64-bit or 32-bit Intel?

I am assuming these new Intel machines are still the old 32-bit style. Is this correct? What are we sacrificing for back stepping? I work in a PC environment office with my G5 and it's amazing how much clearer and brigher my monitor (we all have the same one) looks next to the others.

Jim,
As as software engineer who has worked in various application and systems areas and over the era of transition from 16-bit to 32-bit hardware, I can only agree with you that choice of hardware must be dictated by the needs of the use to which it will be put. So clearly for today's desktops (and even more so for laptops), 32-bit hardware is certainly adequate. Whether or not disk speeds are a factor also depends on the application. Obviously, database-intensive applications typically run the mass storage devices ragged. Other applications barely touch the disk once the program and its data are loaded.
Anyway, what I really wanted to point out, though you're probably aware of this already, is that the new iMac (Intel dual-core model) and the MacBook Pro both use faster memory and memory buses than any of their predecessors (with the possible exception of the heavy-duty G4 or G5 desktops--I'm not really familiar with their hardware details).
To give you an idea of a result I found surprising (pleasantly so), a theorem prover I've written in Java (a very CPU- and memory-intensive application) runs much faster (about 50% faster) on the iMac with its dual-core 2 GHz processor(s) than it does on the Linux box with an Intel P4 HyperThreading CPU running at 3 GHz. The reason? The RAM and FSB bus on that Linux box are a lot slower than the ones on the iMac. So even though this application, which currently is principally single-threaded (Java apps can always use a processor core for garbage collection), benefits more from the faster FSB and RAM on the iMac than it is hurt by having a processor running only two thirds the speed of the on in the Linux box.

  • ITunes 64-bit runs 32-bit, Secure link to iTunes Store failed, and SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 crashes every time I click 'Info' tab in an iDevice.

    Hello everyone,
There are 3 issues I have, as it reads in the title.
    1) I am running iTunes on a Win7 64-bit ThinkPad, and iTunes shows up as a 32-bit application in the Task Manager, always. I tried even the complete uninstalling (after removing Bonjour, Apple Mobile Service, deleting the folders, etc.) and yet, it shows up the same way.
    2) When I run diagnostics, it says 'Secure link to iTunes Store failed'. I've tried many things from whatever I've read in the forums and nothing seems to be changing that.
    3) Every time I click the 'Info' tab on any iDevice (I tried it with a 3GS and a iPod Touch), I get a 'SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 has stopped working' message thrice. I don't know the significance of thrice but it just does come.
    I hope someone helps.
    Thanks!

That one's normal. On 64-bit systems, iTunes is a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit componentry. The itunes.exe is 32-bit.
    Oh, okay. Thanks!
Could you walk us through what happens when you try to connect to the Store, please?
The issue is when I run diagnostics. I happened to run it last night while updating my 3GS to iOS 6, and there was a 3194, and a search to solve that, led me to running the diagnostic.
I was wondering how it affects me because I haven't faced any issue in downloading or browsing the AppStore. The transcript of the 'Run diagnostics', for networks is as below:

  • Can I switch from Win7 32-bit to 64-bit by clean installing from hidden recovery partition?

    Hi all,
    I'm posting from Australia.
Two weeks ago I purchased a new Toshiba laptop (http://tinyurl.com/ye6jkuq) with the following specifications:
    Model: Satellite L550
    Part number: PSLW8A-01101F
    BIOS:  V1.60
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU  P7450  @ 2.13GHz
    RAM: 4GB
    HDD: 500GB
    OS: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (pre-installed)
    My question is this:
If I use the HDD Recovery Utility (the hidden recovery partition) to do a clean re-install of Win7 Pro, will I be given the choice during the re-installation process of installing either the 32-bit or 64-bit version? Or will I not get the choice and simply be restricted to the 32-bit version that came pre-installed?
Any assistance or advice would be appreciated.
    Nick

    Satellite L550/011
I can't say for certain, Nick, but it would be a real surprise if Toshiba packaged the restore procedure so that you have a choice of versions.
If it matters, you should inquire at local Sales Support.

Now customer is installing other oracle monitoring application which is looking/requesting for 32 bit version of pam-0.99.6.2.6.el5_4.1 (i386), i.e this library
    Question:
So, is there any way we can install the 32 bit version of this ?  While 64 bit is still there ?
Concern with installing the 32 bit library, is that something picks it up mistakenly when it expects the 64 bit version.

You can run 32-bit software under a x86-64 OS provided you install the necessary x86 (32-bit) libraries.
The x86_64 CPU is fully backwards compatible with Intel x86 16-bit and 32-bit code. Because the full x86 16-bit and 32-bit instruction sets remains implemented in hardware without any intervening emulation, existing x86 executables run with no compatibility or performance penalties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64)
An application that is 32-bit or 64-bit will have to be linked or share the appropriate library. 32-bit and 64-bit libraries won't be confused because they use different names.

  • Install 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows?

I plan to install Windows using Parallels. I have a MacBook Pro i5 Intel processor. I haven't purchased Windows yet and noticed it comes in 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I tried reading up on the difference and I sort of understand what they are saying, but wanted to know which one is more compatible with a Mac? My computer is about a year and a half old. I probably will use it mostly to play games that are PC only, and also to test out the websites I develop to see how they look in a Windows environment on IE. Would appreciate any suggestions.

i would go with 64 bit.  With the larger instruction size, you will see a noticable improvement in speed and performance.   Since macs are built with 64-bit processors, this will not be an issue.

Although someone mentioned about the 865PE Neo3-F which maybe one but no one can confirm this as none of the manufacturers has brought it up yet but the fact that Prescott moving on to 64bit may be possible.

  • Confusing Performance Results--64-Bit and 32-Bit Geekbench Results

I don't understand all of my results for the performance tests mentioned in my subject. Can anyone help me understand what is going on?
I posted the results given below in an earlier thread. I don't think "we" had quite as good an understanding of the 32-bit kernel mode, the 64-bit kernel mode, and related topics back then. So, I am revisiting my results and looking for explanations. My results contradict some of the things we tend to say.
I have both Geekbench 32-bit and 64-bit. So, I made four quick benchmark passes. The Geekbenck scores from my four passes are given below. Note that the Geekbench programs are Mac universal. That is, they are made to run on both Intels and PowerPCs and apparently having started up in either the 32-bit or the 64-bit kernel mode. In general, such programs are not designed to run as either 32-bit or 64-bit. Doing so is not the same thing as simply running having started up in either the 32-bit or the 64-bit kernel mode)
    64-bit SL/64-bit Geekbench--4,263
    64-bit SL/32-bit Geekbench--3,910
    32-bit SL/64-bit Geekbench--4,159
    32-bit SL/32-bit Geekbench--3,809
    These results suggest that:
    1. 64-bit programs are faster than 32-bit programs whether run in 64-bit or 32-bit mode (sort of understandable--Incremental RAM is available under 64-bit mode, but should the difference be this large?);
    2. There is a performance penalty for running 64-bit programs in 32-bit mode (not understandable--64 bit programs are supposed to run essentially the same whether run under the 32-bit kernel or the 64-bit kernel); and
    3. 32-bit programs run faster in 64-bit mode than in 32-bit mode (not understandable--32 bit programs are supposed to run essentially the same whether run under the 32-bit kernel or the 64-bit kernel).

There does appear to be sensitivity to the kernel mode environment. Thus, there is some chance that we are overstating the case for starting in 32-bit mode not making a performance difference.
    Who is "we" in this?
I didn't take names, ranks, and serial numbers.
but it isn't as simple as one kernel outperforming the other. There are (fairly) well known tradeoffs in using the 64-bit kernel ("K64" in Apple jargon), the most significant of which for most users being loss of 32-bit driver support. There are also some concerns about the stability of the combination of available 64-bit drivers (including Apple's) & K64 on some of the >Macs that Apple "artificially" excludes from booting with K64.
Right, but these things are not pertinent to my tests. But, "we" also say those things.
I don't think anybody understands it all (I certainly don't!) but that's the >point: there really is no "we" in this.
As said, I didn't take names, ranks, and serial numbers of the "we" I referred to--those maintaining that there should not be performance differences of the types I have found and emphasized if 2 and 3 above.
Regarding your GeekBench results in particular, I'm still not sure what you find contradictory about them. 64 bit apps are more efficient than 32 bit ones. The 64 bit CPU instructions available with K64 are much more efficient at some > >things than their 32 bit counterparts.
OK, so then we should expect the sorts of performance differences I found, right? And, you agree that the performances differences I am emphasizing make sense, right? And, you would also agree that, barring need to use apps that won't run in 64-bit mode, those seeking maximum performance should start in 64-bit mode, right? You must not have been part of the original "we." But, now, you, I, and apparently others belong to a different "we"--the "we" that knows that such performance differences should be expected in the context of certain tasks (i.e., the important class of memory and CPU intensive tasks emphasized by Geekbench).
Because GeekBench isolates CPU & memory performance, it is going to be very sensitive to this. But that doesn't mean anyone should expect to see similar results for a practical application or base the choice (if they have it) of >using K64 with their Macs on this or any other benchmark results.
Right on the first sentence, but, importantly, my test isolates bit environment. Otherwise, can't we just stick with the issues raised in my post. I have never claimed we should expect or do the things you mentioned at this time. Further testing of apps and tasks, however, might imply the opposite. But, in general, you are battling mightily against a strawman that doesn't resemble me. I have acknowledged the issues you raise, in effect, as far back as my first post--not in your exact words, but at least implied.
IOW, one size does not fit all.
    Why preach to the choir?
