A major pain

First of all I really do have a love hate relaitionship with this phone it has some really cool features but some stuff really ******* me off:
1. My phone has 24 gb of free space and when I try syncing just 4.8gb I keep telling me it not able to sync because there's no free space. Ok,no problem so I tried syncing different selections, not syncing my music folder and even restoring . Still the problem persist.
2 The AppStore is a pain to contact: I have an especially annoying progam ( BEEJIVE) keeps crashing , sticking and all sorts of behavior even though they keep making updates.. ****** me off because I paid around $10 for it . Atleast a letter to support got answered . Which I was told to refer to the AppStore, I have absolutely no idea how to contact them.
3 So one of my favorite songs is now availabe on iTunes as a ringtone and I decided to purchase it from my phone and it works. HOoRAY!!!!!! Until I have to sync my phone, the ring tone is no where to be found (that's $1.29 + tax) so I went to iTunes to see what would happen if I try buying this ring tone again, it actually tells me that I've bought it already but if I'd like to buy it again. Hilarious !!!
HELP PLEASE ANYONE... : ( : (

I don't use NoScript, and no, I'm not confusing Java with JavaScript. (I know Java a lot better than I know JavaScript.)
The toggle (javascript.enabled) in about:config was turned to false.
I've had to download the full version of Firefox from the website on the last two upgrade cycles because the install on my iMac says it thinks it's being tricked into downloading a potentially malicious version.
Both times, the install toggled JS off. All other preferences, including open tabs, were kept.
Is this mistrust issue the root cause?
Did I not get a proper certificate update or something?
I have a coworker who told me he has the same issue.

  • Need multiple 'MAIL' Icons.   Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain

Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain the butt.  This has been a request from Apple users for many years.    it's great you can now combine all emails into one, but some people want them kept separate and have separate icons on the main page.   They could easily do this by having one "MAIL" account as white and another red.  Or put MAIL 1 and MAIL 2.    Or an actual label that the mail accounts are called on the ICONS!!
    Help!

...I could switch back and forth between accounts while in the mailbox, with one button.  I think that is what you are referring to?  Whoever said it's just a simple switching - you obviously haven't had the pleasure of using an Android device.  It's not that quick to go back and forth - definitely not efficient...
Not that it matters a lot, Android vs iPhone interface is largely a matter of personal preference and what you know... I'm not sure which one you're saying is not efficient...
    In any event...
I currently have two email accounts setup.  My iPhone main page Mailbox settings reads:
    Mailboxes
    Inboxes
    All Inboxes
    Gmail
    [email protected]
    Accounts
    Gmail
    [email protected]
I wish there an efficient way to move back and forth while in the "Inbox" between accounts.  Also, Why does one gmail account show as "Gmail" and another as the actually address?
The names are based on the names you gave the accounts when you set them up.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account you want to re-name. Go to the "Description" field and put in what ever you want.
Second, there is no way to quickly choose a bunch of emails to delete. I have to manually go into each one and move it to the Trash folder.
If you tap the edit button in the upper right while in mail, you can select multiple items to move, delete or mark (flag).
I don't want any of the condescending remarks, that I've read here and in other forums.  I'm honestly looking for a solution, which I think you are too!  One thing I realized is that iPhone users in these forums are really defensive and quick to say "that's how it is, live with it, if you don't like it go away"  Um...the only thing that tells me is you are pretty bitter and have kept telling yourself that, to force yourself to like your device.  I prefer to express my issues, and find solutions.  There is ALWAYS a solution...
I think what you will find is that many people here, myself included, tend to get a bit short with people who start off with attacks or whining about how something has been asked for for years and should be easy, rant about things that have already been beaten to death multiple times in the forums, talk about how much better Android or BB are at something (really... if it's that much better, why did they buy an iPhone to begin with?), etc., or continue to ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search, or even just by looking back at the last dozen posts to the forum, half of which probably asked the EXACT SAME question.
I don't think any of us go out of our way to be rude or uncivil.  That said, attacking the people who are attempting to help you is much more likely to generate a response of 'if you don't like it, go away', than it is to generate something that will be truly helpful.

  • External Harddrive + Large Music Library + I Tunes = Major Pain

Why oh why? I am a pretty smart fellow. My family has 3 iphones that I can keep going pretty well. I have never figured out iTunes though. I keep a library of 17,000 songs on an external drive. I have configured iTunes every which way and according to every variable imaginable in regards to where it looks for songs and how it stores new songs. No matter what it duplicates my library. I just re-imaged my pc, installed a new copy of iTunes and it duplicated the songs again. Then I found where it ignored my telling it to use the external and it started storing new songs on C: drive again. ***. I don't want to go pay for another app to clean up duplicates that iTunes creates. And I don't want to go through and select the right version of 17,000 duplicated songs. Please, please Apple, can't you build this thing so it will simply read a music library without causing me to pull my hair out?

Go into itunes preferences and click on the advanced tab. There you should un-check 'copy files to itunes library'. If you dont then it will always duplicate your library taking up extra space on your HDD.
Also under the same advanced tab change the location of your itunes library to point to your external HD. This is done at the top of that window where it states itines music folder location.

  • The user name password pair complexity has reached brand switching proportions. It has become a major pain to use my iphone/ipad.

I have two pages of passwords. Apples fault. Simplify or eliminate password rules?

Not Apple's fault.  Your fault for not using a simple system.
Create a SINGLE complex password.  Use a random character generator if you need to.
Then, at the end of that password, add the first two letters of the service/account/application (gm for Gmail, eb for Ebay, etc.)
Then add a number to the end of that password.
i.e. 'Asits9gm01' for my Gmail. 'Asits9eb05' for Ebay.  And then I only have to remember: one password, my system, and the number I'm on for each account.  When prompted to update a password?  Just increase the number by 1.
    Work smarter, not unsmarter.

  • Major change to previews in 3.5?

Ok did I miss the memo or have I been in front of the computer for to long?
For another post here I started looking into previews and started seeing some different  behavior between 3.5 and earlier versions This sound crazy but I don;t think Aperture is using the Preview folder and its contents anymore.
The first hint came with the wording in the Previews Preference for sharing. It is no longer share the preview but share the XML. Then I try dragging an image out of Aperture which always resulted in a small file size depending on the Previews setting in Preferences. With 3.5 I am seeing full sized files when I drag out regardless of the preview setting.
Then I started deleting previews which caused the preview file to be removed from the library but when I regenerate the preview no new file appears in the Previews folder. In addition even after deleting the preview when you select update preview Aperture reports the preview is up-to-date. This after it was deleted.
Finally I deleted the whole preview folder, Aperture didn't burp or regenerate the folder either.
This is with managed originals. Haven't tried it yet with referenced originals off-line. That should be interesting.
Can someone else look at this and let me know if I need a long vacation

I'm cross posting to this thread to see if others are noticing the same behavior as me.
The biggest kerfuffle is the full size images coming out of the media browser in other apps, as noted below.
Without forcing Aperture to create a new preview by slightly adjusting the image, Aperture serves up a full size master file in other applications using media browser or in Drag-and-Drop.  Most unfortunate!!!
For years I've been organizing my library in Aperture, and dragging thumbnails to the desktop for quick PDFs and 1-off emails.
This worked with RAW images AND .PSD files, adjusted or un-adjusted. I would always drag out a preview .jpg version of the image to the desktop.
In ver 3.5, when I drag a managed PSD file's thumbnail to the desktop, it copies the full PSD file!
If I make any adjustment to the file, even adjusting exposure and then re-settting it to 0, then the image preview will be transferred, but for straight files, it copies the Master to the desktop.
I've tried updating previews, deleting and re-generating previews to no avail. All preferences are identical, and when I switch back to my older library, the previews drag correctly. It's just the new library, created with the newest version of Aperture, that seems to work incorrectly.
I say "incorrectly" because Apple documentation states that the preview should be copied, not the original.
UPON FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION.. I realize that the original Master PDF is being used as the share between iPhoto, Mail, etc. When I drag from the Media Browser in Mail, I get the full PDF, not a Preview.
Major pain, in my opinion, and I wonder if anyone at Apple realizes that the full file is being shared.

  • Major instability with Network Magic for Mac

First of all, I'm a long time LELA user which has been great for quickly gaining an understanding of what is connected to the network.  I like being able to see both connected and disconnected devices.
I thought I would give Network Magic a shot since that is where the future direction is headed.  It has great potential but right now is a major pain in the rear.  I have a rather large home network with roughly 15 devices connected or disconnected at any given time.  At first the network map worked like LELA in that it would show all devices disconnect or connected.  I have two Mac laptops that have different IP and MAC addressses depending on whether they are connected via wired or wireless.
After installing the Mac client on both Mac laptops that's when the frustration began.  It seems that with the Mac client software running on both Macs NM5.5 only wants to recognize one on the map at a time.  Every few minutes I get an alert that a new device has been detected.  But what really happens is the existing laptop drops off the map and the other will pop on.  On the Mac itself it automatically triggers the Network Magic screen to popup which is a major annoyance.  A few minutes will go by and then the process repeats itself.  This laptop will drop of the network map and the other will pop back on.  Again, this pops up the Network Magic window on the 2nd laptop which is an annoyance.
Furthermore, when one laptop drops off the... printers that are shared from another Windows PC are no longer available and accessible on the Mac.  Rest assured... waiting another few minutes the process will repeat itself.
The other major downside is after installing the Mac clients the network map only shows the name of the Mac laptop and is always recognized as one device regardless of IP or MAC address.  I no longer have two seperate IP/MAC devices showing on the map depending on whether it is a wired or wireless connection.    I cannot look at the map and quickly know whether the device is connected via wire or wireless.  Thus when I print a hard copy of all my network devices and settings I dont' get to see the MAC address and details for the non-connected MAC/IP.
Finally, the Mac client does not have the ability to "generate daily computer reports" of the usage.
At this point I am forced to uninstall the Mac clients until a solution for this problem is provided.  I'm glad I checked out the trial version first!

Also for the Linksys folks... I'm not sure how all of the below information is relevant but if it gets you to resolve the problems and add the necessary features then great:

  • Pain points with the iPhone 3G

    Hi,
This is partially a rant, mostly due to frustrations with the device of things that I cannot do with it, and perhaps someone can help me with a few issues.
To provide some background, I purchased the iPhone 3G the week after it was released, and I really like most of the features on the device; however, there have been some noticeable holes with it, that have really lowered my opinion of the device, and depending on whether some of my problems get resolved, Apple as a whole.
A couple months ago, my Windows XP desktop computer which had my entire media library crashed, and the Windows Recovery completely wiped the hard drive. I had not backed up a good portion of my purchased songs at the time, and due to troubles I was having, switched the PC to running Linux. This has caused some major pain for me, as Apple does not provide iTunes on Linux (which I needed to do work from, and I did not want to reinstall XP), which left me with absolutely no way to sync/update my phone without purchasing a new computer (which I finally broke down and did).
Now that I have a new computer, I am trying to pull the remnants of my music library off of my iPhone, but iTunes says that I cannot copy the files to the computer, and wants me to erase the phones contents to be able to manually manage the phones music library. Is there anyway to tell itunes that I want my library to be managed from my new computer, and that I do not want to kill everything on the phone?
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Ok I found out how to transfer the purchased content on my own, didn't notice the transfer purchased songs when right clicking on the device.
I still have the open question on if Linux will ever be supported, as that would really enhance my user experience, as I do not think that your choice in cell phone should hinder which OS you can use or vice versa.

  • How can I keep from having to "re-activate" my add-on's in Firefox each time I restart my computer. This is a pain in the A**

Every time I restart my computer, Firefox makes me "re-activeate" or "re-enable" my add-on's . This is a major pain, and is at the point where I am about to dump FF and move to Chrome. How can I stop the insanity.

If this is happening to all your add-ons:
Firefox stores the information about whether you've seen the prompt about add-on compatibility in a pref:
    [email protected]
What may be going on is that something is preventing Firefox from saving that preference and so it keeps triggering the prompt. Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click the Show Folder button next to "Profile Directory". Look for a file called prefs.js -- right click on it and select properties. Make sure it's not read-only or locked in any way.
There are other suggestions in the [[Preferences are not saved]] article if that doesn't help.

  • A syncing pain!

OK, so we all know that it currently takes FOREVER to sync iphone with itunes right now. What's really a major pain is when you're half way through that sync you get a call and it messes sync up!
    is there away around this?
    thanks

I hope people can help me out and let me know why its sych a pain syncing with Apple, its not clear at all and there are way too many options
We can answer specific tech questions but we can't train people on how to use iTunes. Are you near an Apple store? If so, they offer classes on how to use their products. There are also online resources...

  • Pain Point of SMEs and solution offered by SAP B1

    Hi.. Experts
I would like to recognize the major pain points of SME sector and how SAP Business One is there to solve them. I would be highly grateful to you guys if you can help me out in this matter as I have to write some white paper on this topic.
    Thanks and Regards
    Raviti Mishra

    Raviti Mishra,
    Excellent question !!
You would need to understand that every company is different in its own ways but in general this is my take on this.
SME's lack visibility on their TRUE financial position.  Excel, home grown software or other basic accounting system do not provide a 360 deg.
Visibility to Inventory (stock) levels is insufficient. This results in the business carrying excess stock of items and sometimes keeping slow moving items for too long or sometime not enough stock when there is demand.  There in-efficiencies can be prevented by using a ERP solution like Business One.
Forcasting of future demand is generally done in Excel and might not be accurate and the qualifications lie in the hands of one or more pruchasing managers who then tend to become important and challenging.  It is always better to have systems that can used by anyone who plays the role of Purchasing and this would be possible by the using the demand forcastng and inventory planning functions in Business One. (MRP module)
There are 100's that I could share but these are some important ones.
    Best wishes

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
    THE FULL STORY
I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Power-Line Adapters - High Cost, Blocks at Least One Wall Outlet and Does Not Solve the Wireless Need
I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Windows 7 no longer boots

For those that might be able to help, here is my dilemma...
    I have a late 2006 Mac Pro 2,1 8-core 3.0ghz with 7gb ram, ATI Radeon HD 5870 1gb vram running 10.6.8.
The problem I am having is this. I originally had a 250gb hd that came with my Mac Pro. I installed a second 1tb hd in the second slot for more storage. Then I added a second 1tb hd for a dedicated WinXP installation. Then I added a third 1tb hd for a dedicated Win7 64bit installation. At this point, everything was working just fine and I could boot between OS X and WinXP/7. When I booted into Windows, a screen came up and let me select which Win OS I wanted to boot into, again, all working perfectly.
So after about 6 months I start running out of room on my original 250gb hd with Mac OS X and decide that Win7 64bit has been running so well that I should get rid of WinXP and swap out the 250gb hd for the 1tb hd for my main OS X hd. I erase WinXP, reformat the 1tb hd for Mac OS X and copy the 250gb hd to the 1tb hd. Then I switch the hd's out and put the 1tb in the #1 slot that originally had the 250gb hd in and put the 250gb hd in the #3 slot. Then I erased the 250gb hd.
After cleaning out a bunch of font duplications in Fontbook and getting rid of some unwanted startup items, my Mac Pro was running as wonderfully as ever. A few days after the changes, I decided to boot back into Win7 64bit. I held down the option key at startup as usual and selected windows. A few seconds later I get a black screen with an error message saying disk is not bootable.
I began to wonder since Bootcamp installation of Windows 7 is not officially supported on this early Mac Pro model that by deleting the WinXP installation, that I somehow disabled the Win7 64bit system. So I reinstalled WinXP on the 250gb hd in the #3 slot but now I can only boot into WinXP, still no Win7 64bit.
If I go to System Preferences>Startup Disk, I can see and select Windows 7 as a startup disk, but it still reverts to WinXP during boot up.
I am hoping to find out some simple but overlooked solution to this issue without having to reinstall Win7 64bit, since this machine isnt supported, it was a major pain to use the ATI 5870 and get Win7 64bit installed.
I have documented everything that I have done to the computer between last known working system and the current issues.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Mark

I could not even get to that window, I was able to select repair or complete install but when I chose repair, a message came up saying I couldnt repair that version of windows. It is the same disk I used for installation and it is in perfect condition.
Original HD configuration that was working was:
    Slot 1 - original apple 250gb hd with System OS X 10.6.8
Slot 2 - 1tb hd formatted for OSX for storage
Slot 3 - 1tb hd with System Windows XP SP3
    Slot 4 - 1tb hd with System Windows 7 64bit
HD configuration when that I changed:
Slot 1 - original apple 250gb disk was copied over to Slot 3
Slot 2 - unchanged 1tb hd formatted for OS X storage
Slot 3 - erased hd, reformatted and copied files over from hd in slot 1 using Disk Utility
Slot 4 - unchanged, Windows 7 64bit Ultimate installed now not booting
I have tried swapping the Windows 7 hd to each hd slot and rebooting (a Mac Pro gets really heavy after doing that 3 times!). Using startup manager, the windows boot option is unavailable. I can still boot into OS X in each placement without issues. I can go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and can see the Windows 7 option and select it. However even if I restart the computer from Startup Disk with Windows 7 selected, it will go to a black screen and say enter CD.
In case this helps, I had to purchase an original Windows 7 64bit ultimate and then create a new bootable system disk to install on this computer. I tried system repair from both disks and it did not work.
Im beginning to think that reinstallation is unavoidable, but still hoping that I can find a solution first. The actual installation isnt the major issue, it shouldnt take more than an hour to reinstall and update the video drivers. Its the installation of the programs and having to redo all of the settings on the 4 major programs that I am using that will literally take days. Oh man, somebody must know the answer!!
Thanks again for the response, I truly appreciate the help

  • Log and capture problems for HDV using FCP 5.0.1

I cant seem to get a picture in my log and capture browser when using HDV. The screen says my camera is connected, I see timecode correctly rolling in sync with my cameras timecode, I can use the controls, but no picture on the screen?
When I hit capture now, the capture screen pops up and gives a message "waiting for data from device".
we shot at 720p at 25fps, there is no capture preset for this in my version of FCP. Could this be the problem? Please help!!

    Thanks for responding.
It's a mac osx 10.4.11 and a 2 ghz intel core duo. I'm using easy set up in final cut pro, but there is no option for hd fire wire basic (which apple support told me to look for). The only hd options are 1080i50, i60 and 720 p30. The other hd options are for the apple intermediate codec. When I use the easy set up for hd 1080i60, then go to log and capture, it doesn't give me the preview window to set in's out, batch capture etc. It only lets me capture straight from the camera and I have to manually stop it and start it which is a major pain. Plus the clips need to be rendered once I put them in a timeline. I've shot and edited on mini dv with final cut for nearly 7 years, but now that i've tried to upgrade and shoot hd mini dv, all of these problems have arrived in capturing. I'm starting to think my version of final cut pro (5.0.1) just doesn't work with hd, unless it's very time consuming. Any ideas?

  • Question on optimum choice of index - whether to use CTXCAT or CONTEXT

    Hi ,
I have a situation in which there are short texts that are to be searched for diacritical characters and for that I implemented CTXCAT type of index. The solution works fine except for left side wild card search - in that case I have suggested the developers to use the query template feature. -this is the background information for the question I have and following example demonstrates it:
    CREATE TABLE TEST_USER
      FIRST_NAME  VARCHAR2(64 CHAR)                 NOT NULL,
      LAST_NAME   VARCHAR2(64 CHAR)                 NOT NULL
    CREATE INDEX TEST_USER_IDX3 ON TEST_USER
    (FIRST_NAME)
    INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CTXCAT
    PARAMETERS('LEXER cust_lexer');
    CREATE INDEX TEST_USER_IDX4 ON TEST_USER
    (LAST_NAME)
    INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CTXCAT
    PARAMETERS('LEXER cust_lexer');
Don't worry about the cust_lexer, it is for diacritical search and it is not relevant to this question so I am not copying the code for the preference I created etc.
Now I have a row of data in the table with first_name column as Supervisor. If I run the below sql, it gives output:
    SELECT *
      FROM test_user
    WHERE catsearch (first_name, 'Supervisor', NULL) > 0;
    FIRST_NAME                     LAST_NAME
    Supervisor                     upervisor
--even the below sql with wild card (*) at the end works fine...
    SQL> SELECT *
      2    FROM test_user
      3   WHERE catsearch (first_name, 'Super*', NULL) > 0;
    FIRST_NAME                     LAST_NAME
    Supervisor                     upervisor
However the below sql queries doesn't give any output, though they should return the same row as above!
    SQL> SELECT *
      2    FROM test_user
      3   WHERE catsearch (first_name, '*visor', NULL) > 0;
    no rows selected
    SQL> SELECT *
      2    FROM test_user
      3   WHERE catsearch (first_name, '*vis*', NULL) > 0;
    no rows selected
--Using query template as below solves the issue:
    select * from test_user
    where catsearch(first_name,
    '<query>
      <textquery grammar="context">
         %viso%
      </textquery>
    </query>','')>0
    FIRST_NAME                     LAST_NAME
    Supervisor                     upervisor
Note that I verified the query execution plan and it uses the index and there is no Full Table Scan:
    | Id  | Operation                   | Name           | Rows  | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)| Time     |
    |   0 | SELECT STATEMENT            |                |       |       |     9 (100)|          |
    |   1 |  TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID| TEST_USER      |   376 |    99K|     9   (0)| 00:00:01 |
    |*  2 |   DOMAIN INDEX              | TEST_USER_IDX3 |       |       |            |          |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Up to the above , all details were by way of the back ground...now the question is - it is this the right choice? I am using context grammer using query template. There is another thread on this forum where an expert (Barbara) said that
". It should be better to use a context index than a ctxcat index with a query template that uses context grammar. " -this was said on this question link: Re: Wildcard Search
So I am getting this doubt. However I have good data here that shows that the query doesn't do full table scan - still is it a bad choice? Note that there are several issues with CONTENT type of indexes( as per my limited understanding) - because they are not transactional in nature and so we have to take extra steps/measures to have the indexes updated which seems like a major pain area to me.
My doubt is , did I do the right thing by using query template or should I use the CONTEXT type of index instead of CTXCAT type of index?
    Thanks,
    Nirav

I would just like to add a few comments.
Alhough it is documented that the ctxcxat index and catsearch do not support a wildcard in front of the term, a workaround is to use two asterisks on the left side of the term, as demonstrated below. I provide this only for clarification and interesting trivia. I would still use a context index for various reasons.
