5.1 Optical Output on Sound blaster ZxR - Some questions

This may have been discussed before but I still cannot seem to find the answer! Anyway, I have a ZxR connected via optical S/PDIF out to a home theatre processor which supports Dolby Digital and DTS.
The manual states:
DTS Connect is a real-time encoding technology from DTS,Inc. for interactive media and is only available on the PC platform. Itconverts any audio signal on the computer into 5.1 channel DTS format andtransports it via a single digital cable.
In the software I select dts connect as the encoder. In widows I select the ZxR S/PDIF option as the default playback device, however I don't see 5.1 as an option when I go to properties/default format dropdown. I'm not sure if this should only appear when I am looking at the properties for analogue speaker options?
Anyway, when playing CD's I get a dts signal to the processor when using Power DVD or DBpoweramp's CD Ripper software. Foobar and Windows Media Player throws up unrecoverable errors. Anyone know why?
I tried playing Dragon age 2 game. Analogue connections give good surround sound. Dts Optical gives no sound at all. Will this be true for all games?
Finally, playing DVD's with Power DVD gives dts surround via optical OK. but strangely in the Power DVD's sound options I have to set it as 6 channel. If I use S/PDIF as the output I get no sound? I was under the impression that the DVD player software needed to be in throughput mode? Again I'm confused at this.
So, any help on the above or experiences using the optical out to a surround processor welcome!
Thanks,
Paul

1 rule, if you want 5.1 than configure everything for 5.1 even if it's not obviously related to optical sound. 2nd if you want the ZxR DTS encoder to "work" you just have to select it in the creative SBX menu and like it says underneath in that window leave your other output settings (windows) to speakers. Troughput mode is there for the DVD player to send your sound straight to your external decoder and your sound card does nothing with it.

  • Creative Sound Blaster ZxR Optical s/pDIF Surround Recording

I just downloaded and installed Audacity for Windows version 2.x.x (the latest Audacity version).
I'm recording my xbox 360 game play sound and possibly some OTA Antenna receiver Dolby 5.1 Surround through a Toslink optical cable input on the daughter card of the SB ZxR sound card.
I'm using an Intel Core i7 2600 in an Asus p8p67 deluxe running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 using the Creative Labs Sound Blaster ZxR.
It works fine for Xbox 360 dashboard System Settings, Console, Digital Audio, set to Stereo (2 channel sound), but does not when xb360 is set for Dolby Digital 5.1 output since the Audacity drop down list box for the recording device has only the options for Stereo or Mono--even when 5.1 Surround is being output by the xb360.
When the incoming audio stream of 5.1 surround is recorded by audacity, the sampled sound is a huge amount of loud almost white noise of random digital static sound.
What audio device capabilities enumeration is being used to determine if incoming AC3 multichannel digital optical signals are more than stereo since this stream could, in theory, change on the fly depending on the program material being sent by the source device?
Is this the fault of the sound card driver from Creative Labs and is being reported improperly to MS Windows intermediate level device driver layers, that are in turn reported to audacity in its enumeration of the device's input stream contents?
To see the physical appearance of the Creative Labs Sound Blaster ZxR DBpro daughter card with its gray output Toslink female socket and its black input Toslink socket, do a Google image search as follows:
"sound blaster zxr" optical in dbpro "daughter card"
    http://goo.gl/ewO6ha
Is there any way to circumvent this sad state of affairs as a temporary work around for this problem with an interim software source code revision?
Could a software layer or function be added in audacity to parse the incoming data stream to determine the streams' characteristics (possibly on the fly -- in real time)?
When in the Creative Labs SB ZxR software control for mixer, etc, I have the settings for the card sometimes set to "listen to this device" for the Optical Toslink input port, and the sound coming out of the Speaker Outputs does not get sent to the Optical Output Toslink port to go to my Dolby digital audio receiver--my default Windows sound device--so that I cannot hear any of the supposed input audio stream at all.
Why is this effective pass through functionality not working?
I have two or more Hauppauge ComputerWorks High Definition Video capture devices with Toslink optical inputs, and they work fine to capture higher level multichannel AC3 optical streams.
What is wrong with the Creative Labs Soundblaster ZxR recording capability for such streams?
Can the driver be updated to fix these problems?
I have posted a few hours ago on the Audacity software's web forums to see if anyone there has any answers as to what can be done and what is happening and what is at fault in this process...
    http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewto...p?f=46&t=84846

I noticed the following when I more closely examined the SB ZxR Mixer settings...
The Toslink / optical s/pDIF input levels, even when an AC3 surround 5.1 channel stream is being input displays level control sliders for only Left and Right channels, when there should be 6 channels.
Creative Labs Dolby is improperly being handled within both their driver and application software for the sound card, or the card itself is designed NOT to handle properly multichannel AC3 in a dynamic fashion as provided by the source optical device.
    Why?

  • Sound Blaster ZxR latency problems

I bought SB ZxR last week and I'm using it for gaming, recording and just rehearsing guitar playing (my preamp is connected to sound card AUX in). I'm having trouble getting the sound in sync with my playing. In fact it's pretty much impossible to play properly, because the sound is always some 20-30ms late. I understand that when I output to optical output, then there might be some delay, but the delay is there also when outputting to analog outputs (though not so bad, but makes playing impossible still). I've tried all the settings in ZxR control panel and I haven't found working combination. Seems like the card is doing some processing to incoming signal in all occasions. I'm really disappointed, since the sound quality is otherwise excellent. I haven't had this kind of problems with my previous sound cards (Terratec 6fire, X-fi Elite pro, Auzentech Prelude). Prelude created latency when enabling DD live or DTS encoding, but disabling those made latency almost zero.
Has anyone tried playing any instrument live with this card and maybe found a solution for these latency problems?

    Incorrect in my experience.
I've just installed a Sound Blaster Zx - purchased because it is supposed to have near zip latency.
and it was so - with 92000 sample rate and 192 samples! Latency was near zero.
Before it was near 10-20 milliseconds with my old SB Fx 1270 THX
My keyboard is so fast it's weird getting used to it.
    Notes:
    1. select the Sound Blaster SBZ series ASIO, NOT the "Creative ASIO".
    2. Be sure to remove all old Creative software before installing. I tried it without doing this cleaning, and got odd silences in my browsers at random-seeming times. It seems to work better now.
    3. Measuring tool: DPC latency checker V 1.2.0
(CEntrance latency test did not work)
    Results: Average latency 26 microseconds,
peak latency 1120 microseconds when starting up Kontackt 5 (note: Micro, not Milli-seconds)

  • Sound Blaster ZXR Creative Audio Control panel

Hi. I bought a soundblaster ZXR. I uninstalled the driver for the old sound blaster X-Fi card, then shut off my computer and installed the ZXR card (which fits into a different slot than the X-Fi did), then restarted the computer and installed the software for the ZXR.
My situation is as follows: when I click on the Creative Audio Control panel, I get a message saying "The audio device supported by this application is not detected". I looked thru the internet and the general advice seems to be that the software for the older X-Fi card is not easily removed, and to remove it, I should uninstall the ZXR software, remove the ZXR card, re-install the old X-Fi card, then use some rather advanced techniques to make sure all of the software for the X-Fi card is uninstalled, then turn off the computer and take out the X-Fi card, then install the ZXR card, and re-install the software for the ZXR card. With some reluctance, I was about to do that, but then I noticed a folder called Sound Blaster Z Series was installed, so I opened it and clicked on Sound Blaster Z Series Control Panel, and a program opened up which allows me to make some changes to my sound set up.
My question is - When I click on the Creative Audio Control panel, am I supposed to get a message saying "The audio device supported by this application is not detected", because the Sound Blaster Z Series Control Panel is taking it's place? ...or does that error message tell me that there's something that I should address to avoid any future problems. I want to learn how to work with various sound programs, like sound forge, cakewalk, acid pro, kontakt, etc. and I want to start with a proper setup to help me avoid any unneeded frustrations. I have a fairly new computer with an ASUS P8H77 motherboard. Under Device Manager - Sound, Video and game controllers, I have the following entries:
    High Definition Audio Device
    Sound Blaster Audio Controller
    Sound Blaster ZxR
    Sound Blaster ZxR DBpro
I right clicked the High Definition Audio Device, then disabled it, but that didn't help so I enabled it again.
    Thanks.

The Creative Audio Control Panel is a single entry leftover from your old X-FI. Uninstall just that. Then you can make a shortcut to the other you were speaking off and put that shortcut wherever you wish. I uninstalled an X-FI before and I had that control panel left over even after uninstalling what I thought was everything.

  • Sound Blaster ZxR - Whats going on, where is it?

Hello everyone looking for some answers here.
Wanting to know when the ZxR is going to be out in the UK. Everything I have seen has spoken about early December, this is now the last day of. So what's going on here? The release date has passed and I still cannot find anything explaining it from you guys? I have been waiting nearly a year to upgrade my faulty Sound Blaster X-Fi that has finally died after years of hardcore service and to be honest none of the recent creative cards have been worth swapping it for. Honestly if this card isnt out soon I'll just have to buy a Xonar or something I have always been a creative customer never bought anything other than your sound cards but this is just a joke now and is definitely going to lose your company customers.
I would like some actual information on when it is coming out or if you don't know the proper reason why it isn't out. If its due to faults or issues your customers would want to know this, it would make them happier that you care about quality of use for example. Ignoring us just makes people get annoyed and turn away
    Look forward to a reply
    Greg M
    Glasgow, UK

That's still the bare minimum of information, and still as vaige as it can be... Can't you guys do better than this? where the f... is the customer satisfaction? this is almost funny how bad this is :/
I suppose I will wait 14 more days if I cant get it by the 18th I'll just go get a card from another company. It wont be what I want but atleast I CAN get one and the customer service will be a bit better Creative you need to pull yourselves together I am very disappointed with this company lately. Can't even get a good sound card from my favourite manufacturer. I will just have to keep listening to my Zen Vision:M YES I HAVE ONE OF THEM TOO!!!

  • Output Immpedance Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Hi!I need to know the immpedance for de back outputs in the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX.
    Thanks!?

(Re: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS - No Sound? Try this:
This is a software package created by a user, Daniel K. which includes most all of the software updates as well as the newest or second to newest driver for your card. This will install everything you need to use that card.
Even if you had the original install Cd, this package is better, as it fixes some of the original incompatibilites with the software and includes their newer versions as well.
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-...28/td-p/535299
The package is great. It installs fairly quickly for a package of its size. I have used it myself for quite a while so I know that it works very well.
After installation be sure that you have at least? a two speaker set plugged into the green jack on the back of the card. Sometimes people plug their speakers into the wrong jack and then feel they have no sound for an unknown reason.

  • Digital Output on Sound Blaster Live!

    Hello All,
Usually I'm over complaining in the Zen Micro section, but I've got a quick question. I have a Sound Blaster Li've! 5. with a digital speaker output on it. It's in the form of a headphone jack (standard computer speaker jack). I want to connect this to my Yamaha 5. Home Theater reciever. For digital, it has an RCA jack. Is there some adapter I can use to go from the headphone type jack to the RCA so I can get 5. digital out of my computer? Thanks all for your help. And Creative, I know I complain alot about your Zen Micro, but you do make some quality sound cards!
ThanksMessage Edited by AMD4MBC on 02-7-2005 0:0 PM

You would need a /8" mono minijack to coaxial(RCA) cable. It should be easily obtain from your local stores or you could get it from the online store.

Just leave out the DIN part as that's for the compatible creative speaker.

Could use some help. I am senior citizen and this is not helping my senility. Thanks!!
Are there error messages coming out?
Which operating system are you using?
NOTE: Samplerate and bit-depth for ASIO in Audigy series cards is fixed to 6-bit/48kHz (and 24-bit/96kHz). If your 'project' is set for 44.kHz, it's possible that you can't get it started.
If you can't get the software started because of ASIO error then, you could try
    - temporarily rename ctasio.dll (this file can be found under Windows\System32\) so the software/system can't find it anymore
    - install asio4all driver which supports all samplerates your card is able to ( http://www.asio4all.com )

  • Sound blaster ZXR not detected

    Hi,
I just popped in the ZXR, both cards, in my computer after i uninstalled the old xfi Xtreme music physically and all software. In bios the card is seen in the slot that i've put it in. When i boot in windows it doesn't find the card in the device manager or if i install the driver.
    Things i already tried:
    - disabled fast boot
    - in the bios meniu for PCX OpRom settings: first - legacy support only; second try - UEFI support only in the.
    - default settings in bios
    - disconnected the 2 cards and left just the main in.
    I'm running a Z87 chipset motherboard.
    here is a dxdiag file:

Any more suggestion about what to do?

Thanks, for the help! The problem was me... i was trying to install another driver that wasn't for my sound card. i just installed the driver from the cd in the box and it worked. The funny thing is that windows didn't see any new hardware in the pc but after i installed the driver from the cd the sound card appeared.
    Again thanks!

  • Sound blaster zxr mic problem

    Hi,
I know this issue has been discussed, but still no solution.
Problem is that when i use mic on skype, my friends says my voice sounds damped and bass rich. It helps if i turn crystalizer off but then it gets static noise from somewhere(like fan humming).
Too pricy card to have this kind of issues unsolved.
    Software related?

Can you retry your ZXR microphone with Skype again but with the SBX ProStudio effects turned off? I think your noise cancellation wedge setting in the control panel may be too narrow, so you get the muffled voice sound instead of a light, airy sound.

  • Recording audio from a digital source on sound blaster M

This is my setup: DVD player > optical cable > optical-in on Sound Blaster MP3+
I'm trying to record the STEREO (not 5. or DTS) audio off a DVD I have, but it won't record or playback anything on either the SPDIF input or Wave/MIDI/CD input when selected. Everything else works fine (analog, line-in, etc.). Another thing I noticed is that all of the inputs seem to be connected to my built-in regular laptop microphone. When I press record in any .wav recording program, I can hear my voice/other background noise.

The issue I see with iTalk and similar iPod apps is that the iPod has no line-level input, so you'd have to use one of the earbud/microphone combinations or an external microphone like this one which will be limited as to quality. There are some other options here. But if you want pro quality, and particularly want to tap straight off of a mixing console, a device like the Alesis is going to be necessary, though there may be something less expensive that I can't find.
If a microphone works for you, then iTalk might be fine. There's a freeware version of iTalk, iTalk Lite, you can try, to see if it will do the job. It doesn't have the advanced playback controls and has a limit of 2MB per recording, but it should allow you to test it out. Voxie is another possibility.
    Regards.

  • Optical Input on Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E with Logitech z-5

So i plugged in my Optical cord into my new sound card the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E and it worked only in the Front right, Front left, Front centre, and the subwoofer. Now i hear i need a external decoder... but then again that my sound card should decode it as well... the place i bought my card recemended a optical cord for my card?with the?speakers i have?(the?Logitech Z-5500) How much are decoders? What should i do next? Creative seams to have limited support especialy on optical inputs.

I must have answered something like that in another thread sometime ago, but here goes:
A single SPDIF connection, optical or coaxial, will only transfer stereo in analog form; no rear or centre channels!
There are two ways you can get all speakers playing via such a connection:
() Get your speakers to upmix the audio source to play on all fi've of them
    (2) Output a Dolby Digital (AC3) or DTS signal. These contain the multichannel information encoded in the stereo signal. A suitable decoder (such as the one contained in the Z-5500) will be able to analyze the signal. Unfortunately, this is something you can mostly find in movies.
So, to sum it up, no natural everyday multichannel sound over one SPDIF (e.g. no EAX, directsound3d etc.)

  • Sound Blaster 2 ZS optical out qu

hey guys, query for you all
i have a sound blaster audigy 2 ZS (no front panel,, not platinum)
now i want to hook this up to an Amplifier - heres a link to the back of it.
    http://www.yamaha.com/YECDealerMedia/adgraphs/products/RXV400_back.jpg
what type of cable do i need to buy ? the amplifier (at this stage) is solely for the PC, so im assuming i can connect it to the 3rd input down ? (Digital input CD).. would it be some kind of 3.5mm to optical ? or 3.5mm to RCA ? is there much difference ?
if someone can hunt on www.dse.co.nz for the type of cable i require it would be REALLY appreciated, i dont expect anyone to do this however, the name of the cable required would be fine
please tell me if im totally wrong about my approach, and if i require an alternati've soundcard ?
    Thanks !

You have almost answered your own question. You will need three cables, with RCA pin plugs on one end, to connect to the multi channel inputs on the amp. The other end of the cables will need to be stereo miniplugs, for the sound card. On the card, one jack will be front left and right, the next one down will be rear left and right. I'm not familiar with your particular card, but there will be yet another jack that will use one stereo "side" for the center channel and the other side for the subwoofer. Check your sound card instructions for which jacks to use. That is the exact hookup I used when I had an Audigy card and it worked great. (I have a 7. system now, with Xfi Extreme Gamer card.) The analog inputs have always been the superior, lossless way to connect a sound card to a Home Theater type amp, such as yours and others. So many people want that seemingly nice, easy, and convinient single cable hookup to the digital input on their am
    ps.
What they don't realize is that the DD 5. encoded signal needed for that is a highly compressed, lossy signal, and thus it is not the best for most uses. Until very recently, Creative has always only out put lossless, 2 channel, digital PCM from the card's digital output. Only if the card was set to "Passthrough" could you get DD 5. over the digital output and that was only for movies using software DVD players. All other sources would be mixed-down stereo. I have always "bitten the bullet" and ran the bundle of analog cables to my system (Now eight cables) but the payback is in the best possible sound, such as what Creative wants us to hear. (Not to brag, but my system sounds totally awesome!). In any case, if you can't find cables with miniplugs on one end and RCA on the other, you should be able to find adapter cables or connectors so as to make up cables that you need. You will be rewarded for your trouble with great sound, in multichannel splendor, from all sources. The extremely low impedence output from the card will assure that you get no audiblr losses, even from long cable runs. Any movies you might want to run on your machine need to use any of the good DVD playing software such as Power DVD, etc. These "players" can be configured to have your soundcard do the decoding so you will get DD sound from movies also.
Sorry for the long-winded reply but I hope others will see this too and re-consider hooking up their systems this way instead of the digital hookup and the disappointment of only getting 2 channel sound.
    Hope this helps,
    Phil

  • Optical Out From a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Exter

Hello, I know there has been numerous posts about digital out and other things of the sort. The other day I hooked up my sound blaster li've to my 5. yamaha av receiver using an optical cable. The only problem is that no sound is being output through the optical cable, even when I turn on the speaker settings to digital output only. The only way I can get sound through the optical is when I use a dolby digital and or dts encoded dvd in windows media player. I am a?very advanced sound electronics user and was wondering if there is something that I have to do within the program or something else. Thanks for the help. Alex

Hello, Well after spending some time I was able to figure out my own problem. If there is anyone else that has a li've external that ever has a problem, hopefully this will help you out. So I have my sound blaster hookep up optically to a yamaha a/v receiver. First thing make sure that you are in fact getting a signal through your optical cable, the end of the cable should light up red, indicating that light(audio signal) is infact being sent through cable. Next, make sure your receiver's input mode is either set to auto or pcm. That way, your reciever will automatically detect your optical and or coaxial cable. At this point, even if you don't set the speaker settings to digital out only, you should still get sound through digitally. If you do not get sound, switch it over to digital out only, and uncheck the synchronize with control panel, and like in my case, it should work. One common misconception is that optical either only works with digital sources, or does not make a difference in sound quality, and to let you know, that is a big farse. After solving my problem, I was listening to stereo music and switching between analog and pcm on my receiver, and let me tell you, it makes a HUGE difference. The digital cable, because it is transferred through light signals, does not compress the sound that much, even with stereo sources, so if you are able to, I highly recommend using optical and or coaxial, but optical is preffered. I hope this helps anyone who ever needs it. Alex Lopilato

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??
