A captive of Verizon

Feb 14, 2014
My troubles have been ongoing since about August of last year, I think.  Frequent periods of slow speed, router auto-recycling several times a day, lost internet altogether, and a graph from Speedtest.com that looks like the broken glass on top of a wall.  A visit by technician at that time discovered a degraded wire between router and wall.  I replaced the wire, things worked for a few months.  (I was out of the country for two months in the fall and therefore do not know how my connection behaved for that period.  It was running more or less successfully when I returned in November.)
Some months after that visit which prompted replacing the cable, more problems of the same variety: slow speed, frequent router recycling, no connection at all, jagged line speed.  The next solution was a new router, to replace my existing one which was, according to what I recall, at least five years old.  The replacement worked for some weeks, I think.
Then that router, too, failed in the same ways: slow speeds, recyclings, dropped connection altogether, jagged speed.
This time, one of your techs told me the trouble was with the new router but since I didn't have router insurance with Verizon, I was going to be charged $39.95 for the new new router.  Against my instincts, I was finally forced to agree, as she was adamant that her testing had confirmed a faulty router.  Considering the trouble I'd been having, I doubted it had anything at all to do with the router.  On a subsequent call to Verizon very soon thereafter, I was informed that the lady had been wrong.  Since it was Verizon's router, they'd replace it for free.  I knew that this had been your policy previously and pointed that out to the first tech, who informed that the policy had changed in the intervening years.  In any event, I now have a replacement router for the replacement router and it has behaved as the other two.
Either before or after this incident, a tech came out here to look at my troubles and the end result was, and I think I have his exact words, that he changed my 'meeting point card.'  (Yet another house call tech used a different term, an acronym, but I do not recall what it was.)  That worked for a few days then back to the inadequate conditions related above.
Somewhere along the line, yet another tech, over the phone, 'conditioned' (reconditioned?) my line, which also helped for a few days.  Then back to status quo ante.
This week, yet another house call, this time to rewire things in the junction box outside.  He informed that he had changed the wiring such that one of my wall jacks was devoted to the internet alone and that the other jacks would be for phone calls.  The next day some rather strange things began to happen -- other than the usual swift collapse of my connection, as always -- my telephone had trouble dialing out or, when it had managed to do so, my keyboard entries were unrecognizable.  (I managed to get one call through to your 800 567 6789 number but it refused to recognize my keyed home phone number.)  I tried this with two different instruments, connected through that splitter, so it was not a failure of the keypad on a single phone but after that one single success, every call to your number produced a message saying I had not input the '1' that precedes area codes -- but of course I had, several times.  Incoming calls had no problem.
I wake with a smile on my lips every day now because I know that some of my lonely, empty hours will be filled waiting with recorded music (always the same, thank you, no disturbing surprises) and keying in the same data, announcing yet again what my operating system is.  (How many of your customers change operating systems during an ongoing ticket, I wonder.  As you may know, the question about my operating system comes after the question about 'is this call related' to all those pesky calls I've been making these past weeks.)
Via Skype (mercifully it was during one of the lulls when my internet connection worked), I called Verizon to report that brand new effect: I couldn’t make any outgoing calls.  Before getting transferred to the tech about my outgoing phone calls, I spoke -- I wish I could give you a count on how many happy times I've gotten to call Verizon in the past few weeks but they've merged into one continuous ecstatic experience -- to a tech about my continuing internet problems.  He said they would be sending a team out but didn't say when before transferring me to the chap who would address my phone problems.
In this conversation, it occurred to me that the problem with outgoing calls might be that I had forgotten while the tech was here that I had my regular phone running off a splitter, along with the router, that was, supposedly, now devoted to the internet.  Not possible, says this latest phone tech: if that had been true, the phone would not have worked at all.  Color me surprised.
I was out for the afternoon and, missing my dear friends at VzTech, I called up to see what was going on.  As ever, my internet speed was sloppy.  I had moved my telephone to a different jack, to test out my speculation that this was related to my outgoing problem, and it was lucky that this worked, however inconveniently the phone must now be placed, because the internet went totally down for about 15 minutes during that conversation.  It was finally restored after two power-downs of the router.  It was during this call that I was first informed that house calls could be expected on Friday the 14th, the next day, between 8 in the morning and 9 in the evening.  It's certainly convenient that I have nothing better to do than devote 13 hours waiting for Verizon to come up with some new 'fix' which sees me through another few days.  Ditto about my car, which needs to be at the mechanic's shop tomorrow, but if I can wait 13 hours, surely it can, too.
This evening, I received a robotic call asking me to call a new number, 866 849 0001, which I did, in order to schedule a repair.  The person who answered knew nothing about me or my phone number.  So back to the 800 number, more waiting, and when I get through to the latest tech, I'm informed that the earliest they can now get someone out will be in five days.
In the process of all these contacts, I have been promised return calls four times.  I have received just one.  When this promise was made to me for the third time, I pointed out to the tech that I didn't have much confidence in this, considering that by this time I had not received two promised calls already.  She promised me that she would, girl scout's honor, be absolutely sure to call me back.  No one did.
I have tried to go 'up the food chain,' to talk to a supervisor but I'm sure you know how easy you make that.  (This is a kind of queue management where you throttle the responses so that customers stop entering the queue or eventually give up once in.)  I could wait for '20 minutes' or so to speak to a supervisor.  (You must have a lot of people trying to get up the food chain if you can't find a supervisor in less than 20 minutes.  How many stay in that queue?)  Despite the opportunity to listen to that same music and those same irrelevant helpful hints on how to solve my problems via your website, I really just didn't fancy wasting so much more time.  (By this time, I'd been on the phone, or trying to be on the phone, with Verizon for about two hours today.)  So I asked if I could please have a supervisor call me back.  Of course, the tech said, after some verbal arm-twisting.
I wish I could say I was disappointed that I have not gotten such a call but I barely expected it so disappointment can't be the right word.  (Update: this morning, the 14th, after requesting a supervisor yet again, a supervisor did call back.  He could do no better than five days from now either but at least it was a supervisor.  What I had hoped for was one person with a direct phone number whom I could contact and would stay with this until it was solved.  Of course, the only phone number is the one I now mumble fitfully in my sleep, 1-800-567-6789.  And their robot will once again ask me what my operating system is.)
I can tell you what is disappointing, though -- it's that I seem to be a captive to Verizon; there is no other DSL service that connects to my home.  I'd have changed ISPs in a heartbeat if I could.
So it seems you're destined to win this one.  You can outwait me; there will in the end come a time when I'll just have to accept the shoddy service because life must have some other activities than talking to, waiting to talk to, hoping forlornly that someone will call, or waiting for another house call.
I am considering moving to an ATT- or cable-serviced area.
Sincerely (wishing I could change my ISP)
[Name and phone number withheld for obvious reasons.)
P.S. Since your robot asks me if I wish to decline to have my calls recorded, which I do not, perhaps someone could spend the tens of hours to listen to all those calls, eh?  I'm sure you must have as much free time as you believe I do.  I'd skip the elevator music interludes, though.

Some days later now.
Good news and bad news, I guess.  After clearing my calendar for that Wednesday all-day appointment, I was informed by a robot on the telephone on Monday night that the appointment had been changed to Tuesday . . . so I cleared my calendar for Tuesday as well.  So it was a day earlier -- good news -- but I had now cleared my calendar for 24 to 36 hours, depending on how you count the time I slept.
This time, a whole team of technicians showed up, at least three of them.  At least one of them was here for over three hours, I reckon.  He/they left with the system running at the nominal rate, 2.90 Mbps.
This 'fix' lasted less than 24 hours.  By the next morning, Wednesday, my speed was down to .10 Mbps (about 40% of dialup speeds).  The stats at the gateway display showed 480Kbs downstream speed, rather than the slightly over 3.0 Mbps it shows when it's running in the manner I'm paying for.  Another house call for today, Friday, has been scheduled -- another 12 hours cleared from my calendar.
I called Verizon again.  I no longer bother with the first-responders who answer the phone but go up the food chain to a supervisor immediately.  Having talked to around ten of those, I went another level up and talked to a manager.  Not all that much relief, naturally, but I did get another round of 'we do apologize. . . .'  I have now received enough of those from Verizon to handle a lifetime of sinners.
I have asked first responders, supervisors, and the manager for one person who would stay on top of this and whom I could contact directly.  (I have talked to Verizon personnel for hours in the past few weeks.  I have waited tens of hours listening to the Muzak overhead.)  No luck.
For hours this morning, Friday, my speed has been between .03 to .22 Mbps.  I found a website with the emails and phone numbers of Verizon executives.   (http://consumerist.com/2007/02/23/14-verizon-executives-phone-numbers/) In this letter, I pleaded to have someone who would see that my issues were resolved and whom I could contact directly.  No response yet, but it's three hours later in New Jersey, where the executive I picked is listed as working.  Perhaps by Monday.
No doubt it's a coincidence, but less than ten minutes after sending that email, my speed bumped up to 1.54 Mbps, half of what I'm paying for.
It is now 2 in the afternoon, no sign of technicians.  But they have another six hours to go.   Suppose you had a washing machine under warrantee.  Suppose further there had been technicians to fix it when it failed.  How much confidence would you have in the fifth house call?
I don't imagine I'm the only one with troubles with Verizon.  We are like grains of sand on the road before a ten-ton truck: they won't even feel the speed bump.  We have few resources available to us.  You could try some PUC but they'll almost certainly side with the truck.
So here's my plan, for what it's worth: I will continue to call, continue to move up the food chain, continue to get house calls from technicians, continue to post this to wherever it seems appropriate, and bombard all the email addresses on that list.  I intend for this grain of sand to make some cost accountants' heads explode with what they're 'spending' on me.
One may, I think, be forgiven for wondering, if not suspecting, that these throttles are retaliatory.

  • Verizon still playing their "dishonest" games...be afraid, be VERY afraid!

Just another post to let everyone know Verizon is still playing their dishonest and underhanded games.  FYI I "had" two Verizon landlines one of which I am in the process of canceling & porting the number over to my Ooma Telo (www.ooma.com) from which Verizon is suppose to then close and terminate my account. Having performed my due diligence and realized how expensive Verizon is now compared to others,  I purchased and installed a Ooma Telo almost a month ago and had Ooma port the Verizon number over.  Paperwork, authorization and confirmation for porting  were emailed to me from Ooma leaving just for Verizon to complete their end.  It is now almost a month and as of this morning Verizon has yet to complete their part making me a captive audience to their outrageous pricing for another month.
For those who are concerned over some of the outrageous prices charged by Verizon bordering on piracy, lack of follow-up, and a oblivious lack of concern for their customers, you might want to consider using  VOIP phone providers such as www.ooma.com, www.phonepower.com, www.magicjack.com, etc.    I have tried to give Verizon every reason why I would want to stay as a phone subscriber however time and time again they have not been very responsive to any of my concerns or needs. If my Verizon phone number porting takes any longer I will have no recourse but to then initiate a email campaign to the regulatory agencies just so I can motivate Verizon to do what is expected for their subscribers...even though who are in the process of canceling their Verizon services.

Here are the states impacted by this very raw deal Verizon has sold us out to.
AZ, ID, IL, IN, MI, NV, NC (except Knotts Island), OH, OR, SC, Crows-Hermatite (VA), WA, WI, and the following communities in California that border AZ, NV and OR–Big River, Blythe, Coleville, Crescent City, Desert Center, Eagle Mountain, Earp, Felicity, Fort Dick, Gasquet, Klamath, Kneeland, Markleeville, Merced, Needles, Orick, Parker Dam, Ripley, Smith River, Topaz, Trinidad, Vidal and Winterhaven.
Customers no longer truly matter to Verizon unless your in a big metro area where they installed FiOS.  When will the states wakeup?  Verizon has consistently promised then broke the promises they made to rural Americans.  Our money helped to finance and pay for the FiOS  network that they so enjoy profitting from.  But do we get a chance to even see the fuit of our tarrifs, taxes and fees that help build it?  Nope, it's time the FCC stopped the nonsense with big corporate telecos such as Verizon.

  • Cannot send email from Verizon to a specific domain using the web UI

I'm trying to send an email to a specific address on a domain I own from a Verizon account using the web UI. Whenever I click send, a popup appears saying "Your e-mail contains the following invalid e-mail addresses:" followed by the email address. I can send email to this address from a GMail account as well as my work email.
In Chrome, I can see that a "code":1002 error is being produced.
Does anyone know why this would happen? Does Verizon check destination domains for reputation? Is there any way to debug this further?

  • Google Play on Tablet works on WIFI not Verizon network.

I have an Motorola Ellipsis Tablet. I am unable to use Google Player. When I open the app, I get "Background data disable. Google play store needs background data to be enabled." I hit enable and It asks me to choose either Facebook or Gmail. I choose my email account and it tries to sync and I get the message "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Everything works fine when I am on WIFI at home but when I get to work and I'm on the Verizon network it won't work. I can't use Pandora or look at video. Can someone help me figure out why it is not working on the Verizon network? Thanks.

        Hi Mollie88,
Oh my! Let's get you back to enjoying your device. Some applications depend upon background data (transferring data when not directly in use). Restricting background data may cause those apps to stop functioning unless a Wi-Fi connection is available. To uncheck Restrict background data in the Google Play application,  follow the directions in the link  http://vz.to/1f5KM7b .
    Thanks,

  • Using CRM_UI on Verizon Galaxy Tablet

    All,
We are currently working on a pilot to deploy Verizon's Galaxy S tablet to our outside sales force.  As part of this deployment, we wanted to be able to log on to CRM_UI using the tablet.  We have found that 80% of the functionality works, but we have found screen rendering issues and drop down list issues.
I wanted to know if 1) does any one know of a CRM_UI compatible browser that can be used on tablet type devices?  and 2) if the solution as described above will work without deploying the complete CRM Mobile solution?
    Regards,
    Jose

Personally I have not tried CRM via the browser on the iPad.  In terms of browser compatibility your best bet is probably EHP1 for SAP CRM where I think SAP finally updated CRM for better IE8 and firefox support.
In terms of browser support, until SAP provides better support for firefox and perhaps even adds chrome to the browser list for CRM, I dont' think we are going to have much support on tablets for CRM when not using the mobile solutions delivered via native applications.
It might be worth looking at the OSS NOte 1430376 for more information on EHP1 support.
I'm going to SAPPHIRE next week and this will be a good question for me to ask about general browser support for SAP CRM in the longterm.
    Take care,
    Stephen

  • How can I get Verizon to return my memory card- There screw up

After screaming about 1x a week with this new pre-paid SAMSUNG phone, I finally was able to get the store to take the phone and replace it.  Sadly, I was so frustrated with Verizon for my phone never working, and  getting the run around, that I was glad to get the "we will get you a new one".
Wasn't happy that they can't just give me a new one off the wall. (that would be 50 bucks please. (phone was 30 days old).
SO, The guy behind the counter advised me, I would get a new one.  Took battery, I asked if  things were backed up, and he said "yes", the backup synch was set up. "like OK".
So, removed battery and the lid, and the case I bought for it, took my old phone and said wait for new one. (came in today).
I didn't even think of getting my 8GB memory card from the old phone at the time I left the store.
This was 3 days ago (26th of Dec). Today, my new phone came in, it was not synching, not doing the backup right, and then I realized my memory card was not there.
Nicely called the help desk thinking I was calling the store where i returned the phone.  NOPE, got tech support in a different state after 14 minutes of listening to switch witch and running around with button pushing. Just to be told "contact the store diectly".
Headed to store, advised of what happened, and the cheerful guy with hte IPAD, typing your name, pretty much said " to bad".  It's goneft
No help. Just me trying to stay calm, after the head-aches with this phone.  And now I am out an 8GB memory card, that Verizon, in their haste, never took time to remove (but did the battery), and I forgot to remove it myself.
Now, I want Verizon to replace the memory card.  Their phone was bad, every week complained about this phone, and in 30 days, I now had to get it replaced.
I take error in not remembering to get it. BUT, figured the techs behind the scenes would have thought of this.
Anyone know of whom I can contact to ask VZN for a new card?  I lost some vital pics and info from my realtor, and have to bite that, but this wouldn't have  happened, if I could have gotten some satisfactory service, and I still ended up 3 days without a phone.

I admit, I did screw up for not checking. I was just soo steamed with the customer support and going back and forth with phone and offices in Charleston, SC and here in VA, I was just getting frustrated with this phone that i had for 1 week, and couple with the craziness of the hustle trafflc of customers during the holidays.
Just a lot of crazy here, but my new phone is in, I had to get the service center to  reset things, as the backup synch wasn't right, and I will get a new card.
I just wanted a new phone that worked, and oversaw the issues.  This isn't the first time I had to return a phone, but last time, it was a slower pace, and no issues, and I  reminded myself to get the card out.
Got 99% of my contacts. Just wishing there was somehow to track the phone, and have hope, but it was nothing that was life critical.. And cost of new cars is cheap.
Chalk up to "pay attention"....  but oh, the frustration of 6 visits to the stores in 32 days I had that phone.  Ahh!
Happy New Year, and thanks for the replies....

  • How long does it take for the warehouse to show a phone as recieved so I can pay my final bill?  I would like to sign up for Verizon again as I am very unsatisfied with my new company but cannot until this is resolved.

I recently switched to another competitor but would actually like to start from scratch with Verizon but cannot do so because they cannot locate my devices I mailed in to their warehouse.  I switched my whole family's accounts, 3 phones and 1 mobile hotspot, to a competitor to get a cheaper rate and unlimited data but I have not been happy with their service and would like to switch back.  The problem is when switching the first time I was told by a Verizon chat rep that I could send my Edge devices back in and would get credit for them and stop my edge payments which was not the way I know now it is supposed to work.  After a couple of phone calls a supervisor looked at my online chat transcript and realized that I was correct and the rep had told me incorrectly that they would take my edge phones back and give me credit for them and I could close my account by only paying the early termination fees.  She sent me two envelopes to send my two edge phones back in and said they would credit on my account and stop the monthly billing for them once they were received.  I called a couple of weeks ago after being charged 24.99 for the both of them again for the month after my account was stopped.  They said that they had not received my phones and I should have noted the tracking number from the labels the rep sent me so they could track them.  I tried to find the tracking numbers but couldn't so I got back on live chat and asked them to resend me the letter from the supervisor rep as well as resending the labels and he said they could that and it should be 7-10 business days.  It has now been over two weeks and I have not received the resent letter or labels so I cannot give them the tracking number to prove I sent my phones back to them.  I have also researched the facility I was asked to send these phones back to and it seems this is a pretty common Verizon trick of making you prove you sent the phones and not giving you any access to the tracking numbers.  I just want to pay my ETF's and close out my original account so I can start over fresh with Verizon but now I am losing faith in doing that as this is making me wonder if they are the type of company I want to deal with.  Please someone who may have dealt with this help me restore my faith in Verizon and give me an idea of what to do next.

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • Can I merge several different Verizon plans (different family members each have own plans) into one plan (i.e. can I take over all their lines), if all lines on all plans are on Edge?

I was originally told by Verizon that if I joined, I can eventually take over the lines of various family members.  Now that I've joined, and my family members all upgraded their phones and are on Edge, Verizon is telling us that we can't merge into one plan (because Edge lines can't be transferred to another account).
Is this true, and, if so, what is my recourse since I was lied to.

Well, yes and no (as far as being lied to).  I asked on several occasions (I have the chat transcripts to prove it) if there would be any issue if the lines were all already on Edge, and was told each time that under no circumstances would there be any issue.  The latest being today (I know it's after the fact, but I wanted proof that this is what the chat people are saying).  I asked "I have currently have an account with 3 phones on Edge.  My brother and his wife, and my parents, also have plans all on Edge.  I would like to 'take over' their lines.  I want to make sure there is no issue with the Edge plan and that I can simply 'take over' their lines with no problems."  I was told "Yes. That would be correct."  Again, this is what I was told in the past as well (my original post didn't make clear the timing of the chats and upgrades to Edge..).  Every time I chatted I mentioned that the accounts were going to be on Edge or (later on) were already on Edge.  Even before my family members upgraded to Edge, not one single chat or phone representative (and my brother asked the same thing in a store) mentioned NOT to upgrade to Edge because it couldn't be transferred.  Everyone just said yep, no problem.  The ONLY reason I even joined Verizon (I was on Straight Talk) was because of the More Everything and Edge plans (we wanted a family plan with 6 people and over 10GB so we'd each save $25/line).  Otherwise I never would have joined Verizon and my family wouldn't have upgraded either.

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • How can I use Messages app on non-Verizon phone?

Hi. I have two phones: A VZW personal phone and a T-Mobile phone from my employer. I wish to carry only one device when I'm at work (my T-Mobile work phone) but I wish to be able to get texts from my personal VZW number on that phone. I know I can't forward texts, so I installed the Verizon Messages Android app on my work phone, but I can't set it up with my VZW number (I figured it should work because I was able set it up on my tablet at home and it works fine there).
After I install the app on the non-Verizon phone, I open it and I get a screen asking me if I want to use the app for my default messaging app. If I click no, the app closes without giving me a chance to set it up with my personal account like it did when I installed it on my tablet.
I also noticed after I installed it, it's called Messages+ instead of Messages. Are they the same thing?

Hi, has this been resolved? I am in a very similar situation and need the app to work on my new Sprint LG G3 exactly the way it operated on my Sprint iPhone 5S. Here is how it worked on my Sprint iPhone: downloaded the VZ Messages app, followed the prompts to tie it into my work Verizon Galaxy S5 number, and started to receive texts sent to my S5 on my iPhone but in the separate VZ Messages app and not in the native iPhone messages app.
But when I install the VZ Messages app on my Sprint LG G3, it only asks if I want to "Change default message app? Use Message+ instead of Messaging as your default message application?" That is not what I want so I tap "Cancel" and the app closes. I am not prompted with the opportunity to tie it to my Verizon S5 number like I was on the iPhone. The ability to have the VZ Messages app on my Sprint LG G3 along side the native G3 messaging app, the exact same way it worked on my Sprint iPhone, is very important and the whole reason I switched from AT&T to Verizon for my work phone.

  • Is there any way to contact verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?

Is there any way to contact Verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?  I prefer e-mail so as to provide details (like I am trying to provide here).  I have tried in-store personnel (no help at all) and the web chat - they just want to see me more data instead of helping me with my basic problem!
I CAN NOT GET ANYONE FROM VERIZON TO GIVE ME ANY HELP NOR CAN I FIND A WAY TO FILE A COMPLAINT.  AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT TO DROP MY VERIZON ACCOUNT BUT I'M SURE THAT IT WILL COST ME A SMALL FORTUNE TO GET OUT OF IT.
    Here is my issue:
Chat transcript removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service
BELOW IS A SCREEN COPY FROM REDDIT ABOUT SOMEONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A VERIZON CELL PHONE
So last night my RAZR MAXX HD did something totally bewildering by spontaneously downloading 2.6 GB of data over the course of ~ 3 hours. Fortunately I was able to catch this problem before it ended up being really expensive, but I still exceeded my 2 GB data plan by 600MB.
    The Culprits:
Reddit News Free: 160 MB foreground / 0.96 GB background
Android OS: 0 MB foreground / 1.18 GB background
Several unnamed applications: ~ 350 MB
    Screenshots:
    The massive data spike
    Android OS data usage
    Reddit News Free data usage
    Weird unnamed processes
    Detailed timeline:
5:12 PM: Incident begins according to VZW data usage website (2.60410 GB used). This is around the last time that I used my phone at the laundromat before getting dinner and watching Game of Thrones.
8:04 PM: 50% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:31 PM: 75% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:58 PM: 90% of data allowance used (txt msg)
9:13 PM: 100% of data allowance used (txt msg)
10:05 PM: Got the text messages and immediately put the phone into airplane mode
    10:30 PM: Took screenshots
10:45 PM: Enabled wifi, installed Kaspersky premium. Scan returned no threats.
11:00 PM: Left phone in airplane mode, went to sleep.
    The questions:
What was the root cause of this issue? Did Reddit News freak out as a result of an esoteric bug or was my phone hacked?
If this was a simple Reddit News bug, then why was the Android OS also trying to use such a massive amount of background data?
What the hell are these unnamed numeric applications? I've inspected my process history and this is the first time they have ever attempted to use data.
I'm pretty sure that I can explain this situation to Verizon and get out of having to pay additional data usage fees, but I would like to know more about the problem before I get in touch with them.

All I can think is your phone may have background downloaded an OTA update, and you'd then be prompted with something like, "As update to your Android system has been downloaded, would you like to install it now?"
I do find it very odd that the update would be 2.6GB. As a rough base, the CyanogenMod 10.1 firmware for your device is well under 200MB, so unless Verizon has a ****-ton of bloatware in the update, or it had to attempt to download multiple times for some reason, it may be a stretch.
But doing a little homework, it looks like the Verizon Razr Maxx was updated to 4.1 in late March. Maybe they're still rolling it out in waves? Have you gotten the update yet?
Edit: Aaaand I just noticed you appear to be running an AOSP-based ROM, which totally rules out a carrier update being sent out.
Edit2: If you want to live dangerously, you could try running:
    #kill -9 12289
That 12289 is the PID listed in your screenshot. But don't run that without fulling understanding the kill command.
The ps command could also be of use, but probably not.

I can confirm that the phone is currently at 4.1.2 and that I wasn't prompted for an OTA update. The fact that both the Android OS and Reddit News processes were simultaneously using an extremely large amount of data is unlikely to be a coincidence...

That is very curious that the spikes happened at the same time.I'm curious. It may have put at least some of that 2.6GB somewhere. You could use a data visualizer tool to see if you can find it, which may lead to more clues.

    The largest directories are:
DCIM: Normal looking photos (90,825 KB)
Android: Primarily map cache data (64,846 KB)
If it was downloading content then it did not significantly save content to storage. It's not like I have anything particularly sensitive on the phone, but the idea that it was uploading a snapshot of my data definitely makes me uncomfortable.

Yup, Digital Camera IMages and videos.Somewhere in /sdcard/Android would be my guess as to where a mysterious file would be downloaded, but if it's only 64MB, and mostly map data, I'd safely rule it out.I'm sorry, but I'm stumped here.Edit: I should mention I don't think this is malware, because unless a malicious app gained superuser access, any data it used would show under it's own apk in the data usage list, not Android OS.

Although I'm not really up to speed with the Android platform, I come from a UNIX background so I feel comfortable running commands. How do I pull up a bash terminal? Do I need to root the phone first?

There's a number of terminal emulators in the Play Store that work well. You don't need a rooted phone to get to the shell as your user, but any privileged command won't execute unless you can grant it permission from the Superuser app that is installed when you root the device. So you could probably do a ps -e, but not a kill -9.

Got it. I downloaded a terminal emulator but unfortunately those processes no longer exist.Does Android keep a generic log of system level events like /var/log/syslog?

I don't think so, and I know you'd need superuser permission to read most of the files in /var/log anyway. I'm not super familiar with how Android does its logging, but I do know that the two files of interest are the logcat and dmesg.

Want to mention here that using your settings to set your data cap (set it on your billing day), then you won't go over again. Those text messages are really unhelpful, as they send out well after the data has been used. Chances are good you hit close to the 2GB mark before you received the bulk of the messages.

That's definitely not the case here; both my PC and and Android phone are free from pirated apps.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • How do I use a Verizon PC Wireless card with my iMAC Intel Core desktop?

Help! Bought a Kyocera KPC650 Wireless PC Card for Verizon wireless internet. Works fine w/ laptop because it has a slot. How do I configure my iMAC desktop to accept this card? Is there an external USB adapter? Or do I have to get one installed internally? Which adapter works with OX 10.4?
I've seen the Quatech U132 online. Will that work? Its $192!! As is the Sewell adapter too. ($209)
Any ideas? I want to get off SBCYahoo DSL and their router because our DSL line is damaged in our complex and no one is fixing it!
    Thanks in advance.

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.

  • Move Verizon E-mail address from one account to another

I am wondering if it is possible to move an email address from one account to another. I am the primary account holder for a couple of email addresses - one of which is my mother-in-law. I am discontinuing my Verizon account but she has since started a Verizon FIOS account at her house. I'd like to move her email address to her account so the switch for her is painless (or as painless as possible). Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Yes and No. As of right now they will not move email address unless the name on both accounts match exactly.

  • If I wanted to exchange my iPhone 5 for the new iPhone 6 (no additional cost after $199 gift card from selling iPhone 5) do I have to pre-order online or do I just have to show up at a Verizon store Sept 19th?

If I wanted to exchange my iPhone 5 for the new iPhone 6 (no additional cost after $199 gift card from selling iPhone 5) can I pre-order online now or do I just have to show up at a Verizon store Sept 19th?

scodaddy, that is a wonderful question. We are super excited about the new iPhone. You can always pre-order your new iPhone online and then start the mail in rebate by following this link: http://bit.ly/GGnDDC Or you can always go into the store location and do it all in store on the 19th when the phone is launched. That would depend on if the store has them in stock when you go in. I hope that this was able to address your concern.

  • Is Verizon going to acknowlege the problems with FIOS and Windows Vista

For months now, I have been reading the numerous problems Fios internet customers are having with Fios internet/Actiontech Router and Windows Vista and there has been no acknowledgement by Verizon of this current major issue.
I have also experienced the exact same issue for months now since I switched to Verizon FIOS internet. Previously I had Comcast HSI using my Windows Vista laptop.  I had their service for over a year and I NEVER has a problem with the Windows Vista globe icon disappearing and loosing internet connection. The Globe always stayed on and never went away and I never lost connection when I had Comcast
I had Verizon FIOS installed last September with my Windows Vista computer and my wireless internet connection started to drop from day 1 and it has been a daily occurrence for over 5 months now.  It has gotten so bad, I have had to hardwire my laptop to to be able to use the internet uninterrupted.
This is what daily scenario is:
When I turn on my laptop(with Windows Vista, I can initially get full internet access(with the globe on and it says "Local and internet). After about 10 minutes or less, the globe switches to "local only" and I can still get  internet access.  After another 5 or so minutes, a large X covers the globe and I lose internet connection entirely. The actiontech router wireless signal is no longer listed as one of the wireless networks.  The only way for me to regain internet access is either to restart my laptop or reboot the actiontech router.
Numeorus posts here, over by DSL forums(Broadband Reports),Microsoft's website and a few othere websites detail this issue.
I am extremely shocked and surprised that Verizon has not tried to fix this issue by working with both the makers of the Actiontech Router as well as Microsoft to find out what the problem is and how to fix it.
I would just like to reiterate I strongly believe this is primarily a FIOS internet issue since I previously had Comcast HSI for over a year with the same Windows Vista laptop and I NEVER had that problem. Also,  I can connect to my neighbors wireless connection(she uses Comcast HSI) and when I do, the globe stay on all the time on my computer and the internet does not lose connection.
I know that there are a couple of Verizon employees here. Please tell the higher ups who handle FIOS internet that this is a major issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
P.S: Please don't tell me to go by my own router because then, I will have to deal with the issues of setting it up to work with Fios TV and the related VOD, widgets, remote DVR compatability issues to deal with. I don't think I can deal with the additional headaches.

FIOS is short for fiber optics.  fiber optics is different technology than DSL.
With that said, if you search the Microsoft databases for vista issues with fiber optics, (CURRENTLY THERE IS ONLY ONE PROVIDER OF FIBER TO THE HOUSE, that being Verizon, so yes you can also search Vista issues with verizon and\or fios) and you will find that Microsoft already acknowledges this issue with their software.  AND they offer you a fix.
