0A (beta is due soon) usually works for me. Safari 3 - use the debug menu and user agent thing?

  • Maverick text expansion is mucked up. Solution? Or 3rd party?

    Big text expansion user. 300 of em, using hundreds of times a day. Loved Spell Catcher for 12 years, and switched last year to Apple's internal text expansion system (System Preferences: Keyboard: Text).
    But it's quite broken on my system (10.9.3); shortcuts don't expand, or only expand in one app but not another, or some days they work and others not. So I'm looking either for a solution, or suggestions from other Big Users for going back to one of the 3rd Party utilities.
    Question 1: is there a way start fresh with Apple's internal text expansion system. If so, I'll try that. I don't even mind retyping all of the text expansions by hand. I've taken screenshots of the 270 that I have, and am willing to just redo them, if that will fix it so that when I type the shortcut into the majority of Apple apps (mainly Messages, Pages, Mail, and Safari), they work. I'm savvy enough to know how to reveal hidden files, and I hear that this the broke file could be the .GlobalPreferences.plist. But it could be something else. More, I want to know if all of this will fix it, or if I'm better off going with a 3rd Party.
    Question 2: if some of you Big Users have seen the same issues, which 3rd Party utility are you finding the most robust. I already own TypeItForMe, and Spell Catcher is still in limbo (since the owner passed away). I'm open to whatever text expansion lovers suggest.
    Thanks as always.

    I like to use TextExpander

    Works for native apps, and third party app alike.

  • Do i have to be concerned with TRIM with a 3rd party SSD

    Im looking into getting a 3rd party SSD for my late 2008 aluminum unibody macbook
    i am under the impression that TRIM is off by default,
    Do i need to turn it on?
    will it mess up my mac running Yosemite?
    can i simply ignore the word TRIM all together ?
    thx, jay

    TRIM is off by default, because Apple doesn't enable TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs. Each SSD has a different firmware and operates differently and Apple presumably doesn't want to go through a bunch of testing on devices it has never shipped.
    It used to be you could use a 3rd party utility called "TRIM enabler," but Apple has improved security in OS X Yosemite and only runs signed kernel extensions by default. TRIM enabler isn't signed so it won't run, unless you disable kernel extension security (I don't recommend this).
    SSD firmware has improved over the years and it's debatable whether explicit TRIM support is actually necessary these days. I'd suggest ignoring TRIM and seeing how performance works out. If after 6 months, performance has degraded, then see if there's an easy way to enable it.
    That said, the machine is approaching 7 years old, it may be worth looking into a new MacBook Air instead of spending on a new drive

  • 3rd Party AC-Adapter Question

    I bought a 3rd Party AC-Adapter for my iPhone and I have a quick question.
    I know the iPhone is required to charge w5 volts and not more, but it says on the box that the *Output DC* is 12V, but it also says 5V DC (regulated). Is this okay? Can I trust it to charge my iPhone? Will it affect the battery meter in anyway?

    Apple was very slow to license its proprietary MagSafe connector to other manufacturers, though it appears they've finally done so now. For the longest time, it was just impossible to find anyone selling third-party MagSafe adapters, and those who did were clearly buying Apple adapters at full price and cutting the plugs off them. It made their products exorbitantly expensive. That's no longer the case; you can find junk MagSafe adapters online now for less than $25. I wouldn't buy one, but you may want to consider that option.

  • Reframing my Question for RESTful 3rd Party WebService

    My last posted question did not produce any feedback for what I was looking for, so I'm trying this again.
    I have a Driver entity, and an gpsVehicleData entity. Drivers can have one gpsVehicleData (relationship)
    In a grid screen I use; for THE most basic understanding I can get, I have one field I need updated from my 3rd party webservice. We'll call it gpsVehicleData.MotionStatus, and I need to use Driver.DriverID in the service to find his MotionStatus.
    This is the example connection snippet I was given by the vendor.
    Dim responseData As String = ""
    Dim uri As String = "http://ws.samplegps.com/DriverWebService.svc/drivers/"
    Dim request As System.Net.HttpWebRequest = Net.HttpWebRequest.Create(uri)
    request.Method = "GET"
    Dim companyLoginId As String = "12345"
    Dim username As String = "John"
    Dim password As String = "Doe4321"
    Dim auth As String = companyLoginId + "|" + username + ":" + password
    Dim authHeader As String = Convert.ToBase64String(System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(auth))
    request.Headers("Authorization") = authHeader
    Try
    Dim httpWebResponse As System.Net.HttpWebResponse = request.GetResponse()
    If httpWebResponse.StatusCode = Net.HttpStatusCode.OK Then
    Dim responseStream As IO.StreamReader = New IO.StreamReader(httpWebResponse.GetResponseStream())
    responseData = responseStream.ReadToEnd()
    Console.WriteLine(responseData)
    Console.ReadKey()
    End If
    Catch ex As Exception
    responseData = "An error occured: " & ex.Message
    Console.WriteLine(responseData)
    Console.ReadKey()
    Great. So this works when I run in it's own solution, and it pops up a console window and shows all data for each of my drivers. My problem is, I cannot find an example I can follow to update the Motion property in EACH ROW (each driver of my Screen with
    this snippet.
    (A button function seems appropriate instead of Validate method, but honestly as long as it works I don't care.
    This is the closest I have found but I'm not using Soap.
    LightSwitch - Consuming Web Services
    This is too, but much different than the first example!
    Calling Web Services to Validate Data in Visual Studio LightSwitch
    One example has something and not the other, and the other example has this but not that. Very frustrating for a new person!
    I do not need to dive into RIA right now which has been suggested before.
    I know I am not very knowledgeable in VB, but I need to use something applicable to my environment I can make more sense of. Thanks in advance

    From your description, you can consider using method above, as I know, this way is available/convenient for your situation.

  • 3rd party iPhone 5 adapter question

    I recently bought the iPhone 5 from AT&T and while i was there they said something that if i were to used a 3rd party adapter to charge my phone, i would leave a electric stamp in the phone and would void out any warranty and the same thing for 3rd party cases.  Now to me, it sort of sounded like a crock to try to get me to buy thier marked up products but is there any truth to this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Ok so let's work out how much I need to spend on adapters!
    We have 3 iPhone 4's in the house which I would love to upgrade to iPhone 5's plus 1 ipod touch which again I would love to upgrade.
    We have 1 speaker dock in the dining room, 1 in the living room and 2 upstairs! Now charging is not a problem cos I will get lightning cables with all the new devices!
    All of my docks are on many occasions being used at once!
    So I need £120 worth of adapters.... Which to be honest are a bit ugly and I'm not convinced will fit some of my devices!!!
    I got about £400 quids worth of equiptment which is now redundant unless I spend another £120!!
    I personally am only one of many whos is not happy with having to buy the adapter!
    I understand the need to move with times and thik the cable is brilliant! But common I bet it only costs a fiver to make!!!

  • Oracle RAC/3rd party clusterware support question

    Does anyone know if Oracle supports a Linux RAC system also running HP Ibrix clusterware? I was not able to find a list of certified 3rd party clusterware vendors that Oracle will support to run with RAC. If anyone has this information, please let me know. Thanks a lot!

    Thanks for the response, the versions would be RHEL5, 11g rac/rdbms, using HP Ibrix as 3rd party clusterware.
    I'll open an SR if I can't find the information I need on this forum, but I prefer to reserve opening SR's for technical issues and after I've done dilligence to find the information.
    If anyone has come accross this information, please let me know. Thanks!

  • Question about 3rd party Plug-ins....

    Is it just me or does Logic have some SERIOUS issues with 3rd party AU? For example, I can run Logic with all its own plugins and instruments just fine but the second I go to use my FM7, Novation Bass Station, or impOSCar I start experiencing bugs, crashes, etc... I have the latest drivers for these items, but they just don't seem to want to work well with Logic. Anyone else have this problem or know of a better way to use 3rd party plugins like this more safely in logic? Like maybe installing them as VST's instead of AU and putting them in a VST wrapper for Logic? It's honestly almost impossible to work with any of these devices in Logic for me without causing continual crashes!!

    why to pay for software then you can have a real thing?
    i pay only for hardware cos software is never good it not worth more than a few bucks. I have imposcar and vstation and they work just fine i use vstation alot never had a crash. are you sure that there are these au's for tiger?

  • 3rd party call log software questions

    Does anyone know of a Centro-compatible 3rd party call log manager that lets me delete/purge multiple entries at once, ie, something like each entry has a checkbox and if it's checked, you can select delete (or purge) and just those entries get removed? I guess I make a lot of phone calls, and it gets extremely cumbersome to delete/purge entries individually. I'd love to select multiple non-consecutive entries then be able to delete them all at once. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Mike

    I haven't seen any 3rd party programs that have the feature you are requesting. You can do an internet search to see if you can find one.

  • Quick Question on 64-Bit PS CS5 & 3rd Party Filters

    I assume that if one installs the 64-bit version of PS CS5 (or above), that all older 3rd party Filters/Effects will have to either be upgraded (if possible), or replaced by a newer one. Is that correct?
    In Premiere Pro CS5, that is the case with all Effects, and CODEC's, but I am about to install PS CS5 on a new computer, and just want to verify my suspicions.
    As I have a ton of older Filters, and many are now long gone from the market, if that is the case, I might then install both the 32-bit and 64-bit, or keep my older PS CS2 handy, just for those.
    TIA,
    Hunt

    If you want to use a plug-in in the 64 bit Photoshop, then yes - a plug-in has to be compiled for 64 bit operation.  There is absolutely NO WAY to use a 32 bit plug-in with 64 bit Photoshop and vice versa.
    Photoshop normally installs both a 32 and 64 bit version on a 64 bit machine, and older plug-ins are generally compatible with the 32 bit version.  I have some old ones I still use, and they're probably never going to become available on 64 bits.
    I suggest that unless you have a DIRE shortage of disk space, you install both 32 and 64 bit Photoshop.  There are some intangible reasons...  Sometimes bugs in OpenGL drivers show up in one and not the other.  In other cases sometimes you might want a slightly different configuration for one than the other (e.g., for testing).  For a long time, for example, I kept my 32 bit Photoshop CS5 with OpenGL disabled, so I could easily test things both with and without OpenGL.
    Again, if you don't lack disk space I recommend keeping the old Photoshop (CS2) around as well.  Sometimes you remember that something used to work a certain way, and you want to go back and check...
