8iLite,SQL*PLUS Won't start, ORA-12203

I d/l'd 8iLite and I am running on WIN95. In the log on dialog box for SQL*PLUS, I typed username = scott and password = tiger and got the error message: ORC-12203:TNS: unable to connect to destination. (This indicates that the username and password are acceptable.)
Earlier, I was in Oracle Navigator and tried to set myself up as a new user. From the file menu, I selected Createdb.exe and I go the error message: C:\orawin95\BIN\Createdb.exe has a bad format. I also selected crdb35.exe from the file menu and got the error mesage: c:\orawin95\BIN\crdb35.exe has a bad format.
In each case, I clicked OK to close the dialog box and attempted to enter the new user properties anyway; in each case I got the error message ORA-12203:TNS:unable to connect to destination.
I am wondering whether the root cause of the problem is that Createdb.exe and crdb35.exe are corrupted, and is so, what to do about it. My main goal is to get SQL*PLUS running on the sample (POLITE) database.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated. If someone would email me good copies of Createdb.exe and crdb35.exe, I'll try that.
Thanks, Gary

  • Zen Nano Plus WON'T START / RECOVERY / RES

Hello ZNP friends and fellow victims of frustration,
I have the GB Zen Nano Plus and a Windows XP operating system. My Zen is just over 3 months old, and a few days ago I started having the "stuck on Logo or hour glass (building library) problem". Like many of you, it has frustrated me beyond belief in my attempts to correct it. I'm certainly not a computer whiz, but I'm fairly good at following clear, numbered, valid instructions. I have tried many of the offered cures for this problem as provided in the discussion forum. None have worked for me.
I have just stumbled onto/into the fix for the WON'T START / RECOVERY / RESCUE problem. At least, I hope it lasts. The bad news is that I don't know or remember the steps for the cure. The good news is that the problem can be fixed. In the frustration of trying a million variations on the steps offered in the discussion area, I happened to fix my nano plus. I was becoming like a hyper zealot playing a slot machine.
What I do remember is this:
) I did download the application ZenNanoPlus_PCFW_LF___0 and install it, and put an icon on my desktop so I could activate it easily.
    2) I did double click it to call it up.
    3) I attached my nano plus via USB to the computer. I don't remember if I had to do that before or after bringing up the above application. (You may have to try both.)
    4) I did leave the battery out of the nano plus during this operation.
    5) I was required to reformat the nano plus which eliminated anything on it. When the instruction came on to reformat, it said "... area" so I was worried that the reformat might include more than the device itself but it didn't.
    6) Then I loaded a song, disconnected the device from the computer, put in a battery, and it started fine.
What a task that whole process was! Of course I'm not telling you anything new. I was tempted to just get on with life, but then I thought I should really share this with those of you who have been in the trenches...to let you know that a cure is possible.
Creative should really have a clear set of instructions by now for fixing this problem.
    Good luck!
    Buck

Have you updated the firmware? this could be the major cause. Also, MP3 has far fewer kinks as a uni'versal format than WMA. If possible, I highly suggest using MP3 on MP3 players.

  • SQL Server won't start - unhelpful error message in log

I am running SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008.  SQL server had been running using a netowrk account, which i then changed over to a dedicated Active Directory account, and I tried restarting the server.  It failed to restart, and produces a number of identical error messages in the event log.  The error message is below:
initerrlog: Could not open error log file ''. Operating system error = 3(failed to retrieve text for this error.  Reason: 15105)
I've searched the web and have not found a solution.  It appears to be a permissions problem (the "Reason: 15105" indicates such), but the permissions on all the data and log folders are correct.  The fact that it fails to list the error log file is the must frustrating of all since it gives me no indication of where to look for the problem.
If I try switching the the SQL Server user back to the network account it gives the following error:
WMI Provider Error [call to WMI Provider returned error code: 0x800742a2]

    Hi Guys,
The solution of Tibork is the working one for me.
What I did to get this error:
I wanted to move my TempDB to another volume (e). I executed following query:
    USE master
    GO
    ALTER DATABASE tempdb
MODIFY FILE (NAME = tempdb, FILENAME = 'E:\tempdb.mdf')
    GO
    ALTER DATABASE tempdb
MODIFY FILE (NAME = templog, FILENAME = 'E:\templog.ldf')
    GO
Stopped the SQL Server instance and moved the TempDB files from the original DATA folder.
After that, when I restarted the server, it gave me the 1814 error. I tried to undo my actions with no luck.
The working solution for the problem was indeed access rights. I know its not best practice, but since we are in a protected environment I choose to remedy the problem with Tibork's solution:
Start > Control Panel > Adminsitrative Tools > Services
    Find the SQL Instance
    Right click and choose Properties
    Find the logon tab
I changed the logon to "Local System Account"
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the hint.

  • RAC instance won't start: ORA-00443: background process "VKRM" did not star

I've logged a SR with Oracle, but while waiting for response from them...I'm stumped I can't find more out here about this article.
On Oracle knowledgebase...any search for VKRM, gives about the same 3 articles relating to RDA (Remote Diagnostic Assistant).
Not sure what went on here.
I have a 5 node RAC cluster. All other instances seem to be running just fine.
On one instance...some applications were getting an error like:
ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress
I looked in GRID...and it indicated that only two of the 5 nodes had this instance running...which was strange in that with srvctl, it showed ll 5 up and running:
    [oracle@server2 bin]$ ./srvctl status database -d INSTANCE
Instance INSTANCE1 is running on node server1
Instance INSTANCE2 is running on node server2
Instance INSTANCE3 is running on node server3
Instance INSTNANCE4 is running on node server4
Instance INSTANCE5 is running on node server5
Anyway, thought I'd poke around. I started with trying to get srvctl to stop instance #2...in GRID it seemed that instance 2,4 and 5 weren't working.
    srvctl stop instance -D INSTANCE -i INSTANCE2
    This just hung...
I thought I'd cycle all the nodes...so, did a ctl-c out of that one, and did:
    [oracle@server2 bin]$ ./srvctl stop database -d INSTANCE -o abort
PRCD-1124 : Failed to stop database INSTANCE and its services
    PRCR-1065 : Failed to stop resource (((((NAME STARTS_WITH ora.instance.) && (NAME ENDS_WITH .svc)) && (TYPE == ora.service.type)) && ((STATE != OFFLINE) || (TARGET != OFFLINE))) || (((NAME == ora.instance.db) && (TYPE == ora.database.type)) && (STATE != OFFLINE)))

The ORA-01034 messages repeats a number of times...and the one with server4 and server5 repeated again too.
    I also got this:
    CRS-2680: Clean of 'ora.instance.db' on 'server2' failed

I get similar messages when I try to restart.

    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Ok..have been on phone with Oracle support, and have them stumped so far.
I've checked..other instances are running (except one other that failed to cleanly shut down with srvctl and same error messages).
I've check...ASM is running on all 5 nodes. I've used crsctl to check CRS on all nodes..clustering seems ok.
Memory while somewhat high...should have enough room...the system has never complained before, and this has been up on this config for over a year.
I was able on node one...to fire up the first nodes instance using the pfile there...it came up. I started it restrict..and promptly ran a datapump export, and then shut back down.
While Oracle support is going through logs and trace files I sent...I've got another 11Gr2 environment (3 node RAC) I've been using as a test environment...and am recreated the instance there temporarily to allow my developers to test and get past the upcoming deadline.
But, I'm still puzzled as to the solution on the main cluster. This seem to be normal, except these two instances....
any ideas on where and what to look for?

  • SQl Developer won't start

I am using Windows XP Professional. I am also using Java 1.6.26. Whenever I try to start SQL Developer, nothing happens. Is there a log for SQL Developer that I could look at somewhere on my machine? I don't get any errors.... its just that nothing happens. I can see the sqldeveloper.exe process pop up momentarily and then disappear sometimes when I look at Task Manager while trying to start SQL Developer. Any advice?

what a nightmare install oracle 11g in windows 7, it's an awful experience, i take introduction to sql and workshop I from oracle university, and i need to practice with in my 32 bit laptop SQL developer simply doesn't works, my first install was corrupted, then i reinstall and get a second no functional installation and neither of both can be uninstaled. i think that i may be need to reinstala the operating system, what a waste of time :-(

You see the article for getting update :
Before you can start to use FILESTREAM, you must enable FILESTREAM on the instance of the SQL Server Database Engine. Enabling/configuring FILESTREAM is a bit different from configuring other SQL features because it involves making machine wide changes
and not only SQL instance changes. Also, FILESTREAM configuration has been changed for the February CTP to properly separate the Windows Built-in administrator and SQL administrator roles. In the November CTP, enabling/disabling FILESTREAM required Built-in
Admin privilege. Enabling FILESTREAM is now made up of 2 admin layers:
    1-
The Windows configuration layer handles Windows related setup changes required for FILESTREAM. This requires built in administrator privilege. FILESTREAM settings in the SQL Configuration Manager (SQL-CM) represent this admin layer.
    2-
The SQL configuration layer handles the setup changes required within the boundaries of the SQL instance. The SQL Admin can now use sp_configure/RECONFIGURE to handle this FILESTREAM configuration.

Hmmm...bad board.  I guess my context was completely wrong.  Hehehehe

    Quote from: jcniest5 on 20-June-09, 03:59:58
Buddy, just a word of advice...6GB OCZ Platinum DDR2-12800 and MSI Eclipse Plus just don't mix.  I have exactly the same combo and was not able to make it work right until I went and bought Corsair 1600 memory.  The OCZ memory has tighter memory timing, but it works horrible, even when I relax their timing to 9-9-9-24 like that of Corsair.  Still crapping out every single time, even at stock speed (non-OCed CPU)!  I originally thought that my memory kit was bad, si I RMAed it, got a new kit from OCZ, installed it, same thing!  My conclusion?  OCZ Platinum and Eclipse Plus just don't mix.
The Corsair memory kit works perfectly, stock or OCed.  To further isolate my issue, I OCed the CPU to a certain speed, use the relaxer timing of the two memory kits and tried one at a time.  I've tried running it at 1066, 1333, 1600 and everything in between.  With the Corsair memory, I was to run my board stable at everything.  As soon as I changed to the OCZ memory, the PC crapped out every single time.  It would crash, freeze, BSODed out....etc...etc....  The OCZ memory is now sitting on the shelf.
Go and get a different brand of memory.  It will make a world of a difference, I tell ya.
well i would belive that my pc atleast would run fans e.t.c  even if it was the ram, as its now. i`l steal some ram from a buddy and see.
    thanks for ur tip.

  • Learning PL/SQL with SQL plus

I'm looking to teach myself PL/SQL with SQL Plus, it's a works pc so I can not use any other software than SQL plus.
When starting SQL plus I'm asked for a username, password and host string.
I'm taking it the host string is the db I want to connect to and obviously supply the username and password for level of access?
Also what I ideally need is a sample db on my local machine to connect to with SQL plus to learn that way.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Use the net8 configuration assistant preferably as it'll get the syntax correct.
Otherwise you copy the sample one up one folder and edit that.
Connection information (SID, Server/IP, port number) you'll have to get off your DBA.
The name at the start of a tnsnames entry is the name that you want to reference the database as, so you can call it FRED if you like.
    e.g.
    FRED =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS =
            (PROTOCOL = TCP)
            (HOST = <server name or ip address>)
(PORT = <port>) -- usually 1521 but can differ if more than one instance on the server
        (CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = <database SID>) -- the name of the database on the server.
)Once that's set up you can then log onto the database in the following way:
    sqlplus <user>/<password>@fred
What happens is that the TNS Listener service (that should be running on your PC) will look up "fred" in the tnsnames.ora file and then use the information from that to make the connection to the server on the correct port and connect you to the actual database on there.
After that.... it's up to you.

  • Database Engine won't start - master DB log file issue

I had a server patched and reboot yesterday and now the SQL services won't start because it's saying it can't find the master log file. I checked the path and the log file is present. Any suggestions.

That did it.  Not sure why that switch was there.
It might have been intended, but it was added incorrectly. -g512 is a legal switch. Then again, since you have 64-bit SQL Server, it is not likely that you will needed.
(The -g switch increases the area known as memtoleave, which is the virtual address space (VAS) not used for the buffer cache. On 32-bit SQL Server you may need to increase this area from the default of 256 MB. On 64-bit SQL Server the full physical memory
is available for VAS; on 32-bit it's only 2GB.)

  • SQL*Plus improvement suggestion - Filtered History Recall

    Hello,
In various command line interpreters I've used, typing the first few characters of a command one wishes to recall, causes the history buffer to only cycle thru the entries that start with the characters typed.
It would be really convenient to see this feature, that is standard in many command line interpreters, be implemented in SQL*Plus.
For example, typing "sele" would cycle through lines that start with "sele" (such as select) and no other lines.
    Thank you.
    John.

    Hello Jgarry,
    >
I hate, hate, hate that, ...
    >
You are probably thinking that I was talking about those annoying hints that get in your way as you type. I despise those things too. I'm not talking about that.
This is what I'm talking about.... say that you have typed a large number of commands in SQL*Plus since you started the session... the history buffer looks like this (abbreviated):
    select empno, .....
    insert into ....
    create table ....
    select deptno ...
drop table .... currently in SQL*Plus, if you press the up/down arrow, it will cycle thru the history showing the next/previous command in the history buffer...
    what I'm suggesting is...
type the letter i then press the up arrow and SQL*Plus would cycle thru the commands that start with i in the history buffer (instead of mindlessly starting at the most recent command).. in the example above.. it would immediately place the "insert into ... " at the command line ready to be reexecuted, it there were multiple statements that start with i in the history buffer, it would only cycle thru those and ignore the others.
currently SQL*Plus ignores anything typed at the command line when the up/down arrow is pressed, it simply overwrites it with whatever is the first command in the histroy buffer. This behavior makes it inconvenient to recall a command that was issued many commands ago. (not to mention that when you're used having the feature and then having SQL*Plus overwrite the partial command is highly annoying)
Hopefully this makes the feature I am asking for a little clearer. It's worth noting that most command line based utilities have this filter feature, SQL*Plus is a rare exception.
    John.

  • Running SQL*Plus in WEB-Forms

    Hi,
I have a problem to run an existing SQL-script in a web environment. The forms application running in a client server environment calls a sqlplus script via HOST-command.
The SQL-Script itself asks the user to enter several values (ACCEPT-command).
Now the forms application has to be migrated to WEB-Forms (Forms6i). If I still use the HOST-statement, SQL*Plus will be started on the application server. The user has no chance to enter any input value.
So the idea was to use iSQL*Plus. But iSQL*Plus has some restrictions, which are preventing to run the existing scripts.
    - SPOOL is not supported anymore (SP2-0850: Command "spool" is not available in iSQL*Plus)
    - ACCEPT is not supported anymore (SP2-0850: Command "accept" is not available in iSQL*Plus)
Has anybody an idea for surrounding this problem?
    My boundary conditions are
    - running different SQL scripts which are using ACCEPT to ask the user to enter values
    (workarounds for ACCEPT are possible!)
    - spooling the result set to the file system for further processing
    Thanks in advance
    Detlef Kuhfahl

    Hi Kevin,
The SQL-scripts are not trivial. They make a select to give the user a choice of the available values.
Sure I can build a form to serve these requirements, but the customer writes these scripts by itself. He is not able to make a new forms application for every SQL-Script.
So he wants to keep the "old" technology. SQL*Plus is much more flexible then forms can be, compared to the effort you have to do.
We need a solution with iSQL*Plus or SQL*Plus
