Blender's Open Movie Projects have already proved that it's possible to produce stunningly high-quality 3D animated films exclusively using free software in a studio setting. Now, a new animated short film called Tube, inspired by the ancient epic poem of Gilgamesh, is expanding on that work to bring free culture to the masses. The Tube project is not merely evidence of the technical capabilities of free software tools like Blender, PiTiVi, and Fedora GNU/Linux, but living proof of their viability for independent filmmakers. The most impressive aspect of the project is that it has managed to come together through distributed collaboration between 56 artists from 22 countries — some of which are at war. Tube truly highlights the incredible unifying power of free software tools and a free culture model.
Within the first few days, Tube's Kickstarter campaign reached the minimal baseline goal of $22K and subsequently hit Slashdot. As the film enters the final stages of production, the Tube team needs as much support as they can get to make this story a huge success for free software, free culture, and independent animators everywhere. With the production funding target of $50K in sight and just a couple days left in the campaign, this is your last chance to support this ambitious undertaking and get your name in the film as a backer. There is enormous potential here; as Mashable questions, 'Will This Open-Source Animated Film Change the Movie Industry Forever?'
The film's public release is scheduled for 7 months from now along with all the assets, source, and project files under the free culture and copyleft Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) licence. For an in-depth discussion with the team, check out this interview with the Tube project founders on Libre Graphics World.

Hey Syd,
Sounds like a great project you are planning to venture into!
I would only suggest that you think heavily about the ratio of theory to practical teaching you give. It's a fine line, and an even finer one if you plan to meet that often. I'd think 2 nights a week would be more appropriate for that age group.
The reason I mention that is because, unlike you, these kids may not be 'deadset' on film as a career. Therefore, they aren't going to be quite as interested in spending hours upon hours on theoretical lectures. They will enjoy themselves much more if you give them a knowledge of the film industry, but more than anything make the experience fun-- I'm a university student studying film and communication, and as much as I love to learn about the ins and outs of filmmaking, there are tons of film students who just aren't that keen. Seems crazy, but that's how it goes.
If this isn't the senario that you are trying to achieve, then forget what I've just said. If these are truly KEEN young people who want to work at making a great production, then by all means teach it straight and hard. But, otherwise, make it a fun learning experience and a taste of what filmmaking can be.
I wish you all the best in your endeavor.

  • Flash C5 pro used to create feature length animated films

    First, I have Adobe Production Suite CS5 on it's way and have been loooking for information on using several of the programs like Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Premiere.
    How is Flash C5 pro used to create feature length animated films?
    *I have been searching for days for information about using Flash in the creation of feature legenth animated films and all the videos on youtube I could find where about web related usage and so where the other I viewed that googl turned up. I did turn up one movie that Flash was used in a feature animated movie for a classical 2d animation style. The name of the movie is Romeo & Juliet, Sealed With A Kiss by Phil Nibbelink. through my searching so far one item turns up but no referance on how to set up Flash otherwise if not using them and that is - DO NOT USE ACTIONS. Ok, do not use actions and no referance on how to set up Flash to use it's tools in the creation of 2d feature animated film. I know it can be done as Phil Nibbleink's Romeo & Juliet, Sealed With A Kiss illustrates that it can.
    NOTE: If you have information (links, etc) on tutorials for using Flash in feature animated film making I would appricate links to them (I would prefer video tutorials). If you know if some of the companies that create taining videoes for Flash have these type of of training videoes please post who they are and the name of the course. I hace went through some of the sites that create training videoes for Flash and I could not find any they seemed to be for web usage and used actions.
    ANOTHER NOTE: If you know of any fourms that are for using Flash in feature film making please post them.
    *During my searching for using Flash in feature animtion film making I read a lot of toon boom vs flash items (and I am not starting a toon boom vs flash post here) one thing that seems to  stand out for toon boom is the camera fly throughs. Not having used Flash CS5 yet can this be done in Flash CS5 or is this where After Effects or Premiere is used to get that type of effect.
    *Sense Flash is a vector progam and more than likely the backgrounds and some fore grounds would be made in photoshop (raster) would Flash be used to create the characters and import (if they can be imported) into After Effects or Premiere to be able to use the raster backgroud (looking for a way to use the raster background non-destruticely) and should the the raster from photoshop be brought into After Effects or Premiere as an object layer?  Having look at Illustrator's new bristle brush (which create in vectors) it looks like it might be able to get a very painterly background any thoughts on this. Digressing some from Flash.
    TIA
    John

    I found this article

    here's the link

    But it does not say what the settings are to be (again is there a template or something that sets Flash cs5)

  • Blender animated Vimeovideos

    Hello. Today I run at a brand new iMac Intel 10.6.8 21.5 inch   64 bits and iMovie 11 version 9.0.2 (1099)
    Every time I drag a Blender avi- animation from my  Vimeo-album in to iMovie, I got poor quality on my iMovie-videos.
    If I buy Final Cut Pro X can I excpect better quality on my Vimeo stuff.  At Blender 2.5.8 I use  1280x720  H264xAVI. Vimeo convert them in to AVI -HD videos.
    Thanks
    Karl

    I can get textures, but i cant get any animated textures to work.
    Well, that would require PS to support animated textures in the first place, would it not? And it simply doesn't. That asisde it's a pretty nonsensical workflow - whatever you are trying to do by hopping between 3 programs could probably be done easily in Blender's comp/ shading tree with direct access to texture data, render passes and all that. Realyl. For everything else you might wanan check this old article of mine to get an idea about a workflow that actually makes sense and plays out the benefits of working with render passes...

  • Duke Pt avail. 2nd time askin, (Flicker-free background) Simple Animation

    2nd time askin, since didn't get sufficient help. Duke Pts available! I am trying to create simple animation on a solid constant background. I used double buffering for moving the object and it works fine. But the problem is with the background image. The image seems to flicker while the object is moving. Here's my code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.Applet;
    public class changed extends Applet implements Runnable{
    Image buffer;
    Graphics bufferg;
    Thread main;
    int x=0;
    boolean flag=false;
    public void init(){
    setSize(500,500);
    main=new Thread(this);
    main.start();
    buffer=createImage(getSize().width,getSize().height);
    bufferg=buffer.getGraphics();
    public void run(){
    while(main!=null){
    try     {
    main.sleep(50);
    catch(Exception e){}
    repaint();
    public void stop(){
    if(main!=null){main.stop();}
    public void paint(Graphics g){
    update(g);
    public void update(Graphics g){
    Dimension d=getSize();
    bufferg.setColor(getBackground());
    bufferg.fillRect(0,0,d.width,d.height);
    bufferg.setColor(Color.red);
    Image img = getImage(getCodeBase(),"bliss.jpg");
    if((x<500)&(!flag))
    bufferg.fillRect(x+=5,10,25,25);
    else
    flag=true;
    bufferg.fillRect(x-=5,10,25,25);
    if(x==0)
    flag=false;
    g.drawImage(img,50,50,this);
    g.drawImage(buffer,0,0,this);
    Please help me with this minor problem. I think what's happening is that the background is been drawn over and over again. I don't know how to make it constant and flicker-free.

    Possible 2 things:
    1. You're reloading the image on each repaint:
    Image img = getImage(getCodeBase(),"bliss.jpg");You shouldn't do that, you should just load it in init.
    2. You're drawing the image with the non-buffer Graphics "g" instead of "bufferg." You should use bufferg and draw it before anything else.
    I've modified the code for you, it should work but I can't test it because I don't have bliss.jpg. Let me know if it doesn't work.
    Here's the modified code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.Applet;
    public class changed extends Applet implements Runnable {
         Image buffer,img;
         Graphics bufferg;
         Thread main;
         int x = 0;
         boolean flag = false;
         public void init() {
              setSize(500, 500);
              img = getImage(getCodeBase(), "bliss.jpg");
              main = new Thread(this);
              main.start();
              buffer = createImage(getSize().width, getSize().height);
              bufferg = buffer.getGraphics();
         public void run() {
              while (main != null) {
                   try {
                        main.sleep(50);
                   } catch (Exception e) {}
                   repaint();
         public void stop() {
              if (main != null) {
                   main.stop();
         public void paint(Graphics g) {
              update(g);
         public void update(Graphics g) {
              Dimension d = getSize();
              bufferg.drawImage(img, 50, 50, this);
              bufferg.setColor(getBackground());
              bufferg.fillRect(0, 0, d.width, d.height);
              bufferg.setColor(Color.red);
              if ((x < 500) & (!flag)) {
                   bufferg.fillRect(x += 5, 10, 25, 25);
              } else {
                   flag = true;
                   bufferg.fillRect(x -= 5, 10, 25, 25);
                   if (x == 0)
                        flag = false;
              g.drawImage(buffer, 0, 0, this);

  • Frame blending and Film look

    Hi everyone,
    I'm editing a moutain bike video shot with a sony HDR FX1 in HD and imported as SD.
    Editing is finished and if I preview the video on my computer screen its just fine, but if viewed on a TV it has of course that artificial digital look far away from film. now, I noticed that the portions of clips that have been slowed down to 50% and used "frame blending" do look a lot better... by better I mean, they loose a bit of that digital "sharpness". I also played with gamma and colors but I think that the "frame blending" adds a sort of "softness.
    I was wondering: if I duplicate my sequence, overlap the original with it's duplicate and play abit with blur (or else?) and make it let's say 30% transparent... would that help?
    any suggestions?
    I've seen a skiing video presented on QT website shot in HD and compressed H264... and it has that perfect film look.
    Would love to know your thoughts.
    Thanks
    Ciao

    Ok,
    this is the procedure I courageously undertook:
    1. duplicate of my sequence
    2. added to the new sequence a level 4 blurr
    3. played with color and gamma levels
    4. overlapped the two sequences
    5. adgusted transparency of the copy sequence according to the different portions of clips... some may result too dark. Transparency goes from 50 to 75%
    Result: clearly a less digital look - closer to film -smooth
    Downsides: loss of luminosity - everytime I change transparency it takes about 5 hours to render and if it doesn't look how you want it, you have to add another 5 hours.
    Raises a problem: on TV it has a look and on a computer screen it has another. Consequently you have to create two separate files according to where you want to play it!
    I'm sure there is a better way to do it.

  • Free Transform as Animation? (6.2.2. - 10.10)

    Hi!
    I'm creating some simple motion graphics in keynote (a surprisingly good balance of power - ease of use!) However, I want to animate a box transforming in length, i.e. getting broader. With the normal animations, you can only scale shapes, mening there is no way to make a prefect square rectangular.
    Is there a work around or tool I'm missing, or is this simply not possible?

    The scale action would be the effect to use, but it does not allow the shape to be changed, as constrain proportion is locked on.
    A work around is to create another shape with the same colour but sized as a rectangle with an opacity effect to use as a dissolve:
    select the rectangle:
    Inspector > Format > Style > Opacity; drag the slider to 0%
    Inspector > Animate > Action > Opacity: drag the slider to 100%

  • Using apple Royality free music for short film...

    Does anybody know that if I use a track from apples royalty free music library in soundtrack, do I have to put it in the credits where the track came from. And what should I put? The track name and courtesy of apple or something like that?
    Thank you so much for your help!

    You might consider contacting [Associated Production Music|http://www.apmmusic.com/pages/faq.html] and asking them. There's nothing in Apple documentation that addresses this.

    By owning Illusion Mage you can be in good company with idiots.
    There is a reason why Illusion Mage does not appear on that Wikipedia article.
    Illusion Mage is the free (GPL) Blender 3D, 'repackaged' and sold to clueless people.
    The seller of Illusion Mage has done a good job of keyword spamming Google with articles that look like they are questioning Illusion Mage as a scam. But if you click on those articles, you see bogus glowing reviews that lead to the Illusion Mage web site.
    Here are links to truthful information and reviews about Illusion Mage. Illusion Mage is a scam.
    3DMagix and IllusionMage, scam or open source leeches?
    Illusion Mage & 3D Magix Pro *is* a scam
    3DMagix, 3DMagixPro, IllusionMage, scam
    From Blender Nation
    Illusion Mage is not "used by animation studios worldwide" because animation studios would not be so stupid to purchase software that is already free.
    Terry, I would report your post to the moderators to remove as spam but the Adobe forums are ranked highly on search engines. It may have been your worst mistake to mention Illusion Mage here. You've just given yourself and Ilusion Mage some bad internet publicity.

  • How many frames should I cut out each second to get a old film look?

    Hi,
    What is the general rule of thumb (if their is one) of how many frames should be cut every second to achieve a choppy old film look? Or maybe it's not every second? What do you guys do?

    you will get a more realistic look if you chop out frames manually
    dump the playhead arbitrarily on the time line insert a cut nudge the playhead either i or 2 frames on and cut again discard the frames and either leave the black or butt the clips up for a "skip".
    this really doesn't take long to do and is better than a predetermined sequence of chops made by a filter.
    CGM do a free filter for aged film to add the hairs, navel lint, boogers etc . .

  • Animating video in photoshop

    i am animating film footage in photoshop Cs6.  i have used the paint brush tool to draw an image over my film, which works nicely.  but i have to do this frame by frame--e.g. as i move to the next frame, what i draw is gone, and i have to reanimate every frame.  is there a way to hold what i paint in one frame on to the next, so that i am producing a progressive image over the film?

    You can create a frame animation.  What you will have is a series of layers each with a step in your progression.  You start by creating the first frame in the frame animation dialog box and turn on the visibility of the layer that you want in that first frame.  Then you create a new layer with your painting.  Then, leaving the original layer visible, you create a new frame.  What ever is visiable in your layer pallet will be visible in the created frame.

  • Cannot download even free appls in Cyprus.Please help

    Hi,
    I come from Cyprus and itunes is not available in my country and asks a credit card from Greece.
    Why can't I even download FREE appls? I don't understand...can you please help me?

    If there is no iTunes store in your country then unfortunately you cannot purchase apps (including free ones), nor music, films, audiobooks etc from Apple. The terms of use of each of the iTunes stores state that you have to be in the country (due to licensing terms etc) - so you cannot use other country's stores.

  • Film Download Problem.

    Hi guys,
    I'm currently using my iPod Touch with the latest Software (3.1.2) and recently downloaded an App called "12 Days". I'm sure most of you have seen it; it's were Apple are giving away various types of media for free from the 26th of December to the 6th of January.
    Any who, today's free download was the film "Lesbian Vampire Killers" and it's 1.2GB in size so I've been leaving it to download the majority of the day. Only up until now it was two third's of the way through and it's decided to give me a download error within iTunes (on the iPod). There's no specific code for the error or anything it just returns me "Download Error. Tap to retry" ... so I do and I am returned with the same error over and over. Which is a pain.
    Now I'm not too fussed about loosing this film as it was only for free but it is still taking up nearly a gigabytes worth of space on my iPod and I can't seem to delete the current download now that its stopped half way through and neither is it showing within my "Downloaded Content" or "Videos" section.
    Thoroughly frustrating. Anybody had the same problem? What do I do?
    Kind Regards,
    Sean

    That's not the only problem. My 32gb ipod touch was left to download it too and seemed to do so OK, although it did have a "not connected to network" error right at the end when it is "processing" the download. I tried to play the film and it seemed to be absolutely fine (its rubbish by the way but hey it was free). The big problem starts when you try to sync the ipod with a PC to transfer the film into an itunes library - basically it has forced a restore of my ipod and I've lost all my exclusive content that I've purchased via wifi direct to the ipod between syncs, £15 worth of apps and songs. I am not a happy customer at all.

  • Stop Frame Animation

    On behalf of a young lad (13)....
    Can this software enable him to do stop frame animation? If not what is an alternative that is afordable for a 13 yr old lad's pockets?
    What is the best video camera for this type of activity?
    Many thanks to those who respond. Much appreciated.

    I should have explained that in the main I am not technologically advanced.
    It appears that Premiership Elements is capable of creating stop frame animation films and that a DSLR is best. It took a while but I guess that a DSLR is a a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera.
    Many thanks to you all.
