90% of pictures disappeared after adding Maverick. My Time Machine folders were in the right order but mostly empty so useless for restore. Repair and rebuild attempts were not effective. Downloaded my Carbonite file which is now sitting on my desktop. Is there any way to use the restore command to rebuild my portfolio or do I have to drag & drop approx 20,000 pictures? Can album groupings and faces be retained?

Do you still have the original library that was present at the time you upgraded to Mavericks? If so apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Try a Repair on the External USB Drive.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Unless you'd signed up to iTunes Match then they won't be in the Cloud, only music purchased from iTunes (if you are in a country where music can be re-downloaded) will be there. Have you not still got it on your computer and/or on a backup which you can use to sync it back to the iPad ?

Can't Boot After New HD + Time Machine Restore

So a couple days ago my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard started making some weird noises and stalling out. Annoyed, I talked for a couple hours with apple tech support which eventually lead me to run an Apple Hardware Test. This test returned the error
"Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.
4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)"
I scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they replaced the hard drive.
After that I got it home and did a System restore from my time machine backup. It finished fine, but when I restarted it got stuck on the grey apple screen with the spinning dial thing.
I called apple back and they had me do a couple things like repair disk, verify disk, and one person had me reboot into this command line mode and type some stuff in. Nothing worked. After that They had me try to reinstall the OS first from archive, and next by erasing the hard drive and doing it. Both times the install fails with a big yellow exclamation point saying that it couldn't install support files and the OS couldn't be installed.
Any ideas how to fix this?
I'm currently trying to restore from my time machine backup again, but I'm not hopeful.

Here's what I got - apologies for any formatting peculiarities.
The problem: 10.6.6 mac won't boot after time machine restore to disk.
Further symptoms: Booting with Command-v shows several errors: usually blued and loginwindow collapse with errors from launchd. Errors will be of the style "dyld: Symbol not found: CSSMOID_APPLE_TP_MACAPPSTORERECEIPT" and other CommerceKit / CommerceCore framework errors.
A solution: Your Framework Security library may be an older version (possible cause with Time Machine below). The easiest way to fix this is to find another, working 10.6.6 Mac, and update the Security library on the broken machine.
Identifying if you're affected:
1) Boot the broken machine into "target" mode - hold "Command-t" during boot until the [Firewire|http://itunesu.utah.edu/terms/images/Firewire_Icon.png] icon appears.
2) Connect the broken machine to the working 10.6.6 machine with a firewire cable.
3) On the working machine, the disk of the broken machine should mount.
4) Open Terminal
5) Run "ls /Volumes" - the name of disk you mounted should be there (in this example, we'll use "Macintosh HD".)
6) Typing in the path of the broken machine, run:

(this does a dump of the library, looking for the version value)
If this comes back with the value 22457 (or less?), your Mac is not booting because it does not have the updated version of the Security library, which is required in 10.6.6 since Snow Leopard added the Appstore / Commerce framework.
Fixing if you're affected:
1) First, make sure the working 10.6.6 Mac has a correct version of the framework:

For 10.6.6, this should be at least "22458"
2) *Be extremely careful at this point* - Make sure on the mounted disk (not the machine you are working on!) run the following

3) Eject the mounted disk from the working Mac, disconnect the firewire cable, and reboot the "broken" Mac. It should come up.
If it doesn't, you have problem(s) that are probably outside the scope of this. I'd also suggest restoring your original security library that you saved off.
Suspected cause:
It appears that Time Machine never recorded the change to the Security library after the update. If the library hadn't changed, the machine should have failed to boot like it did after restore the moment a 10.6.6 update was applied.
Inspecting the contents of my Time Machine backups before and after updating shows that Time Machine never updated the Security Framework library - why is still not 100% determined, but restoring from it is definitely broken. Combing through the backup databases on my Time Machine disk:

Time Machine Has Never Performed a Full Backup that Can Be Restored From

I've been backing up my system via time machine to a time capsule. I'm using the same time capsule for both my mac and my wife's. My wife's mac is backing up fine with numerous full backups that can be restored from. However, when I recently booted into recovery mode, I discovered there were no full backups of my mac that I could restore from. I've been using this time capsule for about a year now so I'm concerned as to why there are no full backups. I can enter time machine and see my docs and files...just no full backups. Honestly if you want a reliable full backup get CCC or other clone type backup and do a disk image to a USB drive that you can then test boot from. Then use TM for incrementals..

Does that mean you cannot move it to the TC and plug in by ethernet? What does bypass mean?
I would still move it closer to the TC.. and just trial it there. Range on some AC models for 2.4ghz is worse than old one. For some people.
Another thing to try is fixed wireless channels.. one of the very few options still available in the AC model.. lock the 2.4ghz to 11, 6, 1 .. try it in that order.

Drag and Drop disappear issue

Hello, I'm making a game in which I have some drag and drop items that they can be multiplied as many as you want. This items have to stay in the scene and I also have a bin in the menu where If you drag them they have to disappear.The problem is that I tried with multiple coordinates and they disappear also in the scene in the moment that I'm dragging them out of the menu. So, my question is:What could be wrong? Is the issue in the code?

Chances are that the problem lies in the following line:
if (_DDB1.x>700 || _DDB1.x < 755 || _DDB1.y < 240 || _DDB1.y > 155) {
That line essentially says if(the object is anywhere) due to using the OR ( || ) operator. If any one of those things is true then the condition is satisfied, which becxause they overlap will always be true for at least two of them. If that is supposed to be restricting the object to within an area you likely want to all of those conditions to be satsified. So in that case you need to use the AND operator ( && ).

Can't drag and drop apps in iTunes library after a restore

Came back from an update (having transferred all new purchases off my ipod before updating) to find ipod completely empty, and needed to restore! (ipod only 2 months old) Initially couldn't drag and drop any of the library back into restored ipod, but after a computer restart, books and music transferred fine. But no apps (including the ibooks app) will drag across to the ipod: they just become a circle with a slash through.... what am I missing here?

Thanks David - that wasn't it, but I have managed to find a fix after trawling through various forums - I logged out then logged back in. Simple as that! Sadly I'm still none the wiser as to what caused the problem in the first place, so don't know if or when it'll reoccur. I also found it was affecting iPhoto after I first posted, so not an iTunes specific problem obviously. Thanks to all those who posted fixes in various forums, though some looked a little too scary for me to try out...

Drag and Drop Success Message and Timer on all frames in Captivate

Hi All,
I am trying to do two things in a captivate project I am working upon currently. They are :-
1. I have a drag and drop exercise where I have chosen the setting that the drop does not accept the incorrect drag item and sends it back immediately. I am trying to make a success caption like 'Good Job' or somethign appear on the user putting all the drag source in the correct drop boxes. I am not using the submit button. Once the success caption appears the user can click on a next button to move to next slide. I am not able to put the success caption there.
2. I am trying to put an active timer on the slides so the user can see the total time of elearning, time elapsed or time left on all slides.
Can you guys help me out with these issues I have.

What did you do with the Submit button? Did you activate Auto Submit? Be careful with just deleting essential objects for D&D, same as for question slides.

Can you drag and drop programs from 1 computer to the other??

I have finalcut studio on my dual gig g4 but now I want to work off my laptop and sell the dual gig g4. Only problem is that I have my finalcut studio disks buried in a big stack of boxes in preparation for a move. Is there a way I can transfer the programs to my laptop without haveing to dig in all these boxes for the install disks?

You do not want to drag and drop - it does copy the program, sure. But it does not bring over over ALL the necessary components and frameworks needed to run. So it no worky.
Solution - clone off the whole OS, programs, et al to an ext fw drive and boot off that.
You'll want a pcmcia adapter to give you 2 buses so that one fw disc can hold the media and the other fw disc to hook into the built in bus.
For the OS fw disc you'll find that using the fw 400 port is fine.

I also started having problems with iPhoto after installing Yosemite. Some of the Event collections lost the picture and just has a grey square in its place. When I click on the Event, it shows a white dotted lined square for each picture and if I click on the picture, it shows an exclamation mark.
Check, if you also are having a folder "Old Masters" inside the iPhoto Library package, as described by Muhamad Abdulkadir.
Ctrl-click (or right-click) your iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder , then select "Show Package Contents". If you are seeing a folder "Old Masters", copy this folder out of the library. Look inside - are the original image files of the problematic photos inside?

After sorting photos into albums, the albums disappeared on me. I dragged and dropped the photos and went back to check that they were in place before exiting the program. When I went back, the folder was there but no albums. Help!

Working on an IMac - with IPhoto v.9.6
This is my first experience with IPhoto... trying to move files from a PC over to a Mac.
I don't have a ton of photos but I created about 6 albums - standard albums - and dragged and dropped individual photos into each of the albums. I named each of the albums as well so I would know what was in each. After i was finished, I created a folder called 2014 and moved each of the albums into that folder. Before moving ANY of the albums, I opened each of them up to make sure that all the photos I wanted in each were indeed there - and since there were some errors on my part, I deleted any duplicates first. SO, I KNOW the photos were actually in each of the albums BEFORE i moved them into the 2014 folder.
My intention was to then delete the photo files in my document file but once I got there I thought I would go back and double check the IPhoto file just to make sure... and the pictures were NOT in the albums where I had placed them... is there a need to save this before you move on and if so, to where and how? I was under the impression that once files were moved to albums, they remain there.
The photos are still in the photo library but unsorted now again... I cannot even open the 2014 folder at this point.

Was back on IPhoto this morning. The folder did not open at all so I deleted it. Beside Albums, nothing showed at all. It was like I had done no work at all except to import my photo folder. Nothing was in my trash bin either.
I started again and created one album at a time. I dragged and dropped photos into the album and exited out of IPhoto, opened up other programs and then returned to IPhoto to see if the album was still there and it was this time. I created a second album and did the same thing. This time, for some reason, the albums seem to be staying in place. I am not doing anything differently than last time. After creating three albums, I created a folder called 2014 and dragged and dropped the three albums into the folder and exited IPhoto. They were still there when I returned - YEAH! It seems to be working - for now! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my photos are not going to disappear but I am not going to delete my photo folder from my files just in case!
Thanks for the suggestions but this may just have been a funny glitch... not sure what happened. I didn't change anything or do anything differently this time except that I am doing it one album at a time and exiting the program between creating each of them and coming back to check... very strange.

Custom desktop picture disappears after restart

Ever since I purchased my MacBook Pro my custom desktop picture disappears after a restart. I select a photo either from the internet or my iphoto library and when I reboot the computer it goes back to the original desktop pattern, my photo is gone. Has anybody noticed the same problem on theirs and if so, have you found a solution? Its not a big deal, mostly goes under 'curious why this happens and how can I fix it' category . . .

Try running the combo update.
10.9.4 Combo Update
If that doesn't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

London pictures disappear after enable iCloud Photo Library. It is any kind of problem with UK? =)

I have about 1000 pictures in my iPhone. (About 900 from Brazil, took with my Brazilian SimCard).
Last year, I went to London and took about 50 pictures there. In that time, my iPhone was a 4S, with iOS7. (With a UK Number from a UK SimCard, don't know if this is relevant).
2 Months after, I went to US and purchased a 5s. Took about 50 pictures too, (With a US number, from a US card).
Today, I did the update to iOS 8.1, but when I enabled the iCloud Photo Library, all pictures from London just disappear.
Before iOS 8, we had something like that in iOS 7 ( I guess it was iCloud sync), and every time I do enable this thing, all pictures from London disappear. I have to restore my backup and let the feature off to have my pictures.
Anyone have any hint about why this is happen, or how to solve this thing?

Well by luck I figured out.
Restored the backup that I had with all pictures.
Went to the photo Library and selected the photos that disappear.
By some reason, don't know why, a "save" option appeared to me. I clicked in save (don't know from where to where), and when I turned on the Library sync again. Tandam!! The photos didn't disappeared.
Anyone know how to explain this?
