A nice feature for pacman

I dont think im the only one that does a weekly "pacman -Syu", many do it more often i guess, but i cant allow that, so i do it once a week, now i dont have that many pkgs as i've been really busy and just reinstalled Arch a week or so ago, but i do had this thought before i reinstalled:
When i had my prior system, i had lots of packages, and sometimes i didnt want to update them all at the same night (yeah you guessed, dialup), so i had to "manually" see what where the ones i wanted more.
Now, here is the issue, "pacman -Syu" is a list of all the pkgs available for update with no particular order except for the abecedary, so some pkgs starting with "k" would be mixed with the KDE ones and the same for the "G" and Gnome, and all this made a lot more complicated to choose what packages to upgrade. So i was thinking, cant the output of "pacman -Syu" be categorized? as with the categories the Arch installer use?
I think an ordered list of the packages available would be a much nicer thing to see and very usufull too.

I wasnt thinking in doing partial sysupgrades, i think you didnt understood what i wanted to say (im sorry but when i read something written by me in english a couple of hours ago, i find several errors on my ways of expression, not to name grammatical and ortographical).
What i meant, was that if there is a way of ordering the "display" of the output of pacman -Syu in categories, so one can see in more detail for a pkg that might want to update if there is actually any update to do.
Instead of:

It would be something like this:

The numbers in the versions are random except on the ones i remembered current ones.
About missing key dependencies, i do pacman -Syu to see what are the pkgs updated, then choose NO at the do system upgrade question and then i do a pacman -S [app1] [app2] [app3].... and pacman deals with the dependencies, so i dont think we would have any problem with them... is this what you meant??

Nice "feature" for iTunes match in IOS6 - not!

So, under IOS6, there's no indication in iTunes of whether a track is held locally on the device or in iTunes Match. That's a pain in the *** on its own but there's more.
It's not possible to download a track from within the "Songs" view. This can only be done in the Album or Artist view. I tend to scroll through the Songs view looking for tracks to liste t or copy to my iPhone before I get on a plane or go somewhere there isn't a data connection. So when I find a song I want I hae to locate the album it belongs to and download from there, then go back to the Songs view and back and forth, back and forth...
Dumb oversight that could have been easily avoided, especially as it was something that was possible undr IOS5
I guess Apple assume everyone is always connected to high speed data everywhere, including on a plane or on the underground.

Hey thank you for your response... i did realize later that the do not disturb was turned on. i thought you had to turn it on to have it on at night. didn't know that it ment for immediate use. But i got it figured out...
As for itunes match. I did a little more research. Its actually designed that way so you can't delete any song unless... you turn off itunes match in setting then you can delete songs. Its sort of a fail safe so you dont delete songs by accident. So its not that bad. ios6 is designed to delete songs automaticly if space is needed on your phone. it will delete songs that have less play. hope that helps you guys.

Feature: packagelists for pacman

the problem:
how to save the installation-configuration ( == list of packages that are installed and need to be installed on the new machine) of an Arch-System to a file and then use it on an other machine to install exactly the same packages on the new
my workaround:
pacman -Q > packagelist
and then remove from packagelist the n and then use it as string on the new machine after base-installation
pacman -S <this string>
the elegant way may be:
what about
pacman -L list.pkgs
// -L means that a list is the argument instead of a packagename or filename
-> this line would create a list of all packages from system
then it would be possible to use this list.pkgs for different things, like:
pacman -SL list.pkgs
would --sync all packages in list.pkgs
pacman -QL list.pkgs
would --query all packages in list.pkgs
pacman -RL list.pkgs
would --remove all packages in list.pkgs
and it would be easier to group packages in "graphics.pkgs" ... and then installing them additionally easily and also removing them easily (as groups, like the kde* discussion)
what do you think about such a feature for pacman?

I also like this idea. It makes building duplicate machines easy, less error prone and less time consuming.
Also like dp mentioned it is one way to resolve the software group issue. There could be several different packages for groups like "full-Gnome.pkgs", "standard-Gnome.pkgs" and "minimal-Gnome.pkgs".

DLNA would be a nice feuture for Bulletin Board

A nice feature for the bulletin board would be sharing on a dlna renderer.
windows 7 can send multimedia out of the exporer ("Play to") to a dlna renderer (e.g. TV set).
The bulletin board is missing this option.
I would imagine anything like the dlna sharing on a Tablet S.

How to disable "slide to call" feature for missed calls from lock screen on ios7

I realized that when the iphone (running iOS7) is locked, the“Slide to Call” allows anyone to make an outgoing call to the missed calls from a locked phone (with passcode).
it is nice feature for people who don't care about locking their phone.but I believe there should be an option to disable the “slide to call” or at least require password before allowing the outgoing call to go through.
This is a serious security issue.it should be user configurable.
Hope Apple will take it seriously and release a update for the same.

This may allow malicious and unwanted calls to be made from a locked phone by anyone having access to the phone and defeats the purpose of having the phone locked by a passcode.
Don't get me wrong, it is nice feature for people who don't care about locking their phone, but I believe there should be an option to disable the “slide to call” or at least require password before allowing the outgoing call to go through.
At this point the only option that I see is to disable the phone related notifications from lock screen, which prevents all phone related notifications to be displayed on lock screen (missed or voicemail). This is not a desired solution.....
This is the first time in the history of iOSes, that a user can make outgoing calls from a locked phone with a passcode. Even the voice commands (for dialling a number) have option to be disabled on locked screen.
I was wondering if anybody else feels the same way about this? or have a solution?

Actually I was very surprised when I discovered that!
In addition to this, when you actually slide a missed call, it calls the person and when you end the call, the notification of the missed call is still present! So that person can be called again and again and again.
This is a serious issue that Apple has overlooked!

Request for a "NeverUpgrade" option for pacman.

Yesterday something very serious happened, pacman moved my grub menu.lst file to menu.lst.pacsave. If I wouldn't have spotted this, my system would have become unbootable. This can be fixed by putting it in NoUpgrade (pacman.conf) by default, but there is an underlying problem here.
Pacman will always move your modified files (excluding the ones in NoUpgrade) to .pacsave and use a default file instead. Imagine this would happen on the httpd.conf (apache), my.cnf (mysql), php.ini (php),... files on a production server! It shouldn't, the server admin should have seen that pacman moved them, or he should have put them in the NoUpgrade line. But we're all human and these things happen. And a human error like this already happened with the grub file.
I've always been concerned with the actions of pacman. As Gyroplast said on irc: "Don't f*cking touch any already exiting config files until I explicitly tell you to!".
I've also noticed that a lot of times, these 'new' files are just the same as the original (unmodified) file, or are not worth the upgrade. It only costs time moving the old file back to its original position.
Newbies, people who didn't see that pacman moved their old file (on big updates, the console can even be to small to show this), people that do a "pacman -Syu" through cron,.. will never notice that their system can become unbootable, that apache's config file has been moved, so all their client's sites will be down after a reboot or apache restart,...
This is a very serious issue!
I have a very simpel solution though. I'm sure there are some people that are used to the old way and want to keep it, so we should give people the choice. Either use the old system, or the new. Let's say there is a "NeverUpdate" = yes/no option in pacman.conf. (default: YES!)
If you say no, everything will be back to 'normal'.
If you say yes, things will be different. We will now work with a whitelist instead of a blacklist as Gyroplast proposed. So instead of the "NoUpgrade" option, we will have an "Upgrade" option. All files will be protected by default (and use the .pacnew system), only the files in "Upgrade" can be overwritten, and moved to a .pacsave version. This is all VERY easy (and fast) to implement, if I knew C I would do it myself
I think it's important that this happens as soon as possible, to prevent things like the grub fiasco to happen again.
We can go further however: when a packager creates a new package with config files, he can tell pacman what has been changed (with a new option in PKGBUILD). If I upgrade that package, pacman will tell me exactly what has been added/changed so I can upgrade my file really quickly. Much faster than doing a 'diff' or just comparing it line by line. More work for 1 packager, but less work for hundreds of users. (and that 1 packager will also benefit from this, because he will save time updating packages from other packagers, so a win-win situation 8)). I realize that this will be much more work to implement, but would be a very nice feature in some future version of pacman.
I'm sure there will be some discussion about this, new ideas, people that hate me,..
I hope the Arch developers (particulary apeiro) will join this discussion, and also explain to us why the current pacman is so radical.

FreeBSDs mergemaster really only is a frontend for sdiff, no black magic, so it'd probably be well possible to port it to arch, especially as it's only a shell script.

Yeah, and I could easily construct a dozen more, but there's no excuse for not paying attention to the output of a crucial program if you cannot risk your system going haywire. If you _can_ risk it, though, your point is moot.
The inherent problem is that you cannot fully automate the process, thus always requiring manual interaction if a new config file differs from the original file and the current file has been modified. There is no way around that. You will shredder your system if you do not pay attention when this scenario happens, with the proposed change a little less often, but still. Since problems are not totally ruled out, you still have to check just as often as before, because you cannot know in advance how basic the config file changes are. If you still have to do the same amount of work, I don't see a reason to change anything.
I do not believe in "some security". Either pacman is able to do the job of upgrading reliably and automatically, or it is my sole duty to ensure configuration integrity. All pacman has to (and already can) do in that case is telling me that my interaction is required, and where. It does that now already (if I leave the NoUpgrade misbehaviour aside).
The mergemaster tool would be a very helpful _additional_ tool that could be offered, I have nothing against that, but it's not part of pacman. As I wrote it's just a frontend to sdiff, a fancy tool that may or may not be used. One job - one tool. Pacman's job is installing packages, not solving impossible dilemmas, therefore I'd vote against this extra functionality and would rather discuss how to improve administrator notification to reduce the chance of changes going unnoticed.
A solution to this underlying core problem would be "statistics" at the end of an upgrade process, stating if and what files have been replaced with newer versions. That's legible, it's easy to implement, and it does the job. If you're running pacman unattended, you're acting irresponsible. No matter if your config is replaced or not, you risk your system's integrity, the former risks it a bit more, the latter a bit less, but it's nevertheless risked, which is per se inacceptable, thus leaving the difference in reliability being merely a moot point.
I'll rephrase that:
Yes, the system will probably break more often if the current implementation is kept, but only if the administrator does not do his job and check pacman's warnings. There are no superfluous warnings being generated by pacman that would cause an admin to disregard the output, the only (documented) case of a pacsave being generated is when default config parameters have been changed in the package, which needs interaction _every time_. You're not winning anything by the change, you just gain a "safety net" that is not sufficient for the situation you are constantly referring to; A server system that simply must work. Therefore the safety measure is useless by concept. You cannot reliably help an admin who does not care, and if an admin does not care, it's by defintion not important enough to be considered, so why should a function be implemented that would solve (some, but not all) cases that are considered as unimportant by the admin anyway?
Whoa, evil topic here, so I say "Port mergemaster, make pacman a bit more verbose, be done with it." to keep it short.

I just did pacman -Syu and once again it broke my system. This time I'm no longer able to access 3d-acceleration via dedicated nvidia board. I've already made an appropriate thread in 'Kernel/Hardware', but I also wanted to suggest this, by copy/pasting the "PPS" appendix I wrote here:

All of this tinkering is always so exhausting and annoying, it'd be really nice if Arch/pacman could somehow add an easy to use rollback mechanism for cases like this where your system becomes unusable. Some sort of automatic backup of exactly the files affected by doing the pacman -Syu thing (eg linux kernel). Just so you don't have to spend hours of random testing/asking/hoping to sort things out but can go back to where you started in one click/command. For people who want to use Linux to get things done, as opposed to those who love the actual tinkering.
I'm not sure how much longer I will have the spare time available to try and fix it myself and everything, there might come a time where I will have to either drop Arch or just never do pacman -Syu again, if I have too much to do with work and just cannot afford breaking my system with what was supposed to be "updating" anymore

In the past I have successfully used btrfs snapshots as a rollback.
Being careful with /boot it is possible to boot anyone of the snapshots independently; but to do so one also has to choose between keeping the whole /home in the snapshot or taking a copy of user config files.
I had this setup during one of the big changes to glibc or filesystem: I had the opportunity to run "pacman -Syu --force" breaking the primary system; going back to the previous snapshot worked fine and was easier than recovering from the errors.
I do not have it anymore after I managed to crash the whole filesystem (stupid typo in grub while I was configuring the swap partition for hibernation).
At the end I decided it is not worth for me. Now I just update carefully and if I have enough time to recover from an eventual failure.
On the other hand, if you are willing to use btrfs, it is not much harder that installing on an usual ext4 and it will be a fun learning experience.

Konqueror browser for Linux has an useful CPU limitation feature for websites using Flash content. Can you add such a feature in Firefox?

I have recently found that Konqueror browser for Linux can help user to limit cpu usage while visiting a website using flash technology by changing settings in the Flash section and adjusting the slider from VERY HIGH settings to HIGH and MEDIUM and so on. It actually works, and it does not have a direct impact on the general performance for flash player but it may generate some conflicts if other extensions such as add-blocker or click-to-flash are enabled also.
Maybe you can add a similar setting in Firefox in the browser option section or just as an useful addon or extension.

Sorry for being late with my reply. I've just tested that addon that you mentioned in your post ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../system-monitor/ ) , it looks like a system monitor and nothing more than that.
As for the memory tip ( about:memory ) I agree that it can be extremely useful for users that have less than 1 gb memory installed on their system. I know very little about computers but I can tell your tip for optimizing memory usage in firefox has merits.
Me, I have another problem with cpu overload in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and most of the browsers with flash support enabled. Each and every time time I visit a page that features all sort of adds and gadgets based on flash technology, and each time I try to watch a video online my cpu goes all the way up to 100% and stays there until i finally decide to close the browser.
I am running winxp and also linux on a Dell Optiplex GX260 machine with 2000 MHz cpu, 1024 Mib ram and 128 Mib video card, it is not the best computer in the world but still 2000 MHz should be enough for a limited and uneventful web experience.
It is not as much an issue with the web browser, any browser, the whole problem is caused by funny people claiming to be deeply involved with web development, and promoting flash technology for ages instead of choosing other alternatives, more user friendly. All I am saying is that flash ruined the entire web experience making people to believe that they actually need dual-core cpu and coreduo and deepfreeze cpu and so on which is only partially true.
I always get better results for cpu usage when watching online videos that use media player as default player and not flash player, and my cpu stays below 70% usage which is not much but still it is not 100% usage.
Konqueror offered me a nice surprise, and I was able to limit cpu usage once I moved that slider from Very High setttings for flash player to Medium settings. I got something between 80-90% cpu usage as a result, and I was very pleased to finally see a working solution to my problem at least for linux if not for windows.
The only other browser that I can use for windows only, which handles both flash player and cpu usage well is Kmeleon browser which is a long forgotten project but does offer nice features once you find some plugins that it needs to make it come to life again.

A suggestion for pacman

Right now if you want to use "makepkg" effectively, you have to install and setup "sudo" just to be able to get the dependencies for a build (makepkg -s).
My suggestion is for pacman to have a new parameter, like "pacman -P" for example, that would read a PKGBUILD file from the current directory and automatically parse the mentioned dependencies for installation. That way sudo wouldn't be required to easily use AUR/ABS.
I think implementing this would make some systems more secure (no need to give users pacman permission) and also makes things more simple imo.
I already use a bad self-made script for directly reading and installing PKGBUILD deps, but it would be cool to have it as native feature of pacman.
What do you think.

Any ideas on why it wont work have used gnome-terminal and xterm to test coloured output with no success.
This is the ll command alias working so I know my .bashrc is working or at least being recognised. I like the default behaviour of Pacman and wanted the colour output purely for readability.

LR beta released - new features for ACR 7

I was just reading about the LR beta for version 4: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7481161037/lightroom-4-public-beta-whats-new
Although I'm not a LR user, I was excited to see the new editing features, as they will be essentially the same as the next version of ACR that will be part of PS CS6 (all guesswork on my part of course, but as Adobe has always done this previoulsy I don't think it's much of a leap of faith to make). A few features and changes that stood out for me:
They've re-vamped the basic tools, and have a new Process Version 2012;
Localised adjustments now allow you to adjust white balance and noise reduction;
Curves tool allows you to work on individual RGB channels.
This looks set to be a major upgrade IMHO.

I've been testing new features for a while
I'm quite satisfied with a new automatic recovery procedure. Just that ... it will probably raise new posts about mismatching between camera profiles and in-camera jpegs, because when a photo has blown parts, recovery kicks in automatically. Also, in some (rare) cases I would just want to have it off ... so maybe having a whites slider with 'auto' check box or something similar would be a better solution ... Anyway, finally I can say that dealing with highlights is now even better than in Canon cameras / software, which have similar solution for at least 5 years ...
Since R and B channel, that can be blown by WB, are now also recovered, resulting hue of blown parts is now different than with PV2003/2010. If G and B are blown, resulting hue is around 200 deg (instead 180 previously), which looks more natural for parts of blown sky. If R and G are blown, resulting hue is around 40-50 (instead 60 previously), which is ok for blown areas around sun in sunset photos etc but ... in some rare cases there can be blown foliage colors and it doesn't look particularly good when blown green turns light brown ... So a slider to deal with hue in blown parts for brush tool would be fine somewhere in the future, because painting that areas with some color doesn't produce desired result ...
Getting rid of defaults from the past (brightness +50, contrast +25, blacks 5,. medium-contrast curve) is also nice, as it didn't make any sense with camera profiles
I'm also glad that clarity is now usable for me, so I don't have to apply wide radius USM in PS anymore ... The same with highlight & shadows tool, that is now implemented here ... etc ...

Drag and Drop Layout feature for regions

Wondering if there is a drag and drop layout feature for regions in 3.1.2 (or below that I might have missed) or if there are plans for it in future releases. I know that this feature is available for items in a region but interested for the many regions I have on a page. I think it would be a nice feature to have instead of having to go into a page template to get the layout I want.

No search feature for Dashboard widgets?

In Dashboard, when you click the Manage Widgets button at the bottom and then you click More Widgets in the Manage Widgets window, you are taken to Apples' official Dashboard Widgets web page at http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard.
At the bottom of the page, it says there are "3901 Dashboard Widgets" available. But oddly, there seems to be no search feature for the widgets.
There's a Widget Browser where you can drill down by category, but sometimes it's just easier to search for what you want.
There's a search field at the very top of the page in the navigation bar (just as there's one for this page, but that searches the whole Apple site, not just the widgets.
Is there a way to do a text search for Dashboard widgets?

I took a look and agree that there doesn't seem to be a way so you aren't just blind...unless we both are
The only thing I noticed is since all the widgits seem to reside in the same directory you could do a google search a la
"widget I want site:http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/"
I suppose apple thinks most people don't commonly associate widgets by there actual name so categories are easier but it seems trivial just to throw in a search function with a nice little preview of each widget.
Maybe we just didn't look deep enough.
