8GB of Ram Installed only 4 showing up?

I installed 8 GB of Ram a couple of months ago and only 4 of the 8 are shoing up in activity monitor and in about this mac. I had been working fine I think I am pretty sure I checked. Any suggestions? I am running in 64 bit mode btw.

Re-seat them.
Run Apple Hardware Test. It will confirm the installed amount of memory and test it for integrity. To run AHT restart the MacBook Pro while holding the D key, until the AHT icon appears:

  • 8GB of RAM Installed, only 4GB detected/used by BIOS/Windows 7 (with P67A-GD55)

Let me start off by saying that I'm not very good with computers. At all. I know a little bit about them, but I am by no means an expert. That said, I have 8GB of RAM installed on my motherboard, spread out across 4 sticks. However, upon looking at my BIOS and my Windows Resource Monitor, it declares that I only have 4GB of RAM installed and usable. This is what I know so far:
    - This issue has been prevalent as long as I've had my computer, and by extension my motherboard and my RAM sticks, so this issue isn't recent.
    - I do have a 64bit version of Windows 7. I've checked and double-checked, and I'm 99.5% positive that it is.
    - Speccy, a 3rd party program designed for checking system specs, declares that I do, in fact, have 8GB installed.
    - I don't think that the RAM is bad because the BIOS still does pick up on different statistics of the RAM that are in the slots; it just fails to register the actual fact that they're there.
    System Specs:
    OS: Windows 7 64bit SP1
    CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K  @ 3.30GHz
    RAM: Patriot PSD32G133K 4x2GB DDR3 @ 498MHz
    Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD55 P67 LGA 1155
HDD: 977GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG HD103SJ ATA Device (SATA)
Optical Drive: LG DVDRAM GH24NS50 ATA Device
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB VRAM
    PSU: Cooler Master 750 Watt
    BIOS Version: E7681IMS V1.5
Now this is where it gets interesting: My motherboard has 4 DIMM slots for the RAM, and the motherboard (I assume by default) works in dual-channel mode. This means that DIMM 1 and 3 work together and so do DIMM 2 and 4, which most of you probably understand. However, filling up all 4 slots only gives me half the RAM. So I remove the RAM from slots 2 and 4, and it results in all 4GB of RAM being detected. Then, I add in each other RAM stick one at a time, and it fails to register both. So I remove the RAM from slots 1 and 3, and keep the RAM from slots 2 and 4, and it ends up in all 4GB being registered.
I feel like the answer should be directly in front of me, but from endless Google searches and posts on other forums, I have ended up at a dead end. I'm completely clueless, so I could really use some help.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Also, if this is the wrong forum for this, feel free to move it wherever.

What is your current UEFI/BIOS Version?
The usual cause of such problems is (apart from bad memory slots or a defect of the processor's memory controller) a contact problem between the boards CPU Socket contact pins and the CPU's contact pads.  Broke or bent pins are one explanation, in other instances a heatsink that is fastened to tight can also cause such issues.
I'll have the BIOS version up in a moment, but I'll see about diagnosing if one of those problems might just be what is my problem. Any tips on doing that?
Also, BIOS version is up in the OP now.

  • 4gb ram installed, only 2gb showing up?

I'm planning on upgrading soon as my macbook pro (13 inch mid 2010) has been running incredibly slow as of late, but just wondering why my ram is showing up as only 2gb when I have 4gb installed? It's probably just me being stupid, but I was hoping someone on here could clear this up for me.
I recently did a scan on crucial's website and it says I have 4gb, but now on the activity monitor it's showing 2gb, as well as on the 'about this mac' section, is it possible that one of the slots has come loose?

I doubt that the Crucial web site can accurately determine how much RAM you have. The, "About This Mac" System Report will be the best indicator of your RAM amount.
If you didn't buy the Mac with an optional 4 Gigs of RAM, it most likely shipped with 2 Gigs by default.
    Example:

  • My mid 2011 iMac has 8GB of RAM installed.  Photoshop CS5 tells me that there is only 2100MB of Available Ram.

My mid 2011 27" iMac has 8GB of RAM installed.  Photoshop CS5 > Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage tells me that I have 2100MB (ie 2.1GB) of Available RAM - which is ridiculous.  When I use DiskWarrior to defragment Time Machine  it tells me that "The directory of the disk "Time Machine" cannot be rebuilt.  There is not enough memory".
The same setup but with my old 24" plastic bodied iMac with the max of 3GB of RAM has no trouble at all with Disk Warrior and Photoshop CS5 tells me there is 2866MB of Available RAM.  Something is not quite right.
Can anyone advise me as to what the problem might be.  Do I have faulty RAM modules?

  • A700: 8gb of memory installed, only 4gb are being used

The a700 that I purchased from lenovo.com was the top model (40244JU) in the a700 series and came with 8gb of memory installed.  The os system screen properly shows the 8gb of memory installed.  The bios screen shows only 4gb of memory installed, thus only 4gb are being used by the computer.  Please tell me how to update the bios since there do not seem to be any bios updates for the a700 on lenovo.com.
    Thank you.

    Dear Customer
    - There are several additional situations that could cause the usable RAM to be less than expected. These issues and possible solutions are listed here:
    Check the system configuration settings
This problem may occur because the Maximum memory option is selected incorrectly. To fix this, follow these steps:
    Click Start
    Collapse this imageExpand this image
, type msconfig in the Search programs and files box, and then click msconfig in the Programs list.
In the System Configuration window, click Advanced options on the Boot tab.
Click to clear the Maximum memory check box, and then click OK.
    Restart the computer.
Full Ram will be working properly

  • 8GB installed, only 4GB showing

I installed 8 GB of RAM into my iMac 24 just after I bought my machine but since reformatting my internal drive my machine now reads 4GB.  Is there some setting somewhere that I need to turn on to allow the machine to register all 8GB?

We need to know EXACTLY which iMac you have and EXACTLY what RAM you installed. I suspect you installed RAM that is incorrect or you have installed 8GB into a machine that can only address 4GB (or possibly 6GB) of RAM.
To find out what iMac you have open System Profiler (Applicactions - Utilities - System Profiler) and copy the first page. It will look something like
DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT include your serial number information.

  • Computer recognizes 8GB of ram, but only uses 30% of it?

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    Intel Q9550
    ATI radeon 5770
    P5QPL-AM ASUS motherboard
    OCZ 8GB (2x 4GB) Platinum series RAM. pc2-6400 DDR2, 240 pin, non ecc, unbuffered
I have installed 8GB ram into my computer. Both my BIOS and system properties state I can use all 8GB of it. However- even when I put my computer under huge strain, I've never seen it go higher that 30-31%. It idles on about %20, so that means when I put strain on it, it only ever goes up by %10! I have not set a limit in msconfig either.
It's frustrating me why my computer isn't using all my ram. If anybody has any suggestions, let me know!
Here's an example: I open photoshop with a huge canvas (A0), and went crazy with a large brush. I've allowed PS to use %75 of my memory. PS lags heavily, yet my ram will not budge higher than 30-31%. Here is a screenshot of it. The ram is the steady blue line.
I would be extremely thankful if anybody could share any thoughts/information. Thanks

Okay, now that we've established that Photoshop is using all the RAM you've given it (which can be a lot higher on an 8 GB Windows 7 system, by the way; as much as 90%+), let's discuss the root problem you're having:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Mistle22 wrote:
...I open photoshop with a huge canvas (A0), and went crazy with a large brush...
...it would stop lagging and run smoothly...
... my Photoshop lag problem ... still persists and makes it impossible for me to work on A1 and (rarely) bigger canvases.
You've been vaguely referring to a "lag" problem...
Reading between the lines, I believe what you're saying is that if you paint on a large canvas with a large brush, you're experiencing some delays and non-interactive activity.  But no one here is a mind reader, nor are we sitting with you seeing what you're seeing.
Please take the time to specifically answer each of these questions:
Exactly what version of Photoshop are you running?
How many pixels in your "A0", and what is the bit depth?
What size brush (in pixels), and how hard (in %)?
    What is the brush Spacing?
Is it one of the fancy new brushes?
Are you painting with a tablet or mouse?
How far behind does Photoshop get (a fraction of a second? seconds?)?
Do you see the same performance issue with OpenGL enabled or disabled in Edit - Preferences - Performance.
Have you updated your video driver to ATI's latest 11.2 release from the AMD web site?
A little more detail would help us help you.
FYI, I just created an A0 sized RGB image at 150 ppi (7020 x 4965 pixels), 8 bit depth, and painted perfectly interactively on it with a 500 pixel round brush with 1% hardness and 25% Spacing.  However, there is a visible lag of up to about 1/2 second if I increase the brush size to 2500 pixels.  This is on a VERY powerful workstation with ATI 5670 card.

  • New G50-45 only able to use 3.46 of its 8GB of RAM

    Hey hey people.
I just purchased a Lenovo G50-45 laptop the other night, and while it's working fine, my memory useage is constantly at about 60%+ for reasons unknown to me. I checked the system specs and it says that it does in fact have 8GB of RAM installed, but only 3.46 of that RAM is actually usable.
Any ideas as to why this is? I cannot seem to find out myself.
    Thanks!
EDIT: I seem to have mostly fixed the issue by going in and swapping the places of the ram sticks. I'm now down to about ~20ish% of memory being used, with 6.96 GB of usable RAM.

If you are running windows 7 or 8 in 32bit you will not be able to use more than 4gb of ram. If 64bit you should be using all of it. If swapping memory sticks in sockets fixed this, you may have had one stick not fully seated in the socket.
If issue has not been corrected, you may have either a bad stick of memory or a bad socket. Would suggest contacting Lenovo Support or taking back to point of purchase for replacement.

  • My Mac have 2x4 (8GB) of ram but after installing Lion os x I can see 2x2 (4GB) or Ram only, I have tried every slot with swaping all the slots.

Friends I have upgraded my SL to Lion after installing I see only 4 GB of ram out of 8 gb (2gb x 4), I have tried all the options changing slots and swaping ram to different slots and card also.
    V' Sam.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply... I just downloaded your recomended software, this software test the memory which is in the list of system, which system says these memory slots are availble. but the issue with my system is different. My all ram slot are working well on both memory slot cards, but in actuall I have 4 memory sticks of 2gb each (8gb) which was installed on one card and when I installed Lion OS X it is showing only 4 GB of memory 2 memory sticks are showing only other 2 memory sticks are not showing in machine when we start and see in system information. I replaced 2 memory sticks with other they were also working and I even tried placing all memory sticks on other memory slot card they were also working but only 2 slots are showing... only 2 memory sticks of 2 gb - 4 GB out of 8 GB.

  • 2760p ONLY detects 8gb of RAM

Hi, this is the first time I post something in this forum even though I have found it very useful in the past, sadly I have not found my issue in any other posts.
What happens to me is the following:
I have an HP 2760p, I have two 8GB 1333 RAM modules installed in it, my problem is that my laptop detects both as if they were 4GB modules (it even detects an incorrect serial number for them) when they are both plugged in. When only one is plugged in, no matter which module I put in RAM 2 (under the keyboard), it is detected as 4GB, whilst if I put the same in RAM 1, it's detected as 8GB. I am perplexed at this situation, does anyone have idea?
It is detected like this directly by the BIOS. Is there some kind of limit I was not aware of? AFAIK in the information I've read about the 2760p, it's capable of up to 16GB.

I looked at the 2760p Maintenance and Service Guide at URL http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03011611.pdf
Refer to page 57. It stresses checking the BIOS update level. The problem may also be a connector's problem with one of the address pins or anywhere on that address line on the motherboard, but start by checking the bios revision.

  • Can i add a single 8GB or ram with my already installed 2x2 GB of RAM?

I need to upgrade my RAM. I have the original 2x2GB of RAM installed but want to know if i can add a single 8GB of RAM with the 2x2GB already installed? Please help?

Here is some info; and below that is an excerpt which appears to apply to your model:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US
Additional notes  i5 and i7 Quad Core iMac computers come with both top memory slots populated. These computers will not start up if only a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot; these computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any top slot. Core Duo iMac computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any slot, top or bottom. ("Top" and "bottom" slots refer to the orientation of the slots in the pictures below. "Top" refers to the slots closest to the display; "bottom" refers to the slots closest to the stand).
Now I always get confused which slots Apple deems to be the top or the bottom on the newer Macs - they seem to be looking at it from a different angle than I am. Yours is a 2011 - do you still have two rows with 2 slots each? Yours is working and recognizing it; if I remember correctly Apple calls the top what I'd call the bottom when the iMac is laying screen down. In any case, you should be fine as long as it's working.

    I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • How well will Premier run on a MacBook Pro Retina i7 with only 8GB of RAM?

My niece wants to do some video editing using Premier and we were wondering if there would be a problem running it on a MacBook Pro with i7 and retina display with only 8GB of RAM? I know 16GB would be better but that is not an option at this point. She is not looking at really large projects.

I am running Vista Home Premium with 2GB RAM and 2ghz processor just fine. I used to run XP too prior to upgrading to Vista. XP undoubtedly flew with 2GB RAM however Vista runs smoothly as well.
As far as overheating is concerned, both XP and Vista run hotter than OSx and noticeably so. The thing to note is that Vista does not run any hotter than XP on my macbook pro.
