A few removed features

Maybe these features have been gone for awhile but I just noticed them recently (since I'm in a mad package installation phase again). When you go to http://www.archlinux.org/packages you can no longer browse by category. The PKGBUILDs still let you specify them and /var/abs still pays attention to them but is there any specific reason why you removed that feature from the web interface? The CVS to SVN migration perhaps? It's not a huge deal, I really shouldn't be using the web interface that much but I thought the categories were more productive than the "i686" and "x86_64" tags beside each package.
Another thing I seem to remember was a pacman query option to list all unrequired packages that were initially installed as dependencies. This helps free up some space - if someone has an extremely basic X desktop, and then they suddenly install something like blender they are going to clutter their system with quite a few dependencies. If they decide to stop using blender on that machine, it helps to know exactly which packages can be uninstalled besides just blender. This isn't a big deal either because it's merely a matter of cross checking pacman -Qe with pacman -Qt. Is that what the old implementation did? Or was it something more complicated that was getting really hard to maintain?
I don't mean to complain about such a great distro but I have trouble seeing why these things were removed. I don't read the developer blogs as often as I should but is there a place where planned feature removals and reasons for them are routinely posted? This would be much appreciated and in some areas I would certainly be willing to help. I don't exactly know enough to be confident maintaining kernel26mm (no offence tomk, I can only imagine how hard that was to maintain) but if a simple algorithm in pacman is pending removal due to lack of developer interest, I'd be more than happy to write, test and submit patches.

The categories were removed when we switched to svn. They are no longer in abs except the ones for the community repo as it is still using cvs. Categories were awkward as packages could fit in several categories. To find a package, use the search box.

The current way to check orphans (according to man page) is with pacman -Qet

Unlimited plan - Paying Full Retail still removes features?

Got a strange question. First some background. I have an unlimited plan that I don't ever plan to get rid of. (Upgrade Eligible since 2011!) Its not that I really use the unlimited data as I usually less than 150MB per month, but the absolutely cheapest plan (500 MB) they want to move me to is ~$13 more per month even after my employee discount. Moving to the recommended 2GB plan really increases the cost ofcourse. Partially this is because we are being screwed with the changes to the employee discount (only applies to the "Data" now), but that is a topic for another thread.
Now to the question. When attempting to just outright buy the LG G2 through the Verizon site, it isn't prompting me to change my Data plan, as it shouldn't. But what I am curious about is why it is wanting to remove my Unlimited Mobile to Mobile and OFF Peak 7PM-6AM . These are some pretty key features of my plan, and as far as I know they shouldn't be changing my plan. Any clue as to why it is trying to remove these?

So it seems that it would still retain those features.

No desktop after removing feature

Hi,
I have removed feature .net4.5 then restared as it asked. Now I get a cmd prompt only; no desktop. Tried SConfig and enabling GUI but didn't work.

The situation you encountered is expected, when you remove the .NET 4.5 feature, there are a lot of roles and features depend on .Net Framework would be affected and also be removed.
Most importantly, there are 2 key features also affected.
[User Interfaces and Infrastructure] Server Graphical Shell
[User Interfaces and Infrastructure] User Interfaces and Infrastructure
Removal of above features will leave the server start up without a graphical shell for user interaction. Only the command prompt will be available post reboot.
So it’s not recommend to remove the .net4.5 on your server.
If you get into this situation, run the below commands in the Server Core’s command prompt window to help you recover:
Step 1:
DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /all /featurename:NetFx4
DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /all /featurename:MicrosoftWindowsPowerShell
The above commands will re-install .Net 4.0 and PowerShell on the server.
Step 2:
Once PowerShell is installed, you can add the Graphical Shell (Windows Explorer) using the following command:
Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra
Step 3:
Once the GUI Shell is installed, you will need to restart the server with the following command:
Restart-Computer

Server 2012 R2 - The Request To Add Or Remove Features Failed

I am having a frustrating time adding Remote Access role to my 2012 R2 domain controller (HyperV VM)...
It keeps failing with THE REQUEST TO ADD REMOVE FEATURES FAILED
I've tried repairing my component store with no luck...it keeps telling me the server requires a restart.
Could this have ANYTHING to do with the host machine needing a reboot? That is one thing I've not tired yet.

Check the below points regarding this issue,
- Make sure there are no entries in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session -Manager\ PendingFileRenameOperations.
- If there are, reboot to get them processed. Or do the renames manually and delete them.
- Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to clean up the component store.
- Don't install on a Domain Controller.
Once you have checked the above points try to add the role again.

Removed features in PSE 13 Organizer

Hi,
yesterday I upgraded PSE 12 to PSE 13.
Until now I used smart tagging and the extended search in the organizer to automatically separate pictures with persons from pictures containing nature or buildings only.
So I wonder why Adobe has removed these features in PSE 13?
But you can still use "AutoAnalyzer", but I do not see what it is good for. It seems that it doesn´t do anything?
So is there a way to use the PSE 13 organizer as i did with PSE 12? Or do I have to use the "old" organizer therefore?

But I can´t understand why Adobe didn´t give the customers the possibility to just switch on or off this features.
After converting to PSE 13 all smart tags I had in PSE 12 are gone!
And I am still wondering about the "AutoAnalyzer" feature in PSE13. What can it be used for?

The 3 ethernet ports on the AirPort are not enough and haven't been for some time. Now I purchased a switch with far more ports and the same speed so I am wondering if it's worth keeping the AirPort around. A few of the thoughts I have:
1. Use the AirPort between the firewall and the switch in bridge mode so I have the NAT feature as added security for my network. Is the NAT still active when in bridge mode or only under certain circumstances?
2. Use the AirPort, connected to the switch, to provide WiFi. As I disable WiFi when I don't need it the AirPort is far from ideal. Disabling WiFi through AirPort Utility makes it forget previous settings so I have to either restore a configuration file every time I want to enable WiFi or manually reconfigure. An old netgear I have has an on/off switch which is easier, the WiFi range is surprisingly good and it remembers the settings.
I don't NEED to keep the AirPort around, I just want to so I won't feel like I wasted $179 back when I purchased it. Just looking for suggestions or something I may not have thought of yet before I re-cable everything.

The "Off" (Bridge Mode) setting means that DHCP and NAT are "off".

That would work. Configured this way, the AirPort would be known as a Wireless Access Point

IPhoto seems to be missing few Photos features

I was hoping iPhoto can fully replace built-in Photos app, but alas, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Some of the most glaring omissions seems to be:
Cannot delete photos (what is the point of hiding photos if I cannot delete them all later?)
Cannot send photo to Messages (MMS), assign to contact, nor set as wallpaper
Create an album
Move photos to an album
Delete an album
Import photos from Camera Connection Kit
Faces and Places view
Am I wrong or do these features exist?
All in all, the app feels more like photo editor and social sharing tool, which is still fine, but a bit of a let down.

Not being there I can’t comment on what happened to it, but it would seem that it has been deleted inadvertently.
You can reinstall it:
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applcations Folder to the trash)
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

Red eye removal feature missing in camera update

Is there a red eye removal tool in the new camera update? This was available before the update.

Hi xbee167. I use my phone to take pictures of my family all the time, so I know how important some editing tools may be. The red eye removal is not in a current feature of the camera. Google Play offers lots of fantastic picture editing applications you may find useful for removing red eye among lots of other things. Simply tap your Play icon and then search for key words like "edit pictures" to find all the great applications you can use.

Removing Features of Controls, on Embedded Video

Is there any way to remove the expand feature from the controls on an embedded video? When my video expands... it doesn't center. Or is there a reason why it isn't centering?

Please upload it to dropbox or anyother online storage service, and send us the link so that we can test it out.
Are you saying for every video, you are having the same result?
In that case, can you tell us which browser and its version are you testing it on??

Removed Feature: Preview Tools Show Colors

I'm a little bummed. One of my most often-used features is now missing from Preview.
While I'm coding CSS, I frequently use a screen snapshot of a website in progress, open it in Preview, and then select Tools > Show Colors to display the Apple color palette. I had grown accustomed to sampling colors using this tool, then adding them to the global color palette, which I am then able to reference in my other design programs.
For some reason, this function has been removed in Snow Leopard. I can't figure out for the life of me why this feature would need to be removed.
It was bad enough that the Apple color palette did not support web colors in HEX format. I had to use a 3rd party plugin for this functionality. But it matters not, since now it appears the only option is to open these snapshots in Photoshop just to grab a simple HEX code for a color.
Talk about killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer.
If I'm missing something, will someone please enlighten me? I've poked around in the custom menu items, just to make sure that this function wasn't simply tucked elsewhere. I can't find it. one might even think that the built-in DigitalColor Meter utility might serve this purpose, but sadly, it does not.
Is there an easier way to grab a HEX code from a snapshot?

Thanks, micp. That's actually the plugin I've been using for a while. But the only way to invoke this tool in Preview is to select Tools > Fonts and then select the Colors tool.
Leopard's version of Preview had this function in the toolbar, with a convenient keyboard shortcut (Command + Shift + C ).
Still love the Hex Color Picker by Waffle Software. I'd be lost without it. Just wish it was easier to pull up that menu item.

Call Fowarding - accidentally removed feature

I enabled call forwarding from MyVerizon on the web, but forgot to turn it off before I left my computer. So I tried to use the MyVerizon APP on my phone to remove it but I think I removed the feature as an option? It now says Call forwarding not available for my phone when I try to revisit the same web interface. any suggestions?

Are you trying to set up or remove call forwarding? If you want your phone to ring (no call forwarding) find another phone and use it to call yourself. If it rings then you have no forwarding. If you want to forward your calls you dial *72 and the 10-digit number and press send on your device. Eg- *728005551234 then send. When you want to cancel *73 then send. I would try these steps first because they will save you lots of time calling if they work.
I just logged on to my account and searched for call forwarding and when I selected my line to forward I got the same message. So it seems like, though it's an option, you cannot do it online.
Try my above steps by forwarding your calls to a phone that you can hear ringing when you set the forward. For this you will need to have 3 phones available, yours and the one you want to forward to and the one you want to use to call. I promise this will take you less than 5 minutes to test rather than calling in and getting told you are ale to forward calls already.

With the bookmark changes of Safari 6.1 , when you drag a bookmark into a bookmark folder in Safari's "Edit Bookmarks" mode, the display suddenly and uncontrollably bounces back to the top of the bookmark list, losing your place. This makes it impossible to resume editing your collection without scrolling down any extensive list of bookmark folders and subfolders to pick up where you left off.
The "Edit Bookmarks" mode has also taken away the ability to view and edit your bookmarks in a sort of column view. Before, when editing bookmarks, you could click on a bookmarks folder in pane to the left, and the sub-folders and/or bookmarks for that specific bookmark folder would display inn a list in the main window. Removing this ability again forces ridiculous amounts of scrolling to organize extensive collections of bookmarks and bookmark subfolders.
I use bookmark folders and subfolders extensively and constantly to organize research. These present a a big and annoying problem for me.
Does anyone have a solution I'm missing?

When will the removed features be returned to the iWork suite?

After reading the comments about the loss of features in OS X Pages 09, I am happy about my practice of waiting for version x.1 or vers x.2 before upgrading. Now I have to think about this "upgrade".
My hope is that Apple will think it thru, issue an upgrade to Pages 09 - Pages Pro, and let all the people that make a living with Apple products, do so without losing any files and work to an underhanded file conversion and destruction. Hopefully the old formatted files are in the Trash or Time Machine and not vaporized.
In the meantime, I will be avoiding this current upgrade like the plague.
Hopefully the management group at Apple re-considers and develops a path that supports both the increasing circle of iDevice users and the people that helped Apple recover and use Apple products at the production level.

Don't expect the features back. Apple has made a conscious choice when programming this version.

Add/Remove Feature Not Functional Online!!

Like others who have posted here, I can't get to the Upgrade & Renewal Center at Verizon Central. I always get the message:
We're sorry. We are experiencing a temporary problem and can't continue your order at this time.
Please try again later.
Or, if you need immediate assistance, you can call your Verizon local business office.
It's been like this whenever I've checked over the last several months. How do people get this fixed?

I've been trying the same thing for the past week, calling Verizon people for assistance, none have been able to help. And, the online price is definitely better than ordering services over the phone. I was told by a person that the only way to get support is through Chat Room, which I'm in search of now when I found your message. It does seem pretty poor support to not be able to even have this type of error in the FAQ area.
