A function needs to return 2 different types !!!

Hi
I have a function. I am doing some operation in that. Those 2 are inter-dependent; they have to be in the same function. The result of these 2 operations are stored in 2 different variables of different dataTypes. Now, I need to call the same function twice, if i want the value of those 2 variables, which is a performance issue. Please suggest me what I shud do in this case..
Thanks,
Ranji

Unless you're searching through a local array, which would be totally pointless
The local array has only the string(s) i am searching for. It is not as same as the first array
I am doing an extraction here. Hope you are getting my point

  • Problem with function, need to return a very large number

    I have a function that is used to derive a number by using a defined algorithm. We have tested it many times in our 'development' region and it works. We moved it to our 'UAT' region and now the function is giving an error. The data is the same in both oracle instances. So.... dba's are telling me it is the function. At this point, I don't know what to do.
    Can I declare "RESULT" in a function so that it can return a number this big: 2.00023880306E24?

    Hi,
    Did you look up that error in the error messages manual?

    <h3>ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value errorstring </h3>
    Cause: An arithmetic, numeric, string, conversion, or constraint error occurred. For example, this error occurs if an attempt is made to assign the value NULL to a variable declared NOT NULL, or if an attempt is made to assign an integer larger than 99 to a variable declared NUMBER(2).
    Action: Change the data, how it is manipulated, or how it is declared so that values do not violate constraints.
    If you declare variables like this:
    x     NUMBER;
    y     NUMBER (20, 10);there woul be no problem assigning a value like 2E24 to x, but there would be if you tried it with y.

    I have the latest iTunes but am unable to update my phone or my ipad 2 I have been in to the shop and they said I need to download a different type of iTunes for wifi I have a desk top with windows vista and wifi can you please help

    We'll need more information before anyone can be of much help. What model iPhone is it, what versions of iOS are running on the iPad 2 now, what exactly are you trying to update, and what version of iTunes are you running? And what exactly is going wrong (include error messages if any).
    Once we have that information, someone here can probably offer advice. Note that you cannot sync content or upgrade iOS wirelessly until you get your iPhone and iPad up to iOS 5 and that requires that you connect those devices to your computer via the Dock-USB cable.

  • Having an inherited function return the derived type instead of the base type

    I am writing two classes in C#:
    A Matrix class
    that represents a general Matrix with n-by-m dimensions
    A SquareMatrix class
    that inherits from Matrix and
    has the constraint of being n-by-n
    The reason I designed it this way is because square matrices support additional specific operations like calculating the determinant or the inverse, so being able to guarantee that those functions are avaliable with the specific type you're using are nice things
    to have. Additionally it would support all the regular Matrix operations and can be used as a Matrix
    I have a function in Matrix called getTranspose().
    It calculates the transpose of the Matrix and returns it as a new Matrix
    I inherited it in SquareMatrix,
    but because the transpose of a square matrix is guaranteed to be square matrix, I also want it to return a SquareMatrix
    I am unsure about the best way to do this.
    I can re-implement the function in SquareMatrix,
    but that would be code duplication because it's essentially the same calculation
    I can use implicit typecast operators, but if I understand correctly that would cause unnecessary allocations (upcast SquareMatrix to Matrix,
    create a new Matrix as
    the transpose, create a new SquareMatrix during
    typecasting and throw away the tranposed Matrix)
    I can use explicit typecast operators, but it would be stupid to have to typecast the transpose of a SquareMatrix explicitly,
    and it also has the same problem of the implicit operator with unnecessary allocations
    Is there another option? Should I change the design of having SquareMatrix inherit
    from Matrix?
    This problem also applies to operators. It seems that I have to either implement typecasting operators which might cost in performance, or have to re-implement the same code.

    Inheritance not helping to eliminate repetition and typecasts is often a sign that generics would help. You can do something like:
    public T getTranspose<T>()
    // or non-member function
    T getTranspose<T>(T input)
    I haven't fully worked it out, but it seems it might get awkward on the calling side. I know C# does some inference with generic methods, but I don't know C#, so I'm not familiar with the details. That might be the way you have to go, though, if you want
    full compile-time type checking with the least amount of repetition in the implementation.
    Another option would be to create private helper functions, then pass in the result type you want, for the helper to populate, like:
    public SquareMatrix getTranspose() {
    SquareMatrix result = new SquareMatrix();
    transposeHelper(result);
    return result;
    This gives you more boilerplate on the implementation side, but at least it isn't full repetition.
    A third option is just to check if the result is square in the Matrix implementation, and return a
    SquareMatrix if it is, like:
    public Matrix getTranspose() {
    Matrix result;
    if (resultIsSquare())
    result = new SquareMatrix();
    else
    result = new Matrix();
    // calculate result
    return result;
    This has the advantage of not needing any implementation at all for getTranspose() in
    SquareMatrix, but at the expense of requiring type checking of the return value at the call site. It also works for cases like multiplying two non-square matrices that happen to give a square result. You give up most compile-time type checking,
    though.
    If your application happens to mostly require run-time instead of compile-time type checking anyway, you might as well just give up the different types and throw an exception if you call a method that a non-square matrix doesn't support. I believe this is
    the approach most existing libraries take, especially since there are other conditions than being non-square that can cause methods like
    inverse() to fail.
    Speaking of libraries, there are a lot of good ones out there for matrix math, that are already heavily tested and optimized. Don't reinvent the wheel if you don't have to.

  • Need to return data from a query in different ways - Please help

    We are using 10g R2
    I have a proc as follows that has a query with over 100 values in the select clause:
    proc one( input param1, input_param2,.... output_cursor )
    as
    begin
    open cursor for
    select ...about 100 values with most of them being calculated
    from table1, view 1, table2, table 3, view 2 ...
    where ....
    and table1.col1 = input param1
    and table1.col2 = input param 2
    and view1.col5 = input param5...
    end;
    I need to return the data that comes from the above query in different formats, columns for a report would be different from columns for screen A and different for screen B. I need only certain columns for a report and different set of columns for another screen. I have wrapper procs that get different input params. From the wrapper procs I intend to call the above proc but would like only selected values.
    How can I accomplish this? Since my main goal is to select different columns for each wrapper I was thinking of insert the data from the above proc into global temp table and selecting whatever columns and order I want from the wrappers.
    What do you think? Any other solutions?
    Thanks

    You need to clearly separate roles and responsibilities. The PL/SQL code that creates and supplies a cursor handle is server code tasked to supply data. The code that makes the call for server data, is responsible for formatting and rendering that data.
    Thus moving data formatting into the server code needs to be question. Simple example. Cursor does not return invoice date as a date - but formats it into a string using TO_CHAR().
    This works for client1 - as that is the date format expected. However, client2 has different International settings and specifies a different date format. Invoice date, formatted into a string by the server, now renders in the wrong format on client2.
    Server code should not be concerned with rendering and formatting of data send to a client.
    As for the idea to use a global temp table is ..., well to put it nicely, it smells. Badly.
    The single most expensive operation on a database platform is I/O. And now you want to read server data and write it to temporary storage, and the read data from temporary storage to return to the client? What on earth for!? Why purposefully increase the size of the I/O workload? Why decrease performance and undermine scalability?
    Provide a proper abstraction interface to the client. Enable it to specify (as simplistically as possible) what it wants ito data. There are a number of ways to design and implement this in PL/SQL. Simplistic example:
    SQL> create or replace package Employees as
      2

  • I Need to Return Two values or more from Function, Is this possible?

    Below is the offending query, I am trying to pass v_bu and v_po to this function, and after validations then return v_count and v_action is this possible in a function? I am having problem returning two values.
    see below code
    function po_edi_func(v_bu purchase_order.business_unit_id%type,
         v_po purchase_order.purchase_order_number%type)

         if v_count <> v_ctdel then -- ALl PO's Cancelled--
         v_action := 'U'; -- - NOT ALL PO DELETED --
         else

    else
         v_action := 'I';-- New PO INSERT--
    end if;
    commit;
    return v_count;
    end;

    Paul,
    This is becoming a nightmare to me, can you look at the below and tell me where I am having a problem
    This is the Function below
    CREATE OR REPLACE function po_edi_func(v_bu sewn.purchase_order.business_unit_id%type,
         v_po sewn.purchase_order.purchase_order_number%type,v_action_out OUT VARCHAR2)
         return number as pragma autonomous_transaction;
         v_count               number;
         v_ctdel               number;
         v_action          varchar2(1);
    begin
    select count(*)
    into v_count
    from sewn.purchase_order
    where business_unit_id=v_bu
    and purchase_order_number =v_po;
    if v_count > 0 then
         select count(*)
         into v_ctdel
         from sewn.purchase_order
         where business_unit_id=v_bu
    and purchase_order_number =v_po
         and purc_orde_status = 1;
         if v_count <> v_ctdel then -- ALl PO's Cancelled--
         v_action := 'U'; -- - NOT ALL PO DELETED --
         else
         v_action := 'D'; -- DELETED ALL PO--
         end if;
    else
         v_action := 'I';-- New PO INSERT--
    end if;
    commit;
    v_action_out := (lpad(v_count,8,'0')||lpad(v_action,1,' '));
    return v_action_out;
    end;
    and this is how I am calling it from my trigger which has to pass the v_bu and v_po values to be used in extracting data and returning the records
    see below
    if po_edi_func(v_bu,v_po) <> '' then;
    v_count:= (substr(v_action,1,8));
    v_action := substr(v_actione,9,1);
    else
    v_count:=0;
    v_action := 'I';
    end if;
    I need the extracted values of v_count and v_action for my app to reset some values

    What are the different types of parameters available in function builder and where do we use them.

    The different type of parameters available in FM are
    Import - They are used to pass the values to the function module.
    Export- They are used by FM to pass the result back to the calling program.
    Changing - The variables are passed to the FM and can be changed during the FM processing.
    Tables - Internal tables can be passed to the FM (it works similar to changing parameter).

  • HT204382 What do I need to down load to make Quick Time play different types of files, like mPeg etc?

    I'm new to this site and to my REfurbished 13" Mac Book Pro. I really love this note book! IO wish I had gotten the REtina Display now. I passed on it because It didn't have a lot of storage space. But what was I thinking....I don't want to fill this note book with hundreds of Albums and load my nearly 5000 photos onto it. I wouldn't want to slow it down by having to wait for it to load all the data everytime I turned it on.
    I tried to down load a file from a trusted friend, the Quick Time Player icon appeared in the Dock when I opened the down loadopened. Along with it, a message of sorts came up saying I need to download something else to make this file open/play. Any idea what I should get to make the Quick Time Player able to play more different types of files/clips?
    I'm just not so computer savy......like most of you.
    So, LOL.....could you please talk in simple language if you respond to me question?

    I understand that OUt parameter should not be used in funtions... Then I am eager to know, why oracle has provided the opton of OUT Parameter in funtion creation ? Hope you can explain that..This is an option is many languages.
    And there is valid use for it. PL/SQL however does not implement the full solution. An OUT parameter is essentially passing parameters by reference and not passing it by value.
    Passing by reference means passing a pointer to the function/procedure to the variable in the caller. This allows the function/procedure to directly reference the value in the caller.
    Passing by value means that the value from the variable in the caller is copied to the stack space of the function/procedure being called. The function/procedure thus has its own local copy of that value.
    That could be a performance and resource problem when the caller has a large data structure and the entire structure needs to be copied from the caller to the called procedure/function. In such a case it is a lot faster (and less memory needed) to simply pass a pointer to that structure to the function/procedure being called.
    And this is basically what an OUT parameter does - it allows PL/SQL code direct access to write into the variable of the calling code.
    In some cases you may have a large data structure, want to pass it by reference, but do not want the function/procedure being called to change it. You do not want to allow it modify your large data structure. You simply want to pass a pointer and allow read access to the function/procedure.
    In other languages, such a parameter is defined as a constant - as constants cannot be changed. So the parameter signature will look something like the following:
    create or replace function FooFunc( largeStruct CONSTANT IN OUT NOCOPY SomeDataType ) return SomeOtherDataType is ..And this is the only time that you should use an OUT parameter (passing by reference) in a function - when the function parameter is a large data structure. At the same time, the function is disallowed from changing that OUT parameter. It is passed as an OUT parameter simply to increase call performance and reduce memory requirements.
    PL/SQL unfortunately does not support this - allowing a value to be passed as a constant reference.
    As for why PL/SQL supports it the way it does - it does not mean that because PL/SQL supports OUT parameters for functions, it should be used. PL/SQL also supports the GoTo statement. Simply because it supports a specific feature does not mean that it is a good idea to use it.

  • Help needed - setting password policies for different types of accounts

    Hello,
    We have a situation where we have different types of users created on a solaris server. We have regular users, admins, functional accounts and device accounts. Of course solaris does not differentiate between regular user and other types, i think. The default password policy applies to all the users on the server. I want to configure different policy for different types of user accounts. Is it possible? The difference between the accounts on our side is
    Regular user accounts - 8 digit numbers ( 00667265) - expire password every 90 days
    Functional accounts - 8 digits starting with F ( F0253466) - do not expire, but password length must be 10-12 and complex
    Device Accounts - 8 digits starting with Z ( Z2367249) - do not expire, but password length must be 12 and complex - like upper case, lower case, number, special chars etc.
    Is it possible to set up different password policies, is so how?

    The password expiration policy is pretty easy, it can be set on a per account basis when the account is created. I'm not aware of a simple way to define a complexity policy for groups of accounts but the policy is enforced using pam, so you should be able to write a pam module which would enforce your complexity policy. The pam manual page would be a reasonable starting point for learning about pam.

  • DB  Adapter Calling DB Procedure that returns a Record Type

    I am trying to call a PL/SQL procedure that returns a Record Type and a VARCHAR2 and I'm getting this error:
    <Faulthttp://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/>
    <faultcode>env:Server</faultcode>
    <faultstring>java.sql.SQLException: ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'MY_PROC.GET_ID' ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PL/SQL: Statement ignored </faultstring> </Fault>
    Is there something different I need to do to handle the Record Type OUT parameter?
    Thanks.

    The adapter configuration wizard should take care of the Record Type for you. It should invoke JPublisher to create an equivalent Object type and a package containing a wrapper that will be called by the adapter runtime. The package also contains conversion functions for converting between your Record Type and the generated Object type. Maybe it would help if you posted the signature of your stored procedure (not the body).

  • This is a different type of the "wifi grayed out."

    This is a different type of the "wifi grayed out." My Iphone experiences the same problem that others have, the wifi becomes grayed out and I am unable to click it. However, after five or so days the wifi miraculously returns to full functionality, but then returns to grayed out again. I went to the Apple store, and they said I had water damage (i am skeptical) because my phone has been no where near water. I did the "freezer" trick that some mention, and that got it to work for a bit but not long. I am assuming that  it is a hardware problem and not software, since everything else works fine. I have a 4s on the latest ios. Can someone help me before the wifi turns gray again? I don't want to have to buy a new phone if needed.

    You need to follow the steps below:
    iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    If Apple have confirmed water damage then more than likely you will need to get a replacement.

    It has a list of the algorithms, which are pretty disappointing, I must say. No Random Forests? No ensembling methods? Given that it's using R algorithms, I must say this is a missed opportunity to beat products like SPSS and SAS at their own game. If SAP were to include this functionality, they would be the only BI vendor capable of having a serious predictive tool integrated with the rest of the platform.... but this looks pretty weak.
    I can only hope a later release will remedy this - or maybe the SDK will allow me to create what I need.
    As things stand, I could built a random forest using this tool, but I would have to use a lot of hardcoded SQL to make it happen. And if I wanted to go down that road, I could use the algorithms that come with the Microsoft/Oracle software.
    Please let me be wrong........
