5G 30G fix (for now at least) Windows XP + Norton

This resolved my ipod problems I hope it helps a few of you. I'm using a Acer laptop with Windows XP SP2.
I had similar problems to those on a lot of existing threads. Ipod appeared dead !+folder and I was about to give up.
One message lead me to my solution. Remove all itunes and ipod software. Disable Norton anti virus. Reload software from CD. Ipod came to life when connecting to PC - prompted me to reload ipod software. Ipod then recongnised in iTunes. First attempt to transfer songs failed. Went back to Norton and disabled the firewall (even though it was already showing as inactive). Songs have now transferred to iPod and appears to be working fine (for now at least).
Message to Apple - if you read these.
A problem caused by Windows with Norton, the most common combination and you didn't test it! Someone needs their ares kicked (one extra from me). Five hours finding this solution!

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />

  • FIXED (for me at least): iPhone 3gs will not sync with Gateway NV79

I’ve spent months trying to fix this miserable problem with getting my iPhone 3gs to sync with my new Gateway NV79. Gateway will not help. Their technical support is genuinely worthless. Microsoft blames Apple and Apple blames Gateway.
My old iPod Nano syncs to my Gateway NV79 without a problem. I’ve tried all of the proposed fixes but other posters with no success.
But I do believe I’ve discovered a real fix (for me at least). Here’s my setup:
    • Gateway NV79 running Windows 7 64 bit edition
    • iTunes 10
    • iPhone 3gs running OS 4.02
The USB ports needs tweaking to get the iPhone 3gs to sync to the Gateway NV79. Follow these steps without your iPhone 3gs connected to the Gateway NV79:
Step 1: Go to Control Panel
    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Click Hardware & Sound
    3. Click Power Options
    4. Make sure Balanced is selected and click Change Plan Settings
    5. Click Change advanced power settings
    6. Expand USB Settings
    7. Expand USB selective suspend setting
    8. Change On Battery setting to Disabled.
    9. Change Plugged in setting to Disabled
    10. Click OK
Step 2: Go to Windows Explorer
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Right-Click Computer (not your computer name)
    3. Click Properties
    4. Click Device Manager
    5. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
    6. Right-click first Generic USB Hub
    7. Click Properties
    8. Click Power Management
    9. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    10. Click OK
    11. Right-click second Generic USB Hub
    12. Click Properties
    13. Click Power Management
    14. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    15. Click OK
    16. Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, login and connect your iPhone.
You must complete both steps. Step 1 is required for Step 2 to stick.
There are a few things that may happen. iTunes may start syncing immediately and fail with an error. Don’t worry. If the sync fails the first time, restart the computer with the iPhone still connected. Now, iTunes will either take you to setup screen to connect your iPhone or the sync may restart. In my case, the setup screen came up and I DID NOT CHOOSE TO RESTORE. Pick the first option to add your iPhone. The sync will restart and may or may not finish. Don’t worry, if the sync fails, restart your computer again with the iPhone still connected and this time the sync will work.
Here’s the problem: the iPhone 3gs will not sync with the power management enabled for the USB ports on the Gateway NV79.
    Good luck.

If you cannot update your computer, you will not be able to sync your phone. The requirements are:
    Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.1 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access

  • Fix For Slow Safari On Windows

A number of people reported that Safari was running very slow for them on Windows. I was someone who was also seeing the same behavior. Web pages that would open up in 2 seconds under IE7 could take literally minutes to fully draw in Safari.
Someone mentioned a proxy issue in one of the other threads, and I got to thinking about that...I made a tiny change, and the problem is gone! Safari is now full steam ahead for me, compared to the snail is was before.
Here is how I fixed the issue.
1 - Click Start and open the Control Panel.
2 - Open the "Internet Options" Control Panel.
3 - Click the "Connections" tab at the top.
4 - Click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom.
5 - Uncheck the "Automatically Detect Settings" Box.
6 - Click OK to exit the "LAN Settings" window.
7 - Click OK to exit the "Internet Options" window.
Your mileage may vary, but this really did work for me. Nothing else I had tried (clearing the cache, re-installing, etc.) made a difference...but this did. Not sure why it's not affecting everyone, but this doesn't seem to have any negative side effects. IE7 is still working fine for me with the "Automatically Detect" box unchecked.
    Enjoy!

  • Random Shutdown Problem Fixed (for now)

I experienced the same random shutdown problems/symptoms with my MacBook that have been extensively described in this forum and elsewhere. I sent it back for repair under AppleCare and it was returned in 3 days. It has been running now for 4 days with no problems and far cooler and quieter (the fan rarely comes on) than it was before. The repair sheet indicates that the heat sink and heat assembly unit were replaced.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, but at least in my case and perhaps others, the problem may simply have to do with the thermal contact with the heat sink going bad and the processor simply shuts down due to overheating.
    MacBook 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Followup:
They told me something interesting at my Mac Retailer. They have had two other machines brought in doing the same thing. They tried new logic boards with no success, they tried new thermal assemblies with no luck, new ram - nothing seemed to solve the problem.
What they finnally did was replace the Hard Drive - they tell me this has fixed the problem. Now I don't know if that is what they'll do to mine. The other two machines had the 60gb drives - mine is a 100gb, but we'll see. From all I have heard, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Anyway, we'll see what happens.
Anyone else hear anything about replacing the hard drive?

  • Grey screen hang after 10.5.1 fixed, for now.

It looks like somehow 10.5.1 has broken the ability to boot my USB HD. Upon reboot, it would hang on the grey screen with spinner going. Verbose mode shows a bunch of reports of kernel dependency conflicts and journal errors. Here are some:
kernel[0]: jnl: unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
kernel[0]: Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style.
So, just for kicks, I removed the hard disk and installed it in one of my firewire 800 cases. Plug in, power on, booted right up no problem. Also no more kernel or journal errors either.
I tried restarting about 10 times in a row and it's working fine and is not spitting out the previous errors any more.
    Hopefully this will stay working.

I have duplicated this issue. I was running 10.5 on a 500GB USB drive. I upgraded to 10.5.1 with no abnormal errors. On restart I get a grey screen with Apple and a spin underneath. No further boot. Let it go over night. I watched the verbose startup and it hangs just as mentioned above.
When I boot from my internal drive the USB drive mounts and is intact. I have run Disk Utility repairs and no problems have been found. I will try DiskWarrior also.
Unfortunately the drive is SATA and my firewire case is ATA/IDE. So I cannot test the drive as above. I will look into getting a FW case and post those results when I get them.
Any ideas as to a resolution would be appreciated.

  • My fix for Safari 5 crashing

I was getting tons of crashes, mostly navigating around Amazon. After trying all sorts of stuff, the only thing I can find that seems to work 100% was removing ClicktoFlash. Too bad. I hope it's updated soon.

After the upgrade there were slow page loads on my mac 10.5.8.
    No crashes yet.
At home using ATT DSL with their 2701HG-B Gateway router/dhcp server.
Notices most when trying to go to sites such as Ebay and it took a long time for entire page to load.
The fix for now was to hand change the DNS setting from the automatic one to SBC's DSL (or one close to your home). I used 206.13.28.12.
Page loads are much more "zippy" and fully load quickly.
    Now wife is happy.

I have just updated to Lion and now my folders no longer show number of items on the bottom. Is there a fix for this? I allways found that handy. Now I have to click on an icon on the top, This is a backward step if that is now the only way to see the number of items. Am I missing something obvious?

    Parrotcat wrote:

In the good old days of Snow Leopard, an open Finder folder had a border along the bottom of the window which could show the number of items in that window and the total available space on the hard disk or partition that folder resides on. That bottom border is gone in Lion and those two bits of information are gone with it. Is that what you're talking about? If so, I'd like to learn how to get it back too and "Show Item Info" is not the way.

Hi. Whenever I go through one of the menus in firefox, the links remain highlighted after my mouse passes over them. Is there a bug fix for this or is there something wrong with my computer? I am running windows 7 if that helps. This problem started ever since I upgraded to version 5.

I have downloaded and used the iPod Reset Utility, alot that did. My current state is iTunes on my XP Home with SP3 sees the iPod. When I drag a song to the iPod, the Sync message appears for about 5 minutes, then the Apple symbol appears. But no song has been transferred to the iPod.
I tried to tap into the XP iTunes database from my iBook, but although it acted like it would add the XP library to the iBook library, it did not. I've got 19 Gs of songs on the XP. If I have to load each song from its original CD to get it on my iBook I'm going to start looking for some other app or device so that I can listen to my music.
It is a shame, in the old days, Apple techs use to look at what was going on, now it appears they don't, so they never know they have problems until Apple's profits fall.

    Log Message:
Fix for a bug: After playing a hide effect, a window wouldn't be visible again.
The issue here is that all effects that occur because of HIDE end up calling setVisible() (see EffectManager.effectEndHandler).  Window/WindowedApplication was basically left with two concepts of setVisible...the displayObject one and the native application one, and they were out of synch.  So setting visible=true on the window wasn?\226?\128?\153t calling setVisible(true) which controls the display object visibility.  Now instead of doing our work in the visible setter, we override setVisible() and do it in there.

I run Suse 9.1 Linux, and Suse has a package called lmsensors which by default on my machine gives readings like this:
    Code: [Select]
    temp1:       +27°C  (high =    +0°C, hyst =   +22°C)   sensor = thermistor
    temp2:     +41.0°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = PII/Celeron diode
Now that 41C is pretty high for an idle AMD643000+ running at 1000Mhz, 1.08V. Too high, I would say. temp 1 in this case is the SYS temp, temp2 is the CPU temp.
Now, using lmsensors I can duplicate your little trick and tell it that temp 2 is in fact a 3904 transistor. Having done this can I get readings like this:
    Code: [Select]
    temp1:       +27°C  (high =    +0°C, hyst =   +22°C)   sensor = thermistor
    temp2:     +16.0°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = 3904 transistor
Problem is, I'm not sure that the sensor is actually a 3904 transistor! The number's lower, but I was pretty sure that the sensor in the AMD64 is in fact a diode. Also, surely the CPU temp can't actually be that much lower than the SYS temp.
So, I think your fix succeeds in giving lower temps and that's great in that it will tell your system software that the CPU is not overheating, but I don't think it's the solution to high temp reporting. Anyway, as you say, its a solution for people who can't run with system shutdowns due to bogus high temps.
I've been looking at these temp issues with the MSI K8T, and I was thinking the problem was simply a miscalibration. The Winbond sensor chip on my board (maybe the K8N is the same, maybe not) has a sensor temp offset that gets added to the temp coming from the sensor. On the K8T this number is +54C.   Funny number I know, but I've "fixed" the problem while I wait for a real bios fix on the K8T by simply reducing this offset to give me a CPU temp that matches SYS temp when idle. This enables cool'n'quiet fan control to work properly on my system, which is my main practical concern.

  • MBR fix for Windows 7 thinkpads?

I really need to resolve this issue. My MBR is "broken" (restored to a non-lenovo stock Windows 7 MBR)  and now all my lenovo software and a lot of my hardware's software won't work. e.g. Intel graphics control panel, lenovo system update, lenovo power manager, etc... While loading any of these, I get "<application name> has stopped working....".
    Background:
I previously removed a dual boot of Fedora I installed. However, the grub boot loader remained and I wanted to get rid of it. Normally Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery can be used to restore the boot loader (and remove grub), but I couldn't load R&R nor install a newer version. From what I could understand from reading online, R&R required the lenovo boot loader installed to work properly so I couldn't use it to restore my boot loader - a classic Catch 22.
I decided to borrow a windows 7 CD to use the repair feature. It worked by restoring windows 7's boot loader. However, ever since I did this, a lot of the preinstalled applications I listed above do not work anymore. None of the lenovo software work for sure. I have tried to reinstall some with no luck.
My best guess is that I can't use Window's MBR, but instead need to restore Lenovo's MBR / bootloader. However, after a search online I found Lenovo only provides the MBR fix for windows XP and 2000, not 7.
    Any suggestions?

Fixing the MBR shouldn't alter the functionality of programs, unless you've changed the drive letter somehow.
Reinstalling R&R within Windows should get it to work again, though.

  • Low-latency audio on Windows Phone 8 (hint: forget it for now...)

My business specializes in audio and music apps for the Windows ecosystem. For this new project that I’m considering (a virtual instrument of sorts), I need to achieve the lowest possible audio latency from capture to render.
A measured latency below 3 ms would be ideal, 20 ms would be ok, and anything above 30 ms would be a deal breaker. And just to be precise about my definition of latency, I’m strictly talking about “mic-to-speaker” latency (includes the processing in-between).
I’m not talking about “glass-to-speaker” latency, although this topic is also of interest to me.
I figured that I should be using WASAPI, as this is apparently the API that sits at the bottommost of the audio stack in WinRT / WinPRT. So I spent a couple of days re-familiarizing with C++ (happy to meet an old friend)
and I coded a prototype capturing, processing and rendering audio using WASAPI having in mind the goal of achieving the lowest possible latency. After trying and comparing various methods, workflows, threading mechanisms, buffer values and mix formats, the
best I could achieve using WASAPI on Windows Phone was ~140 ms of latency. This is using 3 ms buffers. And although the audio is glitch-free, I could have been using 30 ms buffers and it wouldn’t have made the slightest difference! The latency would still
be around 140 ms. As I found out, the API/driver is extremely defensive in protecting against audio starvation, so it adds quite a bit of buffering at both ends. This is very unfortunate, because it basically disqualifies real-time audio/musical
    applications.
I’d love to be able to provide quality audio/musical apps for the platform (both Windows Phone and Windows 8), but right now, this latency issue is kind of a deal breaker.
I've been pointing out the importance of low latency audio to Microsoft for quite a while, and I know I'm not the only one, and I know a lot of people at Microsoft realize this is important. But in its execution,
it seems Microsoft constantly fails to deliver a truly low-latency audio stack. In the pre-XP days, I've had talks with the sysaudio devs about this, and I was told, "yeah, we're working on a new architecture that will come out after XP and
it will solve the latency problem for all audio and musical applications." Fast forward to mid-2010 (pre-Windows Phone 7), and I was still there pointing out the horrible latency figures one would get from the APIs that were about to ship. And
now that WASAPI is available on WP8 (our best hope yet for low-latency audio), I discover the overly defensive and buffer-happy architecture of WASAPI (even though one of its promises was precisely low-latency audio).
    So, the question is…
Is Microsoft aware of this issue? If so, is Microsoft giving up and simply conceding the pro-audio territory to iOS? If not, I’d be glad to discuss this issue with an engineer at Microsoft. I’m serious about bringing audio apps
to the platform. I just need some assurance that Microsoft is taking action on its end, so that I can sync my development with the next product cycle.
Thanks in advance for any help, advice, or insights!
    /Antoine

Any update on this issue? Is there a roadmap for a fix?
I ported a realtime sound analyzing application (requiring both audio input and output) to WinRT and was quite surprised at the high latency from WASAPI. I then searched around and posted some questions regarding this on various MS forums and got to the
following conclusions based on feedback from people including MVPs and MS employees:
A lot of those people are under the impression that WASAPI qualifies as a low-latency API.
Apparently WinRT apps are not supposed to have high CPU usage, and this is purposefully baked into the framework (minimal thread priority control, async/await everywhere which results in thread priority inversion, and other issues).
Why would anyone ever need high-priority threads? They must use a lot of CPU, right?
A lot of people think low-latency audio means high CPU usage. You can see where this is going when you look at the previous point.
Async/Await is being forced down to all levels, even though it should only be used at the UI level. What some people are actually now calling "old-school" multithreading is now being pushed out (lock, etc). Async/Await has horrible overhead and
results in thread priority inversion amongst other issues. For example, witness that there is no StorageFile.Read, just StorageFile.ReadAsync. Do some IO benchmarks with some of these async methods and you will see some horrible performance compared to desktop
    file IO.
To get an understanding of what low latency audio means and why it is important, see this video. It compares the latency of Android to iOS using the exact same music app. Ever wondered
why there are no quality music apps for Android? Well now you know. And then realize that WinRT has
twice as much latency as Android.
And if anyone thinks this is a niche use case, consider that Apple created adds showcasing "musicians" playing their iPad "instruments". A use case that is essentially unavailable for WinRT apps. Why would Apple create
adds for a niche use case?
This should have been one of the high priority issues solved from the start in WinRT. MS solved this issue in Windows (desktop) long ago, with the ability to get insanely low latency there (0.3 ms in some stress tests,
see here), even beating out OSX. It is as if there is a new generation of architects at MS that know nothing about this previous work and are doomed to make the same mistakes over again. I really don't
understand why these pre-existing APIs can't be exposed in WinRT. No need to re-invent the wheel. But I guess it just isn't important enough.
I find this situation really sad since otherwise it could be a great and powerful platform.

  • Think I found the fix for no downloading windows updates for HP Printers problem.

I thought I'd post a new topic here. I've figured out whats gone wrong with the windows 10 updates. Someone wrote about it in his thread (I forget the thread url though), and it worked. I've done this on 2 PC's.. W7 to W10, and W8.1 to W10. What you have to do is; 1. Go to device manager. Look down the list for Printers. Open up that arrow and see if you're printer is listed there? If it's listed as Unknown Device then; 2. Go to the HP website and find the driver for your printer on there. Download it through the website / program as though you was installing your printer for the first time i.e. it should check the connection of you're printer during this process. 3. Now you have your printer driver re-installed. Go back to Device manager and check that it now appears listed by the correct name in the Printer section. 3a. If there are other unknown devices besides your printer listed, you need to delete the other unknown devices, leaving only your printer listed. 4. Go back to windows update and retry a windows update (it asks you to install the old failed ones first, so try it, expecting failure, then press the retry button. 5. If all went well, it shouldn't list anymore updates, and you're done!

I also installed 10.5.1 combo update and that took out all but the remote desktop warning.
If you have others, then be careful how you fix them.
Most of us have gotten rid of all of them using the combo updates.
