A few protools to logic questions.

Hello.
long time protools user and returning logic user (version 3.x was the last interaction)
am really enjoying the sequencing aspects to logic but am becoming increasingly frustrated by what seems to be a few really simple features but constantly used features of protools.
hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
they all have to do with audio editing.
1) selection snapping to timeline. i have found the marquee tool, but how do then snap the playhead to where i want to place the copied selection?
2) duplicating a region on the time line creates a second instance of the region, however its the same instance.. thus any editing will occur to all regions. is there was a way to default this to automatically create new regions (as in protools, well in protools it creates a new region once edited).
3) another question on snapping.. in the main timeline you can select snap to bar.. but is there way to snap to smaller transients than a whole bar? i know you can set that in piano roll.. but what about for either the sample editor or the main timeline?
these are all key features which are used constantly in protools.. and before i get a barrage of responses, i know logic isnt protools.. but some of these features i have mentioned are present across most if not all audio editing applications (cubase, live and even fruity loops)
i would really like to cross back to logic, but i need to be able to perform the same basic tasks..
help me obiwan..
tom

Not sure about question 1, mainly because I have always just manually moved regions where I wanted them. But because of the answer to question #3, it's never been an issue for me.
If you click and hold on the "Snap" menu (upper right hand corner of the Arrange page), you'll see a drop down list of options, which include, bar, beat, division, ticks, frames, etc... this helps limit where the region will land while dragging. I personally leave it set to "smart", which, depending on zoom level, allows me to place regions exactly where I want, very quickly.
My "nudge" key commands also help in certain circumstances.
As far as duplicating a region, yes, you are merely copying the region, but it's still referencing the same audio file, so any edits done on one will affect all copies.
After option/dragging a region, if you want to edit it, and ONLY that particular copy, simply go under the audio menu, and select "Convert Regions to New Audio Files". This can be assigned a key command, so it can be a pretty instantaneous thing. Now it's a separate audio file, and any edits done to it won't happen on the original.
Hope some of that helps...

  • A few simple Logic questions...please help.

I have a few probably simple Logic questions, that are nonetheless frustrating me, wondering if someone could help me out.
    1. I run Logic 8, all of the sounds that came with logic seem to work except organ sounds. I can't trigger any organ sounds (MIDI) on Logic, they won't play. I have a Yamaha Motif as my midi controller.
    Any idea why?
    2. I've starting running into a situation where I will record a MIDI track, the notes are recorded but they won't playback. The only track effected is the one that was just recorded. All other midi tracks playback.
I have to cut the track, usually go out of Logic and back in, re record for it to playback properly. Any idea why this may be happening?
    3. How important is it to update to Logic 9. Are there any disadvantages down the road if I don't upgrade. If I purchase the $200 upgrade, do I get a package of discs and material, or it just a web download.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • A few simple (?) dimension questions...

Hi, I have a few really simple dimension questions that I just can't figure out in OWB (which I'm just now starting to play with):
    1) I'm trying to create a dimension that has no levels or any hierarchy. In the BI tool, I just want this dimension to act as a "pick list" for one of 8 values (DW data snapshot dates for the last 8 weeks...) Users won't summarize by this dimension, or ever have more than 1 week selected at a time. How can I set this type of dimension up?
    2) Somewhat related to #1 - just to get something working, I set up a "time in weeks" dimension not as a time dimension, just as a normal user dimension. I then added a single "weeks" level with a surrogate key (using "key" instead of "id"), short desc (as the business key), and long description. Set up a mapping from my source table, everything worked fine. The strange thing I've notcied is that the relational table produced has both a "week_key" column and a "dimension_key" column. How can I get rid of the "dimension_key" column - its just an exact duplicate of the lowest level key column? Note - we will have a dimension table with over 1.3 BILLION rows in our warehouse - so duplicating this column does add a significant amount of overhead - this isn't just an academic problem.
    3) related to building this "test" dimension - my source table has 8 records in it. Whenever I run the ETL to populate the dimension table, the surrogate keys end up being key values 9 - 16 instead of 1 - 8. Note this is even if I reset the sequence number to 1 before I start, etc. My understanding is that Oracle uses a variable width number field when storing data - so having this dimension with values 1-8 instead of 9-16 saves approx a byte for every fact table record (which we're predicting will be in the range of 20 - 50 BILLION rows). How can I force the dimension to start numbering at 1?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

    Hi
Reg #2, I do not think we can get rid of the "dimension key". It looks like OWB is creating this column as a default Primary Key and hence is not possible to remove this. May be if we build the base Table for dimension as a normal relational table, which will allow us to define our own keys, and then build the "Dimension" using AWM on this relation table may resolve the issue of having duplicate primary keys. Its only a thougt, have not tested though.

  • How to open a multitrack project recorded in Protools in Logic 9

    Howdy folks -
My band just recently recorded a multitrack project in Protools 10 that we'd like to import or open in Logic 9 for overdubs and the final mix and master. I haven't a clue how to do this. I've heard Protools will export or save to .omf which can then be opened in Logic. Or alternatively the Protools can render the tracks as audio files which can then be opened/imported to Logic. But how exactly does one go about this?
    All the best,
    Frank

Apologies for the late response. Thanks for your assistance. The OMF method worked. However, there were a couple of unanticipated issues.
Have used it on two songs so far.
    1) on both songs each audio file was cut off before the end of the song
    2) on the second song the audio files appeared 2 plus hours into the project!
It took a while but I discovered in the Sample Viewer that the end point of each audio file was set about a minute short of the actual end. Issue solved by dragging the end point to the actual end. Performed this on each file.
Second issue was more difficult because upon opening the .omf the tracks appeared but not the audio files. Opened the file a few times before noticing that the project time said two hours plus. After scrolling all the way to the end I saw the files and drug them to the beginning of the project. Again had to go into sample viewer to adjust the end point of each audio file. Fortunatley there were just 8 audio files per song and this wasn't some 96 track film score :-)
Whether this is a Pro Tools issue or a Logic issue is unclear. I described the issue to my producing partner as he created the omf files and he had no idea.
    Anyone else experience this?

  • A Few Little Time Machine Questions

I just got a 1TB External Drive from Western Digital (My Book Studio Edition.) I just used Time Machine on my Mac Book Pro and now all my files are backed up. But I have a few questions:
    1. Does this mean that I don't have to manually drop and drag files into the External Drive?
    2. Does this mean I can delete files off of my computer and retrieve them later from my External Drive? (If this seems like a dumb question, it's rooted in my misunderstanding of Time Machine - I'm not sure if it temporarily backs things up, backs things up only when you command it to, or backs things up permanently.)
    Thank you!

    crimson_ghost,
Your questions appear to be answered, but I'll chime in too with some (perhaps) additional information...
Time Machine is mainly a backup and recovery tool. It makes a comprehensive backup of your entire installation, including all installed applications and all user data. The intention is that you will be able to completely recover from any potential disaster, such as a total failure of your internal hard drive.
Each backup that Time Machine makes is a complete "snapshot" of your installation at the time of the backup, complete with each and every file on your computer. Time Machine is able to make this "complete" backup each time it runs- without consuming much, if any, additional disk space on the backup drive- by using an advanced file system feature called "multi-linked files." In this scheme, the data for a given file is only copied once to the backup drive, but multiple "hard links" that point to that data can be created. In effect, it is like having multiple phone numbers, all of which ring to the same phone. Each backup will contain one of these "hard links" that points to the data associated with a given file that has not changed since the last backup. If the file is new or has changed, the new data is copied to the backup, and a new string of hard links will be created. Since each additional hard link consumes almost zero space, many, many backups can be made without using much disk space.
An additional benefit of this Time Machine scheme is that we are able to "go back in time" to retrieve a file that may have been deleted from the "source," and there is a truly innovative interface for doing so. Some of the OS X and iLife applications even have "Time Machine awareness" built in, and the interface can be accessed from within those apps. Pretty cool.
However, this does not mean that Time Machine can be used as an "archive" tool. It can not be used in this manner, and you should not depend on using it this way! Especially if Time Machine is used in its "default" mode, where backups are made every hour, part of its routine is to regularly "thin" the backups. This process involves the removal of old backups that do not conform to the "one backup a day for the past week," "one backup a week until disk is full" rule. At some point, Time Machine will also begin to "expire" the very oldest backups, then remove them to make room for new ones. If you attempt to use Time Machine for "archival" storage of files that have been removed from the source (your installation), you will ultimately lose them.
Now, given the way Time Machine works, it will eventually consume all- or close to all- of the disk space given to it. So it makes sense to limit what we allow it to use. How much is appropriate, and how do we limit what it can use? That's easy enough to answer...
Time Machine needs at least twice the amount of space necessary for the initial backup. I say "at least," because it will work best when given closer to 3 times the amount of space needed. If your installation of OS X, including all your user data and applications, amounts to 100 GBs for example, you'll need to give Time Machine at least 200 GBs, and my recommendation would be more like 300 GBs. If you do not give it at least this much space, your backups will eventually fail. Time Machine first makes a new backup when it runs, and then goes about checking to see what can be deleted from the older backups. Because of this, it must always have plenty of "headroom."
Giving Time Machine more than the stated "3X" figure, though, is wasteful of precious disk space that could be used in more beneficial ways. For instance, by using that disk space for "archival" purposes
In order to limit what we give to Time Machine, it is necessary to partition the external drive. Multiple logical volumes can be created, and we can size these volumes to meet the needs of Time Machine. For various reasons (I could explain, if needed), I always recommend that the first partition be used for Time machine backups. If you do not know how to use Disk Utility to partition your external drive, just ask.

  • Few Hyperion Web Analysis questions

    Hi All,
    We are using Web Analysis 11.1.2 and i am a newbie to it. I have few questions regarding reports which may be of very basic level;
Q1. If we right click on a report then we have an option of "Edit data" through which we can enter data directly into planning. My question is that how can i disable this option for all users as i don't want them to manipulate any data through a report?
Q2. As we have made a report in which we have used the dimension members that are used in Hyperion planning. The name of member in Hyperion planning for example is ABC and i want to change the name to XYZ in Hyperion Web analysis report. How is that possible?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

Q1 depends on the level of provisioning and or useraccess permissions on essbase/olap level.
Use Shared Services in combination with EAConsole to restrict this.
Q@. In plain/ native essbase you can add aliases to the member. Normally you do not edit planning members in essbase (since you have to change them in planning it self) But perhaps you can. You can give it a try in a testenvironment.

  • A few Video Out related questions (yes I searched)

Hello there! I've been searching the net and these forums for awhile now and didn't find answers to these specific questions. Any help would be appreciated.
    Question 1:
I (now) know that the iPod Classic is extremely picky in regard to getting video signals to the TV. I know that Apple requires that I purchase its cords and/or its Apple Universal Dock (not to be mistaken with the iPod Universal Dock, which is discontinued) in order to enable output to my TV. However, I have read in a few other places that the iPod Universal Dock will work with the iPod Classic. Is this true? If I plug my iPod Classic into the iPod Universal Dock will I be able to use a non-Apple cord that connects from the headphone jack in the dock to AV cables (Yellow and White) on the TV? Also, will the S-Video on the iPod Universal Dock work with my iPod Classic? I really don't feel like going out and spending another $100 on the new Apple dock and cords.
    Question 2:
In regard to the iPod Universal Dock, I have noticed that there are three part numbers: MA045G/A, MA045G/B, and MA045G/C. Is there any significant difference between these? Will all (or none) of them work with my iPod Classic?
Any other tips on how to get around having to spend another $100?
    Any help is great. Thanks!

The info provided by the link <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300233> is incompatible with users' answers posted above.
I am getting ready to try a 3rd-party S-Video to composite cable to play video from my new 80G iPod classic via an older Universal Dock (w/S-Video out) to a TV system. Will report back on results.

  • A Few Bootcamp Vista Installation Questions

    Hello, Apple forums,
I am will be, hopefully within the next week, installing my new Vista Ultimate on my 15 inch aluminum MBP. I would like, if it is not a problem, a few questions answered before I proceed.
    1. Is using Bootcamp the best way to install Windows? I know there are other options, and I have heard people have had technical problems with Bootcamp.
    2. When I install Windows, is my MBP still under warranty?
    3. When I install Windows, will it, in any way, affect my usage of OS 10?
    4. Will I be able to install programs, such as Word, Norton, etc. onto Windows?
    5. Will all of the physical functions, such as the Trackpad, iSight, and DVD port still function?
    6. How do I switch between OS's, or for that manner, can I do it without restarting the MBP?
Thanks you for taking the time to answer. I am pretty sure I know the correct answers to most of these questions, but I just want to make sure.

    Hi Mechafire,
back from work (for which I had to leave this morning...
    3. When partitioning the harddisk for BootCamp Windows the space for the Windows partition is taken from the OSX partition, thus decreasing the size of it.
Usually this poses no problem for OSX, but OSX can become erratic when the amount of free space on its partition drops below 10% of the partition size.
That's what I meant with 'problem'
    4. Personally I haven't had any problem with installing programs on BootCamp Windows.
However there seems to be some very specific programs (usually protected with hardware-dongles) that do not run perfectly.
In the past AutoCAD was such one, but I'm not sure if this is still so.
    5. As said, I don't have a MBP so I don't have first-hand experiences with it.
When you look around the BootCamp Forum you will find some posts which mentions problems with the trackpad in Windows.
    7. I use BootCamp as well as Parallels with Windows on my Mac and I can say that I never had any problem with them.
BootCamp is the way to go when you know you don't need OSX at the time, while Parallels (and the VM apps) are quite handy when you are in OSX and just want/need to run a Windows program since you don't have to reboot the Mac.
    8. Right now Windows 7 is not supported by BootCamp and also is still in Beta.
At the time of release of Windows 7 there will be most likely a BootCamp update that supports Windows 7.
Nonetheless there are some people round here that are using the Public Beta of Windows 7 on their Macs right now with the Vista Drivers that are on the OSX Leopard DVD.
Personally I would say wait for Windows 7 if you can , otherwise Vista is the next best choice.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • A few short SD blocking questions...

    Hi all,
i got a few questions which the most of you probably can answer rather easily:
    1. Is it possible in SD (5.0) to register that a customer has to be blocked on a future date?
    2. Is it possible in SD to block a customer only for ordering (read: not allowing for new orders, thus new open credits) and not for all other functions (so that the customer still is available for corrections like credit memos, etc.)?
    3. Is it possible to block vendors in batch (mass block)?
Two more questions which are less important:
    4. My client doesnt do any archiving. The consequence of this is that there exist many customers in the system that are inactive. Is there a way to hide these customers (same for vendors) without deleting them or archiving them? Maybe i can give these customers the status "inactive"?
    5. Is it possible to give comment to all the changes that are in the customer master records so that an employee always can find back why certain customer information is modified?
I really hope you guys can help me out in these question!
    Cheers,
    Wander

    Hi Wander,
    1. Changes to customer data are not time or date dependent. So it is not now possible to block customers on a future date.
    2. See transaction XD02 go to Extras -> Blocking data (or alternatively use transaction VD05) The blocking type determines what the customer is and is not allowed to do.
    3. Transaction MASS would spring to mind. field to change depends on the blocking type you want to set.
    4. I know you can mark a customer for deletion. I don't know what this does to the standard search helps.
    5. I guess a text field could help for this. But to my knowledge there is no standard solution for this.
    regards,
    Pim

  • I have a few trivial Labview Control questions

    1.
I'm trying to customize the look of a boolean switch control with the CTL Editor, but I cannot seem to "Import picture" with transparent color information. the original switch has transparent colors, but the clipboard either doesnt store the transparency, or Labview only recognizes one particular color as transparent. How do I do this? (actually trying to make a circuit-diagram-looking switch, if one exists, I wont need to do the above)
    2.
I have a "vertical pointer slide" with 7 pointers, and I'm using "fill to value below" with different colors between each slide. Whenever sliders are at the same value, the fill color of an incorrect slider shows, rather than the slider immediately following. How do I
    fix this behavior?

-For question number 2, I would try to play around with property nodes of a slider control such as ACtive Sliders, Fill Color and the array of references DigitalDisplay[] and develop some logic between the filling colors and the values of each sliders.

  • A few basic iPhoto 11 questions

I just updated my iMac from Tiger (I know...) to Mavericks and it's great, but there's a few things in iPhoto that are way different from my old version- wondering if I can re-apply these.
    1) I used to be able to label photos by hovering over the photo and a dialogue box would appear, then once I titled it the title would stay under the photo. I can title photos now by going to info and titling it but when I'm in album view I can't see the titles whereas I used to.  I looked in preferences and everything but can't change it, is there a way to do this?
    2) This one is basic and stupid- in my old version just 1 click would enlarge the photo from album view vs highlighting it and needing to double click to enlarge.  Any way to revert this back to the old way?
I know these are really stupid questions but it's just conveniences I got used to that would be nice to have back.

    1. View Menu -> Select 'Titles'
    2. Tap the Space Bar.

  • WLC to use Management Interface & Few more getting started Questions

    Hello,
I'm yet to implement the Wireless LAN in one of our client's corporate office. There 40 x 1130AG LWAPP AP's and 4404 WLC with ACS 4.x for the Authentication of the Wireless Clients who is trying to access the LAN.
For the WLC to connect to the Dual Core Switch, i need to use only one Management Interface with Distribution System port 1 being the Primary and mapping the DS Port 2 as the Backup port for the Management Interface. Is this Right? or do i have configure Dynamic Interfaces as well. Is management interface for accessing / management and configuration only? Management Interface will communicate with ACS for AAA and AP's who would like to associate with the WLC, is this Right?
Note: WLC, AP's, Wireless Clients & AP's are in the same IP Subnet.
Few other question of WLAN's so it helps me during implementation -
    • Can I use the 802.1x Authentication application found in the Windows XP for the Wireless Interface; instead of Cisco Client Application. For this; I have to configure the WLC / Wireless Client to use EAP algorithm; is this Right?
    • With the help of RRM, the channel interference between multiple AP's (3 - 4 AP's) in the same area is controlled by the WLC by changing the Channels used by the AP which is not same on all the AP's. Is this right?
    • How many Client Users will connect per Channels. 802.11 a / g will provide 11 Channels, is this Right?.
    • I'm trying to set in the WLC to limit the Client connections per AP to 25, can this be achieved?
Please, can anyone help me in calrifying the above points.
    Regards,
    Keshava Raju

Many Thanks Mr. Dennis for your help & Clarification.
With ref to your reply point no# 1. I have actually planned to connect one Gig port of the controller to each of the Dual Cisco Core Switch setup. Can i use all 4 Controller Interfaces configured as LAG and Port 1 & 2 connecting to Core Switch 01 and Port 3 & 4 connecting to Core Switch 02?
I have Final two more questions, Request you to help me calrifying this?
    • I'm willing to configure Multicast communication between the WLC & AP's. For this configuration is it necessary to Connect the WLC in a different VLAN than the VLAN of the AP's. Is it necessary that I have to set the controller to LWAPP Layer 3 mode to support the Multicast communication?
    • Though I do not have implementation experience of the WLAN. My understanding of the Interface settings on the WLC - is I will have to configure one Management Interface for in-band management. Do I have to configure AP-Manager Interface (to support Multicast communication) and to make the WLC to communicate with ACS for Client Authentication. All of the Wireless Devices including the ACS are in one VLAN / IP Subnet, is only one Management Interface is enough for communicating with AP's (with Multicast) and communicating with ACS for forwarding the Authentication messages between the ACS & Wireless Clients?

  • A few wide and varied questions about Linux in general

I've had a few "I wonder..." things noodling in the back of my head for a while now about the Linux kernel, and how Linux works in general. Yes, I could just install LFS to answer them, but I like knowing what I'm doing before I do it and asking is typically an awesome way to do that
So, here are a bunch of questions. Answer what you know, speculate on what you think. Feel free to answer just one or all of them.
Also, if you feel inspired from these questions or just this thread's very existance and want to ask questions of your own please do!
    Compilation questions
When I compiled Openbox recently, it linked such that I can't move it out of my home folder, and additionally, when I run /usr/bin/openbox, I end up executing /Users/dav7/openbox/openbox-3.4.7.2/openbox/.libs/lt-openbox - why is this, and how can I make openbox... not do the weirdness it's currently doing?
    Library questions
    - In Arch's initramfs image, klibc is named "klibc-EcjIkSXUojTZn3VHC4IxoFgq9Kg.so", at least it was at my last check. Why is this? Why/how do other programs link with this crazily named copy of klibc? How does library linking work actually? How did the linker know to use this klibc name and not something else?
    - How do I specify that I want to link against a specific library, for example if I want to link a program against klibc when I have glibc installed? Do I have to create a chroot jail to convince the linker to see only the library I want it to?
    - Can I build the Kdrive X server with klibc, or do I need ulibc or glibc? How much (read: what "class" or category of programs) will klibc link against without problems, especially in the X area? Will I need ulibc to build anything X-based?

Er, I'm pretty sure I'm not an expert, so my "answers" will be almost surely incomplete/incorrect.
    1) I suppose by "compiling openbox" you mean the standard "./configure; make; make install" procedure. Well, the "./configure" step lets you choose various paths related to the final product. Crunch through "./configure --help". "./configure" script creates/modifies all the makefiles, so that they reflect your choices of paths, and that's what's going to be used.
    2) - dynamic linking is manages by /sbin/ldconfig - so have a look at 'man ldconfig'. that's how linker knows what's available.
    - with klibc, I think you need to have the whole toolchain (binutils, gcc, klibc) adapted to klibc available to compile against klibc. Then it's a matter of compiling with those tools. I think it's impossible to use the standard gcc and binutils to compile against klibc.
    - I have no idea about what compiles against klibc. I think not too much, and with heavy patching. I'm pretty sure you can compile some version of x server against uclibc (that's what openwrt does). Have a look at some small distros (slitaz, dsl) on how are they doing it.

  • Can't run neither Protools or Logic on my new intel mac!

Hi. I am really starting to get frustrated about this!!! I recently bought a Macbook Pro to run Logic Pro 7.2.2 on using a digi002 rack interface. Everything seem to be working out right according to all settings both in audio/midi setup in mac-utlities, Logic and Protools. The problem is that I can't even run more than 8-9 audio tracks before cpu starts complaining! I really don't get it! I have updated to all the newest driver versions and my computer seems to find the digi002 with troubles at all..When I run Logic the same error always occurs: conlfict between Logic and external device! Midi and audio can't syncronize! I have also tried with another firewire cable to check on cableconnection between computer and interface, but it is still the same! I'm about to throw this piece of s... out my window! I didn't have any of these problems the G5 I had before! Other people I have talked with havn't had any problems with their macbook pro and running Logic so far...

Something isn't right in the DIgi kitchen. This comment has come up several times this week, mainly from Mbox owners, but also 002 users. I can't remember what version of Logic other people are using who are having problems, but I wonder if it's something with version 7.2.2 - the latest release. Have you got an older version you can go back to and see if that clears it? If you can get back to 7.2.1 have a go and let us know how you get on, it could answer a lot of problems for people out there in your situation.

  • Save me from going back to Protools!  Logic Express 8.0 will not install :(

    Hello fellow Mac users ...
I have been using PT LE for a bit and wanted to try out logic so got express 8 (highest that will work on G5) and have been trying to install that sucker for the last few weeks. Thought it was a bad disc, Apple sent me a new one etc... I have done a disc reformat even zeroing it out to clear everything! What happens is the install gets to Ultrabeat portion of install and gets to about 50-70% then states installation fails! What possible issues could there be if there is no other software etc. to conflict with etc. Perspiring and definitely not inspiring Hopefully someone has had this issue or may have some ideas ... Peace and thank you! John

Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have done since my last post.
Ran the HD utility, verified and repaired permissions, reloaded OSX, got different Express Discs from Apple, created an image file and tried to load it that way ... STILL FAILS!. Any other application loads such as PT or Superior Drummer but Logic will not. Maybe my G5 has some hardware issue or some higher force doesn't want me to use Logic. Other suggestions are appreciated but I am pretty mentally drained at this point and may just live with PT until I someday upgrade to an Intel Mac. Peace and thanks!
