5k imac windows opening slowly

I have a brand new 5k imac 10.10.1 (14B25) with 24 gb ram
and my windows open very slowly, finder folder windows, email mac app windows, browser windows etc.
So as you know the OS opens windows in a multi step sequence or animated, starts out with a small version, then there is a medium size version then full size, I know they are supposed look like the window is growing and opening through this animated steps and they normally would look like that if they did that in a rapid order, but my system opens them slowly enough that you can see each step which like an animation you arent supposed to see. like what you would see in a really bogged down overloaded situation.
My system came with 8gb ram, so I upgraded to 24gb, but no help. I reset pram, deleted the com.apple.finder.plist as a website suggested that, no help.
If I try to drag windows around the desktop, it seems to be sticky and glitchy too. Its like the video card is bogged down or something versus the cpu.

Greetings smartcloud,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iMac running Yosemite is not running as quickly as expected. You have done some fantastic troubleshooting and isolation steps already as well. In this situation, I would also suggest reading over the attached article for other troubleshooting tips.

  • Export settings window opens slowly

I have just built a new computer with the following spec's:
Asus P6x58D-E; i7 950; 12 GB ram; GTX-470; Win7 64-bit; Production Premium CS5. The Windows OS and Adobe software is fully updated; no anti-virus (or really any other software unrelated to the Adobe software installation) is currently installed.
With an older computer (Core2 Duo; 4 GB ram) running CS5, the export settings window opens in maybe 5 seconds or less. The new computer takes over 30 seconds for the window to open.
I am thinking I might have an incompatable version of Quicktime player installed (I installed the current version from the Apple website), because other than that, it's a clean install. What else could be wrong?

    Eric,
I have this problem with a system with an RTX2 card.  All was well until I came back from 2 months away at the end of January - the export settings window opened with no delay.  I ran Adobe update for everything except Premiere (Matrox advise against 03 for their carsds), and installed Photoshop CS5 to replace CS2.
A few days later, when I tried editing I found that the export settings took an age to open.
I tried the changes to SurCodeWrapper today.  Changing AME made no difference, but changing the Premiere file solved my problem.
I am happy for the moment, as I have no use for SwCode Dolby, but I hope Matrox come up with a solution when they finally gaet around to releasing drivers for the (not-so)new Premiere update.

  • Why is my iMac much slower after installing Mavericks. Windows open slowly and Apps load slowly.

Everything seems to be taking much longer. I have a late-2012 iMac with 32 GB of RAM that was blazing fast until I "upgraded" to Mavericks. Now everyithing is slow. Does it use more system resources? I would think that with that much RAM I would have plenty of headroom for the OS. Is anyone else experiencing this?

    Here's my suggestion:
    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    1. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
    2. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Re-download and reinstall Mavericks.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do I have a new window open, but slowly open to full size after clicking on a link from main pag

The transitions I mean are on this site. The fading in window, and click on the image, which opens a new window but slowly to full size.  http://ra1830.wix.com/qgd2012

  • Everytime I start my iMac it opens several windows. I don´t know what to do to prevent this.

Everytime I start my iMac it opens several windows: Word, Excel, etc. I don´t know how to prevent this. I have to spend several minutes everytime closing 5 or 6 windows. I close everything before I sign out so I don´t know what to do. Please help.

In addition, OS X Lion includes a function referred to as Resume, where it will automatically re-open any app left running when the machine was shut down or restarted.
To prevent that from happening, you can uncheck the item in the shutdown or restart splash screen which refers to re-opening running apps. Unfortunately, this has to be done every time.
The alternative is to get in the habit of quitting all apps before shutting down or restarting.
Note that in the user's guide Apple suggests not shutting the machine down unless it will be unused for more than a few days. Not sure how many 'few' is in that context, but since I use mine every day I never shut it down (unless there's an electrcal storm in the area).

  • Screen sharing between server and iMac appears to connect but no window opens

We have been trying to screen share between a server and iMac. Both are running Snow Leopard 10.6.7. It seems like we connect using the share screen app because we don't get any error messages after inputing the username and password but no window opens for the server we are connected to. When I look under the windows tab I can see a checkmark next to our server name and trying 'bring all to front' doesn't do anything. The video card on the server died and was removed by our tech support who said we could still access the computer via screen sharing. Would the server not having a video card be the cause of our problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
A Bit for other reading this thread.
To change the Login port for any AIM based name you have to obviously Log out first and then Change the port (SSL might need to be selected first) and then Press Enter to "Set" the port.
This use of the Enter key is the bit that is different to earlier versions of iChat.
    For Gary,
Which Thomson-Alcatel device do you have ?
Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouches used to work well when the firmware that ran them was at Version 4.2.5 or less.
At least at this level you could access the device via Terminal using Telnet and then access the Command Line Interface (CLI) and "Unbind" SIP from port 5060
Later versions of their Firmware did not allow for a full Unbind of SIP and Video and Audio chats could only be partially successful (about 15 buddies out a list of 50
Of course using UPnP to open ports for iChat 4 helps with the Screen Sharing as the process is an Screen Share with an Audio Chat along side and both have to work/connect.
I am surprised to hear that in iChat 5 that Screen Sharing is not working when Video and Audio chats are.
For this reason I would ask how the ports have been opened in the Thomson device ?
After that I would keen to know if the Thomson Device or the Time Capsule is doing DHCP to the LAN ?
(Share an IP on the Time capsule is to Enable DHCP)
I am not sure how AT&T expect anyone to use their site to gain help or see what they currently offer when you have to type in a phone number or area (ZIP code).
I did enter the example number and got to this set of pages http://www.att.com/esupport/main.jsp?cv=801#
I see no reference to any Thomson-Alcatel device.

My iMac all of the sudden started going in and out of the dashboard, then started changing all files on the desktop to 2's. It also did this when having another window open. Do I have a virus?

There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X.
What files do you keep on the Desktop? How many?
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
Here is Apple's take on the subject:

  • If I have several tabs/windows open and I go to a new page, it hijack several of my current windows with that same URL. How to stop?

I frequently have a couple of windows with several tabs in each window open. For example, I always have a small window open in the corner of my screen with a time tracking program set up. Sometimes when I open a new tab or window and go to a URL (not thru a search engine, but just directly), it will "hijack" one or more of my other tabs/windows and plug in that same URL, losing whatever I had previously open. I've checked through all the prefs and I don't see why or how this problem is happening. What gives? I'm on an iMac using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 using Firefox 34.0.5. HELP!

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Only one window opens at a time

I bought the new 27" imac, partly because of the extra work space it gave me on the screen.  So you can imagine my frustration to find that I can only open one app window at a time. In other words, let's say I have safari open.  I click on the evernote icon in the dock. The evernote app opens quickly, but safari disappears in the dock, leaving only the evernote window open on the screen.    My goal is to have both the safari and evernote apps (for example) open at the same time, side by side on the screen.
I played with mission control and general in system preferences, but nothing seemed to work.  One potential culprit is C-Dock, which allows you to customize the dock. (It's not very good.)  I want to uninstall it, but can't find the app in finder or anywhere else.  The only cdock file I find is a small read.me file. I have gone to the original site where I downloaded and registered, but I never got a confirmation.
Any suggestions, both for ensuring multiple windows can be open on my big screen at the same time, and for getting rid of my cDock headache??
    Thanks,
    Nick

When i connect my iphone to my imac, itunes opens but my itunes is not there.  My wife has recently added herself to the computer
and her itunes appears but i cannot find my itunes?

Not really! Anyhow, what do you want to achieve. The only things you can access in your iPad outside of using iTunes are photos and videos. [Locate the iPad as any other external device through Windows Eplorer or Finder and dig through the folders.]
You are fortunate that iTunes opens when you connect the iPad since many other users have difficulty in achieving this. It is from there that you can manage what you want synced to the iPad.

  • Window.opener question

    Hello,
I understand that the windeo.opener reference the parent window. My question is, if I have a parent page and this page calls page2 and page2 calls page3, how can I reference the parent page from page3?
I am using window.opener."the applet name" but I get an error:
    Something like:
The callee server is unavailable and has disappeared.
Can anyone help me solve this problem??? Please let me know if I can provide more information..

When working with javascript in multiple windows like this, it is very easy to get lost.
I think what you missed in accessing your applet was a "document" object.
There are a couple of hints for writing javascript:
1 - you can type javascript into the address bar like so:
    javascript:alert(window.opener)
You then follow the path to the object you want as long as you can. Build it up slowly, so you see where the chain breaks.
    javascript:alert(window.opener.opener)
    javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document)
    javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document.applets)
    javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document.applets.length)
2 - General design: Don't reference stuff on other pages - call functions on the page only.
Rather than calling window.opener.opener.document.applets[0]. (ie referring to the applet from window 3)
    do this
window.opener.opener.saveApplet() (from window 3 call the saveApplet function on window1)
and on the first page have
    <script>
    function saveApplet(){
    document.applets[0]. ...
    </script>
This provides a sort of interface for other pages to use, so they don't have to refer to details on the page.
If you change the layout of the page, or the name of the applet etc etc, you only have this one place to modify it. It can save you a nightmare in javascript errors later on.
    Good luck,

  • I Need to have many internet windows open at once

I'm used to PC based work where I can have several internet windows open at once. I can't seem to do this on the iMac. I have downloaded Firefox, so I can use Firefox and Safari at the same time, but I would like to have at least 6 internet windows open at once so I may toggle between screens. How can I do this.
I know I can have multiple tabs open in firefox, but this is no help, as selecting a tab and moving back and forth between tabs is pretty cumbersome.
Thanks in advance for your help!

when i restart comp 2 windows open automatically, how do i get rid of this?

Check your System Preferences to see what items you might have set to Startup when the computer is started.
System Preferences > Users and Groups > Select your User Name > Click on Login Items > Select any item you do not want to startup automatically > click on the Minus sign in the bottom left corner.
If the items that seem to open automatically are windows that you had open before shutting down the iMac or before selecting Restart those windows will open again when the computer starts.

  • Office Files Opening Slowly Over The Network

We have a Windows Server 2012 Standard hosting files.  When opening only Microsoft Office documents, the files will open really slowly.  We are using a blend of Office 2k7 and 2k13.  Each document when opened shows it being downloaded and
in 30 seconds it will open.  This is happening on computers connected to a GB switch and a standard 10/100 switch.  PDF files that are much larger or image files open immediately.  Browsing is responsive.  Only opening documents either
with office open or by browsing to the file, the document opens slowly.

Glad to see you have your problem resolved. And thanks for sharing the workaround here, this should be helpful to other users who encounter the same problem.

  • When printing in InDesign CS2 it opens a window 'open document' and crashes

This is happening on 2 separate machines, and only intermittently, when I try to print a large InDesign file, instead of opening the print dialogue box a window opens that say 'open document' and then ties up the program so I have to force quit. Usually I have to restart my computer to get InDesign to re-open. This is happening on a new iMac and an old G5 but only sometimes.
Any insight anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
