5 times in the shop

Hello,
I was wondering if people have been having as much trouble as I have with my mac. I bought it in march 2007 as an early graduation gift, so the model they say it is is a late 2006 model. I had it for about 6 months and the gray screen with a question mark showed up when I started up. The apple store told me it was a bad HD so they replaced it. Three months later it did the same thing so it had to be replaced again. Then about two months from that fix the HD decided it was going to randomly reset itself so I had lost all of my college final work. So I took it back to the store to find out why it did this and if I would be able to get my work back (which was a negative)while I was there I also had them fix a crack in the casing along the side. All was fine until about eight months later when the crack reappeared, so I had it fixed again.
Now it is sent in once again because it decided it no longer wanted to run off of the battery. It still charges the battery and will run off of the charger but it wont run from the battery, which is still good because it runs my friends computer just fine. Since I was in the store I am also having them fix the crack once again.
So my question is shouldn't this qualify as a lemon or is other people having the same problems as me?
Thanks

Hi, my personal opinion would be to call Apple Corp & speak with a customer service rep. I assume you have all documentation from the repairs etc,,they are very helpful & understanding..

• If you take it out of the shop ..you are on your own buddy

sorry if this is posted in the wrong place..?
I am about to buy my first ever Apple Mac ( iMac ) when the current freezing / screen problems have been resolved
as a total newbie to the world of Mac's , I would like to walk into the Apple Store, and buy the machine
at the same time get the shop to set up the machine I am buying so it can be checked out .
The reason I am concerned about checking the new iMac out in the store is that
its a well known fact that '' customer services '' is not regarded highly here in Thailand
and I see many instances where the customer has been totally let down by so called
warranties and guarantees , from the smallest retailer to major Thai based International
companies . There’s numerous forums here in Thailand that show the vast number of
complaints , some related to Apple Suppliers, the norm here in Thailand seems to be if you take it
out of the shop , you are on your own buddy. I am not saying all Thai Apple suppliers are
Letting down their customers, but the complaints show many are.
So my main concern is that knowing when I do buy my new iMac , once I leave the
apple Store , and may be have a problem , the chances of the apple Store being willing to offer what’s only
considered by others as a normal response of yes sir just bring it in so we can look and help put any
problems right , may well be missing here in Thailand . One problem here is that when you are
purchasing any thing from a computer to a car the Thai way of selling has only one route .. Just tell the customer
what he wants to hear and forget about the actual facts, So when I ask the Apple sales person .. any problems I can
bring it back ... ? Yes Sir you can , but the reality is more like .. ive got a problem with my new iMac.. can you
help ..? Not sure sir I have to see my boss leave it here and I will call you, this is normally followed by a long
Period of silence...
I was in the Apple shop yesterday ( the sales assistant did not really seem know too much about the Products) as when I asked how much an Apple Modem was , his reply was we don't sell them as all Macs come with an internal modem ..?, but they did have the new iMac on display , 20 & 24 inch , and If I wanted he would get one from the stock room and set it up in the show room so I could see / inspect / try it out. so as you can see it will be very important to me to set up the new machine to inspect / try it out as much as possible , before taking it home..
So here’s my newbie question... As I really want to try out the iMac in the store before I take it home what things would I need to look for / try out
( may be relating to the current iMac problems ) and any general Mac related things to try / check out ..? as a total Mac newbie a simple step by step
idea would be most appreciated , along with any comments or advice you can offer this Newbie .
Thanks

\- Check for freeze-ups -- I'll defer to others for advice on how.
\- Check for pixel defects -- examine the screen carefully with both solid white and solid black backgrounds. An in-store, pre-purchase inspection is your ONLY protection against getting stuck with bad pixels.
\- Check for acceptable color and brightness uniformity. Examine the overall appearance of the screen with solid white, gray, and aqua-blue backgrounds.
\* Many (most? all?) 20" iMacs have top-to-bottom color and brightness gradients with "washed-out" colors near the bottom edge of the screen.
\* Many (most? all?) 24" ALU iMacs have left-to right brightness gradients and/or a yellow tint in the center/right of the screen.
Here are some photos that should help you recognize brightness/color gradients:

Not surprised that the "Shop" tab is missing. Darn.
Well can you try to access it's "sister" website: astralmusic.com and astralmusicshop.com?
Since you are awesome with the "Flash" can you investigate if this website has a issue withis this "Flash" too?

• If i pre-order the iphone5 will i receive it the same time as when it comes out in the shops?

if i pre-order the iPhone5 from the apple online store, will i get it the same time as it gets released in the shops on september 21st? please help, thanks

If you have already pre-ordered the iPhone 5, check your order. If you made the first batch of pre-orders, it should say delivery September 21st. If that is the case then yes, you will get the iPhone 5 on your doorstep on launch date. If you have yet to pre-order, you will probably not make the first batch and might have to wait for shipment

• TS1702 Recently I updated the shopping list/grocery list app that I purchased awhile back. When I try to add an item it kicks me back to the desktop.I have rebooted & reinstalled several times. No success.

Recently I installed the update for the Shopping List/Grocery List app that I purchased awhile back. When I try to add an item to the list it throws me out of the app to the desk top on my ipod touch. I have tried rebooting the device and reinstalling the app several times, Does anyone have any ideas how to get it to work or to go back to the old app before they updated it?

Have you contacted the developer/went to their support site? Maybe it just is not compatible with iOS 6.
You can try what yo have not already tried of the following:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

You can try basic steps like these in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and only cookies from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

my iPod touch needs to be restored. however, all of my movies/apps/songs/photos are not backed up on my computer because the shop on my computer does not work. can i still get the memory on my iPod touch 32gb back?

If you weren't able to sync the purchases to a computer previously and now your iPod needs to be restored so you can't sync it now, then you may be out of luck and will need to purchase your content again. Officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
Good luck.

• I bought an iPad 5 days before my mum did. My one set up from switching on. My mums what a nightmare had to take it back to the shop for them to down load iCloud. How can they sell 2 different products?

I bought an ipad2 5 days before my mum. Mine started to set up from the minute I switched it on. However my mums what a nightmare. After many hours of trying to solve the problem and searching the Internet we took it back to the shop. This one had to have iclouds downloaded from iTunes. Was told that they are the same? When you looked at the boxes the discription on the back was different and mine had a tiny silver cloud sticker on it which ment it didn't have to down load th iOS soft ware from iTunes. I wish I had known at the time that there was 2types out there as I would have asked for my mums to be the same as mine. Not happy.

Sounds like one unit had iOS 5, the other had iOS 4. Unfortunately it happens that some units are shipped from the factory at different times with different Operatin Systems installed.

Hi BC,
I have an issue with BC. When the shopping cart is used it takes stock out of inventory and holds it, regardless of whether or not a customer proceeds to purchase. OK.
To make matters worse, the stock is only cleared from the shopping cart when the customer closes the browser - not when they close the shopping window.
Now lets say a customer doesn't close their browser for a month - it happens! .. when their stock is finally returned it may throw out our stock levels that have in the meanwhile been adjusted. So their stock will be added on top of an accurate stock take, putting stock in that isnt really available.
This is causing us mayhem.
We have not yet seen if stock is actually returned at all. In the test we did today where we filled a shopping cart then closed the browser without making a purchase, the stock was not returned immediately. So we dont even know when it will be returned - thats IF a customer actually closes their browser. Any solutions out there?
Jo

Hi there,
The way stock is managed in this situation is desirable for many in that case otherwise shopping on a site and adding to cart would not be viable or use friendly.
What you mention about not closing a browser though is a case that is not true. IF you go into the shop settings in the admin you can see the cart restore timer which is by default 24 hours but you can change this to as low as 1 hour if you wish.

• Should the vendor in the Shopping Cart be updated from the Sourcing Cockpit

Hi All,
hopefully an easy question for someone to answer.
When a vendor is assigned in the Sourcing Cockpit and the Purchase Order is created should the vendor be updated in the linked shopping cart?
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris,
All questions are welcome irrespective of the criticality so you are free to ask anything related to SRM.
The vendor will not get updated in the shopping cart if you assign a vendor at the time of sourcing while creating a P.O. The same can be checked out by selecting the Source of supply / service agents link in the check status for a particular shopping cart.
The source of supply field will only be populated when you assign the vendor at the shopping cart level and not during the P.O creation.
Hope this will make you clear.

• Tried the shopping cart trick, with mixed results...

Since I have a recently-added false collection on my credit report, any hard pull is going to result in an automatic denial. I'm working on getting that removed, but I also want to get some more trade lines added to my credit reports. TU is currently 615 and EQ is 624. I had been reading up on the shopping cart trick on these forums (to get credit accounts with soft pulls) and decided to try a few different ones. Here's how it went. 1. Express: I actually shop at this store fairly frequently, and buy my business casual clothes there. I put a couple of pairs of jeans in my cart, and went to checkout. I entered my information, and immediately got the preapproval popup. I applied and got a $500 credit line. Not bad. Plus I saved 20% on my jeans, and got an additional $20 off. Created my account on Comenity's website, and hit the LUV button: 7-10 day message. 2. Overstock.com: This is the one everyone says to try first, because they give generous limits and automatic CLI's. I decided to be adventurous and put a $1,200 patio set in my shopping cart, to see if that would have any effect on the credit line. I went to checkout, entered my details, got the popup and applied. This time it was only a $250 limit. I created an account on Comenity's website, and hit the LUV button, but no luck. Another 7-10 day message. I can't find anything on the site for $75 or less (30% of the limit) that I want to buy right now. I'm a bit disappointed in the limit, but we'll see how it goes over time. 3. Sportman's Guide: There is nothing I'd buy on this website, but since it's a VISA card, no need to bother. I put a couple of items in my cart, proceeded to the checkout, and got nothing. I tried several times yesterday, clearing my browser history each time. Still nothing. Just for giggles, I had my partner, who has amazing credit, try it as well, and still no popup. This might be one that you have to checkout as a member instead of a guest. 4. Walmart: Backed by Synchrony (amazon.com store card), not Comenity. Heard that they have the shopping cart trick as well, so I decided to try it: No luck. Couldn't get the popup to come up, and there's no way to check out as a guest. 5. Dillards: Another shopping cart trick that is not a Comenity card, but is backed by Wells Fargo. Added some stuff to the cart, went to check out, nothing. I think this might be because I used to be a Dillard's employee several years ago, and you had to get a Dillard's credit card to get your employee discount. They would give you a prepaid version of it if you couldn't qualify for the real deal, and I think somewhere in the system I still have that prepaid card. 6. Kirklands: Another Wells Fargo card. I couldn't get the popup to come up here either. Then again, I don't have a local store, so it's not all that important to me. So my takeaway was two new tradelines and a $750 bump in overall credit lines. It's better than nothing!

I registered for an online account right away and hit the luv button and got it increased to $2300. Haven't had much success getting an increase since. My DW tried it this week and she also got the pop up and got approved for $2000. She registered online and hit the luv button and got it bumped to $2200 hit it again and got the 7-10 day message. About Sportsman guide I have tried it constantly and never get the pop up and neither has my DW gotten the pop-up so it seems our reports don't fit their criteria because my sister tried it and she got the pop up and so did one of my uncles.

• Will not access the Shopping Cart

iTunes just started doing something very odd. For the passed two or three days I can not get into my Shopping cart. When you click on Shopping cart, at the top you can see it saying "Accessing Music store" and then it just stops. Everything else works fine I just can't get my Shopping cart to come up. Someone please help me.

• ITunes 9: a lament for the shopping basket

Much as I love the concept of a wish list, my shopping basket WAS my wish list before.
I don't like one-click buying, so I turned that off and added stuff to my shopping basket as I went. Now the option to use a basket has been removed from iTunes.
So what's the problem? Very simple: the shopping basket was available from any window within iTunes regardless of what I was doing at the time.
And now it's not. It's only available from the iTunes home page.
User Centric Design department mush have been on holiday when they finalised iTunes 9.
Edit: Just seen the drop-down next to my account link. Sorry, but that's just nasty and nothing compared to having an actual shopping basket.
Message was edited by: Grahame Fendle

Just to follow up on this, it's my belief that this change fundamentally breaks iTunes and makes the concept of a store analogy no longer valid.
Imagine going into your local shop, picking something up and being charged for it right there and then. Of course I will be writing to Apple using the links provided.
I'm not going to test it, but for all I know when you click on 'buy' the selected item may well end up in a shopping cart where I can confirm my purchase, but if it's an instant transaction then I'd be very upset. I wonder what the OFT might have to say about such behaviour in an online store likely to be used by millions who are not as computer literate as myself and many others here.
The whole idea of a shopping basket is that you can change your mind. There should, and must be, a shopping basket in addition to, not instead of, a wish list.
One friend of mine who spends a great deal of money on iTunes won't be buying anything else until such time as the old functionality - turn off one-click, use a shopping basket - is returned. I don't consider myself to be a heavy purchaser of music, but I've got 1200 items in my purchased list since I converted to Mac last December. There are seven items in my wish list, and they'll be staying there until such time as this is repaired. The only purchases I'll make are those that I've pre-ordered.
What with clear reported issues with Genius, Sharing and other matters, I would expect a fix for this in very short order from Apple, but what with the problems with Snow Leopard, and fixes required in just a few days, I'd have to say it's a little disappointing.
This really is a classic case of breaking something that didn't need fixing in the first place.
There's also a length discussion about the same matter over here:

Restore the phone using iTunes. First time restore your backup. If the problem is not fixed restore again, and this time set up as New.

• Back from the shop...again

I love my iMac and wouldn't give it up for anything (well, maybe a quad).
My rev A had the main board replaced 4-5 months ago for the leaking capacitors. Almost immediately I noticed the milky white line that seems to be common in the lower left corner. I didn't want to take it in again so I lived with it.
Two weeks ago my computer started going dead randomly and it got progrssively worse. Back to the shop for a new power supply (leaking capacitor in it), and a new display to fix the white line.
All seems well so far. I have only had it since this morning though.
Just thought that I would post an update.

mwachel: My Rev A needed a new power supply about a month ago. I first smelled burning and a day later it went dead. Fortunately, I have an authorized reseller/warranty repair business locally and I got it back 3 days later.
What symptom did you experience that led you to know that your capacitors leaked? The repair guy checked my capacitors and said they were all ok. But I've noticed only what I can call a sort of "sizzle" sound every few moments which lasts for about 5 seconds and then goes away for a minute or two. You have to listen kinda close because it's rather low-pitched. I back up everything about every 10 days or so (all I add are itunes and occasional photos).
I hope you're good to go now for a long while. I think that if it soon happens again to you you might want to ask for a new computer. Three times in a year would qualify as a "lemon" if it was a car! walt
