A java technology to check host machine process

Question

Plz help me in telling whether with the java programming technology
Can i check the host client system process. I want to check the running of a particular exe on client machine?
Can i do it with java plugin or web start technology

under windows, you can do this :

import java.io.InputStreamReader;

               Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("tasklist");
               BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));

          } catch (Exception e) {
               e.printStackTrace();
}I think there is an equivalent in Unix/Linux
