501 Syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)

Hi all,
When setting up Mail I got as far as getting the mail off the pop server (port 110). Sending is still not working (same server as for receiving but - port 25 - no authentication). Connection doctor shows the following message - *501 Syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)*.
It looks like that in polling the server it adds a _2 to my name ie NAME_2 - my research has shown that SMTP servers do not like _ text, and that this is the most likely cause.
Any logic why this may happen - and if it can be fixed?
Thanks!

Thanks for that link.
I had actually looked at it earlier, and next to the 'mail.smtp.localhost' property it reads:
Local host name. Defaults to InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName(). Should not normally need to be set if your JDK and your name service are configured properly.
Which begs the question: how should my JDK and/or my name service be configured?
I am sorry to say that I have no idea what JDK configurations to consider, and I do not think a name service is used in my simple test application.

Can someone tell me if this error message is my problem or the recipients? 99% of our email goes through fine, but we now have 3 customers we get this error from. The email was sent from Snow Leopard Server 10.6.5. I did an MX check and MXToolbox reported back my ISP's IP address and not the static IP address of our server.

  • 550 Access denied-invalid HELO name (See RFC2821 4.1.1.1.1)

    Hello All
I am facing some problem while sending mail which is as:
I have developed a form for sending mail with attachment for this i am using smtp mail server. For this i get some help from OTN. It work well on XP Operating System but when it deployee on Window professional 2003 SP2 (server) then it give message as
    Oracle.forms.demos.javamail.SendMessageException:
    SendMessage: 550 Access denied-invalid HELO name (See RFC2821 4.1.1.1.1)
    Please help me.
    Thanks in Advance.

Most likely the name service isn't properly configured on your Windows machine
and it can't get the correct host name for your machine. You can try working
around the problem by setting the mail.smtp.localhost property; see the javadocs
    for the com.sun.mail.smtp package.

  • Argument data type varchar is invalid for argument 1 of formatmessage function

So, I have a need to parameterize my templates so I can dynamically compile and execute them as needed. I have read on some blogs that it is possible to use FORMATMESSAGE  for user string formatting but I can't seem to get that working on my end and
would appreciate help getting this running.
I continually run into the following error message
    Msg 8116, Level 16, State 1, Line 9
Argument data type varchar is invalid for argument 1 of formatmessage function.
when I try to execute either of  the queries below

    Hi Databyter,
Based on my testing, the first query runs fine in a SQL Server 2012 while I got the same error in your post when trying to run it in a SQL Server 2008R2.
After going through the BOL of the FORMATMESSAGE for both versions, something came into my sight.  The note below was removed in the 2012 BOL.
FORMATMESSAGE works only with messages created using
    sp_addmessage.
    BOL:FORMATMESSAGE(2008)
    BOL:FORMATMESSAGE(2012)
The messages created using sp_addmessage can be viewed by using the sys.messages. Thus in SQL Server 2008, you have to follow the example to use the function or you get the error in your post.
    SELECT * FROM sys.messages WHERE message_id = 20009 AND language_id = 1033;
    DECLARE @var1 VARCHAR(200);
    SELECT @var1 = FORMATMESSAGE(20009, 'First Variable', 'Second Variable');
    SELECT @var1;
For some reason the limitation is removed in SQL Server 2012, that's why your first query runs fine.

  • Netboot error: Invalid kernel argument

I'm trying to install Arch using the Netboot Live System, following these steps:
Installed Syslinux on a SD card according to its wiki.
Copy the iPXE kernel image to the SD card root.
Created an syslinux.cfg file with this content:
    LABEL archnetboot
MENU LABEL Arch Linux Netboot Environment
    KERNEL /ipxe.lkrn
But when the notebook starts it says:
SYSLINUX 6.02 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2013 H. Peter Anvin et al
    Loading /ipxe.lkrn... ok
    Booting kernel failed: Invalid argument
    boot:
So it seem like I need to pass some network kernel parameters or something like that, because I tried the image with Qemu and it works fine.
The notebook is connected to the net by its Ethernet port, and I enabled the Network Boot in the BIOS although as far I know it is irrelevant when you try to boot from iPXE.
    Any ideas? Thanks beforehand.

I have the same problem. Could anyone please come by and correct this? I had a workaround for this booting the ipxe image from the "boot:" prompt that you get with syslinux but can't find it atm.

  • 550 Access denied - Invalid HELO name (See RFC2821 4.1.1.1)

i m trying to send the emails to some of the domains and i am getting the reply like this.................

    Hi md,
Please refer to see RFC2821 4.1.1.1:
These commands are used to identify the SMTP client to the SMTP server. The argument field contains the fully-qualified domain name of the
SMTP client if one is available. In situations in which the SMTP client system does not have a meaningful domain name (e.g., when its address is dynamically allocated and no reverse mapping record is available), the client SHOULD send an address literal, optionally
followed by information that will help to identify the client system.
This issue may be caused by the FQDN on your send connector, you can change it to the proper name.
You can know more information from this document:
RTC 2821 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
    http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2821#section-4.1.1.1
    Thanks,

  • Setting 'mail.smtp.localhost' to make things work

    Hello
I was getting this error with my initial attempts to send myself an email using JavaMail:
    javax.mail.MessagingException: 501 Syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)
After hunting around for a while I came across references to doing this:
    props.put( "mail.smtp.localhost", "localhost" )
So I tried it, and it works!
I'm happy about that, but I would like to find out why? I just cannot seem to find an answer anywhere.
I run Windows XP, and my hosts file has not been changed - localhost is still there, as shipped. When I call this:
    InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName()
I get the $COMPUTERNAME value for my PC which happenes to be "HARRY_PC".
My real concern is what will happen when I deploy my application to other machines - is this little 'hack' likely to break things?
    Hmm...
    Many thanks!
    Harry Mantheakis

    Thanks for that link.
I had actually looked at it earlier, and next to the 'mail.smtp.localhost' property it reads:
Local host name. Defaults to InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName(). Should not normally need to be set if your JDK and your name service are configured properly.
Which begs the question: how should my JDK and/or my name service be configured?
I am sorry to say that I have no idea what JDK configurations to consider, and I do not think a name service is used in my simple test application.

  • SMTP error sending mail

My MacBook Pro has suddenly stopped sending email on a number of my accounts using Mac Mail. I'm not aware of any changes to account for this, I just started it up at the beginning of the working day and it would not send. Receiving emails from the affected accounts is perfectly OK.
Using the connection doctor I find these error messages.
    HELO unknown-e0:f8:47:42:13:fe.home
    then
    501 Syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)
Has anyone any suggestions of a cause/resolution?
    Thanks

You are absolutely correct, In Mac Mail.
I have been using computers for over 20 years and have used a total of 5 email clients in those 20 years. Mostly Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Mac Mail and now on all computers, Mac and PC, Thunderbird. With 4 of them I never had any problem sending and receiving mail, and I never had a problem with Mac mail but I used it for a total of maybe 2 or 3 days before I switched over to Thunderbird on OS X and then got rid of Windows Live Mail on PCs and installed Tbird of those computers. I have never had to Delete an account and recreate it in any of those other programs. Once it was set up and working it continued to work for Years.
Like I said in my post above if you do a search someone someplace is always having problems with Mac Mail sending or receiving Email. Without those users making any changes to the mail program, their email account settings or their system. It just stops.

  • OSX 10.6 Mail SMTP fail (fine on Entourage, iPad and iPhone)

    Weird one here.
My SMTP server is failing to verify from Mail 4.6 (1085) running under OSx 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 1,1  2.16ghz 2gb ram.
Installed on the same computer is Entourage (12.0.0) which works fine, as does my iPhone and iPad. All connected to the same router via wifi.
Obviously I've gone over the settings with a toothcomb, and they are identical. Just for reference here they are:
    server: smtp.123-reg.co.uk
    authentication: password
    user name: <email address>
    pw: secret!
port: 465 (have tried 25 and 587 as well)
ssl: on (tried off with all above ports)
Anybody got any bright ideas as to why Mail doesn't want to play ball? Anything else I should be checking?
    Thanks,
    Dom

I hadn't tried connection doctor, but it's led me to some more info about my problem, sent me to some more websites and forums and ultimately a solution...
Connection doctor was not giving me much info (1 line saying it was trying to connect), so I plumbed all the email settings into Mail 6.5 (1508) running under 10.8.4 on another Mac, I get the same issue (and the same positive result with Outlook 14.3.5), but at least connection doctor there gave me a lot more info.
The clue was this from connection doctor:
    WROTE Aug 24 11:54:51.854 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone]  -- host:smtp.123-reg.co.uk -- port:25 -- socket:0x7fe58fb2af10 -- thread:0x7fe58b127840

    501 Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)
A lot of reading of forums (http://business.forums.bt.com/t5/Email/email-on-Mac-problem-sending/td-p/46630/p age/2) led me to realise this was my BT Home Hub 3, Mail and the 123-reg smtp server having an incompatibility.
I changed the name of my computer in sharing prefs to a simple name with no spaces and punctuation, made sure the new name was updated in the hub, restarted both and bingo we're working.
The hub was suffixing to wifi mac id of the Mac with .home and this was failing the EHLO/HELO authentication.
    Anyway, problem solved. Thank god!!

  • Does OSX 10.9 Mail download all mail from yahoo servers and store locally?

I recently found 11GB worth of email messages on my hard drive that had been downloaded from the Yahoo server. I can't find a setting in mail preferences to keep all of my stored e-mails on the Yahoo server from downloading and being stored locally on my internal hard drive. Suggestions?

  • Outgoing SMTP Authentication Method Problem (functional option, require signin, not available)

    Hello all,
I'm trying to set up an account on my Thunderbird and I'm having a weird problem. I can receive emails on it fine but I cannot send any emails. Whenever I try to send any emails I get the error message "Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)".
This email address that I'm trying to add as an account on Thunderbird works perfectly fine in my Gmail Android app on my phone. The difference in the Outgoing SMTP settings are that on my (working) gmail app the Security Type = NONE and the "Require signin" box is CHECKED, whereas in Thunderbird I can set my Outgoing SMTP Security Type setting to = NONE but I do not have the option to "Require signin". All of the options that are available do not work.
    Is there any solution?
    Thank you!
    Best, Nick

    thank u
PS: It could also be possible that the application server does not have the complete recipient information or not have nothing at all?????  i will look into dat aswell.

    Hi WidPacket,
    Thank you for your question.
If message flow is well for other users, we could make sure we have configured receive connector for application server, then we could make sure email address of application server was configured with correct format. If the application server has cache,
we could delete cache to check if the issue persist.
If the issue persist, we could contact third application server.
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
    Best Regard,
    Jim

When trying to run the report via Crystal Reports Server, we get the following error:
Error in File ~tmp81c59e23760a10.rpt: Invalid argument for database.
Opening the report in Crystal Reports 2008 and running a verify database, confirms that everything is working. Yet when we run it through Crystal Reports Server it errors every time.
We are using a Progress ODBC driver which works fine when running reports via Crystal Reports 2008
Can you please shed some light on this.
I have already checked to see if there was a service pack or any other hot fixes available.

    Hi Brett,
I believe I have the same error. ie
    Invalid Argument provided.
    Error in File xxxxx {C8F4D455-6B45-4859-B1B0-3E77619E5AD0}.rpt:
    Invalid argument for database."
Have you managed to resolve the issue yet?
We're running Crystal Reports 2008 Basic on MS SQL Server 2005.
The Crystal Report works fine, when run on the server (and/or in terminal server session), but if it is run from a desktop client, which connects to the server, it gives the error above.
So in my case, it must permissions or component related (ie something not loaded, that should be).
I found the following on the internet:
u201DIDataReader supports only one table by default
When you view a report that has tables with the data source set to
IDataReader for each one, and many of the tables are linked together, you
may see the following error message: "Invalid database argument." Calls
made to SetDataSource() from an IDataReader are supported only for
    reports that contain one table.
    Workaround
To use an IDataReader with multiple tables, create a report with one
command table that selects the necessary fields.u201C
From researching in SAP BOBJ Notes I found somethings to try, or look at, but can't quite tackle them yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Windows Mail server error 501

Every time I foreword an address or web page etc. using the "File" E-Mail Link the following happens. The e-mail is sent but there are five old error messages shown below. The e-mail goes trough but I have to hit the [close] box to clear the sent message. I can't figure out how to remove the old rejected e-mail addresses.
Here is a copy of the message.
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.
The rejected e-mail address was '*****@picturetrail.comAccount:2051017:return'. Subject 'Account:2051017:return', Account: 'Dave's Mail', Server: 'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '501 Syntax error in arguments', Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 501, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

This has nothing to do with Firefox. Mail is being rejected as you have set up your mail in a wrong way with incorrect ports etc.. Please contact the appropriate people for this issue and not here.
