5 users to contribute content from window based PC's to iWeb site

I would like to create a website in iWeb '09 which will require multiple users to contribute/publish content, but the other site collaborators do not have Macs, just Windows-based PCs.

Welcome to the discussions. Even if your five users all had Macs running the same version of iWeb, it would still be difficult for them to contribute content — because iWeb's site data is stored in a Domain file on a Mac. This Domain file would need to be exchanged around the users for updating — which is not very practical for Mac users and impossible for PC users.
Instead of using iWeb, I suggest using a web-based design app accessible from PCs and Macs. Some of these apps have specific features for sharing whilst others may be sharable by giving out the single username/password to the other users. But this could be problematic if there's only a single email address associated with the username.
This first one is specifically designed for sharing:
Backpack
Google Sites claims to make creating and sharing a group website easy:
Google Sites
This one focusses upon "social networking":
Ning
...With Ning you can add tabs and sub-tabs to specific pages and external links via the Tab Manager feature. Mouse-over the menu items at this Ning site:
http://www.openwineconsortium.org
And their tab manager:
http://blog.ning.com/2008/08/a-new-tab-manager-early-next-week.html
Other web-based design apps are:
SnapPages
Yola
Viviti
Jimdo
Weebly
Sampa
Wix
If a sharable blog format is acceptable, you could hyperlink from your iWeb site is to a free Posterous blog. Posterous has "dead simple group blogging by email" where each of your three possible blogs can now have multiple contributers — see more here.
General info about Posterous blogs is in their FAQ. ...Group members can contribute text, photos, sound and video files, etc. to a Posterous blog simply by email. Plus there is the usual commenting capability plus comment alerts for the account holder.

  • Content title/filename issues when contributing content from Outlook

    Hi,
We have a critical issue with content title/file name when contributing content from within MS Outlook (2003) using the Desktop Integration Suite (11g) component.
Either by copy-paste, or by drag-n-droping of an email item to a Contribution Folder in CS, the filename and content title are displayed as coded characters, instead of the email subject.
    e.g
If an email item with subject "Oracle Magazine - July/August 2010" is being copied to CS contribution folders, its title should be "Oracle Magazine - July/August 2010" and file name something like "Oracle Magazine - July/August 2010.msg". Instead it gets a name that looks like this "0881FC3B-F733-46D3-869F-AB73F352D25F.msg" and title "0881FC3B-F733-46D3-869F-AB73F352D25F".
Is there a solution for this, any configuration we are missing here so that we get a readable title and/or filename.
    thanks in advance

    Hi Srinath,
We are using UCM 10gR3 (10.1.3.5.1). We tried both DIS 10gR3 (build 8.xxx) and 11g (build 9.xxx) with no result.
And I am not able to find something in the documentation that could lead to a solution.

  • Transition from Windows-based network to Linux-based

I am looking to make the switch from a Windows based network to a Linux based one. Currently the network includes a Windows 2003 server which acts as a domain controller and file server, a network shared printer (Canon 2300N) and 7 clients running Windows. Several other Windows-based clients connect remotely via RDP.
I would like to setup a server to act as a domain controller, file server, and (if possible) terminal server. The clients should be authenticated via the server and have access to the files stored on it (via ssh?).
Here are several points that I was wondering about:
All the clients use Outlook, some of the clients run Quickbooks Pro and another program called Tentant File Pro. I was thinking about replacing Outlook with Thunderbird (I contact, calendar, and tasks) and I know that Wine can't run Quickbooks and Tenant File Pro so I may have to use VirtualBox/VMWare because these applications can't be replaced by native Linux versions.
I need an adequate backup solution for the files on the server running as a daily backup.
Should I use webmin to administer the server?
What antivirus / firewall solution should I use for the server and the clients?
How can I allow remote clients the login to the server to be able to run applications (Outlook, Browser, Tenant File Pro, etc.) remotely on the server?
What is the best solution for this? And what would be the least painful way of making the transition for the users?
I know this is a lot, but any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Probably not Arch if you just want to dump all these questions on the community rather than research it all individually yourself.
Perhaps Turnkey Linux would be suitable to get you up and running:

(NB: Arch is the COMPLETE opposite of Turnkey Linux)

The link Kappy posted should give you peace of mind. I can tell you from personal experience that both the Canon EOS 550D and the Nikon D90 work seamlessly with OS X (10.6.4).
You can use iPhoto, Image Capture or Adobe Bridge CS4 to import and organise your photos. I would definitely recommend Bridge over the others, but Image Capture (pre-installed on all versions of OS X) is surprisingly good and offers a range of features.
    Enjoy your shiny new Mac!

  • Can anybody recommend a UK based host for an iWeb site?

I need to know where to host my iweb site with the least technical difficulty.I have seen on ichat HomeExcellence which sounds ok buy it is US based.

24/7 tech support is a lot more important than location. I've been using Host Excellence for 7 years now and haven't found any reason to change.
Their associated service - IXWebhosting - offers really good value for those who only have one site but need the option fo another dedicated IP address. Their tech support has been really helpful to those to whom I have recommended this service as you will see here...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Website-Hosting.html
Most tech support people don't seem to understand how iWeb creates sites and can be rather unhelpful.
One of the main advantages of the above mentioned services is the fact that they allow you to create a root folder with the same name as your site in iWeb. This goes a long way to helping you understand the concept of the root folder and the file/folder structure on the server.

  • Transfer i-tunes content from Windows to Mac

After being a life long PC user my wife just bought me a Mac Book Pro. How difficult, or should I let the Apple Store techs transfer all my songs, movies, apps from my I-tunes on my Windows PC to my Mac Book? I have back up DVDs of my songs in I-Tunes if that would help. I never backed up my movies, which I know I should do ASAP! Any help and/or suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Apple store will transfer all your user data, not only the media files.

  • Blank slides & missing content from Windows PPT to the mac

When I open PowerPoint files from the PC on the mac in PowerPoint 2011, there are blank pages/missing content. When I open in PowerPoint 2008 on the mac it's fine. I've removed duplicated fonts, and checked under a different user profile - but it still persists. Ideas??? I don't really want to use 2008 for slides...

Suggest you post on the Microsoft Mac forums since you're not having issues with any Apple product:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac

  • Switching iPhone from Windows based computer to Apple

Could one switch an iPhone from a Windows XP computer to an Apple seamlessly, or are you stuck with whichever system you initially sync up with? I will be getting my iPhone 3GS on the 19th, and shortly thereafter (not sure of the timeframe) I will be in a position to purchase a new laptop. I'm contemplating getting a Macbook and I'd like the option of syncing up on either the Windows desktop or the Macbook at my convenience.

It's cake. Just back it up on your XP box just in case.
I got an MBP, plugged in my phone, it transferred some purchased stuff, kept all my settings and such, basically it was just the iPod functionality that changed; I had to put my iTunes library on my new computer and resync the songs/videos/etc. That's about it.
All of my apps and email and other phone specific settings were left alone.
It may be worth noting that I was syncing with Exchange over the air, so my Mail was not synced through iTunes. Your mileage may vary.

  • Move email content from windows to ipad?

I just recently bought an ipad for my mom and she had to change her email provider. to get high-speed.  How can she save all of her email and contats from her windows pc (and the old provider) to her ipad?

    OK.
Your provider supports IMAP and POP, so, easy way first.
Go to System Preferences>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and enter the ntlworld account, SMTP for sending and IMAP for receiving (use 'other' as the account type), this will activate the account on the Mac and (depending on how set up on the PC) either sync all of the mail, or only the new mail. Post back and tell me which.

  • View external content from window within site?

Issue solved by inserting an inline frame

    Hi There
Admittedly, I've never really used the ability to actually view the URL from the RoboHelp Explorer pod. So if you say it worked in earlier versions and it has now stopped, I'd heartily advise you to report it to Adobe via the bug report. Click the link below to open the page to file the report.
    http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
From what I'm seeing, your best bet at this point is to right-click the link and choose "Show Topic Links". Then from the Link View window, open the topic with the link and choose to preview and test the link from there.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Backing up to timecapsule from windows based pc??

Am I misunderstanding the time capsule? I thought that I could back up my macbookpro AND my dell onto this. Any help would be great!!! Thanks

you can copy those files to any computer, mac windows it doesn't matter. You can do that over your home lan, after you set up files sharing on both the dell and the mac, or you can copy them to the thumb drive, formatted fat 32, and then copy them over to the mac.
To open them you will need MS Office 2011 for mac or one of the free office suites like Open office or lebri office.
As for the pad I have no idea if there is a program made that can open word documents on ios.

  • Is it possible/legal to include content from other websites ?

How would I go about importing some content from another external website into my iweb site ?
Is it possible to use something like the web clip function from Safari 4.0 ?

Mark ~ Some sites have a _Terms of Service_ which says:
"You may not (...) frame any portion of our Services or Content, or reproduce, reprint, copy, store, publicly display, broadcast, transmit, modify, translate, port, publish, sublicense, assign, transfer, sell, loan, or otherwise distribute the Content without our prior written consent."
Whether that kind of notice has any legal basis, I don't know. And to complicate matters, the legal situation differs, e.g.
_U.S.A. — Digital Millennium Copyright Act_
    _E.U. — Copyright Directive_
...Unless you're a lawyer (I'm not), if a site doesn't openly state that you can use its content, perhaps it's better to always have prior written consent before doing so. And if you don't get a reply to your request, put some small print in your site attributing that content to the external site and mention that you've attempted to contact them without success. Also keep copies of your consent requests in case you need to later prove that you made a good faith attempt to respect others content.

  • Migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements to iPhoto '08

I recently got a Mac and I'm looking into migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements 6.0 to iPhoto 7 ('08).
I've seached this forum, but I didn't find any detailed tips, tricks and recommendations on how to do the migration. I know about the PE (Photoshop Elements) command to write keyword information into the files (something like File->write tags to file). Someone (IIRC Barbara B.) also mentioned something about scripts to make the transition smoother, although I haven't seen any detailed information on what and where these scripts are. Basically, I'd like to hear from users who have migrated from Windows Photoshop Elements. I have thousands of pictures and prior planning can save me lots of time.
    Some questions:
    1. Photoshop Elements has a tagging feature, which is similar to iPhoto's keyword feature. Not sure how iPhoto will process the keywords. Do I just import the pictures into iPhoto and iPhoto will recognize the keywords? Should I create the keywords in iPhoto ahead of time prior to import (using names that exactly match Photoshop tag names) ?
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
    4. One PE feature that I will really miss is hierarchical tags (e.g. Family->Kid's name). (Aside: everyone, please put in a request to Apple to support this feature!!) While I would prefer a native iPhoto feature to support hierarchical tags, I saw that there are 3rd party plugins available. What's the best one in terms of features and long term support/viability? Is it Keyword Manager?
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
    6. I'm afraid to ask this next question (and I'm sure this is worthy of many separate threads). I'm still grappling with the concept of Events. In my mind, an event is something "monumental", and I've used Albums in PE for these "monumenal" events. A large percentage of my pictures don't really fit into a "monumental event" categary. Instead, they are pictures that were taken in a random/candid manner. Or, I might have pictures that are truly events, but maybe only 1 or 2 pictures would fit into an event. If I started using iPhoto from the very beginning, it may be easier to deal with the concept of events. However, I already have thousands of pictures. I'm wary of importing all my pictures in one shot (rather than on a per "event" basis), since it may result in hundreds of events, which, IMO, wouldn't provide much organizational value. Anyone have any tips/philosophical opinions on how to deal with events when thousands of pictures need to be imported? Someone (T.D.?) mentioned they organize by year for older pictures. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Can't answer all your questions, but I'll have a go at a couple.
If you write the tags to the file then iPhoto will recognise them as part of the IPTC data. There is no way to create tags in advance.
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
Can Elements write these to the IPTC data? If so, iPhoto should read them. A little trial will confirm.
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
No, the IPTC data does not recognise ratings.
Keyword Manager is the way to do this.
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
What do you mean by "album definitions"?
    About Events:
Don't get hung up on a word. They could have as easily called them 'trousers' and it would make almost as much sense
An 'Event' is an import that is automatically divided into folders depending on the criteria you set in the iPhoto Preferences.
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
So, really an Event is a Folder.
For my money, Events are a very limited way of organising photos. They are strictly date and time based. As time goes by I consolidate them - Spring 06, Summer 07, America 08 (I do this as we have three cameras feeding the Library).
I organise using Albums, Smart Albums and Keywords.
Albums (Smart or otherwise) are virtual entities. Unlike Events, they reference files on the HD, so a pic can be in 1,10 or 100 Albums with no extra disk space used. (To have a pic in two events requires two copies of the files.) They are infinitely flexible and offer a much richer set of possibilities.
How have you your photos organised currently? In folders? On what basis? If you can explain how that works we may be able to help you recreate this system in iPhoto.
    Regards
    TD
