A friendly WARNING!!!!

I just want to warn any new Verizon customer and any veteran customers considering to fall for the EDGE program and any options to get a "free" piece of equipment.. The contracts are very confusing to understand when the transactions are complete and your contracts are signed and dated!.
I thought I was actually going into the store for an early upgrade promotion when I regretfully fell for the free 4G LTE piece of garbage tablet they said was "free". It turns out in the end that it cost me $50.00, an early cancel fee if I remove it from my acct. so I just have to remember to suspend the $10.00 per month usage fee if I use it, every 90 days til the contract is over. The pad it seriously not worth it. SCAMMED! Then I thought I was actually getting my free smartphone upgrade when in fact in the end I was put on the "EDGE" program and charged $299.00 for a supposedly $1000.00 phone, now being billed $14.99 a month for 2 years unless I just pay it off sooner. I feel really stupid for falling for so much all at once. I learned a valuable lesson, get all the REAL facts, go home do the research on the equipment before agreeing to and signing ANYTHING! DON'T be vulnerable in the stores!!!
One more thing I want to add, am I the only one that finds 99% of the sales people in the stores really arrogant? They just are!!!!
I have been with Verizon since 2004, that is 11 years. I am sorry for allowing myself to be talked into staying with them for yet another contractual period.
I have this piece of junk 4G LTE pad that is not worth the time and I will never go into another Verizon store to get my upgrades ever again. ALL the phones are less expensive online and you can have all the set up of the new phones activated, backed up and ready to go within 10 mins. instead of the 2 hours you find yourself in the stores being talked into something you really do not need.
I agree that Verizon coverage is great but I keep hearing about one or two others that are pretty great as well. I will find out for myself as soon as I get past this awful cancellation fee for the free 4G pad SCAM I fell for.

$300 for a phone is pretty cheap. $1000 phone?????? Never seen one. $14.99 for 24 months is about right including taxes on a $300 phone though. Usually the tax is paid up front. As far as upgrading a 2 year contract vs an Edge agreement, the price of the phone should have been a giveaway. The contract phones are almost always 25-50% of the full cost and the Edge phones are $15-$25 a month depending on model of phone. As far as the tablets go, a lot of folks get taken in by that "FREE" jive, but in the end, there is paperwork to read and understand, then a signature stating the terms were read and understood.

No More Low Battery Warning

I used to get a friendly warning that my battery was running low. Now my MacBook just turns off abruptly, losing all my unsaved data. Similarly, once upon a time it would go into a deep sleep and last for hours in that state, no longer. Are these known issues? Or is the solution "buy a new battery" even though this thing is just a year old?

As an addendum to my 12 March posting, a battery re-cal didn't work.
The bundles inc BatteryUpdater and PowerManagement are still .bundle files but are listed under 'Kind' as iDVD 2 files instead of bundle files. (Uh???)
I upgraded my HDD to 250GB in Sept 07 so it has loads more stuff on now. I tried putting the old disc back in, but not allowing a s/w update and all was well. I made a copy of the .bundles. I then s/w updated the old HDD and things were still OK. Now I've swapped the HDDs back, I've got the same old problem, abrupt power down, no battery alert. I trashed the BatteryUpdater bundle and tried copying a 'good' one back into SystemConfiguration but it wouldn't let me do it without authentication. Did a s/w update to get 1.2 back but still turned out to be an iDVD 2 kind.
I thought it would be wise to stop at this point and see if anyone had any ideas?
Does the 'kind' matter?
I see Johan Kool in his link recommends his actions to ALL MacBook users; is this OK when running Tiger 10.4.11 Johan?

What's the point of warranty?

I am a student coming from Hong Kong to London for postgraduate study. Before I left Hong Kong, I decided to buy a netbook for my lecturers in the UK. Lenovo s10-2 was chosen because the version available in HK comes with 6 cell battery with international warranty and Lenovo Protection Service (against accidental damage).
This is the first Lenovo machine for me. All was well and I was starting to appreciate Lenovo. Suddenly, the LED screen started to flick with white lines moving across the it, just two weeks after I bought it from Hong Kong.
Yesterday, I called the UK support line who initially suggested replacement (because the purchase is last than 30-day old). However, when the agent found out that I bought the machine in Hong Kong, he said I could only get it repairs. Fair enough.
I packed the netbook this afternoon ready to ship it to the repair center. Being not sure about whether or not my proof of purchase was needed, I called the support line again. This time, the agent gave me a "friendly warning" or maybe a management of my expectations.
I was told that Lenovo believes that there is a 99.5% chance that these type of problems are due to “internal damages" caused by users! I was also advised that sending the machine in for repairs risk myself getting into paying 230 pounds (pretty much the purchase cost) to get the LED screen fixed because it is likely to be not covered by warranty. On top of that, I would have to pay 65 pounds even if I want my netbook back after inspection without getting fixed because again, 99.5% chance that "damages by users" would be concluded!
What's the point of warranty? Totally unacceptable. Any thoughts? Should I take the risk?
I only got the machine just over two weeks ago and used for less than 10 times!

This bears a bit of looking into to provide you the best answer. Sometimes, the accidental damage policies are only valid in the home country, and I would like to check. If that were to be the case, you would have replacement or repair options in HK, but standard warranty terms would likely apply in UK.
Your situation sounds exceptional, and I'd like to look into this and see what can be done.

Canon CRW Raw files not supported in Preview, Nikon supported

With Panther and Jaguar, Canon RAW files in crw format were supported in Preview. In Tiger, these files are not. Also, when importing these files from camera or CF reader, canon raw files tagged with .thm! What is this? an 8 kb "document" that renders file corrupt. Did not happen in Panther or Jaguar. And the problem is NOT my camera because it works fine on Windows PC and on previous OS mac.
here's the kicker: Nikon NEF raw format is NOW supported by Preview, but was NOT supported in Panther and Jaguar.
So, I called AppleCare and they say NO raw formats should be supported by Preview.
Another example of how Apple has lost compatibility and quality control?
Anyone else who uses RAW files in photography have same experience?

The easiest way to edit plist files is with Property List Editor, which you get installed if you install the Developer stuff that comes with your OS install disks. If you don't want to add all that stuff your computer, it is possible to edit with a a straight text editing program in plain text. Personally I find that too confusing. I put a copy of my edited Raw.plist file up:

It has the substitution of the S50 for the original S60. It also lists the S70, so your Canon S70 should be working. If it isn't working either, then this hack won't help you. Download and unzip the file.
Because of permissions--you aren't supposed to be mucking about in this area--the easiest way to proceed is using the Terminal. The path is, unfortunately, extremely long. You open the System folder, then the Library folder, then Frameworks, ApplicationServices.framework, then Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources. You should now see a list of files that includes the Raw.plist file. Leave that Finder window open.
Launch Terminal from your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you have never used it, nor ever used a sudo command you will get a friendly warning when you issue the first command. We want to make sure that the original file doesn't get lost. So type:
sudo mv
and a space, then drag the Raw.plist file into the Terminal and drop it. The Terminal will helpfully fill in the path. Add a space, then copy the path up to the file name and paste, then type RawOld.plist as the new file name and hit the Return key. You'll need to type your password, which is NOT echoed to the screen, so type carefully and hit the return key again.
Next you want to add the modified Raw.plist file to the folder. Using a sudo copy command will insure that it belongs to system. So type
sudo cp
add a space and drag the new Raw.plist file into the Terminal window. Paste in the path to the folder (it should still be on the clipboard) hit return, give your password and hit return again. I don't remember whether it was necessary to restart the Finder or not. You might want to do a restart and then Repair Permissions, just to be on the safe side.

Itunes/Ipod installation continues to fail

Hello,
Nothing seems to be going right with my ipod set up. I thought the issue was with a conflict with Norton, so I removed that, but still no luck. Here's the rundown: Install itunes on my computer. This runs without a hitch except at the end I receive an error (quicktime installation failed : -3). I make sure quicktime is uninstalled completely before trying to install, but I still get the error. Ok. Well, I plug in my ipod, open up Itunes (itunes doesnt open automatically upon connection of ipod), and I get the message "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall itunes." Alright. Fair enough, though I can't imagine why I'm getting this warning. I click ok, and a new, friendly warning tells me "the software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes to install the ipods software." Great. The ipod is recognized in my computer (it shows up as the E: drive), but that's about it. Attempts to use the Ipod updater gives me an "ipod service error." I have attempted reinstalling itunes numerous times, making sure that all bits are completely removed. I downloaded the latest version of itunes. It seems that there are those who are having problems similar to mine, so I avoided making a post and flooding the forum with more of the same, but none of the solutions I read have helped. I'd love for someone to assist me, I've had my ipod for several months and haven't been able to use it!

If the problem still occurs after restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod, then you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Text message transfer to N8

Hey guys, I tried many times and can't get around this problem. So I have about 5500 messages on my N97 and want to transfer them to N8 but when it try the phone switch and transfer them with Bluetooth it literally takes for ever, last time I tried it transferred like 30 in 5 minutes, is there anyway I can make it go faster? Also tried to backup my messages on Ovi suit and PC suite, well on PC suit it gives me an error saying there is not enough memory(On the PC suite application on my computer) and it backs it up short, only 1000 I think and in OVI suit, I backed it up fine but when tried to restore, it did it and took some time but nothing happened, number of txt messages didn't change. Anyone has a easier way to do this?

If anyone runs into problems transferring messages from their previous phone to the N8, I managed to sort my ones out from i8910 (s60 v5).
I used the latest version of pc suite, which places messages into conversations like on the N8.
Now I had like 50 Drafts, which didn't sync, so instead its best to manually do each folder manually.
Connect S60 V5 or older phone, give it some time to load the phone previous. You will see messages without syncing, on the phone section below the pc suite copy. If it didn't sync some folders, then disconnect and connect again. You can move the inbox first, from inbox > inbox (in pc)
Connect N8 & again manually select all the items from inbox & drag back into phone. Repeat this process per folder. You may need to get creative, like if it doesn't show up, then clear your inbox in the old phone once all messages transferred & for example select all drafts from drafts (on phone) and move to inbox & repeat.
Got my one sorted in about 10 minutes for about 200 messages. Including folders.

Custom Shape not showing up in animated gif

Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to this/to PS so apologies upfront and send me elsewhere if I'm in the wrong discussion. But here's my problem: I'm trying to create an animated gif. It's pretty simple and only involves 3 layers, with some tweening for a fade in. Then 2 of the 3 layers are text layers with vector masks (the custom shape talk bubble with some text). But when I add a frame to the animation, select that text/vector mask layer, then add another frame, and select the other layer with the second text/talk bubble and then play the animation, the bubble never appears.
Also when just working with the layers in my psd, I see that when I click away to a basic layer and come back to a layer with the vector mask, I always have to actually click the vector mask thumbnail to see the whole thing on the screen.
Any ideas? (I said I was new . . . .)

Custom icons not showing up in installer dialogs

What are the steps that are required to get a custom icon to show up in the installation dialogs?
I have custom icons setup in the application descriptor xml file for my app... and they do show up in the OS after I install the application but I don't see the icon showing up in the install dialogs.
Any ideas why the custom icons are not showing up in the installation dialogs?

I am getting the same thing in my Yahoo email account. It simply means that a hacker got to either your list of contacts or any of your friends' list and is using the email addresses to send out spam.
Change your password; however, since the cat is out of the bag so to speak, not much you can do. I've eliminated most of my contacts in my Yahoo account in case it's "raided" again; if this is your main email address, I'd probably send an email to your friends warning them that they might be getting spam and it's really not from you. You can also delete that account and start another, but it may be hacked again...

Securing my MacBook on a Open Wifi Network

Ive been using some open wifi networks that I have been finding all over the place, does this mean they can access my macbook?
How do i make sure that i can use these open wifi networks but thay can access my files?

Please don't kid yourselves guys. It may not seem right to you that it can be illegal to connect to an open network without permission, but there has been cases in the UK and the US where people have been arrested and convicted for this particular thing.
Just because it doesn't seem wrong, doesn't mean it isn't illegal. Whether it is illegal in Australia remains to be seen, that is a court decisison will probably decide and I wouldn't want to be the first person on trial if I was him.
The idea is that you are using someone else's bandwidth without permission, thus committing theft. If you walk into an unlocked house and take a Television, it is still theft, regardless of whether the door was unlocked. If you take a car which has the keys in the ignition and the doors wide open, it is still theft.
In many, many countries the legal system will consider the same to be the case with using other people's bandwidth. If you are cracking someone's password, you are clearly committing a crime, but you may not be in the clear simply because you don't have to.
There is also no reason to get defensive about this, I am simply giving someone a friendly warning. I have myself used open networks in the past, but will certainly be careful about it in the future.

Put as much work into formulating your question as you'd like a forum member to put in answering your question.
Please restate your question assuming that we know nothing about your game, the board, the tanks, what they do, how they move, etc. Again, the more useful information you give (not extraneous info that's not helpful though) and the more clear your descriptions, the better your possible answers.

Discussions relating to MDX and other Analysis Services or OLAP questions

In my Analysis services i have DimGeography, DimCustomer, DimDate dimemsions and Sales measure group.
By using above cube i have created SSRS report for the Area wise sales.
DimGeography will contains the region values.(East, West, North, Souuth,.....)
DimGeography will contains the Customers details.
Now the the requirment is for few customers we have to devide the Region wise sales based on customers.
For example
in case of Customer_1, the sales will be 10% East, 30% West, 25% Notrth, 35% South..
in case of Customer_2, the sales will be 15% East, 40% West, 20% Notrth, 55% South..
in case of Customer_n, the sales will be 30% East, 30% West, 25% Notrth, 15% South..
The above persentage values will change for every quarter. We will generate report as per new values only. We are not considering old values. We will store these values in Table and will update every quarter These table not having in Cubes.
Can you please suggest me how to impliment this logic in Report.

Thank you both for your comments, I had previous discussed this & the issue with the wrist strap, I'll have to find those comments & repost as advised by nokia support.
So the sensor isn't idea, the inner ear canal exists unfortunately the sensor cannot deal with it when the sensor goes over the ear under those circumstances. I'll have to repost those comments soon.

No such thing. You can only try this. And just a friendly warning just in case there is a misunderstanding here: If you assume you could just use your Windows serials on Mac, than you are gravely mistaken. Serials are platform specific and your only option would be to upgrade and make the platform switch then.

Phone contacts and Mac contacts

My husband needed Verizon so just recently got the iPhone although I've had mine from the beginning. The Verizon people transferred all his contacts that he manually entered to his old phone, to the iPhone. We also have a huge list of contacts that are synced to all our computers and MobileMe. I know many of his will be duplicates of our Mac contacts but that's okay if I can make his contacts a separate group which he'll select and I will de-select ... but will this be possible when we first sync?
Has anyone tried merging two sets of contacts and then separate them via groups? Is there another way?

Since you've been so helpful maybe you can steer me in the right direction for me to truly understand the difference (if any) between syncing (between mobile me, my phones, pads and macs) via iTunes settings & device settings and via the mobileme sync preferences & sync now. I've never understood it and I just want everything to have the same contacts and calendars on it but it seems the mobileme sync preferences thing always give me (more than 25%) error messages or tons of duplicates even after I reset sync data. Is there anywhere that explains it? I've been trying to understand it for years!!
MobileMe is a conglomerate of services, one of which is synchronizing between all your iOS devices (iPad, iPhone) and your Mac. It keeps your data "in the cloud" (a buzz term that has been thrown around lately that really means remotely on Apple's servers, not locally on your computer). MobileMe allows you to have all your data current by comparing it with it's master copy on their servers.
iTunes is used for synchronizing your iOS devices only. For those who do not have MobileMe, they can use iTunes to sync their contacts over the USB cable. All data is stored locally (not in the cloud) on that person's computer. If you are using MobileMe already and sync your iPhone in iTunes, it will not even look at your contacts or calendars as it knows you are using MobileMe for this. Think of iTunes and MobileMe as a one of the other thing - not both (in terms of data syncing).
When you "sync now" from the MobileMe preferences it is just referring to syncing your Mac, not your iOS devices. Syncing of MobileMe data on iOS is handled directly through the device itself. As for the 25% error message, that is a threshold that you have set up to alert you that it is about to change a significant portion of your data and a friendly warning asking if you're sure you want to proceed. Before I can suggest how to proceed, which has the most accurate, up to date data? Your Mac or Me.com?
