640x480 output

read several similar threads, but not specifically this one.
I have recorded several miniDV's from VHS tapes. I then capture using DV Firewire Basic.
When I play the raw capture file in QT, the Inspector tells me that the format is "DV 720x480 (640x480)" The "Normal Size" and "Current Size" both show 640x480. All of this is what I expect.
I then bring it into an SD sequence set at 720x480. When I export it, it is 720x480 in all the Inspector settings and has that slightly "squished" effect.
1) If I drop this into iDVD, I suspect that it will handle this for me properly so that it will display as true 4:3, correct? All part of the process of converting it to the iDVD specs, I'm guessing.
2) What would I have to do in FCE to have it export in full quality (non compressed) but in the 4:3 format? Basically, the same settings as the raw captured video?
thanks,
billy

2) What would I have to do in FCE to have it export in full quality (non compressed) but in the 4:3 >format? Basically, the same settings as the raw captured video?
Use File>Export>QuickTime Movie.
If no in/out points are entered in the Timeline the total Sequence will export.
Regards the size mystery: it's more about the way computers display images as opposed to interlaced TV monitors.
Set FCE to View>Level>Show as Square Pixels. That setting pretends to be a TV display. If this is not selected you will see the QuickTime/Computer way of deciphering the image.

  • How to change output video resolution.  I have 1920x1080 video but sharing from FCPX only allows 640x480.  I want 1920 output.  How can I resolve this?

I have 1920x1080 video file that I edited.  When I attempt to share the edited file from FCPX, it only allows 640x480 output resolution.  I want 1920 output.  How can I resolve this?

    Hi,
Final Cut will output the video at the resolution of your project's timeline.
You can change the settings and scale your project up though by adjusting the sequence settings and then, if necessary, copying and pasting attributes to scale up the sequence.
I had this question before and made a video explanation of how to re-scale a sequence here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=***9d-rHsKo&feature=youtu.be .
If you have any more questions about this then just drop me a message here.
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • 640x480 layout broken in iTunes 5

Moved this over from the Installation forum at the suggestion of b noir.
Just installed iTunes 5. Running on XP SP2, nVidia card hooked up to the TV, 640x480 output through S-Video. In fullscreen mode, the equalizer/'now playing' panel is hidden -- and if I can fool around with resizing the window and minimizing and maximizing to get it to appear, the window controls disappear or the layout runs off the right edge of the screen. The layout widgets don't want to share space, though there's enough. Did Apple up the screen size requirements or something Never had a problem in iTunes 4. Anyone else having a problem like this?

Any luck on getting Firefly to work with iTunes 10.6? I can get the NAS to show up on the left hand side, but I can't get iTunes to read it.

  • End video size

    hi,
i want to use imovie for some basic editting and rendering.
i have a load of mov's, captured using snapz pro x at 720x480 that i simply want to import, cut bits out, and export as one file for use in idvd.
    i have 2 questions...
    1. is there a way, in imovie, to change the end video size? im using 720x480 source files, and when i export as a movie it either crams it into a 640x480, or letterboxes it. i just want the output size to stay the same as the input size (720x480). if not, whats the optimum size people use for tv viewing?
    2. the content of my video is pretty intricate. its got a feint grey box in the middle of the screen, which the video plays in (screen in screen basically).
assuming that imovie will only give me 640x480 output, i cropped the clips to 640x480, inputted them, pieced them together, and outputed them. imovie gives me the right size, but really messes up the video. the grey line is blurred and not visible at the bottom, and the moving images themselves look awful.
all i want is to export a video that has the same properties (size, resolution etc) as the input files!
if screen grabs would help, i can put some up.
    thanks in advance

yes, i've had varied success with transferring screen grabs to tv. problem is, its the only option - im using a moving image enivronment (pure data) and the only way to save the video you create is through snapz (well, theres no way of saving it within the software).
one way i will try is to video out from the laptop into a tv and record with a dvd recorder, see if that helps.
i think its trial and error with the captures. the 720x480 looked pretty good, but the refresh rate was out and it flickered a fair bit. the refresh rate was better on 640x480, but it didnt look as good.
    thanks for the advice

  • Export MPEG-4 with Chapters?

I am using Adobe Premier Elements to edit and label home movies.   I want to export the movies to MPEG-4 format and distribute them to relatives on thumb drives for viewing on PC/iPhone/iPad.    Is there any way to preserve the Chapter Markers when the MPEG-4 file is created?     MPEG-4 as a format supports chapters and it would allow someone watching the video file to jump to the next chapter/ scene.    My Premier Elements project has chapter markers that work fine when I export to DVD, but the chapter markers are gone when I try to export to MPEG-4.

I found a solution and it works well.  I ended up using some freeware called Handbrake to create the MPEG-4 files with chapters.   The MPEG-4 videos can be played on a Computer, Smartphone, or Tablet.
Step 1: Create your Adobe Premier project with chapter markers
Step 2: Use Adobe Premier to create a DVD ISO folder of your project
Step 3: Use the Handbrake program to create an MPEG-4 file from your DVD ISO folder
You will want the MPEG-4 files to have an extension of .m4v (not .mp4), so that they will play on Apple and other devices.   Use the iPad setting in Handbrake which gives you 640x480 output.
    In Handbrake:
    Click Source
Choose Folder  d:\Home Movies in DVD iSO Image Folders\1966 Home Movies
    Under Preset, choose iPad
Click Start to encode the video
You now have a MPEG-4 version of your video that you can play on your iPad, iPhone, Android, Computer, or other devices.

  • Quad video output problem @ 640x480

When I connect my new Quad to a TV with the DVI to Video adapter there are some glitchy looking artifacts at the very top of the display. Some pixels of random colors but most of them are just black. This only affects the top 30 pixels or so and only on the TV (not on my main screen). The problem only exists when displaying at 640x480 and with overscan on. The problem persists whether using s-vid or composite cable. I have the stock graphics card, the nVideo 6600. I'll post a picture of the glitch to this thread when I can get my hands on a digital camera.

    Good morning from Croatia..

  • Do the ipods output 640x480 to TV's with the cable?

Now that they can play 640 movies, is that the resolution that shows up on a TV connected with the AV cable or dock?
I haven't been able to find this anywhere. I assume the answer would be the same for both the new model and the original 5G after firmware update?

Well, I didn't do much comparing, but yeah, I seem to recall the 320's not looking that great on my TV (which is why I use mpeg4 for my widescreen movies on the iPod-they can still be 640 wide on the old firmware). I'm looking forward to being able to crank up the bit rate on future movies now

  • Intel Mac mini and widescreen TV output (analog)

I just replaced my 1.25 GHz mini with a dual-core Intel one, and are really disappointed that the wide-screen resolution options are nowhere to be found. I'm using the Apple DVI-to-Video adapter with an S-Video cable.
On the G4 Mac mini, I would get 640x480 (NTSC 4:3), 800x480 (NTSC 16:9), 768x576 (PAL 4:3) and 1024x576 (PAL 16:9). Together with Overscan and Best for Video, I got a really nice picture on my 16:9 CRT TV (can display PAL and NTSC in either 4:3 or 16:9).
With the Intel Mac mini, I only get 640x480.
(The other available resolutions do not match with the actual NTSC or PAL frequencies or aspect ratios. For example, 720x480 or 720x576 is used as the pixel format for some digital media, but the pixels are not square, and so far, all software expects display pixels to be square. So it's actually quite useless.)
Is there a trick to get those resolutions to show up in Displays and become usable?

1.) I am using either 1920x1080 (interlaced) which is the resultion that has the worst problem with text sharpness. Now, I have discovered the Zoom feature in OSX and I can use it to some degree to make things readable. This may be my best option.
2.) I have done the calibraton and it does look quite a bit better. Those the DVD output is good but not great.
3.) Apparently, from what I have read, this is a common problem. Maybe a driver upgrade from Apple or Intel could fix?
I bought a Philips DVI cable. I know it's not the best but it should suffice. Monster cables seem to be overpriced. I plan to hook my PC to my HDTV with the same cable. My ATi card supports HD resolutions as well.
I also hooked the mini to my CRT that I have on my Dell and it looks very good there. I am impressed that OSX adjusts the resoltions that it can display upon boot. Even which switching displays.

  • External monitor not detected on Thinkpad W530 intel-virtual-output

I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
Then I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
    LVDS1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm

    640x480 59.94
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
If I select "Discrete mode" and select startup screen as VGA in the BIOS the BIOS and the Grub screens shows on the external monitor but the screen locks on the screen that shows that the system is booting with the linux-ck kernel. This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong
Below is my log with an external screen connected via Mini DisplayPort and after running:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
a few times, no more logs seem to be added when I connect/disconnect the monitor or when I run the above two commands more times.

  • VGA adapter will not output 1024x768!

I have the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter connected to an iPhone 4 and an Epson EX30 projector. Apple specifies that the VGA Adapter outputs only 1024x768 for iPad and iPhone 4. The EX30 projector has no manual resolution settings, and autodetects the iPhone 4's vga signal immediately upon starting videos or slideshows.
PROBLEM: When I run a Camera app slideshow, the photos are tiny, and surrounded by a large black border, as wide as the photos themselves. This is using photos that were shot with the high-res cam on the phone. The projector's auto-resolution info says the iPhone 4 is outputting 1280x720, instead of the correct 1024x768.
I tried an HD video shot with the iPhone 4 in the camera roll. This time it expands to meet the left and right sides of the screen, as one would expect, with a little black border on top and bottom.
Then I outputted a 1024x768 movie in iMovie and loaded it onto the phone. I played it, and the projector still reported resolution as 1280x720, and the movie was clearly surrounded on all sides by a black border, though much less of one than the photos were.
What's going on here, can someone else try the VGA output from a slideshow? I called AppleCare and they had no idea, and are going to get back to me next week.

I would like to output slideshows from the iPhone 4. What must I do? The output from the iPhone is read by my projector as 640x480! It looks terrible! Movies look okay, probably because I encoded them at 640x352. Another projector I tried claimed to receive a signal of 1280x720 but still looked awful and was still not the putative 1024x768 emitted by the iPhone 4.
I have tried an assortment of apps to view slideshows with text: goodreader, icab (supposedly fixed the vga output problem in Nov 5 update), perfect browser, atomic web browser, and all have extremely jagged fonts. The only even slight relief I got was in a photo of a magazine ad projected via the built-in photo gallery.
A related issue is that I can not seem to display high res jpg conversions of the slides through the browsers. Even if I load a 4000x2000 pixel jpg, the browsers that report resolution (iCab Mobile and Perfect Browser) never report above 1008x567 pixels.
Using the same vga adapter on my iPad yields perfect results. So I was hoping that iOS4.2, which I got today, would solve the problem. No such luck. I can not see any improvement.

  • No S-Video to TV output on PowerBook?

I know this is a MacBook Pro forum, but I didn't get a reply over at the PowerBook forum. Hopefully there's someone with PowerBook knowledge in this forum.
Yesterday I tried to hook up my sister's old 15" 1GHZ Ti Powerbook to her TV. The TV was black. No audio or video. I used an s-video/3.5mm stereo plug to scart cable. As per Apple's instructions, I rebooted the Mac and turned the TV off. I also played with different resolutions, including 640x480. During a reboot, the TV doesn't show any signs of getting a signal (no flicker etc).
Her TV is PAL but I didn't find anywhere in the Display settings where I could change the Mac's output to PAL or NTSC. Her TiBook is running 10.5.4.
Does anyone know what I could do to solve this. Also, could someone who has successfully connected their Powerbook to a TV through the S-Video output, tell me the proper procedure to do so. I just feel as if I should enable the S-Video output somehow but can't find any settings for it.

Daft suggestion, on my old PBG4, I spent a fair while in a similar position, the scart adapter had a slider on the top - this specified the convert direction - needless to say I had the slider the wrong way.
If that is not applicable, then make sure you have selected AV, and cycle though AV, incase there is more than one AV channel on your TV, as I am in the UK, my TV is also PAL, so that shouldn't make a difference.
If the mac finds the extra display, then screen goes blue, while it sorts itself out, if this doesn't happen, the mac is not 'finding' the TV.
    Hope it helps

  • Lightning Digital AV Adapter output 5.1 sound problem

    Dear all,
I tried search over web and could not find the actual answer for my issue with Lightning Digital AV Adapter
I bought Lightning Digital AV Adapter that wanted to output movie (with AC3, AAC track ) to my LCD TV via Yamaha Sound Bar YSP 2500.
But I could not get the 5.1 AC3 sound pass through from my iPhone 6 or iPad Air to Yamaha Sound Bar YSP 2500. It did not detect any 5.1 sound.
If anyone know Lightning Digital AV Adapter having hardware limitation to output or pass through 5.1 AC3 . Hope to find some answer in this forum. Thanks.

  • Using a TV as output for my laptop

I have a compaq presario V5000 with a broken screen that I'd like to use my Sanyo TV with.  I have the S-Video hooked up, and it lists it in xrandr (and flickers when I type xrandr!), but nothing is showing on it.  I'm using the xf86-video-intel driver and when I open lxrandr, select "Turn On" for the TV, it closes but nothing happens and it's not selected when I reopen lxrandr.  Here's the output of some relative commands, maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

The graphics adaptor on my Thinkpad R60 is the same. There is only the S-video connector. I rember having a similiar issue with tv-out on an ATI graphics card. The option there was to provide a TV compatible resolution / freq. setting and connect the graphics card to the TV. ie. for NTSC you would use something like 800x600 and 60Hz.
It's some time ago. Have you been lucky on this?

    Has anybody experienced this ?
    I don't have tried a downgrade on i3 yet.
    n0vember

Thanks for your answers, but actually I have two screens : laptop one LDVS-0 and LCD DP-1. I sometimes take my laptop with me, and would like my tray to follow. That's why primary is good.
Note that it used to work, but I didn't pay attention which update had it gone.
I will probably go with tray_output DP-1 as a workaround, but it's no good solution.
