A little hesitant

Just installed Win 7, updated the drivers manually after adding the Win 7 recognition fix and my SB X-Fi Platinum Fatality Champ seems to be working well enough.
After the reboot though it wanted to run an auto updater and install new drivers 2.8.3, current driver is listed as 6.0..373 after manually installing version 2.8.003. from creatives site; it also recommended that i install Vista updates...
Ive also read a few threads where people were having serious issues with the auto updater and Im wondering if its worth the risks to get a few bug updates for a few select games that I may not even play
thanks in advance

Absolutely not. If your system is working just the way it is, keep it that way. People often mistake an update for "absolutely necessary or your card will not function". If you are not having problems, leave it the way it is.
I just formatted my system with Windows 7 64 bit again. This time, I just installed the driver and let Creative Auto Updater pull in one or two things. I dont use MIDI anymore and I dont have digital speakers. Therefore, I have a pretty slim installation of Console Launcher, Diagnostics, and Volume panel.

  • Should I create a new iTunes account for a podcast?

We are still in the process of getting our first podcast edited and ready to go, along with the website, podcast hosting, etc... But I was curious about when we are ready to submit the podcast to iTunes.... Should I ceate a new iTunes account, dedicated to the podcast, or use my own personal iTunes account to submit. I'm a little hesitant about using my own, since I'm not sure how that affects anything in how the podcast is displayed, or notifications from iTunes. I would rather have communications go through the E-Mail for the domain I have set up for the website/podcast, but it's not the end of the world.
If it's used strictly for authentication, then it most likely won't be an issue. I just wanted to verify how it is used, and best practices, before submitting our first episode.
    Thanks,
    Mike

It is just for authentication - no need to create a new account for your podcast.
Just submit with the one you already have.
Any changes to your show in iTunes are managed via your RSS feed - not from your iTunes account.

  • Moving from Exchange 2007 to 2013 (leaving the DNS Server for it's own dedicated server)

Hello! I am quite new to Exchange and Server management in general. I will do my best to explain my situation.
I am looking to move my Exchange server off of our DNS server. When we installed them on the same server, we did not have the funds to buy 2 separate servers. I am told that it is best to separate the two. I have followed the Microsoft instructions for installing
the prerequisites for Exchange 2013 on a 2012 R2 server, and i am at the point where it wants me to configure AD LDS. As I have active directory running on the current server, I was a little hesitant to just install it without understanding what i am doing.
After the AD LDS is configured, I believe i can move forward with installing Exchange 2013 (all 3 roles will be hosted on the new server), export the mailboxes from 2007 server and import them into the new Exchange 2013 server. After 2013 is up and stable,
I plan on removing 2007 from the old server (DNS server).
What are my next steps after importing the mailboxes? Am i missing important details that I need to change or migrate?
My biggest fear is that nothing works after the installation and moving the mailboxes over. For that case, it makes sense to keep 2007 installed as a fallback for when my installation fails and all i have lost is just my time :)
    Current Server:
Windows Server 2008 Standard (64 bit)
    1. Roles: Active Directory, DNS, IIS
    2. Software: Exchange 2007
    New Server:
    Windows 2012 R2 Server
    1. Roles: ???
    1. Software to install: Exchange 2013
Thank you for any help you can provide!

These are good resources, but i am still caught up with the active directory issue.  Am I able to keep the old Domain/DNS/Active directory on it's current server and move Exchange 2007 off onto a new server (with Exchange 2013)?
In the first example, he is moving everything (domain controller, exchange, users, etc) onto a different server and decommissioning it.I've been told that it would be better practice to keep the domain and exchange on 2 different servers. Is this true?
I go to run commands like:
    .\setup /PrepareAD /OrganizationName: orgname /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
on the new exchange server, as a prerequisite and it doesnt recognize the command - even after following the steps before. Is this because the new server is not a domain controller? does it have to be? What are the best practices for setting up a server(s)
    with exchange + domain controller?
    Thanks for responding.

  • Authentication freezing occasionally in OD

We're having problems with our two Xserve G4s which are both running OS X Tiger Server 10.4.6. Call the first server "filesrvr" and the other "mailsrvr" (which in addition to mail also provides web and file sharing services). Both are running behind a firewall with mailsrvr on a DMZ visible to the Internet. The filesrvr is the DNS and OD Master, and the mailsrvr a DNS slave and OD replica. The mailsrvr is operating in a beta capacity at the moment while we address these problems.
As far as I can tell, the DNS and basic aspects of OD are working correctly: both systems have proper forward and reverse local DNS names, and the hostname is being set correctly on both systems. We had problems with a prior incarnation of the servers because DNS and OD were set up in a funny way and in the wrong order: this led to all sorts of lookupd-related crashes, but the servers have been wiped clean since and carefully rebuilt from scratch. We haven't seen anything that looks like the prior problem and both servers are much more stable now.
That being said, there still appear to be two problems, both on the mail server side. Any suggestions would help:
    1) Every few days, OD-related authentication freezes up for a period of time. Sometimes it will come back on its own within fifteen or twenty minutes, at other times we must do a hard restart to reset the problem. The affected services are: Tiger Server Admin (port 311), SMTP, POP3, IMAP, SSH, AFP, SMB, and FTP. Console logins are also rejected during these periods. I'll supply details for what I think is happening here with log listings.
    2) Several times a day (say two to three times a day), the Tiger Server Admin (servermgrd on port 311) becomes non-responsive. It doesn't matter whether you run the Server Admin client application locally on the Tiger Server, or via another machine. It also doesn't seem to matter if you have an active session already running or not. It just seems to cut in and out on its own. The good news is that usually within ten minutes it always comes back up on its own. I don't find anything in the logs related to servermgrd during these outages. I also don't see anything 'funny' about the instance of servermgrd running at the time.
I'm not sure if these two problems are related. The authentication issue seems more serious since it affects the availability of mail service to our users which needs to be up and running at all times.
I'll supply details below, but the bottom line is that I suspect memberd and/or lookupd (or something they both depend on -- like the NetInfo database) is not working quite right. I've been reading up on postings related to these two daemons and wonder what would be an appropriate course of attack.
In <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=492829>, one recommendation is to run "/sbin/fsck -y" in safe mode looking for any problems, and then to manually rebuild the NetInfo database. Obviously memberd and lookupd depend on their caches and the databases they make use of to be in working order. The suggestion is to check for file system issues and rebuilt the NetInfo database.
In <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=132009> the recommended course of action is to flush the memberd cache using "sudo memberd -r" from time to time (elsewhere it is suggested to do this once an hour via a crontab entry, and also to issue a "/usr/sbin/lookupd -flushcache"). The idea here is to make sure the caches are kept fairly fresh.
I'm a bit torn about how to attack this problem -- it seems a no-brainer to:
    1) Run Disk Utility "Verify Disk" and "Verify Permissions" checks on filesrvr and mailsrvr.
    2) Run "/sbin/fsck -y" on filesrvr and mailsrvr until no problems are reported.
    3) Insert the following line into the root user's crontab to clear out the memberd and lookupd caches once an hour:
    @hourly /usr/sbin/memberd -r; /usr/sbin/lookupd -flushcache
I'm a little hesitant to rebuild the NetInfo database right now. There's a number of special accounts defined there that will simply be a pain to rebuild. My thinking is that I'll make the three changes above and stop just short of rebuilding NetInfo. If authentication fails again on mailsrvr in a similar way then I'll run the Disk Utility and fsck fixes again but also go one step further and rebuild NetInfo.
Does anyone have thoughts for other things to try?
    <details>
We've seen the first type of failure (authentication stops working) four times in the past two weeks, and it's happened in a number of different ways. Here are some of the details, with log snippets (the only interesting activity is in /var/log/system.log):
The first time authentication stopped working was on June 6th at about 3:15am. I happened to be awake at the time working on something else -- checking for mail periodically but otherwise not logged onto mailsrvr. We use InterMapper to probe all of the server ports and make login checks, and I received a flurry of failures (on the ports listed above). The system had been running without incident for about 36 hours since the last reboot, with only a few mail users accessing the system plus InterMapper's probes every two minutes or so, and not much else going on. In the logs (below), it's clear that the original memberd daemon (process 55) exited abnormally. Launchd created a new instance of memberd (process 23431) which stayed up about eleven minutes before it also crashed. Launchd fired up one more instance of memberd (process 23901), which then stayed up for several days until we took it down for a backup. It was when this final instance of memberd came up that authentication started working again. I also verified that I could not log in via SSH while authentication services were down.
Here's a log snippet (I've omitted log entries which are clearly part of normal operations -- like Cyrus's checkpointing of the mail database every thirty minutes and InterMapper's probes):
Jun 6 03:13:44 mailsrvr memberd[55]: Fatal error -1 submitting to kernel (1: Operation not permitted)\n
Jun 6 03:13:44 mailsrvr memberd[23431]: memberd starting up
Jun 6 03:15:18 mailsrvr sshd[23399]: fatal: Timeout before authentication for <<my IP address>>
Jun 6 03:24:34 mailsrvr memberd[23431]: Fatal error -1 submitting to kernel (1: Operation not permitted)\n
    Jun 6 03:24:34 mailsrvr launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/memberd -x"[23431]: exited with status: 1
Jun 6 03:24:34 mailsrvr memberd[23901]: memberd starting up
On June 12th, we suffered a similar failure. All of the authentication-based services listed above suddenly stopped responding. At the time, I had an open SSH connection running on root@mailsrvr, looking into unrelated issues, so while authentication was down I probed around a bit. I noticed right off that there was nothing funny in the logs as before -- no smoking gun indicating the memberd daemon. In fact, there was nothing in the logs to indicate that there was any problem at all!
However, I noticed from my bash session that if I did an "ls", the shell would list files without problem, but if I did an "ls -l", the command would hang until I issued a CTRL+C. I surmised that the reverse lookup of the user ID or group ID wasn't working correctly, either because memberd or lookupd or something deep in the system related to user or group names wasn't running right. Since this hangup occurred during business hours, it was necessary to restart the server to get it back online ASAP, so unfortunately I couldn't spend more time investigating the state of the system.
The next glitch occurred on June 14th. Once again, all of the authentication-based services when down. The only spurious entry in our logs was related to servermgrd (which provides service on the Tiger Server port 311). I don't think this daemon was the cause of the problem, but an indicator that something else was going on at the time. At the time of the failure (about 16:02), we were receiving FTP probes from mainland China (a host at 219.136.191.93) at intervals of 75 seconds or so to keep under the radar. I also don't think this was the cause of the problem. By 16:10 the problem had cleared itself up without my interaction or the need to restart the server.

Since June 15th we've been running without incident, I'm happy to report. It's possible that the failures have been related to periods in which a number of changes have been made to the LDAP and NetInfo databases via Workgroup Manager. I'm going to keep a log from now on to see if there's a correlation there. Since June 15th, we've made only minimal changes.

  • Help with EJB 3.0 MEssage Driver Bean Wizard in NetBeans 5.5 preview

I am using NetBeans 5.5 preview with sun apps server 9.0 .
But I am not able to write message driver beans .
Can anybody help in this regards

Russ thanks for checking back. I did try the prefernce manager but no luck there. I ended up downloarding promaintance as a trail and ran thier error code analysis. http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
So I found that the reason it wouldn't open was that there was a missing framework. I don't know much about frameworks but I do know that when I ran digital rebelions fcp uninstaller it removed this framework. When I reinstalled fcp studio this framework was not reinstalled, even after running all of the proap updates. Consequently I found that my aperature program was affected by this framework as well and wouldn't open. I ended up having to copy the framework off of a another computer and pasting it into the appropriate folder on my Mac Pro.
Viola, compressor now will launch at least and so will apperture. The problem still remains though that I can not ad custom destinations in Compressor with out it crashing. Another thing is that compressor will only quit if I forced quit it. I have tried uninstalling and reintalling FCP studio 4 times now with the same results. After that frameworks fiasco I am a little hesitant to mess with it any more for fear of messing up any other application.
pretty bummed on my set up right now.

  • Blu-ray creation on Mac? Surely so....

I'll try to ask this in a very straight forward way - I'm not looking for any step by step instructions, just general advice, and links to any other appropriate and knowledgeable sites or articles will be greatly appreciated.
I'm using a recent, fast 27 in iMac (March 2010), core i7 processor with 8 gigs of ram, OSX 10.6.5. Currently having great success with CS4 versions of PPro and Encore, having good luck burning SD DVDs. Am shooting 720p footage with a Canon T2i, and have been able to produce nice looking down-sampled DVDs (thanks to reading other forum discussions on here on the topic, with a great link to an excellent tutorial specific to CS4 PPro.)
I just bought the CS5 upgrade to everything, but honestly am a little hesitant to install it just yet. I've been offered a "dirt simple" (I know - famous last words) video job for a client and think I should probably stay with a workflow that I know works. They only want a <10 min DVD that will continuously loop on a small LCD-TV at the back of a trade show booth - so my widescreen DVD process, down from 720p HD, works fine, even better than I expected.
But it makes me want to try to produce true Blu-rays disks, especially since I'm so impressed with what Canon DSLRs can shoot, and PPro handles the format so easily -  I understand it does an even better job in CS5.
So here finally is my question(s) - I'm looking for an external Blu-ray burner that will connect to this iMac via Firewire, and can be written to by the Mac version of Encore, CS5. Surely this is all possible - right??  I've seen lots of internal units intended mainly for windows, and I think one possibly discontinued internal for Mac Pros.
So - is there such a beast - an external Firewire burner for Mac?  And - will Encore CS5 for Mac be able to produce a simple Blu-ray disk (a simple menu with buttons, no extra features or 3d or anything extravagant)?  And is Toast a better or lesser option?  I do fully realize that OSX cannot play a Blu-ray disk, so I know I'll need a true Blu-ray player hooked up to an HDTV.
    THANKS for any advice!

Any external Blu-ray burner should work on Mac. Talk to these people:
    http://www.macsales.com/
I bought two external and two internal drives from them for my company's Macs. No drivers included or needed.
    Regards,
    Larry

  • How do I delete and then re-download my library.

Over the last three years I have been downloading songs from iTunes mostly from my phone.  This works fine 99% of the time, however, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of songs in my library that I have paid for and "downloaded" yet they will not play more than half way through.  Some albums have half, or nearly all of the songs cut off, and other albums will only have one song that is cut off.  They seem to be completely random occurances, and the one time I singled an album out and tried to delete then download it again, the same songs kept reloading cut off, no matter how many times I tried.  The songs appear in the library just like they should, in the right order and everything, and like I said they will play something, but never more than half of the song, and most of the time it's just the opening or a few seconds and then nothing.  If I scroll out the track to the part that gets cut, it just jumps me to the next song.  The genuis told me to delete my linrary and then re-download it, yet I am a little hesitant as I have no real way of knowing I'll get it back.  Is there a specific proceedure for people with my issue, or some kind of iTunes/Library reset i could trigger?  Any ideas?  Thank you.

    Hi, Strayor.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
To verify what you have purchased with your Apple ID, see the steps in the article below.  It will give you the option to view all purchases or what is not in your library.
Downloading past purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
The best option would be to just delete only the problematic media verses the whole library and just download what is missing.  However, to delete all of your music you would select a song in your music library and select Command+A.  From there you would hit the delete key.
How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5772
I would recommend making a backup of your media library as a precaution.  Here are the steps on how to process these steps.

  • What are the advantages of using Hyper-V's synthetic drivers with Linux VMs?

We are moving our virtualization platform from Citrix's XenServer to Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. As part of this project I need to migrate, in one form or another, some Debian Linux servers over to Hyper-V. I have successfully built a Debian-based
server on our new Hyper-V platform and I'm beginning to test it.
Debian 6 (Squeeze) uses the 2.6.32 kernel which includes the Hyper-V synthetic drivers, but it is not considered a supported operating guest operating system by Microsoft. I'm a little hesitant in trying to use them unless there's a compelling reason to,
as other folks have had trouble
What advantages do the Hyper-V synthetic drivers offer over the emulated drivers?
For those of you who have experience with the Xen hypervisor, is using the synthetic drivers analgous to para-virtualizing a guest operating system?
Are then any noteworthy dangers or drawbacks of NOT using the synthetic drivers?
Why should I bother to either a) deal with the reported instability of the Hyper-V drivers currently in the kernel, b) try to build a newer kernel, or c) try to make the Virtual Machine Additions work with a distribution
they weren't designed for when everything seems to "just work"?

The synthetic drivers 'talk' more directly to the actual hardware, bypassing most of the hypervisor (for common data operations). This dramatically cuts down on the hypervisor overhead related to most network activity.
If your server doesn't communicate much on the network, or if your hardware is well undercommitted, you should be fine with the emulated drivers. There's definitely a performance penalty for doing this however.

  • Selective Recovery from iPhone BackUp

I mistakenly deleted an important note in the notes application of my iPhone. I had backed up the iPhone in (iTunes for PC); however, I only want to recover the content of notes.  Everything else is outdated. Is there a way I can either see the content of notes on the PC or recover only the content of the notes app to my iPhone?

Again, this was my original reply, which for some reason had vanished from the replies posted here!
You could use a backup recovery software to view the data you have in the backup, and choose not to restore to the old backup while still having access to view and use the data backed up.
I would personally recommend Total Saver as I use it quite often to clean things up from my iPhone and backup data to my PC. You can get notes, contacts, photos, videos, texts and a few more details using that app
I am a little hesitant to backup data to iCloud for 3 reasons :-
All my data (including contacts and texts, which are very personal) are stored somewhere on which I don't have any control and ofcourse now we all know that Uncle Sam gets all of the data!
If a device has not backed up to iCloud for a period of one hundred and eighty (180) days, Apple reserves the right to delete the backups associated with that device! So I need to keep wasting my bandwidth very often to keep backing up my iPhone to iCloud. 1 minute videos that my iPhone 5 saves for over 150Mb of disk space are really going to eat all of that bandwidth. This is mentioned in the terms and conditions agreement http://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/en/terms.html
    It does not backup everything

  • 2001 Quicksilver G4/867 (M8360LL/A) "locks up"

Upon purchasing a 2008 Mac Pro last year, I delegated my 2001 Quicksilver G4/867 that I use on my home network to the roles of a personal mail server (5-account DoveCot IMAP and Postfix SMTP), ssh-publickey-authenticated server, limited afp file server (only a 60GB HD for five users), with limited (single user) screen sharing access, printer server, fax server, and phone logger/voice mail server. Oh, and it runs Snort network intrusion detection software, too.
So it's a busy computer. I have, however, been recently experiencing computer crashes. I personally observed the kernel crash screen once during these recent times, but usually, the screen is black by the time I am able to get to the computer to "fix" it, I presume because although I don't let the computer CPU sleep, I do allow the screen (and hard drive, when possible) to sleep. In order to recover from these computer freezes, a hard power-down is required. I follow this by a cold-boot into single-user mode. After at least two executions of /sbin/fsck -fy and a final reboot, all is back up and running again ‑‑ at least for awhile.
A review of the console message log after the most recent crash yielded the following suspect entries:

    7/8/09 08 Jul 2009 17:13:38 kernel Darwin Kernel Version 9.7.0: Tue Mar 31 22:54:29 PDT 2009; root:xnu-1228.12.14~1/RELEASE_PPC (O.P. note: this is reboot after execution of /sbin/fsck ‑fy in single-user mode following hard power-down)
There are no applicable crash reporter logs or panic reporter logs or hang reporter logs created during these time periods.
My questions: does this message log suggest a hard drive that needs to be replaced? Or failure of another replaceable component and if so, what might be some likely suspects? Any other suggested hints for troubleshooting such as run off my clone drive (I've been a little hesitant about cloning the main drive since I wasn't sure if some sort of file corruption on the main drive might be the culprit)?

The computer failed to shut down last night (it's getting up in years, so I figure it needs its beauty rest for a few hours before starting another 19-hour day).
Cold reboot following yet another hard powerdown was very difficult, and I could not boot up into single-user mode. There was another "bus blocking" nastygram and single-user mode bootup stalled immediately thereafter. Another hard powerdown and cold bootup into multi-user mode was very slow, but I eventually was able to log into an administrator account. Tried to launch Console.app and Disk Utility.app and stalled with a spinning pinwheel of death and listening to a hard drive thrash about.
I unplugged the drives one by one to see if it would boot. Trying to boot off of my backup clone drive failed. With the backup clone drive unplugged (it is the 8-yr-old OEM drive, by the way, with at least the 1st 5 yrs being the primary drive), the computer booted up fine in both single-user and multi-user modes. No "bus blocking" nastygram in single-user mode.
Several executions of /sbin/fsck ‑fy cleaned up the newer Seagate. Didn't check the console log after multi-user restart; I'll see how it behaves over the next several days. Hopefully, I'll get off easy and only need to replace that old IBM drive ‑‑ they're pretty cheap now that SATA and SSD are all the new rage.
I think my plan will be to live without "server-lite" backup for a few days and see how the old Quicksilver behaves; if it behaves over the next several days, I'll buy a new drive for bootable backup then see if it continues to play well with others. I'll post back in a couple of several days with a report on that.
Then all I'll need to do is figure out what kind of screwdriver I need in order to get those ✸☢☣⚡♨♠❦ screws out that are holding that ✸☢☣⚡♨♠❦ drive bay in place. It's not a Phillips head style of screw and it's not a Torx-head style of screw, either.
Oh, and thanks for that link to the Apple Hardware Test CD. After eight years, I have no clue where mine has gone. I'll post back with how that works out, too.

  • [Solved] Changed Graphics Driver/Xorg.conf, Font Size Now Different

    Hello,
I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf.  I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository.  I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

Thanks a bunch for any suggestions, xorg.conf can be a bit confusing for me.

What are you using to login?
if it's startx, you can do startx -- -dpi 96
if it's a login manager, you'll need to edit it's configuration and set it otherwise.
Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm starting slim as a daemon at bootup inside /etc/rc.conf, then using XFCE4.

  • XMP metadata for Photo Libraries

I demo lightroom at shows for Adobe and one of the constant gripes I get, and spend a long time trying to convince punters I have no answer for, is that Lightroom doesn't interact at all well with some of the software that photo libraries use. I have never had any exposure to such applications, but I recall one being called Photo Suite.
Apparently the problem is metadata captions do not travel well from Lightroom back to these Photo Library apps. So I have just had a load of photographers over the last few days come to me complaining that they have captioned images in Lightroom, but the captions have not been captured in such a way that they can be read by these library apps.
Can anybody make this happen for these people supplying photos to the libraries, because I feel that suppliers are a little hesitant to use Lightroom fully unless it improves. I can't shed much more light on it than this as I have no experience of any Photo Library software.

I'm not so sure that a lot of image libraries are prepared to ditch their library software. My understanding of it is that the photographers who have the library software - and there seems to be a number of them - are being forced to use the image library software by the image library they are submitting their shots to. If captions aren't being retained, then the shots they are submitting are being rejected by the libraries which is obviously causing a loss of income. Something that causes me a loss of income doesn't get used.
So, by the lack of communication and updating of captions between the apps, photographers are being held back, and I get the feeling the photographers would very much like to use LR and know it is without fail compatible with the image library software.
These captions and changes are apparently being recognised by PSCS3, but not lightroom, so where does the fault lie?

adobe starter edition has photo numbers by the picture such as DSCO0283.JPG , where can I find that number on the pictures in PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12--reason being that photoshop elements will not convert my catalog to version 12. If i had that number I could manually rebuild my collections into the photoshop elements 12, but all that i see in photoshop elements is dates and i have multiple pictures from the same dates. HELP! finally getting back to this project---adobe starter edition 3.2 is on a windows XP computer
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12 is on our Windows 8.1 computer.
error messages--- had to give up trying to convert---I copied all our pictures to our windows 7 laptop and I installed adobe photoshop elements 12 (my bought program)
I wanted to try to convert there first. also I copied our catalog to this computer also. Everything was working fine I could see the collections just as they where on the XP computer.
then I tried to convert on the laptop. I believe the error said something about corrupt file, so I gave up that day. Next day I tried to open ADOBE STARTER EDITION 3.2  and it wanted an unlock code, no such code exists. and my copy of Elements 12 turned into a trial version which has expired. So I am a little hesitant to try to convert on the XP  computer and mess up the existing catalog,
unless there is a fool proof way. I have tried manually making collections/ albums on Windows 8.1 and PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12  and coping pictures into the new albums. sloooow!!
I probably have about 4500 pictures and 150 collections/ albums to go. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • ITunes 7.0.1.8 / xp --- love/hate relationship with seamless playback

I always hated the artificial gaps between tracks, so I was really excited when I heard about seamless playback. That's the main reason I upgraded iTunes. The problem is that seamless playback seems to really hog system resources on my pc. Since it is typically a second or so between tracks it wasn't a huge deal to me. Other than the resource issue it worked fine. Well, today I'm listening to Odelay by Beck. The last track on the album is Ramshackle and the main part of the song runs about four minutes or so... followed by about two minutes of silence... and then a bunch of noise which concludes the track and the album. The total track length is 7:29. During the silent two minutes the CPU usage on my pc suddenly jumped to 100% and basically froze my pc for two minutes. This is unacceptable. Has anything been done in iTunes 7.0.2 to rectify this? I'm a little hesitant to upgrade again, so if this is still an issue I'll probably hold off.
    Thanks.

    Hey mmartin123,
How is this issue affected if Crossfade Playback is turned on
Here is more information on Gapless playback
    Hope this helps,

  • Video Podcasts show up as Music

    Here is my problem:
I downloaded a couple video podcasts from iTMS and copied them to my ipod. They play fine in iTunes, but on my ipod they dont show up anywhere in the video section, only in the music section. When I 'get info' within iTunes they both show as 'Movie' in the Movie Kind field. I am using iTunes version 6.0.2.23 (Windows), Cd Driver 2.0.43, Cd Driver DLL 2.0.3.2, Ipod Video 30G, Version 1.0.
    Now for some additional info...
When I am transfering the video to the ipod, I am doing this manually because I use both my home and work machines with my ipod.
Here are some things I have tried:
I first attempted to download the video podcasts using iTMS on my work machine with the result being that the videos showing up under my music and not showing up under video anywhere.
I downloaded a video (not using iTMS) on my work machine and then imported it into the library and then manually copied it to my ipod and it worked just fine.
I attempted to 'Convert The Selection For Ipod' within iTunes (again work machine) for the iTMS downloaded video podcasts and it tells me that the files were not converted because they are already in the correct format. I am wondering if the problem is somehow related to the fact that these files have been downloaded through the podcast subscription? I cant see any reason why, but just throwing some things out there.
I attempted to download the video podcasts using iTMS on my home machine with the same results. As a last effort at this time, I tried the transfer again, and left it to transfer overnight.
Using a different computer (not work or home) I rebuilt Windows XP Pro from scratch. The only thing installed was service pack 2, then installed the same version of iTunes (6.0.2.23) and had a slightly different experience. One of the podcasts in questions did the exact same thing, that is showing up under music and no video playing. The other podcast however ended up showing up and played fine. Now my problem is I dont know if the new machine transferred it correctly or if it was transferred correctly from my home machine the night before (I overlooked checking it before attempting the transfer on the new machine.) I have since then attempted to transfer the problem file on the new machine and it failed again.
Now, has anyone managed to experience and resolve this issue? I know that I should update the ipod to 1.1 and try again, but since I have read about all of the problems with video on the new version I am a little hesitant to do that. Anyone have any suggestions on what ot try next, or am I going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade the ipod?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob
Ipod Video 30G Version 1.0   Windows XP Pro

OK, tried some new things, here is the latest update:
I went ahead and bit the bullet, upgraded to 1.1. Deleted the video files from the music section of the ipod and then attempted to manually transfer the files. Still, the same symptoms occured.
Next step, performed a restore on the ipod (using the latest updater (thus retaining version 1.1), then set the ipod to sync with itunes on the work machine. Videos uploaded fine, show up in the Videos section and even play as videos on the ipod! Now we are getting somewhere.
Once I arrived home, I plugged the ipod into my home machine, told it yes, that I wanted to delete the content and attach the ipod to itunes on my home machine. Once all my music downloaded to the ipod, I subscribed to the video podcasts, they downloaded, then I synced the ipod, and they show up in the video section and play as videos. Everything seems to work fine!
My next step will be to disable auto sync and manually add some video podcasts to the ipod and see if it will function then. I will update the thread once that is complete.
