A myriad of issues.

_*Below is a list of a myriad of issues I have with iTunes 8 and have had with iTunes 7.*_
Whilst installing iTunes 8 it felt the need to kill explorer.exe, rendering my desktop unusable for ten minutes whilst it installed. Before it killed explorer it killed Windows Live Messenger for no apparent reason.
iTunes sometimes locks up completely when it is doing anything 'time consuming' (such as Genius scanning the library, downloading album artwork or searching for gapless albums). It also locks the entire computer rendering it unusable for sustained periods of time.
Resizing iTunes is a ghastly process, with the application rendering at 2-3 FPS.
iTunes uses a massive amount of CPU time for mundane tasks, consistently using over 50% whilst resizing (bearing in mind this is on a dual-core system, thus iTunes is using an entire core).
iTunes Toolbar on Windows Vista x64 is completely broken. None of the toolbar UI works and seems to be independent of iTunes itself.
Scrolling works 10% of the time using a mouse wheel. When it does work it goes nuts and scrolls all the way up, or all the way down.
Updating, restoring and synchronising an iPod Touch takes at least an hour and a half, with only 10gb of data to transfer.
Application updates do not install properly from iTunes and yet still log themselves as installed. After supposedly downloading and installing six updates, with iTunes saying no more updates, whilst connected and fully synchronised, my iPod Touch complained of all six updates needing to be downloaded.
iTunes UI regularly 'cuts to black' with a minimize/restore and a subsequent resize being the only thing that will get the UI to redraw.
A considerable amount of my album artwork has disappeared after upgrading to iTunes 8. I used to have at least 200/353 albums sorted, and now I have 72/353. How on Earth did iTunes manage to lose all of that artwork? I spent considerable time and effort sorting through all my artwork; it is indescribably frustrating to have to sort through it again.
My iPod Touch is regularly corrupted after synchronising with iTunes. That combined with the previously explained hour-and-a-half restore time makes for a very angry user.
The iTunes pause button frustratingly changes to a stop button if I do not have iTunes focused and I am looking at the original playlist.
Shutting down my computer without explicitly closing iTunes first consistently corrupts my library. I have to be super sure that iTunes isn’t running before I hit a ‘restart’ or a ‘shutdown’.
Exporting my iTunes library exports around 80% of my music. The last 20% seems to be left out at random (confirmed by several corruptions, followed by importing the music again. Different songs were missing every time). I would add them back manually but I have a very large amount of rated music.
Whilst updating my iPod Touch, iTunes forces a progress bar on top of itself. This renders iTunes unusable for half an hour whilst restoring and another half an hour whilst updating. With music playing loud this is very, very annoying. I daren’t force iTunes to close for fear that it might explode and take my library with it, as is usually the case. I end up just unplugging the sound for an hour.
Genius claims that you can continue working whilst it cycles through your library. This is only a half-truth. You can use iTunes if you are willing to wait around ten seconds for every click to register, then another second for iTunes to redraw.
*This is not a rant. This is a constructive list of problems FAO the iTunes Development Team. Many of these issues have been around since the release of iTunes 7.*
*These issues shouldn’t have made it to yet another release. In particular, a BSOD should definitely not have made it to release. I don’t mind paying a large amount for a sleek product (like an iPod Touch, for example), but I am absolutely dumbfounded when the product is consistently rendered useless (a lack of x64 support for a while, BSOD’s, constant corruption).*
*No amount of witticisms from Apple-thumpers are going to make me trade in my PC for a Mac. Don’t go there. Every other aspect of Windows Vista x64 works perfectly. There are far too many issues for this to be solely Windows Vista’s fault.*

  • Myriad Quicktime Issues - QT 7.5 and Mac OS 10.3.9 - RTSP, VLC, etc...

Alright, first I should describe the set-up. I have a Clamshell G3 300 running 10.3.9 on 320MB ram, accessing the INet via Airport. Overall, it runs surprisingly well. However, I've had a devil of a time getting video to load or display on QT 7.5. As I'm sure you are all well aware, an old G3 with a 4mb VRAM card simply isn't going to be competent with Flash. However (and I've used this trick on P3 Windows machines), m.youtube.com uses 240p and 360p 3gp files, which the ibook can handle without problem... when it actually gets them via RTSP. That has been very rare. I've gotten the below difficulties at home (WEP) and at school (unsecured).
The main problem I am having is: when I load a video (and I've tried many dozens of them in both normal and high-definition format) from m.youtube.com and my browser (I've tried this with Opera 10.10, Opera 9.64, Camino 1.6.11 and G3 Optimized Camino 1.6.11, Safari 1.3.2, and Firefox 2.0.20) attempts to open the stream, I get one of several errors. No one error seems to happen any more often than the others, and once in a blue moon, I do actually get the video (or the audio from the video), but that can't be more than 1 in 20, and is usually ONLY the first video loaded in a session. Sometimes, however, the first video does not even load after a reboot.
    1. Quicktime says "configuring..." and then says "Bad Request"
    2. Quicktime says "connecting..." and then says "Disconnected"
    3. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then nothing happens.
    4. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then it begins buffering and nothing happens.
    5. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then begins buffering and then an approproate timebar starts indicating playback but with no video or sound.
    6. Same as #5, except only sound plays.
    7. Reloading a video will often times result in the time clicking away with no sound or video.
    8. Quicktime says "Buffering (countdown in s)" and then begins playing only audio.
    9. Quicktime says "Buffering (countdown in s" and then plays blank media, like in #5-7.
I'm totally perplexed by this behavior. I tried 7.4.1 before this, and 6.5.2 before that, and had some problems, though I didn't stick with either long enough to really test out their relative merits, because I'd prefer to have the most updated and stable version my OS can handle. I even deleted every conceivable QT related file and reinstalled once without any change in the situation.
I'm also having a (potentially) unrelated problem. When I try to play files with VLC 0.8.6(any of the iterations, up through , have been tried), I run into an error message: QT does not support any appropriate chroma. While this issue does not pop up in VLC 0.8.4 (which supports fewer formats), part of me suspects some problem with my QT installation is to blame for this problem. And, yes, I've noticed that my particular error message with VLC is NOT unheard of, but most there blame problematic QT installs or something with QT. Given my extreme rtsp problems, I'm inclined to agree.
Any help would be much appreciated, and sorry for the length - just wanted to be detailed. QTKirk, come and save me!

Thanks for that. That site must have changed how they code and deliver video over the last year, because I was able to stream it on old comps before using VLC and/or QT. However, I installed RealPlayer 10 yesterday (despite the awful memories of RP that most computer users rightfully have) and the site now works flawlessly with pretty decent quality and playback. So, all is well again. And, using an old version of mplayer (the port no longer being developed, from 2004 or 2005) instead of VLC, I'm now able to play 640p horizontal xvids smoothly!
To your last point, I definitely disagree. I have had brand new laptops over the last 5 years, and I'm disavowing them. I'm very utilitarian, and I feel it is wasteful to purchase new laptops when most of the development is in artificially wringing out 20-40% profit margins by dint of planned obsolescence (like Tiger "requiring" firewire for installation, or Snow Leopard making G5s obsolete only 2 years after they were being sold new). I feel like I'm wasting the labor and human cost involved in researching, designing, manufacturing, and promoting top-of-the-line computers. Considering what most users need, computers today are grossly overpowered, and it would have been far more environmentally and socially responsible to develop simpler and more efficient applications for slower hardware than to push consumers into a frenzy that in no way benefits them. Using a G3 optimized port of Camino (and Opera for other tasks), Appleworks 6.2.9, etc..., this 6/7th generation processor is easily capable of handling what 80-90% of users would ever need. The only things that injure it's usefulness are arbitrary and artificial - like docX format and the huge amount of AJAX clutter slowing web access for all parties. Their benefit is anywhere from negligble to non-existent, but their cost is high to consumers.
Put another way: I'm recycling in a very responsible way by keeping this computer alive, and I don't feel like I'm making any real sacrifice by doing so. Win-win!

  • Myriad of issues since trying to install Tiger with a defective disc.

Some time ago I tried to install Tiger and got the messge the disc was damaged. I went back to Apple and they tried to install their copy and in the process my iPhoto got all fouled up. They recovered the library (somewhat) and we decided not to install Tiger until I backed up my machine. Some time later I brought my external drive in and we backed up the user and then tried to rebuild the iPhoto library. By the time I had to leave, my iPhoto was still showing white thumbnails on 30% of my library. I tried to rebuild it yesterday and like the previous time, iPhoto quite unexpectedly. See my posted question at iPhoto4 - Tried rebuilding iPhoto library twice, both time iPhoto "unexpectedly quit"
Just got back from the Apple store and their solution to the iPhoto issue agreed with Brie Fly's post of:
Move the two recent rebuild attempts from Pictures to the trash. Temporarily move your original iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Start iPhoto and choose "Create New..." from the dialog. Quit iPhoto.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the desktop, and drop it inside the newly created iPhoto Library folder in Pictures (put it inside; don't replace).
Now start iPhoto again while holding the shift+option keys to try another rebuild.
The Genius folks at the Apple store suggested that I also Archive and Install to see if I have a corrupt user file. I decided to back up my user first and this is where I got....
Dragged user to desktop icon of external drive, while it was "preparing to copy" it stopped with the message:
"One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" I'd expect one of the choices to be "Yes" but curiously the two choices were "Stop" and "Replace". (symantics!) I chose "Replace" and almost immediately I got the message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "Installer" is locked." I then click the only button offered, "Ok was the only choice to click upon doing so the operation is ceased.
I didn't know the Installer could be locked, how it became that way nor how to unlock it!

Wow, has this stumped the experts?

  • Myriad of issues (hibernation, microphone, power management, alsa)

    Hello!
I've had arch up and running beautifully on my Thinkpad T61 for around six months; everything up until this point worked well - audio, video, networking, internal microphone, etc. I'm currently running SLIM + XFCE4 + Compiz WM.  Very happy indeed!
On October 3rd I upgraded a number of packages; like a good archer I read over the list to make sure none were unneeded/would break anything.  After the update I shut down.  On October 4th, I ran an update again (I can't remember why) and updated some more packages; that finished.  I then closed my laptop lid to suspend it; that's when all hell broke loose.
At first I noticed that it wasn't suspending; I can tell by the lights on its lid.  I opened it up and saw that it was exactly where I left it.  I tried to suspend through the XFCE logout menu and noticed it was missing hibernate and suspend.  I thought; that's weird, let's reboot!
Upon reboot, an extremely loud "BEEP" began nonstop - I quickly switched TTYs, went into alsamixer, and tried muting everything. Eventually I found that if I completely lowered the volume on my microphone the beeping stopped.  That was weird. I rebooted; but the alsa settings were lost (though they were kept for everything else) on the microphone and the beeping returned.  I tried saving the alsa state (alsactl store) and saw that it was saving any changes I made to any channels other than the microphone. Annoying. So I just disabled the internal microphone in the BIOS, for now.
Back to my suspend issue: I knew that I had upgraded pm-utils; so I suspend from CLI to see if it would work. It did.  I then thought, it must be an ACPI issue - low and behold, checking the acpi log in real-time showed that the laptop lid wasn't being noticed, nor were my hotkeys.  I checked my handler.sh file, and yup - it had reverted to a non-T61 state. Very rude indeed. I then replaced it with the T61 handler.sh from the wiki, and suspend/hibernate worked again, hotkeys, lid closure, etc.   However, when resuming from suspend, he loud beeping returns - even though I've disabled microphone in the BIOS.
However, my hibernate/suspend options were still missing from my XFCE log out menu - I did some research on this; I made sure that I was a member of the power users group. I also tried logging in to XFCE as root - same issue.  I also noticed that my battery percentage/charging indicator has disappearance from the XFCE notification window; when I set the Power Management properties to "show when battery is detected" it remains hidden; if I set it to "always show" it just shows a power plug.
So I basically have three outstanding issues: My microphone is making a crazy beeping sound & alsa refuses to permanently mute it; suspend & hibernate are missing from XFCE menu (and the Power Management window has no affect - if I push the power button, it shuts down via acpid rather than prompting me as it should), and the battery indicator is missing.

    Here is my messages.log
    Here is my rc.conf
Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks!

I've had similar issues as well with the recent updates. Two things have helped but not completely eliminated all my issues. It should be noted that I'm on a T410 so this may or may not work for you. My kids X61 has had no issue whatsoever.
    1) Removed hwclock from DAMONS in rc.conf - this fixed a gnome 3.2 issue.
    2) Turned off wireless (hardware switch) before suspend - suspend now works - I don't really feel this is a fix but more on the lines of a workaround until a real solution is found.
You may also want to look at some of the recent suspend threads people are finding different things on different models for the suspend issues at least.

  • Startup Issues, Kernal Panics, and much much more

I'm having a myriad of issues with my G4. They started a month or 2 ago with a bunch of kernal panic restart-screen fun, at different times. Upon restart, the Question Mark folder comes on screen. Most of the time, it finds my backup system on my external drive. Occasionally it doesn't, and just sits there (so I restart).
When it does find the backup system, everything starts up fine, except my internal drive is nowhere to be found- not the desktop, in disk utility or techtool.
And sometimes, everything goes back to normal. disk utility doesnt find anything wrong, but techtool is very prone to crashing/freezing.
A few weeks ago, I backed up evreything and reformatted my internal HD (which is only a few months old). The problem seemed to stop for a while, but now its back in the past few days.
I've zapped PRAM/NVRAM, reset the PMU... And occasionally, when my intHD decides to show itself and I run disk utility on it, it freezes while "Gathering Disk Information."
It sounds like a disk problem to me, but I just reformatted the disk... could it be back so soon? Could something else be to blame?
Sorry for being long winded, but this is driving me nuts.

    Hi
If it were me I'd suspect a hard disk problem as well. They can and do fail, and whilst I guess it can happen at any time, they do seem to fail either very early on (in the first few months) or very late on (after several years). When the problem occurs, if the drive doesn't show up in the disk utility, it would seem to be something fairly fundamental that a reformat probably wouldn't solve anyway. I guess you could just check the power and ribbon cables are seated securely, but failing that, trying another hard disk would be one option. That would prove whether the problem lies with the drive or the computer. Most external drives are just normal internal ATA drives mounted in an external FireWire or USB enclosure. It may be possible to remove your external drive from the enclosure and install it internally just to see whether that fixes the problem.

  • How do I merge two seperate HD's into one.  I upgraded my MBP to an SSD and installed a hybrid in the optical bay.

I intially planned to use my cloned system on the SSD and the Hybrid to be used as backup, media, whatever else.  But I only had access to certain program on another MBP and so I cloned it to a partition on the Hybrid.  So basically I have two seperate computers each isolated from one another.  I have two startup disks, 2 seperate everything.  And I have to be careful when syncing my dropbox and a myriad of issues when swithing from one to the other.  So does anyone have any questions about this or any suggestions as to how I can merge the 2 so that I can run the initial configuration I desired.  Oh and the performance between the Momentus XT hybrid and the Intel-520 ssd are getting closer and closer as time goes by that I almost don't notice a difference, grnted my MBP is only backward compatible to 3gbs so I don't get the performance of the 6gbps capabilities of the intel.  But GD its awesome.
I really would appreciate any suggestions.  the machine is 15" MBP mid 2010 with 10.8.2.

I don't know that copying them from an external would be any different than doing it internally because they are physically seperated.  I have tried many different configurations.  It won't let me erase or format the SSD so that I can clone the Hybrid to it. Which is what I prefer to do but I haven't boot from the recovery or an external and tried doing it that way.  But even then I have to boot from each seperately, what is holding me up is I've lost both product keys to office and adobe ms 6 due to the fact of not only having them so long and always upgrade using dmg's as well as upgrading os's so often.  So those programs are only available on one computer. Which happens to be on a seperate internal disk.  A slick unix script would be nice.  I am just really tired of trial and error and would like to get back to using my stuff.

  • How do I lock Audio clip at playhead in iMovie

    Hi,
I have been using iMovie HD for years.  Great program.  Finally had to move on to iMovie 10.  What a total disaster that is.  I have a myriad of issues with it, as does everyone else, but right now I am trying to figure out how to lock an audio clip at the playhead, as one essentially needs to be able to do for even pretty simple home movie edits.  Am I being stupid or has this functionality been entirely removed by some genius Apple programmer?  Why do I get the feeling that what used to be a brilliant and intuitive piece of software has been  completely eviscerated to the point of uselessness?
    Any ideas?  Thanks
    Richard

No, it's not been removed. You just need to drag your audio clip to the right place.
In your case, you want to drag it directly to the timeline and not to the background music well below the timeline.

  • I can't get my iphone 5s to transfer pictures to my computer, windows xp, i keep getting a no pictures found result on everything I have tried.  Windows Live Photo Gallery, Scanner and Camera Wizard, and just by opening up my Computer. Advice anyone?

I can't open up anything for my iPhone 5s but my wife's regular iPhone 5 works fine.  Nothing shows up when I open up My Computer and double click the Apple iPhone icon.  My iPhone keeps asking if I trust this computer.  I keep clicking trust.  I have no updates pending on my iPhone.  I have tried the Scanner and Camera Wizard and also Windows Live Photo Gallery.  Can anyone help me with this issue?  Is this happening to anyone else?  Thanks in advance.

Do you have the latest version of iTunes on the computer? v11.1.4. If you are having issues with Camera and Scanner wizard, it is possible the USB driver for the phone is not fully loaded. You might try resetting the phone and then trying again with the photos.
Also, Microsoft has announced that on April 8, 2014 it will cease all support for XP, I would seriously be looking for a new device soon. This lack of support will cause a myriad of issues in the near future with newer products.
If the reset does not work, you can look at removing and resinstalling iTunes and then plugging the phone back in. This should download the latest drivers. See this support document and follow the instructions exactly for removing and reinstalling iTunes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

  • Need some help with a file server!

    Hi,
I'm wanting to get a mac mini or the mac mini server (whichever is needed) and connect all of my random external drives i have lying about to it. Basically, i'm wanting to set up a mini file server that i can access from anywhere in the world. I have enough space with the external drives to store my music library, other general storage and maintain a backup of my OS drive and portable external that i carry around with me, but i don't know how i'd set it up so that i could access my hard drives and use them normally from anywhere.
Also, with Mail Server, i'd like it if i could store all of my emails on the server computer and be able to access them on my Macbook. I don't know what i need though. For my needs, do i even need the server program or can i just use Lion (or even Snow Leopard if i choose) by itself? And if i did need the server, would i need it on just the server computer or both the server and my Macbook?
Sorry if i haven't explained this very well, if you didn't fully understand just ask me and i'll try to rephrase it.
    Thanks in advance
    mr meister

Be careful what you wish for.
Either Mac OS X, or Mac OS X Server can act as a simple file server for your LAN.
Granting access to external/remote users is largely a facet of setting access controls in your router to allow external clients to access your machine, but you have to consider the security implications of doing so - how do you make sure that you, and only you, access your data and not your local script kiddie down the street - or evem some hacker in China?
HOWEVER, as simple as that may be, performance is going to be your issue.
Local disks in your machine are typically connected on a bus that runs as several gigabits per second.
Even the server on your LAN is connected to your client over, typically, a gigabit connection.
However, your internet connection is likely to be measured in megabits per second... or two orders of magnitude lower than a local connection. You're really not going to want to use this for normal usage - e.g. accessing files - it's probably only practical for copying files to/from your machine.
As for mail, there are a myriad of issues in running your own mail server, especially if you don't have your own domain and static IP addresses. I'd seriously defer that question until you're more settled in your server plans.

  • Iphone 5 service worse than a 4 or even razor....???

I have an iphone 5 and when i go to our cottage in gaylord mi mine is the only one that doesnt work all of us have verizon and the other 2 are iphone 4's and ones actually a razor... they can surf web make calls and text but me with the newest phone a iphone 5 cannot... why is this? ive restarted closed apps exc and still not working when up there... what could this be?

My iPhone 5s has perhaps the best data reception of any phone I've owned. Are you running the latest version of iOS? You can try restarting your iPhone as that clears up a myriad of issues. If that doesn't work it might be time to backup/restore your iPhone.

  • TS2755 My iMessage won't activate.

I have great cellular data, but my iPhone has been saying "waiting for activation..." for about three weeks under my iMessage on and off switch.
I have an iPhone 4. I've tried restarting my phone and I just updated it to the 5.1.1 software, but nothing helped.
Please respond if you know of anything that could help!

Sounds like you have multiple Apple IDs, which causes a myriad of issues.  Go here to straighten it out.  Be forewarned that it's a pain.

  • My ipod touch can´t play some music any more

my ipod touch can´t play some music any more. iTunes don´t transfer it to my ipod touch but the capacity is taken. Can someone help me please?

My problem is a bit different, but I suspect not really unrelated. With very few exceptions, my entire music library on my iPod Touch is mixed up since updating to iOS 5. Albums display with incorrect album artwork, and contents of the albums is a jumbled mix of unrelated songs (could be any song from my library). And they won't play. The library is fine on my computer.
I removed all of the music from the iPod, then re-synched it with no improvement.
I also removed all apps other than those that come with the iOS, thinking it may be an incompatibility. Also no improvement.
My next attempt was going to be restoring to original settings, but it sounds like folks have tried that with no luck.
I hope Apple is reading these posts and looks into what sounds like a myriad of issues with the new iOS!

  • Aperture 3 causing iMovie 8 to crash, can't complete a scan for movies

    Anyone else having this issue?
My A3 library works well in other instances
    - works in Media Browser for other programs like Pages and iWeb
    - successfully integrated two different iPhoto Libraries
So I'm past the basic myriad installation issues, but now cannot use iMovie. And I can't find any way to prevent iMovie from doing an Aperture library scan! So A3 is depriving me from using iMovie 8.0.5.
Big problem! Anyone finding a workaround or a solution?

I have the same problem since the day I used Aperture 3. When I open iMovie 09, it scans for new vids and quit unexpectedly. I gone through the crash log and I believe that this might be a result of "lack of memory" or "too many vids". However, I don't really understand why. I have a MBP with 3.06GHz and 8GB of RAM. Anyway, I found out two stupid methods to get around it. FIrst, you can turn of preview in Aperture's preferences before you open iMovie. This would prevent iMovie from scanning/updating the Aperture library. However, the download side is that you can no longer access Aperture photos from anywhere else, like iTunes,iWeb, iWork etc. So, I recommend you to turn if off when you use iMovie only. The second method is to create a new empty Aperture library and switch to that library every time you use iMovie. Then, switch it back to the normal one after using iMovie......
However, these two methods seems to be a bit silly and are not directly addressing the problem. So, I hope someone can help me.

  • PDF allow from new Version Still Broken

Enterprise health care web application.. we display pdf's with reports.. we claim our app supports firefox.
Well since the update to 33.x Firefox no longer opens PDF's, PERIOD!
I went through your recommendations from this question,, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/978520 and they are all to no avail.
Windows RDLC Report viewer renders the PDF we use "iTextSharp" like everybody else, and spew out bytes from the reportviewer control to generate a PDF.
It's been working fine for like ever.. but since this update we may now need to inform our customers that we no longer support Firefox because they have gone stupid...
    Seriously what the heck ?!?!?
I'm going to go check Chrome now.. then debug this kraziness...

You Can't be serious ......suggesting some workaround to bypass the broken functionality. !!!
You are implying that I direct our ----thousands----- of customers that when they are using Firefox, that they additionally must acquire an appropriate PDF viewer to view the reports that our software produces for them.
    '''UNACCEPTABLE'''
With all the myriad of issues we as Microsoft developers have with IE and the apparent pervasiveness of this (firefox) PDF display issue , I would think you'd have a fix ASAP .. This looks bad for firefox.... perhaps we will have to replace the recommendation as secondary browser to chrome now .. For the record the PDF displays fine still in IE.
